---------------------------
Y/n POV
The world was falling apart slowly as war began to spread across Europe. Most of the men who were above 16 years old joined the military, to fight for our country. I joined the military as well as a 20 year old woman, to help and take care of our men as a nurse.
âThis is France.â Mrs Dawson said as she pointed at the map, that was hanging against the wall. âSome of you will go there and help our forces at the front lines, others stay here.â Most girls got excited as they heard about going to France, going to our troops. âWe all move to the military base tomorrow morning, pack light because you donât need anything else than your medical supplies at the front lines.â With that she ended her speech and we all went back to our rooms, getting ready for tomorrow.
ââThe next dayââ
It was six in the morning when they woke us up. âLetâs go ladies, time is ticking.â We all got up and got ready. âIâm so excited, I hope Iâll get picked for France.â My best friend said as she put some makeup on. âThere is a war going on, you know that right?â She nodded and flashed me a smile through the mirror. âY/n, there are the real men, not thoseâŠ.you know from town.â I rolled my eyes and smoothed my dress. âRightâŠ.just hurry up, I donât want to be late.â
The train ride was quiet as everyone was nervous. âPlease let them be handsome.â One of my new friends said. âOf course they are, all RAF pilots are good looking and respectful men.â A small discussion started between a few ladies. âY/n needs a man.â My best friend said with a giggle. âNo I donât, Iâm not here to find a man.â She gave me a look and shrugged me off. âEveryone is looking for a manâŠâ
After a long travel day we arrived at the military base from the RAF. âLadies, I want you all to behave and show your best side as captain Morty will guide us to our rooms.â Mrs Dawson said as captain Morty smiled at us. âYes mrs Dawson.â We all said in chorus. She nodded at the captain and he guided us to our rooms as we passed through a few hangars.
Jack POV
âNurses will be joining us.â Danny said as he joined us at the hangar. âReally?â Josh a new mechanic said as he looked up from his work. âYes, they just arrived.â The mechanics started to whistle as they heard the new from Danny. âCalm down, they are just nurses.â Rafe said with a grin on his face, finding it amusing how the mechanics reacted to the news. âHeâs right, they are here to do their job, so letâs focus on ours.â Tom our squad commander said as he was reading a book. âOf courseâŠâ they mumbled as they went back to their work.
The whole atmosphere between the mechanics was different than usual, Itâs causing a bit of commotion between everyone. âDo you think we have a chance?â Josh asked As he was cleaning his work spot. âHonestly no, if they are looking for a man, they want those ground soldiers.â Danny said as he stood up, brushing off his pants. âReally? Not even the pilots?â Josh looked a bit disappointed at Danny, who just shook his head. âJosh, heâs joking around, of course we have a chance. Women like every man that is serving in the military at the moment.â Rafe said with an amusing smile on his face, as his best friend was joking around with the mechanics.
We all got send off early to our beds as we all needed those extra hours of sleep. âI heard itâs not going well for the French.â Danny quietly said as we were all lying in our bunk beds. âDo you think we are going there?â He popped his head up and leaned over the edge to look down at his friend Rafe, who was lying on his back, his arms crossed behind his head. âMaybeâŠâ he answered, Danny nodded and laid back in his bed. âWhy are you thinking about that?â I asked him. âDonât know, I heard one of the mechanics talking about it this morning.â I hummed and rolled over to my left side, facing the wall. âWeâll see how it goesâŠâ
Y/n POV
The girls were excited as we saw a few mechanics and pilots roaming around in one of the hangars. âThey are all so handsome.â One said as we were getting ready to go to bed. âI knowâŠâ my best friend said. I smiled and crawled into the bed. âI canât wait to start tomorrow.â We all giggled about it, gossiping about them and talking about our future. After some time we turned the light off and laid down in our own beds. âWe should get some sleep, we all need to look good in the morning.â Someone said as a few hummed and agreed. I silently nodded and turned around, facing the wall. âWeâll see how it goesâŠâ
We all woken up by a bell going off, it was Mrs Dawson. âLadies, itâs time to get ready.â Some of us groaned, some of us stood up without saying a word. I slowly turned around and moved the blanket away. âCome on, get up.â Mrs Dawson said as a few were still lying in their beds. âYou all have 10 minutes to get ready.â She disappeared from our shared room and we all began our morning routine.
âThis is the work station for you ladies.â Caption Morty said as we walked into a room, looking like a small hospital. âOur men will stop by to get their medical check ups before leaving for their missions.â We all looked around the room. âAnymore questions? If not, Mrs Dawson has the schedules from all the groups that are in this facility and she also has the time schedules for the canteen. Ladies I wish you all the best.â He gave Mrs Dawson a nod and left us alone, she started to show us the schedules and rules for our new adventure here at the RAF military base.
