PSYCHOLOGY. FEAR / S : Arthur has a mild one of change. He’s adaptable but he’s very sentimental and nostalgic, he will miss “old ways” and previous places. There’s also losing his usefulness, disappointing those who depend on him (much as he will get defensive when it happens). Post-Guarma, he does develop a fear of drowning. It won’t keep him from swimming, but getting swept or held underwater may cause some panic. Post-game au, he does fear about getting sick again and actively avoids doctors.  ASPIRATION / S : Uncertain, just wants to get out of the mess he’s in and eventually just wants a calm existence somewhere. However, once he’s diagnosed with TB, his main goal is getting those who want/will listen to him out of the gang as it starts to fall down. MUN QUESTIONS. Q1 : if you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in , and what would it be about ? A1 : I actually REALLY enjoy the game’s story line, much as I feel the redemption through death is overplayed and not as deep as people make it out to be. I’d find a way to subvert that or some alternative, but idk. I like the game’s story. lol

Q2 : what would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : Western-y. IDK? The game’s soundtrack is actually really good too so.  Q3 : why did you start writing this character ? A3 : I love his development and progression as a character, and even with the trailers where he seemed no more than an angry outlaw there was a part of me that was still “hmm” about writing him. Ultimately, he’s grown to mean a lot to me and I really enjoy writing for him on this blog.  Q4 : what first attracted you to this character ? A4: As mentioned above, Arthur probably has one of the best character progressions I’ve seen in a while imo. Even in the beginning, I went in under the impression that I’d be playing as this outlaw so the violence and gruffness wasn’t too much of a surprise, much as I wasn’t too attached until later chapters in the game because of this. However, as I spent more time playing as him and reading his journal, seeing how he interacts with strangers and people he loves, he has some depth to him and some deep rooted flaws and insecurities that are played very well in the game. He’s probably one of the few character deaths I’ve cried over. lol Q5 : describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. A5 : I have to be truthful, Arthur’s an asshole. lol I didn’t like and still don’t like him from Colter into Horseshoe in behavior and personality, much as it’s lessened from my first play of the game because I know what happens to him and how he grows. However, while he’s not blind to himself and how he acts, he doesn’t think for himself really. Even if he hates debt collecting, he does it for the gang and even tells Strauss he does it for pleasure at a point (sarcastic or not, considering they are talking about Thomas, a man trying to raise money for charity while suffering poverty himself on top of having TB), he does whatever Dutch tells him, among many other things. It’s not until later in the game that the theme of grasping redemption comes into play, and he starts to act and think for himself a little more once things start to spiral. As much as I love him with all my heart, Arthur’s got some deep flaws that are hard to ignore.   Q6 : what do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : HHHhh. I’d say we suffer from similar self-esteem issues, not just in body image but morality of character (much as his are way more complicated than mine jaksfha), we also have a similar sense of humor...Yeah, idk. I’m attached to him as a character and I can relate to him in certain ways, but it’s hard to pinpoint.  Q7 : how does your muse feel about you ? A7 : Idk, he’s pixels? Though, for the sake of a fun answer, I genuinely don’t know? We can be fairly similar in mannerisms and thought process (at points), but I have no idea if we’d actually get along if by some universe rip we were able to meet.  Q8 : what characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? A8: I don’t want to get specific, I interact with a lot of interesting characters. Anybody who’s put me out of a comfort zone or forced me to look at Arthur in the different way has definitely stood out. Q9 : what gives you inspiration to write your muse ? A9 : The game itself is a good source, I enjoy putting up lets plays of it in the background sometimes if I’m struggling or just need something that isn’t music. I get more muse putting together blog playlists than playing them, but there’s that, too. Also generally plotting or talking about him can pull some to the forefront. Q10 : how long did this take you to complete ? A10 : An hour or so, I think?

&&. announcing her royal highness, ( mieke zulu, née van vuuren ), the ( 34 ) year old ( princess ) of ( south africa ). she is often confused with ( candice swanepoel ). some say that she is ( unwelcoming & haughty ), but she is actually ( steadfast & clever ).

moving on

the van vuuren family was one of the first families to move to south africa when the area was colonized. as a family of merchants, they were a bit on the wealthier side but nothing too excessive. they didn’t hold much power but had a few connections to the more influential people.

until the mid-19th century that is. 

the van vuurens bought a mine --- they had hoped to find vanadium and chrome, and perhaps even a little bit of gold. what they di not expect was a proper diamond mine. the family got rich and fast, and when the iron is hot you have to smith: they expanded as much as they just could and it took roughly a decade for them to be one of the most prominent suppliers of diamonds. 

with wealth came power. the van vuurens got better at influencing politicians and swaying to vote that it served their agenda. they had a lot to lose when the conversation about an independent south africa began. the van vuurens were more than glad to stay under the rule of the english --- hell, they’d take the dutch too.

despite their best efforts, in 1910 the monarchy was established in south africa. 

the van vuurens managed to hold onto most of their land, they paid a steep price for it in the form of bribes and donations but the dynasty stayed. 

they had never been really politicians, they just made sure that they had a dozen in their pockets because they always found something to disagree with the royals. the van vuurens knew how much power they could lose if they gave in even an inch so no matter what the ruler of the kingdom did, the van vuurens always found something to criticize. it really depended on the issue whether they were just annoying mosquitoes or actual roadblocks. 

after the 60s they toned down a bit --- the less socially acceptable straight up racism got, the less they could open their mouths. it still didn’t mean that they were nowhere close to playing fair or being kind. they had their own agenda and they would serve it until the very end, ruthlessly.

