On a lazy Sunday I went Castle spotting in Scotland. This aerial oblique shot was taken facing south-west and conveys the impressive fortress of Dunnottar Castle. The “dun” is Pictish for fort, further referencing the nature of the place. The castle held true to the name, and famously held out against Cromwell’s army for eight months with only a small garrison. Further, it seems many a notable person such as William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots, the Marquis of Montrose and the future King Charles II have graced the Castle with their presence. THE MEDIEVAL FORTRESS CALLED DUNOTTAR CASTLE

My early influences were the painters and a few photographers.

While photography may have had passing fads according to the customs and trends of a particular period, I rarely come across such a life span in a painting. This is a painting by Walter Hugh Paton, 1867, of the Dunnottar Castle in Scotland (15th-16th C).

Paton chose to create a perspective of depth through the light and shade caused by the storm. I chose to create my perspective of depth through the disappearing steps, the meandering fences and the highlights on the green grass on either side.

Paton’s castle sits on a rocky headland and he allows the eyes to lazily meander towards it. I used the dark sea to embrace the castle, as if it was a brilliant gold nugget.

Paton’s rainbow is bolder and seeks to balance the seawater on the bottom right of the painting. I worked on the strong contrasts due to the sharply angled light and used the rainbow to softly frame the scene.

For me, the combination of a history seeped architecture and a powerful landscape was too tempting to resist and when the rainbow appeared on the sky above, the emotional impact became stronger.

Both are verily different, though as I said earlier, I suspect the painting will last longer!