Jack POV
Danny went for a walk and came back with a smile on his face. âWhat happened to you?â Rafe asked as Danny joined us at the table. âI saw them.â Tom sighed and continued to eat his breakfast. âIs that why you went for a walk?â Danny smiles and digs into his breakfast. âDanny come onâŠâ Rafe said annoyingly. âI only passed by, they were with captain Morty.â I shook my head and Tom shot me a well knowing glare. âI think we should leave them be, they canât have us spying on them as well. The mechanics are already losing their minds.â Rafe pointed at me, agreeing what I just said. âSee, you need to stop Walker, we are here to fight for our country. Not for the ladiesâŠâ Danny nodded, knowing what we meant. âYeahâŠyouâre right.â Rafe gave him a gently pat on his shoulder. âItâs all good brother.â

Gibson and the Shivering Soldier
Chapter 1: Les Solitaires
The shaking in Williamâs hands still hadnât stopped. As he wandered along Weymouth Harbour, it took him a while to adjust to the dry land under his boots, after spending the whole day at sea, being rocked by the never-ending waves.
He watched hundreds of exhausted and shell-shocked soldiers being herded off the boats, welcomed by a throng of doctors, nurses, and joyful civilians. He recognised nobody - all of the men heâd served with were dead. He looked out across the English Channel, across the Strait of Dover towards Dunkirk, but in the darkness he could see nothing of the horizon.
It was the night of Tuesday, June 4 1940, and 215,000 British soldiers had just arrived at the picturesque seaside town of Weymouth in Dorset, southern England; having been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk, northern France, just hours before. They left behind 22,000 dead, scattered across the sand or doomed to the deep water.
Thousands upon thousands of soldiers had already disembarked, but more boats were still arriving at the dock. Hundreds had already been shepherded onto trains and taken elsewhere, packed in like sardines, with barely enough time to get their bearings. Others were having their injuries tended to, or were seeking a place where they could lie down. The low thrum of weary voices, punctuated by the occasional flurry of commotion, was a constant background noise.
Had he killed that boy on the Moonstone? What was his name - George? A blanket-covered body had been carried out on a stretcher, but William wasnât sure whose. Maybe it was one of the burned, oil-covered soldiers whoâd been fished out of the water. Maybe the boy was fine. It had been a nasty fall down the steps, though. William tried not to think about it.
The scent of saltwater hung thick over the port - something he never wanted to experience again. He felt the sudden, overpowering need to get away from the water, from the ever-present sound of the waves on the rocks.
Putting his hands in his pockets to hide the tremors, he turned his back on the sea, left the harbour behind him, and began to wander the streets of Weymouth. Closed-up shop-fronts stood alongside little seaside attractions and a museum of orange bricks. Street-lamps punctuated the darkness with their harsh electrical glow, emitting a constant, faint buzz.
The small town was struggling under the sheer number of evacuated soldiers. Every pub and little hotel was full. Men were sleeping in the town hall, at the school, anywhere where there was space to spread out a blanket. The locals had even opened their homes, but still it wasnât enough.
Drawn to the smell of cooking, he arrived outside a fish-and-chip shop, a hubbub of activity. The owners were handing out hot food to hungry soldiers. Through the brightly lit window, he watched the women bustling about behind the counter, the battered fish and sausages being dunked in sizzling oil, the batches of chips being wrapped up in newspaper pages.
One of the women gestured for him to step inside.
âHungry, love?â she asked as he entered.
âYes.â
âHere you go. No charge.â She passed him a portion of chips and a sausage, wrapped in a copy of The Daily Express. Black-and-white images of Franceâs destruction stared at him from the greasy pages.
âThank you,â he said.
Exiting the chippy, he found a stone bollard to perch on, wincing as he bent his stiff joints. He unfurled the paper and, with trembling hands, started to eat. The first bite was like a little burst of heaven in his mouth. It was his first hot meal in more than a week, and heâd never tasted anything more delicious. He was so absorbed in eating, that it took him a few minutes to notice a presence nearby.
Another soldier - a dark-haired man in his mid or late twenties - was sitting huddled on the curb, hugging his knees. His shoulders were hunched, and he kept his head down, his chin tucked into his collar. He kept stealing furtive glances at the chippy, but he didnât go inside.
âWant a bite to eat, love?â the woman behind the counter yelled out to him, but he didnât respond. Perhaps he hadnât heard. Perhaps the bombs had blown out his ear-drums.