of course once they had established their place in the south african society, they also had less of a need to be very vocal. as time passed, they mainly focused on influencing taxing and exportation laws. the more money they could earn, the better, fuck the society lol.

mieke’s father and the king of south africa don’t see eye to eye. not only is mieke’s father a bit young to show such blatant disrespect towards the monarch, he has practically made it his mission to slow down any improvements the king has tried to make. partly because it helped with the family business, partly to make sure everyone knew how strong a position the van vuurens still held, and partly because of the feud the families had kept feeding since the beginning of the nation. 

okay now about mieke herself

so mieke grew up as a rich kid. she had it all from chopard necklaces ( gifted to her by the brand ofc ) to chanel tweed jackets. not to mention a “pet” leopard in a cage on their backyard. everything about the van vuurens was about showing off their wealth and mieke knew no better. her hair always had to look like she was fresh from the salon and if she forgot to put on diamond earrings, it was the end of the world.

mieke has only associated herself with specific kind of people: the rich and the beautiful. it’s not something she does intentionally but because she has always been able to pick the people around herself, she has clearly gone for the people who seem the most interesting and most like herself.

she doesn’t necessarily look at “normal” people down her nose but she somewhat ignores them unless there’s an actual conversation to be had. she remembers to thank her staff and send them their christmas bonuses but she rarely asks how their families are or if they enjoyed their holiday: if she really doesn’t care about the person, why would she waste her time? she has better things to do than to make someone she doesn’t truly know, feel noticed.

but if anything, mieke has always been obedient. she has always respected her parents and appreciated the privileged life she’s been given. she very much shamelessly repeated her father’s words when people asked her about politics and whatnot --- even if she never really know what she was saying. 

mieke was also the only child so she received a lot of attention from her father, which just made her more fond of the man. she has a handful of cousins who are all working at the family business, mieke’s branch of the family owns 42% percent of the company, her two uncles’ families the rest.

but then. enter ayo.

it was usual for the van vuurens to be invited to basically every event the royals were invited to as well so the two families interacted quite a lot even if every conversation was just both sides tensing their jaws.

according to all logic, kgosi and mieke should have been nothing different --- they were the ones who were supposed to uphold the tradition. mieke’s oldest cousin seemed to be doing a good job at it though.

kgosi and mieke did get into spats occasionally but mainly just to uphold the tradition. it was all in good humour. 

it was all in good humour until they both realized that somewhere along the way they had more or less fallen for each other. 

it was a twist hardly anyone saw coming, definitely not the king nor her father. when it was brought up, the couple somewhat assumed that both of the men would be outraged. that was not the case. because both could see exactly what they had to gain from it:

mieke’s father believed that finally the family would get someone truly special in their pocket. not just the season’s hottest politician, a crown prince. 

and the king would finally get rid of the van vuurens, the pests. if the van vuurens’ own angel was to become queen, they’d feel less inclined to shake up the monarchy’s position. if mieke became part of the family, she’d most certainly earn the royal family points from the white but rich minority.

so eventually the two got married, in 2010, and it really did improve the relationship between the families --- it didn’t remove all of the problems but now it was kgosi’s and mieke’s job to find the compromise. 

the two of them had trouble conceiving,  it took them three years until mieke got pregnant. their son, ajani yahya zulu, is now five years old, and even though they’ve been trying to have another child, no such luck. mieke has more or less given up by now.

mieke is fiercely loyal to her husband and takes his side without having to think --- unless it’s her own family causing the issue. she does her best to make sure to have her husband’s back. her talents lie in scheming to be honest. it’s something she learned from her family. there isn’t many things she considers unorthodox and doesn’t mind taking the responsibility off kgosi’s shoulders if something controversial has to be done.

so this zulu family feud has definitely brought out a more uglier side of her and she has no love lost for her husband’s brothers or their children.

3. What other languages do you speak and on what levels?

I was basically raised bilingual in Dutch (true Native) and English. I like to think I’d be able to communicate in German pretty decently by now but it’s probably A1 or A2 haha. My Esperanto has faded but if I polished up on it a bit I’d maybe be at A1 level.

(just putting the rest under a cut bc this is pretty long 😂)

6. Do any of your family members or relatives speak a language you don’t?

I know some of my relatives speak Indonesian, and my heritage makes me want to learn it (bless Duolingo having it now), I think my cousin learned some French in school though he hasn’t done anything with it. There’s a possibility that on my dad’s side someone speaks Surinamese or Hindi, but I don’t know for sure yet.

7. If you want any children, do you want to raise them multilingual?

Yesss! I don’t know what languages yet, but definitely English, and of course the language of the country I’ll be living in then (+ the language of my wife if that’s not the same). Whether I’ll have kids we’ll have to see though :p

9. When and why did you start learning the languages you’re learning?

German I started in school, 2011. I hated it but the teacher was really lovely which is why I picked it up again. Esperanto I picked up about a year ago due to an interest in how simple it was said to learn, and that it helped with understanding grammar, which is true!

10. What languages would you like to learn in the future?

Oof, I have a list of all the languages in my about page which I will probably never finish whoops, but the most important ones are definitely Indonesian, Irish, any form of Sign Language, and Surinamese/Hindi if indeed part of my family came from there.

23. What methods and techniques do you use to study languages?

For German I used a course from a school where you can just study yourself at home, and memrise is perfect for vocab for me. For Japanese I used JaSensei which was really useful and helped me learn the hiragana and katakana which I still know to this day! With Icelandic I also used icelandiconline, though the site isn’t of great quality, it throws you right into the deep end which can be good for those who find that a useful way of learning. Other than that I listen to a lot of songs and try to practice in my head whenever I can.

