Episode 11 - Still much to learn (pt.1)
That last episode was pretty intense, making this next transition somewhat unexpected. This being might be considered a Lunarian, but they’re far more durable than any of the normal ones they’re used to facing. The obvious question’s whether or not there’s other types like this lurking on the moon?
Supposedly that alloy really slowed Phos down as it settled in, but they still have a really good reaction time in spite of that. There’s understandably a limit to how far that alloy can stretch and expand, but this is the first time we’ve seen those lengths. Phos is not all powerful, let it be known.
So, there’s probably a good reason as to why Alexandrite buried their head in books, writing and documenting Lunarians instead of fighting them. Betting it’s because they can’t look directly at them. If all they can do is settle for drawings and descriptions, then the reason for the path they’ve taken seems pretty clear to me. (I forget if this is covered at all in the last episode, by the way) Is it a deep, inner hatred that causes this reaction, or are they so overcome with glee that they enter a berserker mode? Wonder if their power or means of attacking is what finally did in this creature, as Alex’s cuts were far more definite than Bort’s and Dia’s managed to be.
Sensei Kongo was wise to order them to never so much as glance at a Lunarian.
Even in the tiniest puddles of.. that cloudy-like substance that they’d been reduced to, they endured. They’re so dang cute, I want one!! Even Bort agrees, these little versions are far too precious to destroy.
Yellow Diamond ALSO has the right reaction! Something cute, who knows if dangerous, but must pet and cuddle!!! Yet another trait passed on from the humanity of old.
Bort’s frustration with these things escalated quickly. I hadn’t noticed they got so angry they managed to chip their Bort-like selves even. Impressive.
Let it be known Rutile is the most savage Gem of them all, even moreso than Bort. Truly a scientific mind.
Just appreciating the scenery one last time before the series runs its course. Always need to pause and appreciate. ALWAYS.
Final count: 108 little ones. That number probably has no significance. A fairly traumatic day for Diamond turned into one of the funnest for most of the others. Kinda hard not to envy them and all the playing they did as they tried to find the little ones, but I do feel bad for Diamond missing out on this.
Yellow, I really appreciate what you add to this dynamic. Nobody else could say it like you do. Also I forgot to point this out in the last episode, but why is there grass in the building? I’m sure there’s a neat little tidbit of a reason for it, but they don’t go into the why here.
Another interesting use of Phos’ new abilities here. Even Bort hadn’t anticipated this application. Bort in general seems to have shut down by this point and I can’t blame them. This was far from a normal day, starting with that new partnership.
Nothing but nervous laughter as this whole first half of the episode unfolded. In hindsight, it’s a pretty nice breather once again, but it was hard to accept it as such the first time what with that creature.. reforming. Shout outs to Obsidian and their bit part reactions. Probably the smallest amount of screentime of Gems that’ve spoken? I know there’s a couple that we’ve only caught glimpses of that I’m still curious about (Watermelon..)
Another rare moment where even Kongo doesn’t know how to process what they’re seeing. Except there’s more to it than “oh this is... new”
So I was casting the occasional doubts on Kongo this whole time, and this was why. Phos reacts for us in asking why Kongo has a name for it. This should’ve been the first time they saw this creature, this Shiro, but nah, there’s a sense of familiarity. The tiniest versions of this thing make it easy to see as a dog, and now it’s suddenly acting like it’s always been one and Kongo’s pet. There’s no real way to misinterpret this, and it sets Phos on a new path as a result. All because Kongo couldn’t see them buried in Shiro’s fur.
Anyways have one last screencap of Bort bsoding in response to the day they’ve had to deal with. Yellow’s probably having as much trouble comprehending things here.

Episode 03 - Worthy of the Name (pt.2)
Cinnabar gets it right away while none of the other Gems had even considered the possibility. That cleverness and intelligence the others spoke of wasn’t just a case of empty praise. I do wonder if Cinnabar gained a new perspective as well, with their forced isolation? If only the other Gems were more comfortable in coming to them for advice - I’m sure they have much to offer.
It hadn’t dawned on me that Dia wore that sleeve on their head to cut down on the brightness. It does seem rather...risky to have that shining beacon of light for the Lunarians to zero in on. I guess they truly don’t like showing up at night, and not just because Cinnabar’s normally the only one around at that time.
I...forgot this fact. Would it be better to call them twins?
Dia ships Phos x Cinnabar and is the club founder.
And really, it’s impossible not to ship them after this scene.
I forgot Phosphophyllite’s theme played during this segment and damn that track gets me misty eyed every time now. Once the flute kicks in, it sends me over the edge. Always. And the sequence itself - I somehow enjoyed it more the second time! It really showcases what this series is capable of and I’ll forever love the animators for bringing it to life the way they did.
Diamond had no reason to rush back like that, but to leave Phos in that state even a second longer was unacceptable to them. Of all the Gems, they are the most selfless, and that’s why everyone loves Dia. I’m not just talking about the Gems, either. It’s that kindness that drives them and gives them strength to do things Bort never could, nor would. It’s that kind of strength that makes them a Diamond.
Despite the general attitude toward Phos as the troublemaker that half of them said would be better off as a slug, they came together to help and fix this situation when there was a clear and present goal. They really do care, you know?
This sequence..I still have trouble wrapping my head around it. Is it literal, is it figurative, or is it a mix of both? For now I’m leaning on figurative. It’s really hard to imagine what this process must’ve felt like for Phos otherwise.
How quickly everyone shrugs and moves on after Phos is back to their old self. Is this..actually just another day for them, despite how radically different it felt? Also Phos has gained a new ability...the first change has taken place.