William approached him.
âItâs free, you know,â he said, âIt doesnât matter if you donât have any money. Go and ask them for something to eat.â
The soldier looked up at him. In the stark light of the street-lamp overhead, his face looked angular and almost gaunt. He said nothing.
A faint memory stirred. Darkness on the open water. The crowded row-boat, returning in defeat from its failed attempt to cross the Channel. The torpedo striking and the destroyer sinking, dragging down hundreds of souls with it. The desperate survivors swimming and thrashing about. Heâd picked up a few along the way, until the overcrowding had forced him to stop.
He hadnât registered their faces - the night had been pitch-black, and besides, they were just a handful of souls amid thousands, their faces no more memorable than anyone elseâs. But perhaps one of them had sat in the same way, hugging his knees with the same defensiveness, frowning with the same large eyes. Keeping his head down, as if he were trying to hide his face - trying to go unnoticed.
Then the memory drifted away and was soon forgotten.
âHere.â William held out the food. âHave some. Itâs still hot.â
The young man saw the chips, sitting in the crumpled newspaper like precious chicks in a nest. He glanced up at William, seeking confirmation that he was allowed to eat, or perhaps reassurance that this wasnât a trick. William nodded encouragingly, and the young man snatched the paper from his hands. He began to devour the limp chips and crispy lumps of fried batter as if he hadnât eaten in a week. He probably hadnât.
âGood to be back, eh?â said William.
The soldier stayed silent. While he chewed, his shadowy eyes flitted around at the milling soldiers. Tentatively, he reached one hand in the pocket of his khaki jacket, withdrew a crumpled scrap of paper, and held it out. It looked like it was probably torn from a nurseâs clipboard. Heâd tried to smooth out the wrinkles, but the writing on it remained barely legible. It was one word, scrawled in a shaky hand:
G i b s o n
âGibson, eh?â said William. âLost your voice, did you? Thatâs alright. Itâll come back.â
Gibson hastily stuffed the scribbled note back in his pocket, as if afraid that somebody else might see it. There were a few chips left in the newspaper. He offered them back to William.
âNo, keep it. Iâm not too hungry. I should go.â
William meandered aimlessly away from the chippy, thinking nothing of the encounter that had just happened. But he hadnât gone more than a block when the sound of aggressive, raised voices made him glance back.
âYou! I thought I told you to fuck off!â
There was a commotion outside the chippy. The dark-haired soldier had risen to his feet, and was backing away from four or five angry soldiers.
âFucking Frog! You arenât one of us.â They snatched the greasy newspaper from Gibsonâs hands and threw it on the ground, scattering what was left of the chips. âGet the fuck out of here! Donât let me see you around here again!â
At first, William simply stood and watched without much interest. The mayhem and carnage heâd witnessed over the past month had been difficult to comprehend, and the sight of a few men having an argument outside a chippy was a staple of British life.
But then one of the soldiers shoved Gibson, and Gibson retreated in fear, hugging his jacket around him for warmth and security. The sight broke William out of his torpor. He was an officer, a leader, and these men were fighting each other for no apparent reason. It was his duty to step in.
âStop!â he barked as he strode towards them, hating the way his voice cracked from strain. âWhatâs the problem here?â
âHeâs the problem! He donât belong here.â One of the soldiers gave Gibson another rough push.
âSettle down,â William commanded, âHavenât you seen enough fighting already?â
âYou donât get it. Heâs a Frog. He robbed that uniform off some poor bastard, and jumped the line to save his own skin.â
âIs that true?â William turned to look at the silent Gibson. âDid you rob an Englishman?â
Gibson said nothing.
âHe belongs back on that fucking beach,â the irate soldier continued. âHeâs got no right to be here.â
âHow do you know all this, anyway?â said William.
âBecause we saved this bastardâs life! We saw a fishing trawler going down, men jumping off, so we went over to help. By the time we got there, the survivors had already been picked up by other boats. But we found this one clinging to the debris - he was the last one out, and there was no space left for him. They were just passing him by. Heâd lost his mind, raving like a madman. Probably thought weâd pass him by too. We should have!â
He spat at Gibsonâs feet, causing the Frenchman to flinch back.