24. Do you prefer to learn languages at school or by yourself?

I used to hate school because of the languages, but now I’m okay with it. I still prefer learning myself but having someone correct you is the most beneficial help you can get imo.

30. What advice would you give someone who is trying to learn a foreign language for the first time?

👏 expand 👏  that👏 vocabulary👏  you’ll never have enough vocabulary, and when learning a language actively for the first time it’ll be harder to pick it up as when you’re learning your native language(s). If the words have grammatical gender, learn them with them as well because it’s easier to learn that it’s “das Buch” then learning “Buch” and later having to figure out that it’s a neutral noun.

36. What is your favourite thing about the country/culture where one of your target languages comes from?

Bread. I love bread, and so do Germans, so it’s a perfect match:’) Not to speak about the actual irl mountains they have :0 My Dutch self loves me those views. Also a slight guilty pleasure but those high ways where you can go as fast as you want? Awesome. There’s nothing like going 210 km/h down a highway with almost no one around except you and your friend.

38. How does your personality change when you speak another language?

Hmm I think in English I’m more open than in Dutch (from what I’ve heard ESL speakers seem to often feel that speaking in English makes it less hard to open up, I tend to agree). I don’t know how I am in German yet due to lack of speaking experience but I felt quite confident while speaking it during summer school.

41. What do you think about the statement “learning languages is cultural appropriation”? 

Personally, I don’t agree unless it’s a language that’s part of a culture that wants you to ask to learn it beforehand and/or is closed. Other than that I feel it’s fine though. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t be allowed to learn Indonesian or any other language, as long as you’re respectful it’s all good in my book:)

46. How do other people react to your language studies?

Most people around me are pretty supportive so I haven’t had many negative reactions yet! I’ve mainly heard people say that it’s impressive I’m putting so much effort into languages because they wouldn’t be able to do that. (which I disagree but that’s a different discussion haha)

Definitely Not Chocolate Wine

Because life in late 19th century Paris was basically just Another Period but real.

To my fellow non-French speakers out there: vin de coca does NOT mean “chocolate wine.” It really doesn’t.

And by that, I mean: Sensational, sequel to Spectacle by Jodie Lynn Zdrok!

Paris! June, 1889! The same year as The Gilded Wolves! The year of the Exposition Universelle! It’s almost time for the 100th anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille! The Eiffel Tower makes it’s grand debut! Vincent Van Gogh paints The Starry Night! The Wall Street Journal is established! Seattle, in spite of the incessant rain, somehow manages to catch fire! Bustles are slowly on their way out, but weighty ornaments added to dresses is super in! Ribbons! Flounces! Lace! Bows! All that, plus corsets laced far tighter than they should be and no air conditioning! Sounds great! 

Anyway: it’s been two years since the events of Spectacle, and our heroine Nathalie is now 18. Things are going pretty great: she no longer has to hide her identity writing her morgue column for Le Petit Journal, she has a steady boyfriend in her fellow insightful, Jules, and she’s even found a workaround for the memory loss caused by her visions: she keeps extremely detailed journals, keeping a record of everything she does in case she forgets later. With the support of her family and friends, Nathalie might just be able to pull of this whole “insightful who witnesses the deaths of murder victims from the perspective of the killer for some reason then reports those visions to the police but suffers memory loss as a side-effect” gig work. 

Just so long as she ignores all the lingering looks she gives to her friend, the morgue’s police liaison Christophe. And her lingering guilt over the death of her friend Agnès at the hands of the Dark Artist serial killer. And her institutionalized aunt’s deteriorating mental health.

But besides all of that, Nathalie’s life is going pretty well. She’s 18 at the height of Belle Époque, routinely attending the Exposition Universelle with her boyfriend and her best friends. Life is good!

Until Nathalie and her friends stumble upon a severed head among the sculptures of the Galerie Rapp. Then, to make things worse, a spectator jostles the pillar on which the head is sitting, knocking it over. The head falls and, without thinking, Nathalie puts out her hands to catch it.

Much more than una catastrofia con una pelota de beisbol.

Anyway, this causes Nathalie to have a vision, and, faster than you can say “cocaine wine,” the whole of Paris is gripped by the both the spectacle (first book title drop!) of the Exposition, and the rampage of a new serial killer who dumps his victims on Exposition grounds. The killer is soon dubbed Le Rasoir by the press, as they behead their victims with a guillotine. 

Fun fact: the last time France used the guillotine to execute someone was in 1977. That seems far too recent to me, but, I mean, I guess it works...?

So far as sequels go, Sensational gives us more of Nathalie’s story without being bogged down with exposition and questions. We get to jump into the action right away, but there are plenty of callbacks in case you may have forgotten a detail or two from Spectacle. My favorite part, of both Spectacle and Sensational is all the detail we get about what life is like in 19th century Paris. Paris is a fascinating place in general, but Paris during the late 1880s, early 1890s? During the era of the Third French Republic, Belle Époque and the birth of Cabaret? If time machines were a thing, I would definitely go and party in late 19th century Paris - hang around Montmantre, get wasted at Le Chat Noir...

Speaking of which: one of the things I will freely admit is that I don’t speak French. Like, at all. I know a few words here and there, but Deutsch ist immer noch eine wunderschöne Sprache. So, in Spectacle there’s a scene where Nathalie is hanging out with her friends Simone and Louis along with her boyfriend, Jules, at Simone’s apartment. Simone has managed to get her hands on a bottle of vin de coca. Now, for some reason, I immediately thought “oooh, chocolate wine!” 

Yeah, vin de coca is not chocolate wine. That much became obvious as the scene progressed, and I felt like a total moron. 

Vin de coca is wine with cocaine in it. 