Episode 12 - Memories (pt.2)
Well, this is it. I really hope there’s a season 2 someday, but there doesn’t *need* to be. Anyways, Phos had been waiting well over a week to get the chance to “talk” with a Lunarian. It went about as well as you’d expect.
Props to them for having the exact tools necessary to safely catch one without needing to destroy the lot of them. They could always try this tactic out again later, assuming the Lunarians don’t anticipate it or find a way to counter it.
These things have pupils, eh? It makes them seem a bit less.. heartless, but we can only guess at what this really means. The smaller Lunarians always felt like some sort of hivemind, but they aren’t really. At least, I don’t think they are. Would they care enough for their kin to wish to avenge them? What’s the significance of the larger ones? Are they individuals only when fragmented, sort of like with Shiro? That’s all Phos seems to get for now - more questions.
Cinnabar’s always watching and looking out for Phos. Phos probably could’ve handled this, but the gesture is appreciated, even if it kinda cut short their plan. “F...” the lone Lunarian said. No idea what it could mean on its own, but it’s a lead.
I like the parallel here that can be compared with Cinnabar’s imitation of Phos with their own substance from back in episode 3. They really were made for each other, and it only makes more and more sense as time marches on.
Phos’ promise forever lingers on Cinnabar’s mind. Shouldn’t you have maybe returned that? I guess it stopped mattering once Phos lost their encyclopedia job.
Such a nice, serious moment completely unraveled by Cinnabar’s kneejerk reaction. Ahhhh, I love these two..
The series started with a promise. Just when you think Phos would let us down, they’ve come up with a solution. It’s the best way to end the anime, really. Despite all the hell they went through to be put in this position, you could say it was all necessary in the end, in order to hold true to their word.
It was subtle, yet obvious to us how Cinnabar felt as Phos kept running around, going through all these changes while not having an answer for them. Phos might’ve underestimated, maybe even forgotten the exact wording of what they said, but it’s no shock that Cinnabar repeated those words to themselves time and time again.
It’s not quite what they wanted, but they’re nonetheless happy to see Phos keep their promise.
Cinnabar’s the only one Phos can trust with this, but that’s not the only reason they asked them. It’s not because they owed it to them to find a new job, either. It’s because Cinnabar’s shown themselves to be incredibly "prudent and clever.” Even if Rutile, Bort, and the others were similarly sharp, I’d wager Phos trust’s Cinnabar’s judgement and advice more than any others’.
Phos might’ve gotten wiser and more mindful themselves, but they know Cinnabar would be the one to spot something they missed. What they’re going through, doubting everything and everyone, that’s also a feeling Cinnabar’s familiar with. It won’t be a fun job, but it’s most definitely something only Cinnabar could do. It’s a cause, a purpose, far more valuable than a night’s watch. They’ll also be able to enjoy that feeling of being valued and of use to Phos. The feeling might be mutual, even, as they certainly aren’t okay with whatever secrets Kongo might be hiding. To have someone they can *maybe* confide in, that has to count for something as well.
Especially if this endeavor does lead to some answers.
They say they feel distrust, but is that just a feeling that’s been building up inside them? To say this, is Cinnabar attempting to break through that wall of doubt they’ve surrounded themselves in? I trust Phos, and I hope Cinnabar can come to as well.
What follows is one last sequence that serves to tie things up in a book ends fashion. The end of.. book 1, we’ll frame this as. I’ll lay down some predictions and look forward to seeing how right/wrong I am when I finally tackle the manga.
Despite Bort being Bort, Zircon seems to be their own harshest critic. They’ll likely surpass and surprise in ways we hadn’t anticipated, now that they have the freedom to do so. Bort’s yet to meet any true hardships, and I wonder when that’ll change.
We’re given glimpses of many others going about their daily lives. There’s no telling when and which of them will get their time in the spotlight, but just having them all interact brings me joy.
The winds of change continue to blow. Kongo was always a good caretaker. I can only hope the secrets they’re hiding are only for the others’ own protection, but they have a right to know if they were to ask. The fact you refuse even that may be your greatest mistake, and I hope it doesn’t come with serious consequence. Jade’s just trying to help keep this place afloat, so they shouldn’t get in the way, even if they interact the most with Kongo, and might even be considered the most loyal now.
I’m so damn happy they replayed that opening scene. I loved it as much the fourth, tenth, twentieth time. Phos is no longer laying in the grass, letting the days pass them by. Each day is important, and each day has purpose. Their changes aren’t finished, and seeing how far removed they already are from their old self.. it leaves a bittersweet feeling, you know?
We all gotta grow up and mature sooner or later, but it’s important to remember what we had. To lose that would be to lose ourselves. You did indeed live a spoiled life, Phos, but you turned out alright in the end. If you can forgive your former self for their decisions, maybe you can better face the ones you’ll soon have to make.
When I first saw that Phos was gonna go through a transformation I was interested. After seeing it unfold I was ever so grateful I gave the series a chance. I’ve got a weak spot for characters like this - characters that have to undergo such a drastic, yet believable change. Phos will probably be my favorite of this type from this day forward, and I couldn’t think of a better way to honor them.
The colors, the sounds, the music, the characters, the setting, the themes, the story. I loved all of it. I likely always will. After this rewatch, Land of the Lustrous has probably become my favorite anime of all time.
It’s unlikely the manga will change my view on the anime itself, but it makes me wonder if that love will deepen more. With the tone of the story, how much more will it hurt? Will the ending be satisfying? Those are all questions for another day.
I don’t know if anyone’s ever gonna read all these personal thoughts I’ve had on the series, and frankly I don’t care. I’m just glad I took the time to take such a closer look at it. If anyone has bothered to read these.. thank you for listening.

Episode 12 - Memories (pt.1)
We saw how cold Rutile could be in the previous episode, but it seems even they have a weakness. Then again, this weakness has come to define them and has also given them purpose and strength in ways no other Gem has managed. The fact that they’ve kept track of Padparadscha’s progress down to the day shows how committed they are to this Gem we know so little about. There’s history there, and it’s history Phos wouldn’t know since it dates back to a time before them.
It’s that commitment that could explain why they’ve decided to trust in Kongo, despite their doubts. Until Padparadscha’s cured, they cannot devote energy to anything but the most imminent emergencies.
And it’s probably why Rutile’s so dang exhausted all the time.
I appreciate these glimpses of the old Phos, back from before when the story began. It’s been a few episodes now, so we’ve all gotten used to the new Phos. Best not to forget who they once were, however, as some of those traits live on.
Unrelated, but I have to point out Padparadscha’s hair and how much I love it.
Kongo’s theme plays over these words of wisdom. It goes without saying that stirring the pot might lead to some horrible, unforeseen consequences. Phos likely considered this, but it helps to hear it from someone like Padparadscha. To be mindful.. Phos was always a bit too quick to action, but they had some wits about them when they paused to think. Their recent experiences have likely forced a change in their mindset, meaning they can take this advice to heart, and indeed be mindful of this new path they wish to take.
One last “oh I never noticed this the first time,” is how the clouds likely caused Padparadscha to dip back into their slumber. The Gems need light to sustain themselves, after all, and in this case even mere seconds without light is too much for them to handle. Those same clouds that cast a shadow over the conversation they had with Phos - clouds that brought a darkness to the beautiful, peaceful plains they’d been walking through. That same darkness might be what Phos unleashes, if they’re not careful.
It’s only the tiniest bit weird now to see Kongo taking advice from Phos in changing up Bort’s partner further. Zircon seemed like an odd choice, but you never really know unless you try, right?
Without saying a word, Bort really got to Zircon, which says a lot about their reputation beyond how we and Phos perceived them.
A very introspective conversation takes place between the youngest Gems. We never really focused much on Zircon, but they are the closest to being the child of the group now, whether they like it or not. Phos probably senses this and is more than happy to lend their own advice regarding Bort and in general, with their own, renewed perspective.
Even Phos isn’t afraid to admit their own faults. Part of growing is acknowledging those shortcomings, whether you’ve left them behind or still carry them with you. Another ripple in the waves of change as Zircon sees this new Phos and becomes aware of how they became too comfortable with their own role. Stay motivated, kid.
Bort with the sage advice to compound with Phos’ own. It’s easy to view Bort saying “you don’t have to worry about me like that” as overconfidence, but it.. really is true. Good luck, Zircon. Bort is really incredible like that, being able to spot the tiniest flaw and try and help to remove it. They really want everyone to shine.
I think I can better understand why Rutile loves messing with the others now. They need something to keep them going.
As old as Yellow, huh? The major question I’d have here is how active Padparadscha was in the past. It sounds like their condition worsened over time, but it’s hard to know for sure. What is certain is that the guilt Yellow’s forced to bear makes me wonder why they don’t try and assist in some other way that isn’t fighting, if it has them this distracted.
The new partnership will likely benefit Zircon immensely, but what about Yellow? It seems they’d prefer this arrangement, regardless of their own feelings. I’m not sure how they can overcome this guilt without having some purpose to distract them. The hope of retrieving their lost comrades, it doesn’t seem like it’s enough for them.
Nice freezeframe of someone asking Alexandrite about the Lunarians. Haven’t you learned, Phos?
Another “oh how did I miss THIS” moment after all. I thought the papers got caught up in a tree, but nah this was Phos’ arm. It’s really...handy.
Please don’t ever forget that kindness, Phos..
I like how Yellow is just snoozing in the background here. Teacher!Alex at least allows them to funnel their obsession into a form of sharing with others.
Trying to make sense of these formless beings is a valiant effort, but their varied descriptions lead me to believe that no two Lunarians are alike. The Gems nor the Admirabilis are, so why would they be? It can still help, but you can’t just take a glance at one and know what to expect.
It’s weird to think Phos managed to absorb all this information in a single night. Shows how committed they are now, along with their teacher here.
Alexandrite’s reasons are pretty straight forward, and I probably remembered them partially when I mentioned it with the last episode. It is interesting to think about, however. It’s a case similar to Rutile and to Yellow, is it not? They’re so caught up with their own aims, brought about thanks to the memories of those lost or otherwise in need of help, that they just don’t have the energy to consider what’s going on with Kongo. It starts to make more sense that everybody else swept their doubts under the rug when you consider this.
Maybe talking to them will clear this up was what Phos was thinking. Finally, they’ll have their chance.

