Durham Sign Rachael Laws | 14.02.2017
The former Sunderland stopper joins the Wildcats as Helen Alderson prepares to undertake charity work in Africa for a three-month period.
It's all about goalkeepers in the North East, this week! Durham WFC say that Laws, 26, moves to New Ferens Park having made 18 appearances for the Lady Black Cats in FA WSL 1 last season.
The goalkeeper has spent her entire career at Sunderland, bar a loan spell at Liverpool Ladies which saw her pick up an FA WSL winners medal in 2013.
Her fine form in recent years has seen her gain England honours, with the stopper included in several training camps and a tour to China.
She now joins the Wildcats for the FA WSL Spring Series as they look to build on a 1-0 win over Millwall Lionesses in their opening game. She is a fine replacement for Helen Alderson (herself an ex Sunderland stopper), who will be travelling to Ghana to work on a placement with a charity for three months.
Speaking after joining the club, Laws told durham.fawsl.com: “I’m really excited to be here.
“I’ve had a few conversations with Lee (Sanders, manager) and it’s a club going in the right direction and I’m really excited to be a part of that.
“I can’t wait to start with a new club, Obviously it is a bit strange for over ten years but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to getting started with.
“Durham are a club going in the right direction and I’m looking forward to helping them keep going in that direction.
“I’m hoping to be involved as quickly as possible but I know I have to work hard for that.
“I want to have an impact whether I play or not and help the team during games.”
Manager Lee Sanders added: “We’re really happy to have signed Rachael for the Spring Series.
“She’s a great goalkeeper with excellent experience and knows a lot of the team already as she’s a local girl so it’ll be an easy transition for her.
“When we found out Helen Alderson was going away for three months we had to act fairly quickly because it’s not long before she leaves.
“Megan Borthwick has been fantastic when she played down at Millwall last season and in friendlies, but we need two senior goalkeepers as its the sensible thing to do.
“This means we again have the option of two great goalkeepers for the Spring Series - one up and coming and one more experienced.
“When the opportunity came up to sign Rachael for the Spring Series we would have been negligent if we didn’t take it.
“We’re looking forward to her getting involved with the squad and working with Mark Bell (Goalkeeping Coach) and being in contention for the FA Cup tie on Sunday.”

In it’s pursuit of great Canadian soccer talent, Canada Soccer has invited 59 young players to attend both East and West  identification camps for the National EXCEL program.
The camps will take place in Laval, QC 20-23 February (East), and in Burnaby, BC from 27 February to 2 March (West).
Canada Soccer National Excel identification camps give players an opportunity to be assessed and monitored by Canada Soccer national staff, while training with the best young talent in Canada.
Led by Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer’s National EXCEL Director, National EXCEL identification camps will continue to ensure that the Women’s Excel Development Program access Canada’s best talent on the path to the Women’s National Team.
“By casting the net wider in these key maturation years, we aim to ensure no potential talent is missed. With development and monitoring of these players taking place inside Regional EXCEL Centres for the most part, we will assess and build on  the Gold Medal Profiles of these players to  continue producing more Sinclairs, Buchanans and Flemings, by design, more often,” said Priestman. The alignment of our talent development system from regional to national will ultimately create a much greater opportunity to reach the top of the podium at the senior level, not only in Tokyo 2020, but also in 2024 and beyond.”

Scotland Women: Kim Little returns to the squad after 12-month absence
Arsenal playmaker Kim Little has returned to the Scotland women’s squad after recovering from the cruciate ligament injury that kept her out of the Euro 2017 finals.
The national team’s top scorer has been selected for the World Cup qualifying matches against Switzerland and Poland.
Little, who has netted 48 goals in 121 appearances, has not played for Scotland since March 2017.
“She’s such an impressive player,” said head coach Shelley Kerr.
“It’ll be great to have Kim Little back in the squad.”
Little, 27, made her international debut at 16 and and she was named BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2016.
Scotland have won their opening two games in the group, beating Belarus 2-1 and Albania 5-0. They travel to face Switzerland, the group B leaders who have played two games more than Kerr’s side, on 5 April before hosting Poland at the Paisley 2021 Stadium on 10 April.
<!–
After winning their first caps in the recent friendly double header against New Zealand, Abbi Grant and Zoe Ness remain in the squad.
Also included are Rachel Corsie and Christie Murray, who just signed for Utah Royals and Glasgow City respectively.
“We are really excited about the two upcoming matches matches,” Kerr said.
“Switzerland will be a big test for us as a squad before we come back to Paisley for the game against Poland.
“There was a great atmosphere at the Albania game in October and we’re hoping for more of the same this time around too.”
Scotland Women squad
Goalkeepers: Lee Alexander (Glasgow City), Jenna Fife (Hibernian), Shannon Lynn (Vittsjö GIK)