Because in the 19th century, that was just fine. I mean, just watch The Knick if you want to see just how much late-19th and early-20th century medicine relied on cocaine. (Seriously, watch The Knick - I’m still pissed that show got cancelled). 

Still, whenever I see the word “coca” I think chocolate. Because chocolate is great. Even though I know a “pain au chocolat” literally translates to “chocolate bread” and coca refers to any of the four plants in the family Erythroxylaceae, but mostly Erythroxylum coca, which is where cocaine comes from. It’s where the “coca” in “coca cola” comes from. Seriously, how did I miss that?

Speaking of pain au chocolat: fun fact, the Japanese word for bread, pan (パン) is a word they lifted from the Portuguese after the Portuguese went to Japan in the 16th century. Pan means bread in Spanish, in Portuguese it’s Pão (I guess the Japanese had a hard time with the tilde and went with the Spanish version instead) and it’s barely a step away from the French word Pain and the Italian Pane.

Meanwhile, in Germany, we say Brot because the Romance languages are insane and we want nothing to do with them. Hurray for the Germanics! In Dutch, it’s brood, in Danish it’s brød, in Swedish it’s bröd, Norwegian? Brød (you’d think it’d be the Swedes to copy the Danes since they’re literally right next to each other but...nope). Icelandic? Brauð. English = bread! And in Afrikaans, Dutch’s weird, long-distance cousin? Brood. Yiddish? ברויט (broyt). Even the Welsh went with “bara” for bread. 

And in Finland, bread is called leipä, because Finnish is it’s own special brand of insanity. Same with Hungarian (kenyér = bread).

Damn, I’m kind of hungry. Maybe I should go and get some bread. Mmm. Gluten.

Anyway, my point being before I got off onto a bread tangent, the word “coca” instead of “cacao” or “chocolat” should’ve been a pretty big clue that what Nathalie and her friends were enjoying was NOT chocolate wine. Also the fact that they started to get really high while drinking it should’ve been a tip-off. 

Also, there’s a scene in season 1 of The Terror where the Goodest Sir, Harry D.S. Goodsir, offers the increasingly frantic Mr. Collins wine of coca as a treatment for his lead-poisoning-and-ice-diving-vision-induced crazies. Wine of coca is mostly, wait for it: 

How that would’ve helped a man going absolutely insane, I have no idea. I mean, wouldn’t cocaine wine make him more agitated? I don’t know, don’t ask me how 19th century medicine worked. Frankly, it’s a miracle anyone lived past the age of thirty back in those days.

Watch season 1 of The Terror. Seriously, it’s amazing. How have you not watched it yet? Also, watch season 2 while you’re at it, both will hit you right in the feels but in different ways.

Anyway - the whole time I was reading Sensational, I was laboring under the delusion that this series would be a trilogy - I kept looking everywhere for the setup for book three, and finished the book fully believing that there would be another book.

Then I learned that this series was to be a duology. Not a trilogy. And that Sensational was to be the end of the story. Honestly? I was disappointed. I kind of wish I had looked that up going in, rather than blithely assuming that all YA serieses end up trilogies (or quartets. Or just, you know, never end at all). 

So while this book does give our characters a nice ending, there are still so many unanswered questions that could very well be answered by a third book. We never did find out what exactly caused Nathalie two-days worth of memory loss that made up the cliffhanger at the end of the first book. Like, what about all the other people who were affected by Dr. Henard’s magical mystery blood transfusions? How many people out there who, like Nathalie, inherited powers from their parents who took part in the experiment? Acgh, there’s just so much out there that can’t be covered in two books! Bah. That and I just need more YA mysteries set in late 19th century Paris. More, I says!

RECOMMENDED FOR: Fans of YA Historical Fantasy Fiction, 19th century Paris, murder mysteries, and badass girl journalist protagonists.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone familiar with the term hemolysis, anyone thinking that this was going to be a three-book thing, Lillian and Beatrice Bellacourt.

Le Loupgarou - Chapter 1 (NedCanWeek 2017 - Sun/Moon)

It’s NedCan week! That means it’s time to crank out some fic that still features our favorite couple but is a little different from Mr 7th Floor (I try anyway). 

This fic is short multi-chaptered thing to fulfill several of the prompts for NedCan week. This first chapter fulfills day 2: Sun/Moon.

Way back when I tried to write a fic about 17th-century trade wars, I wrote about a Matthew/Matthieu who was French/Wendat (Huron) and escaped the genocide of his people as a result of the Beaver Wars by living for a time with Jesuits. I took that basic premise to write another Matthew/Matthieu.

Eastern Canada - early 1700s

It came from Europe. It certainly was not a monster that was native to his home, Matthieu could tell by how clumsily it moved through the forest. ‘Moved’, more like stumbling and crashing, as bad as those new traders fresh off the boat who got themselves killed within the first day - those who had no business being here. Sometimes Matthieu wondered about his unknown father, who had given him his too-pale skin, hair and eyes, physical attributes that made these newcomers seek him out for business more readily than they did his kin. Still, their goods were of good quality, and hunting a creature this clumsy would be easy.

So Matthieu hunted - not just for the tools, tobacco, fur, and other products worth a fortune in trade, but also because he didn’t want some foreign menace tearing his home apart - foreign diseases, an animal that could easily feast on too many native ones to throw everything off balance. He’d already seen what such things could do, he’d kill any new thing before it could do that.