Episode 08 - Cherish what you have (pt.2)
Alright, this is where things get heavy. Lots of observations to be had. Lots of overthinking. Lots of feeling. Lots of images. Here goes..
Kongo’s seen this sight before, during one of their “meditations.” It leads me to think they’re capable of premonitions, but this might simply be a recurring event for them as the Lunarians’ most valued prey.
Antarcticite’s at home in the winter. As such, seeing them use the snow of the land as their weapon’s something of a given, and really cool to see in action. Given their lower hardness, they can’t rely on sheer strength alone.
I forgot about this line. How new and how recent are we talking? If it’s this very year, then that’s a hell of a change they’ve been going through. It leads me to wonder if losing the other Gems has been something of a snowballing, domino effect of sorts. The more they acquire, the more variety in weaponry they have available to more effectively hunt the remaining Gems.
This means the Gems themselves have to change their strategy. That, or they need to change themselves. This isn’t an easy idea, nor one they could actively attempt, as they’re incapable of natural evolution like the Admirabilis, and their forms are more definite than those of the ghostly Lunarians. The Lunarians themselves seem to be capable of change after all, but as we’ve seen during the Amethyst attack and this new one - they’re unnatural changes. An old trait of humanity is being display here, isn’t it? That’s ingenuity at work.
I have no idea how they missed Phos like that. Maybe they don’t value gold, or Antarcticite is just that appealing of a target? Phos was always somewhat lucky..
Kongo of all people managed to be fooled. This must be an extremely rare occurrence, and it couldn’t have happened at a worse time.
After Antarcticite loses their hand to the new monstrosity, this is their first response. The love the Lustrous hold is a deep and powerful one that is not to be underestimated. In fact, it might be the strongest and purest love among the three groups.
No, not might. I’m convinced it is. It’s the kind of love that can give even the weakest of Gems the courage and strength necessary to tackle any challenge.
Antarcticite is ready to fall apart from the slightest breeze, but they endured. Does Kongo have to do the repairs in winter, since Rutile is slumbering? I couldn’t imagine Antarcticite being able to do it all themselves, but maybe?
That’s.. the right response to anything Phos does (sorry Phos).
They can’t drown, right? Probably wouldn’t do them good to sink into that gold regardless, but Phos you shouldn’t worry - you’re in good hand.
I hate myself for missing this the first time. This is a textbook “good ol Phos” reaction. They’ve built up a mutual trust and respect for each other, and I’m sure any issues Antarcticite had with this arrangement are now a thing of the past. This might even be the first time they took a liking to anyone besides Kongo, given their winters of solitude. I’d like to think they’re even the tiniest bit grateful Phos decided to stay up this winter. (It might not be so easy to see the smile here I realize, but trust me.. it’s there!)
And I’m sure the feeling’s mutual.
It’s a shame it doesn’t last..
There’s that color scheme again. The same one that displayed when we thought we’d lose Diamond. The same one that showed itself when Phos thought Ventri might be dying. It was all to prepare us for this moment. Well done, is all I can say.
Phos wants to cry out to them but even as they fall into pieces, losing any lingering strength they have left, Antarcticite uses that energy to try and keep Phos safe. So long as the Lunarians don’t notice them, it’ll be fine. At least one of them can walk away from this.
“Take care of winter for me.” - Their last words. Like I said, they trust Phos. They’re probably the first to truly do so.
Phos has continuously run into roadblocks, walls, setbacks. Time and time again they’ve been unable to do anything but watch as horrible things happened to themselves and to others. That frustration finally pushes them over the edge, resulting in this anime’s best sequence. And saddest. Images can’t convey it, so if you’re reading this, I trust you’ve watched the episode for yourself.
They always had the potential within them. The Lustrous are a powerful, determined bunch who are only limited by one thing - their hardness level. What if that was taken away? What if they obtained a power that could compensate for that weakness, that ceiling?
Phos must be in excruciating pain - on the outside and within. That won’t stop them this time.
Their body’s still adjusting. It looks like an incredibly painful process, but even if they can’t feel it, they look like they’re ready to scream. If they manage to get ahold of Antarcticite’s captors..
They still have some degree of speed, even after being weighed down by this new, golden substance. They caught up to the Lunarians before the last of them could properly grapple up. I’m surprised I caught this frame, actually.
It must be what fell after Phos was repelled back.
You could never keep Phos down, but it’s different now. They’re focused, commanding, decisive.
We always knew Phos for their clumsiness. It even manages to happen here, but they refuse to let it slow them down. Another weakness overcome.
These Lunarians are deceptively fast. It’s a miracle we’d yet to see anyone taken away before now.
They tried. They really, really tried. They did more than could ever be thought possible, but it wasn’t enough. “You did all you could” is what you’d say in situations like this, but that’s the last thing Phos needs to hear right now. Same as..
As always, Kongo attempts to bear the burden. Not this time, sensei. Phos was already carrying guilt over the Amethyst incident. This one’s gonna haunt them for the rest of their immortal life (assuming they manage to avoid losing any other parts of themselves..)
They’ve slowly been preparing us for this moment. Talking about how others were captured. Yellow’s survivor’s guilt. Nearly losing the Amethysts. Doesn’t soften the blow one bit.
All they can do now is to remember them. Maybe someday they’ll get Antarcticite back. That hope is all that’s keeping Phos from falling apart.
Spring’s on the horizon, and with it comes a new beginning.