He was lucky it was summer, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to track it for this long. But now he’s willing to speed up. It’s time to end this. He had tracked it for most the night under the light of the full moon, and whatever it was, it wasn’t trying to hide, or couldn’t. Broken branches, scattered leaves, blood and the smell of something foreign in the wind assaulted Matthieu’s senses. He works alone, even though he grew up doing this in a group of young boys, then men, just like him. But now his people are gone, and Matthieu has no one to work with. The Beaver Wars have all but decimated the only people he had ever known. The only reason he’s alive, is because he favors his father’s looks. His mother’s brother had brought him to a French settlement when they heard the enemy was coming, and the Jesuit brothers adopted him without question.

He exists between two worlds and belongs to none, like the land he was born in, in conflict - fought over between nations that have no business being here but they are transforming it nonetheless. His ability to hide and blend in between all these peoples, to speak their languages - to disappear into the forest, or town or port when he needs to - keep him alive. It’s a lonely life, but it’s the only one that he now knows. In his early and more naive years, Matthieu refused to work for any of the Europeans unless they were French, he also would not look at any Haudenosaunee (the Iroquois) if he could help it - those who killed his mother and took his cousins from him. As he grew older, his attitude and practicality had to change. The way he saw things, the English were going to win and if he were to survive, he would have to learn to at least live with them. He was making progress with that but it was still difficult to accept the Dutch - the ones who sold his people’s enemies their weapons without reserve, who had sealed the fate of his family. Until yesterday at least.

They had sought him out - Matthieu had built a reputation for himself as a guide, tracker and hunter. He accepted few jobs but it appeared that despite their parsimonious reputation, these Dutchmen were willing to pay him a lot of money.

Maybe he should have hired more to join, but there was something about this deal that made him suspicious - too good to turn down, which would mean a knife in the back as soon as the job was done. But also odd. There was something those Dutch sailors were refusing to tell him, it was in their stiff manner when they presented to him the silver bullets to kill the thing with.

The tracks seemed to confirm part their story at least, or what Matthieu could understand from their clumsy command of his language - large beast, brought for labor, escaped, kill on sight. The few things that didn’t make sense were the last two descriptors of the ‘beast’ - dangerous, intelligent. For the first few hours, Matthieu had been cautious, convinced that the beast was leading him into a trap, with how obvious the trail was. The other curious thing was, there seemed to be three tracks - a man’s, a wolf’s and the beast the sailors spoke of. It’s possible another hunter and his dog was also trailing this beast, which was the other reason Matthieu was cautious - some would kill before sharing possible spoils - but now he is not so sure.

It is only now that the third possibility occurs to him and he freezes in fear, could it be? No, but…? Their hesitance to talk, the special bullets. Matthieu is young, confident, stupid and has lived apart from his people for too long if he was only putting this together now. But if it’s European how can it be a Wendigo?! And it’s summer! Matthieu banishes his banal thoughts and is able to move again. There was no wisdom that said Wendigos were native only to his land, that was like saying that those baser instincts such as greed, hunger and desperation were unique to his people - why would such a creature be restricted to his own home? But Matthieu had stopped believing in Wendigo during his time with the Jesuits, not because they had convinced him entirely about the truth of God, but because if Wendigo were real, this whole land would be covered with them. The wars had proven that all the nations were selfish and greedy enough to be filled with nothing but Wendigo. But now Matthieu’s mind returns to his childhood and considers. Yes, Wendigo were said to hibernate in summer but they could be awoken.

Had those fools attempted to trap and use one for profit? For labour? Knowing how greedy these traders could be, how dismissive of things they could not see in front of their own eyes and calculate the worth of, it wouldn’t surprise him. And wouldn’t a European Wendigo be just as hopeless navigating his forests as a fresh European man would be?

Whatever it is, it is too late to leave and come back with a full party to lay traps, though it is likely smarter to do so. Matthieu’s curiosity is getting the best of him, as it always does. He carefully, quietly, takes his musket and moves on. The tracks show that the creature has hunted, and is slowing. The trail of blood tells Matthieu it is eating but there’s no evidence of an animal’s neat eating habits here, it is more akin to a human that has starved for days. The scent is getting stronger now, and it’s growing lighter around him, soon the sun will rise. The beast is slowing almost to a stop, so he guesses it has found a place to hide during the day, after the mess it has made overnight. Matthieu quietly climbs a tall rock to get a better shot. He will lose all advantage of surprise if he misses.

What he sees doesn’t really resemble any Wendigo he’s heard about, but the stories range. This beast is covered in heavy grey fur with a hint of a reddish hue. It looks more like a giant wolf than a man, save for its very long hind legs and the clear sign of five fingers and toes rather than paws, albeit with claws. It feeds on a wild boar, which says something about the strength this creature must have despite how clumsy it is in the forest.

Matthieu takes aim, and he’s about to shoot when the first ray of sunlight hits the creature and it freezes, turning abruptly, which makes Matthieu lose his shot. The rest, well, it makes him freeze.

Though the face has a long snout, it’s eyes are nothing like any wolf’s eyes that Matthieu has ever seen. They’re confused and afraid, and they’re green - green like a grassy field. And human.

What Matthieu sees next freezes him in his spot. The creature seems to fight itself, reaching towards the sunlight and snapping back, snarling at it, before inevitably crawling into it, submissive and defeated. Then the change happens and the thing howls in agony - fur falls off in matted clumps to reveal pale flesh, the claws turn brittle and fall off, bones painfully crack into a different shape and the snout shortens back to a man’s face. The howl turns into a human scream and doesn’t end. The man screams himself hoarse as he curls up in pain, his body outside of his control. The sound and sight makes Matthieu’s heart clench in his chest, tears of sympathy sting his eyes. It’s difficult to witness anything endure this kind of pain but he knows he can’t do anything to help, at least not yet.

Matthieu has no idea how much time has passed from the beginning of the transformation to when it seems to have ended, but the man now lies on his back, staring into the sky at nothing. He breathes heavily and tears run down his blood-streaked face. His eyes are the same.

Those eyes flicker to him and widen slightly, before closing. When he opens his eyes, they’re dull. Matthieu only now realizes that he’s breathing just as hard, he can barely process everything that he has just seen. But if nothing else, he knows this isn’t a Wendigo - Wendigo do not change back.

The man speaks, but Mattieu narrows his eyes, he can’t understand Dutch. He jumps down from his rock and walks closer. It’s probably stupid, there’s no guarantee that this man is harmless just because he’s now naked and appears weak but…Matthieu also knows he’s not going to kill him right at this moment, unless he obviously threatens him.

The man freezes for a time but doesn’t close his eyes. He looks at Matthieu in confusion then and tries again. “French?”

Matthieu nods. “Yes, if I must.”

He nods. “I just said, if you’re going to help me, help me. If not, then to get on with it and kill me. I’m too damn tired to fight.”

Matthieu narrows his eyes, still pointing his musket at the man. He knows that the likelihood of him killing the man are rapidly dropping but he still wants answers. “What are you?”

The eyes close with pain. “Loupgarou.” The man sighs as if that’s the answer. Matthieu doesn’t know that word, though he thinks he knows half of it. Loup means ‘wolf’, but garou…? The man speaks. “They said if I laboured for them I could earn a cure. The others...when I met the others I knew it was a lie.”

Others? “There are more like you? How are you-”

“A wolf bites us, or a dog, I don’t fucking know anymore. Sometimes you just get sick and die, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes you turn into a loupgarou - every full moon, you have to change. You have to leave everyone you know, or you may hurt them, so if you’re going to help me, point me to water and let me go, or shoot me and be done with it!”

Matthieu makes a split decision that he hopes he won’t regret. He has no idea why he’s doing it, except that the alternatives feel wrong. While the man is still too exhausted to move, after this latest outburst, Matthieu sets down his travel bag and pulls out spare clothes and dampens a cloth with some water.

“What are you doing?!”

“Dressing you. After this, I will give you water, and you will help me cut up that boar you managed to kill. If it isn’t sick, we’ll cook and eat some and then, you are going to help me bring it back to my home, we’ll dry and preserve it, and I won’t have to hunt for weeks. On the way you can help me think of something to tell the sailors who hired me to kill you, so that they will leave you alone.”  

The man looks incredulous. “Wh...No! You can’t keep me around! Didn’t you hear me? I’m a threat, I’m dangerous!”

“Once every full moon.” Matthieu scoffs. “Which has just passed. Which means we have a month to figure out what to do with you. Now stop whining and make yourself useful. Do you have a name Mr Loupgarou? Or is that what I’m expected to call you?”

The man makes a face. Impossibly terrifying but Matthieu knows he’s just trying to cover his own terror, and perhaps surprise. Matthieu holds his ground and stares right back at the man. Finally the other relents. “This is supposed to be a new world. Why don’t you give me a name?”

Matthieu chuckles without much humor. He wonders if the man can understand what a new name truly means. Matthieu is lucky to still have his, a French name for the French father he never knew, though he had often wished he had a more common name among his nation when he was younger. But his cousins who had those Wendat names had been taken by the Haudenosaunee. If they survived, according to the customs of war, they had by now been given the names of those who had died before them. Matthieu, one of the few survivors of his nation, got to keep his name, only because it had never belonged to that nation to begin with. The world he was born in was dying so fast, so maybe the man had a point about new names and new beginnings. “You may regret leaving that choice up to me. Come on.”

Matthieu stops and looks back after he hears no footsteps behind him. He freezes at the expression the man has on his face. Matthieu doesn’t know what to call it - amazement? Amazement and disbelief with something else he’s never seen before. He feels a rush of heat to his face. It’s not fear, though the rush of adrenaline is familiar. Matthieu figures it’s just exhaustion from the night and it’s time to return home. Thankfully the man realizes that Matthieu is not leaving without him and moves. They return in relative silence.

Notes:

Matthieu was born into the Wendat nation, more commonly known as the Huron, who lived north of present-day Lake Ontario (in what is now the province of Ontario). From what I could discover online, ‘Huron’ was a name given to this nation by the French (it meant something like ‘ruffian’) so they didn’t call themselves that. It’s sadly difficult to discover accurate information about Canada’s First Nation’s online, but when I tried to find out what this nation would have called itself, Wendat was what I could find. I may be wrong, and if I am, please let me know and I will change it. 

The Haudenosaunee Confederacy are more commonly known to us as the Iroquiois, again, ‘Iroquois’ is not the name that this nation called itself, it was coined by the Algonquin, who were allied with the Wendat/Huron. The word means ‘enemy’. The Iroquois lived kinda south and east of Lake Ontario (present-day New York...yeah in my other fic, Matthieu is Wendat/Huron, and Alfred was born to the People of the Flint/Mohawk, who were part of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy...it was all kinds of interesting for their relationship as brothers). 

The Beaver Wars were fought for monopoly over the beaver fur trade (and other reasons) and while the French were allied to the Algonquin and Wendat/Huron, the Iroquois were allied with the English and the Dutch, the latter of which made a lot of money off selling weapons to fuel the war. The war ended with an Iroquois victory and the near genocide of the Wendat/Huron, not entirely by blood (though there was a lot of killing), but also through forced assimilation. Captives were taken in by the victorious side, given different names and from then on became Haudenosaunee. Another reason for the wars is believed to be that the Haudenosaunee were trying to replace the people they lost due to European diseases. There was a custom that prisoners of war were adopted into the victorious nation and given the names of those who had died before them, so some of Matthieu’s cousins are actually alive, they’re just not legally his cousins anymore.  