Episode 08 - Cherish what you have (pt.1)
Gotta give credit to Antarcticite, they really did try to get them back, at surprisingly great risk to themselves. They’d warned us about how dangerous it was, but we needed to see all that giant ice clattering about underwater to understand that those arms are lost for good.
Oh my god, Phos has finally done it. They finally broke Kongo. (forgot they made this amazing face)
Neither of them want to be there delivering this news and there’s this feeling that they had a mutual agreement in accepting whatever divine punishment Kongo might’ve served them with.
But it’s Kongo, who always blames themselves before blaming any of the Gems for their actions. They’d take a world’s worth of burdens upon themselves if it meant an easier, happier life for everyone else.
Even now Phos still has that snappy attitude. Nothing can keep this one down for long.
It’s like nothing bad ever happened to them! Their body might be fragile, but that’s only helped to make them the most resilient of all the Gems. In that way, they’d achieved a sort of balance.
The Chord Shore. We’ve caught glimpses of this place before, but it finally serves a purpose here. With luck, they’ll find some new material for Phos’ arms. They likely forgot this place existed thanks to having lost all their limbs now. Can only imagine what other memories they also lost this time.
We’ve heard this story before. Might be a bit wary of the tales Kongo’s been spinning, but this one seems entirely factual. It’s.. sad to see all these different gems that made such a long journey, over such a long time, only to end up unfinished and lifeless here. Phos, Antarcticite, Cinnabar.. despite any shortcomings and issues they might’ve faced, they’re still some of the more fortunate ones.
Upon learning of their relation to these incomplete gems and materials, Phos has nothing but admiration and sympathy for them. They seem like the kind of Gem who sees value in everything and everyone. It could be that mindset that led them to make that promise to Cinnabar. It could also be that mindset that allowed them to get along with Ventri in the end, despite how that first encounter went.
These inclusions feel rather mysterious. Just what else could Phos’ be capable of, and is it unique to them alone?
The second that cloud moved away and revealed them, I knew trouble was headed their way. I wonder if they could’ve avoided being spotted by hiding in a cave, the snow, or even in the nearby water?
Well, it’s not like such options were actually on the table here, given Phos’.. condition.
I haven’t commented on how each episode ends with some nice concept art. This is probably my favorite of them, but they’re all really great. Mostly bringing this up as a way of making the preview image for this post be less spoiler-y... but the point still stands!!

Episode 03 - Worthy of the Name (pt.1)
Dia’s the first to make a move, much to Bort’s surprise. They also seem a bit more daring and perceptive in this scenario, despite Bort being...you know, Bort. Easy enough to see that it’s due to their kinder nature, which in this particular case made them the stronger (willed) and quicker to act of the two. Phos was right, in a way. Dia doesn’t need to change as much as they might think.
We have yet to hear the bell, but it is a pretty important way for the Gems to keep alert in the event of an attack. In some cases there’s just no time, which is probably how others were lost previously..
Their light source at night that is the jellyfish means they need to be looked after, and also have a nice body of water to reside in. Rather dangerous pool for a human to take a dip into, but the Gems can appreciate it better. Probably went without saying why that pool was there, but this scene helps ensure we understand.
This is a rewatch, so let’s jump ahead to the question of why Ventricosus is seemingly letting Diamond and the others think she’s Phos. It’s got a pretty simple answer - she’s got an ulterior motive. It’s not too complicated, but we’ll leave it at that for now.
I get the feeling Rutile rarely gets any rest.
In this way, humans have attained a sort of pseudo-immortality. (I’m sure that’s been said before elsewhere..)
I really would’ve loved to see Kongo’s reaction. Anger? Guilt? Acceptance?
I remember wondering why Jade and Euclase just wander off here and don’t have Rutile look after their “burns.” but I guess those aren’t viewed as serious, given that pain isn’t a thing here, either. Probably a simple patch job they themselves can take care of.
I get the feeling Rutile loves their job.
Red Beryl is definitely a minor character but I wanted to point out their first proper appearance anyway, because I kind of love their enthusiasm. Also an early preview of an outfit we’ll see later on! Hadn’t noticed that one before.
We haven’t gotten a proper introduction to Yellow Diamond yet, but they’re one of the oldest around. Their outlook on this problem reflects that pretty well, given it’s one of interest and optimism and not just “well Phos is better off that way since they’re useless.” Alternatively, they could just be trying to help lift their spirits, which is good of them to do so.
Wait what who is that on the right I want a full backstory you can’t just give me a 5 second glimpse of them and then never acknowledge them again!!
Pretty simple advice Phos really should take. Before the promise with Cinnabar, they were pretty focused solely on what they wanted. They’ve got a lot of work ahead of them if they ever hope to be included, whether as an ally or something closer to family.
I love the subtle visual cue here. The last time we saw the moons like this was when we first saw Cinnabar, after all.

Episode 11 - Still much to learn (pt.2)
Fluffy, fluffy clouds and maybe more but really just choosing to view it as a clouds thing. I don’t doubt Kongo on it, but this is the behavior of a parent that would rather not answer a child’s questions, with the hopes that eventually the child gives up. Phos has no choice but to drop the subject here, so.. effective move? Frustratingly so.
Trying to talk to it like Phos could the slug was a good idea, except they’re completely different beings. I can believe Phos can now understand the speech of many organisms from the sea, but not of the moon. It takes us back to that scene where Ventri was bartering for her brother with the Lunarians. Could Phos understand the Lunarians there? It sure seemed like Ventri could.
The old Phos might’ve just let something like this slide, at least for longer than this. The new Phos can’t help but dwell on it, and for good reason. It opens a rabbit hole of doubts and worries as to what this connection could have meant or continues to mean. It could be something harmless, or it could something that will eventually endanger them all.
Another “welp I forgot about this” moment, Cinnabar handing over those shoes Bort lost in the morning’s battle.
I wouldn’t doubt that most of the others would go with the flow, even if they suspected something. Except for Rutile, that one has me puzzled. At least they seemed like the type that would be far more wary of this connection. Maybe I’m underestimating their dedication to The Cause and to Kongo. It’s also hard to imagine they all reached this conclusion, but with centuries and longer worth of time, surely each of them happened upon some clue or bit of info that caused them to think about this.
I thought this part would’ve been more figurative - how Phos might’ve felt on the inside, with all these doubts tearing them apart, but.. no, it really does cause their alloy to give out. I didn’t think about this scene much the first time, but now it has me worried. If this happened at the wrong time, Phos could run into trouble.
If it’s just meant to show how screwed up this new information has them, then that’s fair. Having everything you believed in get challenged like this, it does tend to leave you feeling the way Phos is looking.
I’m probably reading too much into this scene, but seeing all the others curled up and resting with the Lunarian and Kongo here feels like it’s reinforcing how they’re all willfully choosing to sleep on this issue - except for Phos, whose the only one awake.
Antarcticite gave it their all, every winter. They still chose that life of solitude in order to protect everyone else, despite knowing something wasn’t quite right. I hope that doesn’t ruin Phos’ image of them. Though, it might make it easier for them to move on, if you were to look at it a bit more cynically.
It’s as Ventri once said, that the Lunarians are but souls and spirits. It would explain their cloud-like makeup. If that really is the case, are Kongo and the others purifying them? Even if the other Lunarians could be viewed as villainous, Shiro sure wasn’t. For Shiro, they were able to play and enjoy the spirit and life of the dog they likely once were, allowing their soul to finally rest, content. The series continues to surprise, is what I thought to myself when I first saw this moment. I found it interesting that Cinnabar’s theme played during this segment. Maybe just because it was fitting? Maybe.
Right back to business after Shiro passes on. Kongo’s doing their best to avoid the subject. Phos continues to find it difficult to press the issue, and so responds accordingly. Mostly. Kongo must know that Phos isn’t going to let this slide, but they don’t seem too concerned. Is that overconfidence, or them being true to themselves, allowing the other Gems to act as freely as they’re capable of doing so?
Phos might have little reason to enjoy the peaceful moments right now, but they’re no longer the type that’d intentionally disturb them.
While Rutile might be right with this theory, it really would be nice to know what the hell is going on up there.
At least Diamond can enjoy the little Shiros this way. Thank you, Red Beryl.
Right, I forgot there was one last character to introduce! I could never get this name right, aha.. It doubles as a nice way of shedding some light on our local doctor.
I’m wondering if all the samples are lined up like that so that they can soak in the sun’s rays. Will Padparadscha ever be “cured”? It sure would help the lot of them, having someone nearly as strong and knowledge as Bort around. Sadly, they can only hope to have a conversation or two with them every few hundred years.
And it seems like it’s about that time.