Loupgarou is French for ‘werewolf’.

12/8/17 – No Contact:  Pet Store Blues

It snowed last night.  In Houston.  What’s weird is that my dad predicted that it was going to get really cold.  Tried to encourage me to take my peacoat.  I like my peacoat but it’s wool and I doubt it’d get much use in Houston.  Admittedly, my fleece jacket isn’t enough to keep me warm anymore but I still have a leather jacket.

Not very vegetarian, but I already said I couldn’t go full vegan. Ignoring the times I’ve eaten meat since I got here. That said, I’m in the 240’s for my weight now.  I was concerned I’ve gained weight but I haven’t.  I’m still losing.  This is a lot of good news for me.  I’m glad.  I was concerned that I was gaining this week.  Seems I haven’t been.  Of course, my progress of which I’m losing weight may have been slowed down but that’s fine.  So long as I’m not gaining. Of course, that’s ignoring the fact that I might not hit my goal by the end of April but not the point.

I just checked my credit.  It’s bad.  Really bad.  My dad told me that I shouldn’t pay my old bills because, “What are they going to do?  Find you?”  Of course, he’s from a different age.  Today, we have this thing called “credit” and that follows you.  So, no. It’s far worse. Thing is, I had the money to pay the bills.  I could have paid all of them.  Instead, I paid most of them and decided not to pay one.  That was when he said, “Don’t pay.” So I didn’t.  And now it bit me in the ass. My dad likes to dramatically proclaim how right he is all the time and how it’s his burden to bear, watching people not listen to him and suffer for it.  I listened to him.  I suffered for it.  I tell my cousin not to listen to him.  I tell him for a reason. My dad screwed me over.  He didn’t mean to, but I was ignorant.  My brother is pretty aware of how the world works whereas my dad is just out of touch.  I really need to establish contact with him again. I’ve basically fallen off the face of the earth with a lot of my family.  Personally, I feel it’s better that way. I wonder if my poor credit will follow me into other nations.

So, Adela came home early because Max had to go to the vet.  I was all aboard until I realized that it’s in a pet store Esther and I went to earlier this year.  She just wanted to look around and we brought Max with us.  I was close to getting pretty emotional, so I asked Adela if I could wait in the car.

I was actually pretty happy when Esther was there.  She was happy too. She was excited to see all the animals and was just… uplifting.  We picked something up, I think for Max.  Canned dog food.  Yeah, that was it.  Because Adela was out and Max wasn’t eating.  He has a lot of mood swings for a dog. When we were about to check out, the cashier asked if we wanted to buy some cat food, which will be used for donations in a local shelter.  I asked a bit more about it and brought up my cat I had in Texas who was a stray so I bought a few of them.  Esther, who was quite supportive mind you, was super surprised.  She mentioned that my current cat was in California and we both looked at her and I told her that we weren’t taking the cat food.  The cat food was what is going to the shelters, not the money. She was like, “Oh,” and was perhaps a bit embarrassed. She was endearing.  I miss her.

I know why she doesn’t want to talk to me.  Because she thinks I’m a Narcissist, as mentioned before.  Like NPD narcissist.  I don’t blame her.  But fucking hell… Shane fucking betrayed me on that. Daniel was reporting everything to Dennis and Esther.  I had a dream that I was trying to explain that Shane was telling me that Dennis was saying all these horrible things about me.  I was telling this to both Dennis and Esther and when I said it, they both rolled their eyes.

Shane said he wasn’t talking to me while filling me with these dumb ideas.  He was filling them with dumb ideas but the thing is, I was the only one who was actually pushed into acting on these dumb ideas. I believed Shane.  Hell, I defended Shane. And Daniel… he chose his brother over me.  Which is understandable but it baffles me.  I’m still friendly with Daniel but I can’t trust him.  I revealed a conversation between Dennis and me earlier this year. About how Dennis was angry with Daniel and said that he would break a bottle over Daniel’s head.  I shared it because I wanted to joke with Daniel but he had no idea what I was saying.  I realized Dennis was lying and because I was upset, I decided to share it with Daniel. The thing is, Dennis was always like that with Daniel.  Like they were never that close.  That’s why it surprised me.  Esther told me that I was trying to turn Daniel against Dennis. No.  I thought Dennis was targeting me and literally gone crazy.  I legitimately thought Daniel was in danger. Dennis has never really said anything nice about Daniel.  Daniel, however, is a good brother.  He’s protecting Dennis.  Daniel deserves better, honestly, but that’s fine.  What bothers me is that Daniel never approached me.  Never told me I’m acting childish or petty.  Never corrected me. People don’t talk to me.  Those who do have their own agenda.

Whatever. Daniel is still a nice guy.  But… he can’t be trusted.  Not because he chose to reveal everything to Dennis but because he refused to tell me anything.  He’ll nod his head and say, “Sure thing!” and then blow me off.  If I discuss anything serious with him, he won’t tell me how he really feels.  If that serious topic is something that I’m legitimately concerned with, then there is a good chance that these concerns will fall on deaf ears.  I’ll get passed over for priorities. Daniel isn’t to be trusted but he can be tolerated.  Shane can’t be trusted either.  And now, I guess he won’t be tolerated.  He isolated himself now.  Maybe. Possible he’s talking to Dennis and Esther again, but I’m not sure. Not that it matters anymore. I have plenty of friends but I have few allies.

So, I was pretty concerned Ariel was angry at me.  Yesterday I pissed her off.  She was in a bad mood and my shitty joke made it worse.  Today, we hardly spoke but we’re speaking now.  Seems she drained her phone’s battery from 88% to 0.

She sent a selfie.  This makes me happy.  Helps after today.