Episode 10 - Rippling changes (pt.1)
It’s interesting how most of these characters were present from the start, but as things change, the focus changes with it. The story points out how there’s 28 Gems currently and does a pretty good job of not getting bogged down in 3-5 characters as a main cast. Some, like Rutile and Jade, are expectantly a constant presence, but that’s only because of their specified jobs and not due to their roles in the story.
So, since Phos is on the front-lines now they’re likely gonna have many more conversations with Alexandrite, the local Lunarian fan...researcher? They seemed like a nuisance at first, but the information they fiendishly record seems to be referenced quite heavily. Due to the changing forms and strategies of the Lunarians, their value can only increase from here.
Alexandrite seems to be a bit of a thinker overall as they consider Phos’ dramatic changes and how they might’ve come about. One of the smarter Gems? So long as you can keep them from getting too worked up about Lunarians, anyways.
Seems Phos is still a bit too distracted by thoughts of Antarcticite. Seeing them as a braver, kinder individual.. will they try to emulate these traits as well?
Looks like the interview and trial period went smoothly. Congrats on the job, Phos!..?
Unless I’m mistaken, I feel like the old Phos wouldn’t have noticed Bort lurking like that. Have their senses sharpened from the recent events/experience, as well?
Speaking of observant, Bort seems to be a master of such. Would’ve been easy enough to guess that Phos was checking the recent Lunarian for Gem parts, but for Bort to hit the nail on the head here shows they pay attention to every detail.
I’m glad I was mistaken in thinking Bort might’ve been getting jealous. No, they’re always thinking about the bigger picture and how best to protect the others. They have such a overbearing attitude that it’s hard to see, but they really do care about everyone.
A little bit of the old Phos slips out as they try and fail to get in Bort’s face, and it’s appreciated.
I am so mad at myself for forgetting this moment. I think I love jellyfish now. (Also still loving that whole light source thing they offer the Gems, in an increasingly seemingly accepted responsibility)
From the sound of it, discussing this with Dia sounds about as difficult as dealing with Bort in general would be. Thinking of how dejected Diamond might get from hearing Bort wants a new partner.. yeah, I can see why.
The kind of courage Phos is talking about here - it’s different from the courage they needed to face the Lunarians. It hasn’t come as naturally to them, but they’re working on it. They’re not done changing. They’ll continue to try and better themselves in every way possible, because that’s who they are now.
Phos’ reaction to Dia’s reaction about teaming up with Bort is too good to not include here. The only time we the audience are acknowledged!!
There’s a lot of good lines in this series, but this one in particular hits me right in the heart. Which is to say, my heart breaks as I see Diamond accept this outcome, knowing there’s little they can do to object.
Don’t you dare disrespect Bort or you’ll hear from Diamond. I can imagine they lectured Phos all night. They’ve spent years, decades, centuries together. They have a lot of trouble communicating directly, but they can read others’ feelings without having to say a word.
Phos clearly doesn’t like the idea of having to deal with Bort, but I’m sure there’s a part of them that also hates having to break up this team. As Jade and Rutile later comment, it was a necessary endeavor, but there’s a bit of sadness in the air as they see it unfold.
Another powerful moment. The pause here gives you just enough time to consider a few things. To think that Phos was capable of becoming Bort’s teammate. To think they’d change enough for this match-up to feel so natural. To think Bort’s own opinion of Phos would prompt THEM to be the one to seek out this partnership. The silence here carries a lot of weight to it, and the music once again emphasizes things so perfectly. It’s another case of me really appreciating things more the second time around, which I didn’t think was possible.
But there’s the tiniest bit of hesitation, even now. Of course we know how Diamond feels about this, but Bort? You don’t spend possibly centuries with someone and so easily walk away from that.
I always liked Diamond, but this second watch has made it so much easier to appreciate their character. They’re obviously the kindest and most gentle of the group, but they’re not so one-dimensional as that. They put up a brave face here, but you can tell how much it hurts.
A second round of critique results in this response from Phos. They might’ve appeared annoyed the first time, but only because Bort was not giving pause for Phos to process it all. Another sign of growth is their willingness to listen to others.
Bort loves to critique, and you can imagine how often they’d done the same with Diamond. There’s no doubt it can get pretty exhausting having to put up with that, but there’s that lingering impression that the two never openly discussed their feelings. Bort’s an observant one - not just with techniques but with feelings, too. They could never bring themselves to hold back despite knowing how Diamond felt about it. It’s a complicated relationship and probably the one I find myself most interested in. It’s also probably why I started liking both Bort and Dia more and more, the more time I spend with this series.
Phos and Bort.. the most powerful duo is now ready to steamroll any and all Lunarians that cross their path. As if to challenge this, something new and stronger than anything previously encountered makes its appearance.

Episode 09 - A change in dynamics (pt.2)
Understatement of the year, but nobody would fault you for that. I never fully understood this exchange. Did they lose some memories with their arms, or were they so preoccupied with what happened to Antarcticite and their new winter job that they just forgot? Maybe it’s a bit of both, and it’s hard to know the exact split between the two causes.
The reaction here’s pretty understandable. They all went to sleep seeing Phos one way, and wake up to see this complete 180 in attitude and appearance. There’s this mixture of concern, shock, and amazement, all while trying to process that they lost one of their own. It’s a lot to take in for having just woken up from a months long rest.
Seems Phos can use that alloy for more than just attacking and defending. It appears to be an all-purpose material that can allow them to visualize all sorts of things, and even be used in misdirection. Whether or not these features will extend beyond these lighter moments remains to be seen. Poor Red Beryl can’t create an outfit for something like this, can they? (I believe in them)
I always wondered why Phos had their new legs covered up at this point. Maybe they’re more self conscious about their body after seeing the reaction to their arms?
They hadn’t thought about it until the others had woken up, which feels weird to me, since that’s a pretty drastic change you went through there, Phos. Thoughts of Antarcticite while having to take care of winter must’ve really kept them busy all that time.
Are they.. taller, now? It’s hard to compare off screencaps, but I can see how that would work. It’s hard to explain, but combined with the cut hair, it should be more than enough to cover any lost fragments from back then. Not just a figurative growth, but a literal.. another trait their kind don’t normally experience.
Phos’ response to this question is how nothing good has come of it, to which Bort replies how they’d imagine so. Another case of showing that contrast, as Bort no longer talks down to them, and may even come to see them as an equal someday. They’ve suddenly become more relatable to Phos and to us the audience, which helps pave the way for shedding light onto their own character.
Goes without saying, but it was much easier to appreciate Bort after seeing their interactions toward the end of the anime.
The rare humorous side from Kongo is appreciated. This whole episode is pretty much a breather, and it was sorely needed.
Something you could say of Cinnabar, too.
Which means it’s time for..
Appreciating these transitions that might get you thinking of Cinnabar before they appear. Didn’t pick up on them at all the first time through. Phos trying to make it seem like they’d spent all winter looking for that job.. c’mon, you know you can’t pull off a lie with this one. It’d of been better to have just been honest and told them what really happened.
I’m gonna trust that Phos actually did remember everything about them, despite losing their arms. It’s never too late, though Cinnabar’s patience might be running low. If they did remember Cinnabar, though.. what DID they forget this time?
So they ALL call it nap time behind Kongo’s back. Nice. They ain’t foolin nobody.
It’s one thing to want to go out and patrol, fighting some Lunarians without knowing the risks and dangers that pertain to it. It’s another to have seen the worst of such a job and casually accepting it as your duty.
Their first battle of Spring - this line summarizes how Phos now approaches the job. it shows that they’ve found their confidence, while refusing to let it get to their head. With power comes a whole different set of drawbacks - greed, corruption, pride. None of those traits seem to have taken root within Phos’ heart when they easily could have. I cannot emphasize the level of maturity they’re showing here. It’s not the power alone that has made them into something more, it’s how they’re using it.
Another blink and you miss it case with the Lunarians falling off the platform. I swear, you cannot take your eyes off them for a second.
Thankfully, they miss their last chance shot to take Phos out. Won’t be fooling them twice.
It was nice to see Phos repay their debt to the Amethysts here. That guilt had long since been drowned out with what happened to Antarcticite, but those memories remained. They can finally forgive themselves for freezing up back then.
I was very worried here the first time. It really felt like Bort was getting jealous of Phos possibly taking the role of the strongest, most dependable Gem. The next episode reveals how dumb I was to think those thoughts, much to my relief.

Episode 09 - A change in dynamics (pt.1)
The main theme plays as we start off this episode. It’s played quite a few times by now - either during a revelation or to signal a new beginning. The timing and impact never lessen, yet I feel I undervalued this track my first time through. I thought it was merely good, but nah, it’s great. It really captures the spirit of the series: The mystery, the beauty, the sadness, with a little bit of optimism, and the feeling that we can make our tomorrows better.
The visuals for every scene feel carefully planned out. That desire to pause and appreciate each individual frame has not lessened after 8 episodes, and it will remain till the end.
I was interested in this series for a while, but I have a confession to make. What finally convinced me to watch it was seeing a side by side comparison of Phos at the beginning and at the ending. Their was such a drastic shift in those eyes that I had to know - what happened to them? A spoiler like that prompting me to finally give it a go is something of a bummer, as I really do hate spoilers, but it did little to lessen my enjoyment of watching Phos’ journey unfold.
This is the most drastic and obvious change we see within the 12 given episodes, but it’s not the only one. So many subtle changes were happening the entire time, and there’s a few more that’ve yet to happen. Noticing all these smaller bits of growth has only deepened my love for Phos’ character. And while I haven’t read the manga yet, I know there’s more changes to come..
Gone is the Phos who would be frozen still in the face of danger. Along with their newfound abilities came a new outlook. They may seem pretty jaded but I choose to see this new attitude as the calm and collected sort. They can’t afford to panic nor be distracted. They’ve made so many mistakes in the past that they’re determined to avoid them from now on.
The remaining winter served as a way for Phos to sharpen their new skill-set, with Kongo serving as a helpful safety net. The last Lunarians before Spring show what seems to be Phos’ new routine along with how well they’ve adjusted to a role of responsibility. Love how the alloy can be used from both the arms and the heels, by the way.
They’ve almost perfected their technique at this point, but nobody’s perfect. Seeing them slip up here reminds us that this is still Phos we’re seeing. Significant changes like this can’t go that smoothly, after all.
They still moved plenty fast when trying to get Antarcticite back, so I’m wondering if it just balanced things out? How would this have worked if they still retained their original legs? Would it have?
You could say it’s their skeleton.
Will this be a long term problem, or just a drawback to their power, requiring a bit of extra maintenance after every battle?
There’s a lot to process regarding these changes, but Phos’ goals couldn’t be more clear. They’ll avenge Antarcticite, and they’ll get them back.
Of all the Gems (and Kongo!), they wound up becoming Phos’ role model. I imagine Antarcticite would be happy about that. Forever hoping they never forget that winter.
Yet it pains me to say that, as those memories will always torment them. Phos used to love sleeping/hibernating - yet another part of themselves they wish to leave behind. When every dream’s a nightmare, you tend to prefer insomnia.
I was kinda surprised Kongo’s robes were still in tatters, but their tailor is sleeping so that makes perfect sense.
..Ignoring that, we gotta acknowledge what’s taking place here between Phos and Kongo. There’s no one cause for this changed dynamic - It’s partly Phos’ newfound strength, their change in character, Kongo getting past their own doubts and reservations, and a few other minor factors.
Phos used to be viewed as a helpless child, but now they’re being treated like an equal. Phos themselves no longer fears Kongo nor lets their admiration of them dictate their interactions. With all the other Gems asleep, we’re able to focus on this shift for a brief, few moments as another way of showing just how different things have gotten.
However, we just saw Kongo overlooking Phos dealing with a Lunarian and can assume they’d done so all winter. No matter what happens, Kongo will always look after the others.
The exchange they have about Phos’ constant changes mirroring living beings has stuck with me ever since my first viewing. Phos is one of the Lustrous, but their life’s taken such sharp turns that they’ve been able to experience aspects of life not normally known to their kind. There’s this sneaking suspicion that as engaging and incredible as their journey’s been on its own, that it might become an important catalyst for moments beyond the anime’s scope.
Another thought I had while watching this scene was how much more like Cinnabar they’d become, while intentionally trying to take cues from Antarcticite.
Speaking of Cinnabar, how much of them did they forget..?
Another case of avoiding a spoiler thumbnail but also --- why Morganite?? Feels like this one should’ve been for the first episode.