Oh, I had meat again.  A torta.  It’s like a Mexican sandwich.  Has ham and stuff, was super good.  Had it with horchata.  There is a chance that Ariel may come to Houston.  I’ll talk to Adela about it.  As I was drinking, all I was thinking was “I can’t wait to share this with Ariel.”

I know, it seems like I have a love triangle with Esther and Ariel which is stereotypical for a narcissist, but I don’t.  Especially since Esther is having nothing to do with me.  And that Ariel was very important in our relationship anyways.  It’s complicated but it’s not to support my ego.

Messaged my sister earlier.  Was talking to her about credit.  We’re talking now and she’s saying I should get a credit card and it’ll help. Not a bad idea.  She suggests against getting a loan.  Credit card is best option.  Hrm...

Ariel might get a job that pays 10k Euro a month.  Holy fuck.  Like, HOLY fuck.  It’d be with Netflix.  Just has to translate English to Dutch for Netflix.  And she could translate English to Albanian.  And English to French.  Like, she’s quad-lingual.  I’m envious.  I have trouble with Spanish and my Spanish has gotten worse within recent years.

This is a great opportunity.  She has back trouble from a workplace injury.  Pieces of her spine are now titanium.  A job like that would be great for her.  This is exactly what she needs.  And 10k Euro is like 12k USD.  A month.  That’s triple digits a year.  Geez.  I hope I could have her as a sugar mama.  :D

Oof… I don’t want to sound like I’d leech off her.  I was hoping my books would sell and I could live comfortably off that.  But I haven’t worked on them in days.  Since Esther exploded and began yelling at me.  Through the phone.  But if Ariel could afford to come here on her own accord, that’d be easier for me in the long run. I’d make decent pay if I enlist.  I’d save up and use that to move out of the country.  Maybe she’ll still have that job when I’m out.  Then she and I can live together.  Then I could start writing my books again and things won’t turn to crap.  That’d be ideal…

I’m not sure I’m that lucky.  Not that Ariel would pay my way for everything, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to enlist.  And even then, for how long?  And Ariel would have to be willing to wait even longer afterwards.  Honestly, though… I hope she gets the job for at least herself.  I could vanish tomorrow but she’d still have to live with herself.  Hopefully, she can afford it.

Have you ever heard of a Car Insurance doing this?

Have you ever heard of this before: I know a person who has car insurance with Allstate and they claim the following reason for jacking up their prices every 6 months when you pay the bill for the next 6 months. The Reasons from them are: 1-Because since you have allstate and when anyone else that has allstate also in your area has an accident where them and someone else is involved this will make your payment go up. 2-All insurance companies do this also where if anyone not involved in an accident say at home and someone else with the same insurance company as you have, if they have an accident even if your at home when this happens your payments will go up. My Father has had direct for i don't know how long but a long time and every time someone has a wreck that has direct and he is not involved in it he still pays the same amount he did last time before the other direct insurance people have a wreck. Please also provide the name of your insurance company as I want to make a chart of how many people answered and what insurance company they currently have or had. Is It Fine to Do Online Payment Transfer for Impounded Car Insurance to a Company ?

Hi there, I am trying to put a question here for the yahoo community in a bit detail to give a clear picture of situation and try to get some useful information regarding it. What happened is my car got stopped over by police and towed away by their recovery van. Now i am getting an impounded car insurance to get it back ( Long story short , the car i was driving was without insurance as i had not received letter of my insurance cancellation and i was under the impression that i had insurance. By the way i had paid them in full for one year in advance and it was not a monthly direct debit payment ) I have searched and able to get a quote from two well know car insurance companies ( One of them is Impoundedcarinsurance.com and other is INSURENCE CHOICE ) and both companies are asking for DIRECT TRANSFER OF MONEY IN THEIR BANK ACCOUNT as they don't accept Credit Cards and Debit cards for the payment of temporary insurance. Today i and yesterday, i spent my whole days to contact these companies and get information for method of payment. I have a few points here to ask and i am sure your valuable information will guide me to make a decision to buy the insurance for my impounded car. ->First of all, I called my previous company which cancelled my insurance to persuade them for a temporary insurance to get my IMPOUNDED CAR BACK, The customer assistant simply stated that none of their policies can be used to get an impounded car back from compound. So they don't provide temporary cover for impounded cars at all. -> The second and more important thing is as i stated before, i had called a couple of companies yesterday for impounded car insurance ( In-fact i googled Impounded car insurance in Uk on google and it gave the names of main companies on FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE ). If you would ever google Impounded Car Insurance , you would see one of them is INSURANCE CHOICE and they provide insurance for impounded car. -> And with that i called Insurance Choice today and spoke to the person who gave me the insurance quote yesterday for my impounded car and told me the method of payment as of Online Transfer to their account (Yesterday he told me that they don't take credit or debit card payment as mostly people take the insurance and get their car out of compound with the help of the insurance certificate and later on cancel the insurance giving the reason of unauthorized payment and hence claim the insurance money back, so that's why they do online transfer only). Today i was FRANK AND STRAIGHT TO HIM and told him about my question asked on different online forums and all the answers and suggestions which were discussed with me. I told him simply that it looked too suspicious to pay them by online transfer and hence i feared of losing my money and it can be a spam !!! -> Well the person there maintained and cleared his position by stating that He was going to give their company's sort code and Account number and it can be verified in the bank that what company the money is going to if i do online transfer ! Hence i had a record of payment to a CERTAIN COMPANY (Insurance Choice) for impounded car insurance and its all safe. So please advise in light of above mentioned discussion/inquiries that is it safe to deal with this company and do a payment transfer directly into their account.