Episode 07 - How could you sleep through this? (pt.3)
Despite their hardness level, they have a nice advantage over the likes of Phos. I wonder what temperature would be ideal for them? They’ve got precision and strength, despite the drawbacks of their lower hardness. It’s more food for thought in wondering what Phos’ full potential could be.
As much as I’d say the others are fools to sleep through the beautiful winter, this is a fair point on top of the whole light source issue. One wrong step could lead to a fate even worse than being taken by the Lunarians. They could probably be brought back from a state of dust, but having that also happen in the ocean means you’d likely be lost forever.
Phos is a fast learner when they apply themselves.
But they’ve got a long road to walk yet.
As someone who somehow enjoys shoveling, I admire Antarcticite’s speed and accuracy.
Hey now Phos, they’re learning same as you. So what if they, uh, accidentally caused you to slip off the roof while clearing off the snow?
The scariest sight - a sleepwalking Bort.
The loudest gong I’d ever heard. Kongo, have you been slacking on your meditations? He’s probably doing a few extra tasks alongside Phos and Antarcticite, if we’re being honest.
So many good freezeframe shots in this episode, but this one’s my favorite.
I still have no idea how this all ties in together. There’s clearly some connection between these minerals/floes/sinners and Ventri, which is why Phos can understand them. Are we not supposed to understand the relation, am I missing something, or is it not yet time to know? Once again wondering if Kongo’s hiding any key info here.
As an aside, Phos confirming they don’t remember Ventri at all is rather sad..
I admire ya, Antarcticite, but that’s literally the last thing you should’ve said there. I’d be willing to forgive you since you were just praising Phos, but those are not words you can take back. Should’ve kept that wishful thinking to yoursel-
PHOS. NO. IGNORE THEM. They were just thinking aloud a little too carelessly! They appreciate you for who you are, and they appreciate all the effort you’ve been putting into this!!
With a loud sigh, I think to myself: GDI. I will say they were fast about that idea once it was introduced, like ripping off a band-aid.
Don’t ask how, but I actually did forget that this was not Phos’ choice in the end. They rejected the temptation and accepted who they were, flaws and all. It’s important to remember that, because Phos is about to undergo yet another change..

Episode 07 - How could you sleep through this? (pt. 2)
I love wintry scenery so much. It’s one of my greatest weaknesses, which made this episode such a joy to watch. This series had already shown how good it was with visuals, so I knew I could look forward to the visual treats this next story arc offered up.
I just want to highlight this amazing face Diamond makes after seeing Euclase run into Jade.
Rutile can seem pretty harsh, especially to Phos, so this moment where they try and get Phos to go see Cinnabar is very much appreciated. Kinda goes along with a couple moments in the previous episode where Rutile looked at an exhausted Phos with concern.
They’d mentioned how the Gems use light to function a couple times now, but it’s worth noting how it impacts their habits in such a significant way here. It must be due to how cloudy the skies can get during the winter season? In that same way they comment on how Lunarians are easy to predict since there are few occasions where they can even *try* to attack. They can’t feel the cold, but sleep is a universal constant.
Again with the hair thing - I completely forgot that it was so flexible. It’s especially hard to imagine after seeing Bort use their hair as a weapon a while back. I must also say, Bort’s the only one who feels out of place here. I’m afraid to comment on how good they look, for fear of Bort cutting me down. Rutile is looking especially stylish, while Diamond continues to be perfect.
And then there’s the contrast with Cinnabar... Someday you’ll know happiness!!
Enter yet another new character (and the last of the anime’s running), one we’d understandably not met before now. Antarcticite was my favorite after Phos on my first viewing. I think they’ll remain so the second time around, but we’ll see. They’re a very serious soldier of sorts who has no choice but to go it alone, for reasons different from Cinnabar.
There’s quite a few parallels you can draw between these two. Each of their abilities led them into lives of solitude. While Cinnabar’s forced them into a pointless job to avoid causing unease with the others, Antarcticite’s meant they were the only one fit to do a particularly important job that helped keep the other Gems’ minds at ease.
And unlike Cinnabar, Antarcticite can feel as though they’ve earned Kongo’s unconditional love. If only there was something similar Cinnabar could do. If only the night really did pose some risk? But to wish that would be..
I love Phos and Cinnabar’s interactions, but I also love Phos and Antarcticite’s. Don’t know if I like one more than the other, and I’d rather continue to value them both equally.
Another thing they have in common with Cinnabar - Phos somehow has a higher hardness level than them. Still not sure how they view these hardness levels in terms of status among themselves. Can’t think of a good comparison, even now. Is it something as simple as a ranking to them?
Phos was ready to take responsibility. They know they screwed up so badly that now, of all times, they should’ve been put in their place. Staying awake during winter to help with some tasks could also be seen as them trying to amends. “No sleeping in this year, I don’t deserve it..”
“I don’t wanna..” was Phos’ standard response to having to do some work, but they follow it up with this line. Just some further proof that they’re growing. I always love good character development, especially when it results in a complex transformation from beginning to end -- but for now and for Phos’ sake, let’s take things slow. For now.
Turns out Antarcticite’s the perfect partner for Phos. Not as soft on them as Jade or Diamond would’ve been, while not being as harsh as Bort. They’re also not someone who already had a partner, while also being accepting of one. Shame it’d only be for the winter season.
An...interesting issue to have to contend with during the winter. I’m surprised Phos doesn’t break apart from the sheer volume of the screams they let out. The offhand comment about Kongo’s name for them leaves me wondering if there’s something more to this we’re not aware of, similar to the info about humans that’s also being kept from them.

Episode 07 - How could you sleep through this? (pt.1)
Phos has caused the others plenty of trouble, but this time’s different. Even following their journey out into the ocean, they felt defeated more than anything else. Here, they finally feel guilt and remorse, believing they’ve failed their fellow Gems.
Luckily for them, there’s no ill will or blame to be had. Bort seemed like the only one ready to grill Phos for what happened, but that’s Bort’s default response to any situation.
I only just realized Red Beryl was something of an overall stylist besides being a fashionista. I keep thinking everyone’s hair is firmly set, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. A better example shows up later in this episode.
Once again, Alexand-I’m sorry, Lexi comes running at the possibility of some new Lunarian info. They manage to outperform even Red Beryl when it comes to their passion. Just like last time I’m inclined to say “uhh, Lexi.. bedside manners?” They could stand to tone things down a notch or two.
Phos has already started to mature. Nearly losing the Amethysts left a lasting impression and showed them just how unprepared they were. It’s not so much learning how to properly use this newfound speed as it is finding the courage to face their fears. The simpler days of lazing about in the grass are already a thing of the past.
Those moments have been replaced with times of reflection. They’ve got a lot to process these days, whether it’s about their own role in the grand scheme of things or how their actions could and have impacted the others. It’s at this point, I feel, they were finally ready to take on some responsibilities.

Episode 06 - Maybe now they’ll understand (pt.2)
Sooner or later we’ll have met all the Gems! Kind of weird someone like Amethyst hadn’t made their presence known before now, but they don’t seem like the type to stand out. Well, except for the being twins thing. It’s hard not to notice that, which might be why they weren’t shown previously. 84 and 33... I keep forgetting the exact numbers. Maybe someday I’ll have them memorized.
Pretty sound logic in having Phos team up with them. Everyone’s already got their set partnerships, and teams of three can lead to some avoidable problems. Communication is hard enough between two, as Bort and Diamond have shown.
It’s hard not to see this as Phos getting sidetracked, but it’s not like they’ve pushed Cinnabar out of their thoughts. I’m not sure what their thought process is here. Could they be trying to think of a solution through these new experiences on the lookout?
I like how the Lunarians are treated as part of a weather report. I wonder if they’re working off of anything beyond statistics and probability, because surprise attacks are a pretty strong counter to these expectations. Always be wary, Gems.
I think Phos has the right idea, in that regard. Maybe a little too much so.
Not much to report here. Not every day’s an encounter with the Lunarians. Life(?) goes on, as they need to take care of odds and ends. These had probably been the quietest days Phos enjoyed since the first episode, except they’re a bit too overcome by nerves and unease to really appreciate them.
Night of the 3rd day (on the job). The day Phos had been waiting years, decades for? We’ve seen Lunarians before, and the Amethysts are experienced fighters. This should be a good learning experience, right?
The only other time we saw Lunarians that strayed from the norm, ironically, was back in the first episode. The very first fight showcased one that didn’t fade away despite the damage they sustained. Fragments of old friends, Gems, showed up as an enhanced weapon for the weaker soldiers to use. All the weaker soldiers have already been dealt with here, so it’s still hard to consider this as a threat. Doubly so when you have double the Amethyst.
That’s what makes the next moment so much more horrifying, and heartbreaking.
Before Phos is even able to process what’s going on the Amethysts are seconds away from being lost forever. I could say a bit about the Lunarians’ means of attack here, but we’ll save that discussion for a later episode. What’s important here is the reality Phos always knew about, but never truly understood.
This is the life they wanted? This is what it means to fight? This is what they’re truly up against? To think it’d be so easy to just jump into the fray like that.. Phos really was that naive.
Those were likely Phos’ thoughts, but they were also my own as I watched this scene unfold. I thought seeing the Gems break apart would be somewhat bad, but I couldn’t have ever been prepared for moments like this. The shrieks from the Amethysts as they cried out for help, it’s too much..
Luckily for them, the others were quick to act. This isn’t the first time this has happened. The others have such practiced movements that again I wonder, how often does something like this happen? How often do they come this close to losing someone? How could we possibly understand the feelings of those that were stolen away, and the feelings of those that had to see them be spirited off to the moon. How could Cinnabar wish for this? How can Phos go on, seeing the real horror up close?
Unless Phos undergoes another significant loss of self, this memory’s here for keeps. Bort’s quick to accuse them, asking them to explain themselves, and I didn’t quite understand what they meant the first time. I get it, now. Bort wasn’t asking what they were doing, sitting there. They were asking what they were doing, pretending they understood the risks and dangers.
Hopefully now, Phos understands.

Episode 06 - Maybe now they’ll understand (pt.1)
The bell finally rang, though it was hard to pay it any mind until this episode began. It’s nice to get a proper introduction to a pair we’ve seen a few times now. Yellow Diamond's the seasoned veteran, and if I’m reading into things right, they’re pretty fast! Then there’s Zircon, whose not so different from Phos. It’s weird not seeing Zircon and Phos interact given they’re the kids of the group. Wonder how Phos feels about Zircon. Despite being a similar age, one’s allowed to fight while the other’s been kept on the sidelines, all because of the hardness level differences. You just need to find your own way, Phos.
Even without knowing the circumstances, I feel compelled to tell Yellow not to be so hard on themselves. It must feel like something of a cursed life. At the very least, it feels like they’ve learned to deal with this survivor’s guilt.
They’d of had to, if they’ve been around for that long. If they really are the oldest around now, were they the first? When did Kongo come into being?
A bit of foreshadowing mixed into this quiet moment in the rain. Rutile and Yellow are dear old friends, and they’ve likely relied on each other countless times over the centuries.
I like how Rutile’s staring at where Phos was supposed to be resting, expecting them to have just sat there in the rain for who knows how long. I swear, the delayed reactions from these Gems are done on purpose. Either that, or Rutile easily gets lost in thought, which I’d believe.
Okay by this point you can hardly blame Bort’s reaction to “Phos is missing.” Every episode has had Phos causing or getting into some kind of trouble and you can bet it’s been like that for centuries now. Centuries.
Rain keeps Lunarians away...forgot that detail, but it makes sense. While there’s no telling how they’re able to spy on the Gems from up on the moon, clouds *must* get in their way. If only they could live underground..
Unsure who qualified as the fastest before Phos got their new legs, but this scene suggests it was Yellow. According to Rutile, they’re held in high regard. Judging by Dia’s reaction and the way Yellow handled this situation, it’s easy to see why. They’re dependable, dutiful, and have watched over all the other Gems as the years went by.
But nobody’s perfect.
With how much energy Phos has this is far from surprising. Wonder if there’s any more potential locked away...*cough*
Love this exchange. Must highlight it.
First glimpse of yet another minor character whose in charge of weapons. Does that mean all the swords are made of a similar material..?
Despite their best efforts, Phos still can’t handle a blade. Even though they’ve made that promise to Cinnabar, they saw an opening here and just had to try. Can’t fault them for that.
And there’s the ACTUAL answer, aside from wanting to be a more dependable Gem overall. It’s all for Kongo, same as it is for every other Gem. Even Bort. Even Rutile. It’s a kind of love the Lunarians will never know, and I stand by what I said previously with how it’s a different love from the Admirabilis. Not sure the best way to describe it, however...platonic?
Congrats on the job, Phos! It’s not exactly what I was thinking, but it’s pretty close. With that speed, Phos could serve as a great early-warning system. The best way to alert Kongo in the worst situations.
Lastly, the inevitable questioning about what the hell went down in the ocean. Except..
One of the only times I knew what to expect. Of course Phos doesn’t remember. Who knows if we’ll even see the Admirabilis ever again. The memory of “King” is also likely to fade away with how things ended, which is probably for the best? They could’ve been valuable allies, but instead have chosen to handle their problems on their own. With how resourceful Ventri has proven to be, I think they’ll be fine.
Kongo’s reaction here could mean so many different things, but we can only guess at this point. Even at the end of the anime it’s hard to tell just what information we’re missing. Does Kongo hate what humans once were? Is it a wish for such history to be lost and buried? Is there a deeper connection that would ruin the peace they’re fighting for? Is Kongo simply trying to protect the other Gems? Whatever it is will have to take a backseat for now, because Phos’ first day on the job’s coming up.