âWe fished him out of the water, tried to calm him down, asked him his name. Then we realised he was babbling in French. Français this and Français that. He had British tags on - Gibson, they said - but that was a fucking lie. We shouldâve thrown him right back in the sea! Only reason we didnât was because weâd wasted enough time already. We couldnât sit around discussing it. If we couldâve, we - â
âHe wanted to survive, like all of us. Why are our lives worth more than theirs?â
âBut heâs a dirty little coward. He - â
âEnough,â William interjected. âHe committed a theft, not a murder. Whatâs done is done. All that matters is that weâre back home, with dry land under our feet, food in our bellies, and no Luftwaffe flying over us.â
âBut sir, he donât deserve to be here. Think of our lad who couldâve survived, but died because this fucking Frog stole his spot on the boat. We could have one more Englishman sitting here, but instead weâve got him. He - â
âWe had a boat too, you know,â William interrupted, âMe and my men. A row boat. We thought if we rowed hard enough, we could make it back across the Channel, back to our families. But it was too crowded. We could barely move under the weight, and it kept getting heavier. More and more men kept climbing onboard - English men, British men, just like us. I forced them back into the water. They had families too, and they deserved to come home just as much as we did. But I pushed them off regardless. I pushed them off so that the rest of us could live. Are you going to throw me back in the sea too?â
They said nothing. Gibsonâs eyes were darting around, looking for an escape route, but he didnât bolt - perhaps afraid of drawing attention back to himself.
âIn the morning, we found another boat - a better one, stronger and bigger. We tried again to cross the Channel, but a torpedo struck us. I was left alone on the water. Of all the men on that boat, I was the only one who survived. Not because I deserved it more, but because I was lucky. Thatâs the only difference between this Frenchman and our dead English lads - he was lucky. You could have one less soldier sitting here, but instead youâve got him. Be glad for him. Now be on your way.â
Begrudgingly, the soldiers left, shooting sullen glares at Gibson as they passed him. William watched them disappear into the crowd, making sure that they were truly gone, then turned to look at Gibson. The Frenchman appeared uninjured and mostly unshaken.
âYou should consider leaving too,â William said. âThe next ones who take issue with you might not be as amenable.â
Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked away, leaving Gibson standing alone under the street-lamp.

Kiwi
Kiwi has similarities to Blank Space in that it considers if something hurtful in a tabloid was true. Harry said Kiwi was one of the first songs written for the album after a rest post-1d, he described it as releasing a lot of pent up creative energy in the Behind the Music (at 15:50). To Radio 1 Harry said it 'started as a joke but now is one of his favorite songs' (at 13:43). Mine too Harry.
Kiwi music video
The girl in the flower suit in a hallway is Harry. A blonde boy at 1:05 (on the Cactus line) represents Bleachella Taylor on April 29, 2016.
The other kids start flinging words then food and eventually the Harry/TS kids get drawn in. Harry himself shows up to release dogs, remind us of Dunkirk by crawling in the food fight.
Possibly my favourite is that it ends on a class photo that the Taylor child is not in, like every time they are together. it's genius.
When was it written
MMIH, Kiwi and Sweet Creature were the first songs written for the album, in LA between February and May 2016. MMIH and Kiwi are in this photo of the album taking shape from before Harry cut his hair for Dunkirk.
There is also a video of Harry singing it with long hair in Behind the Album
youtube
Lyrics
[Verse 1] She worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes Hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect And all the boys, they were saying they were into it Such a pretty face on a pretty neck
Harry introduces his muse as a smart, pretty woman who smokes and drinks. He has a similar character in Daylight who does cocaine in the kitchen. Harry definitively said on Howard Stern he hates smoking, so while not literal shows Harry's muse is flawed.
[Pre-Chorus] She's driving me crazy, but I'm into it (Oh) But I'm into it (Oh), I'm kinda into it It's getting crazy, I think I'm losing it (Hey!) I think I'm losing it, oh, I think she said
Stockholm Syndrome, has similar messages of enjoying being driven crazy by a paramor.
[Chorus] "I'm having your baby" "It's none of your business"
The way Harry sings this chorus like a tabloid headline. The âitâs none of your businessâ is directed to the media & listener. Taylor also spoke about serious impacts of these in Miss Americana and sold a parody TS tabloid version of Reputation. The parody tabloid connects that Ready for it? also refers to these, To be so lonely has the line 'I wasn't ready'.
[Verse 2] It's New York, baby, always jacked up (Hey) Holland Tunnel for a nose, it's always backed up When she's alone, she goes home to a cactus (Uh) In a black dress, she's such an actress
The start of Verse 2 links back to Harry's feelings of pent up frustration and creative energy from the year before.
Cactus is a play on words, cactus/prick/CH, however itâs also sung in a way to sound like Cat(us). In the 2015 Grammys red carpet interview Taylor says sheâs "going home to the cats".
Taylor was alone, Harry was touring in Australia, the next time they were seen in the same place was the 2015 BBMAs Taylor was with a cactus.
Gorgeous also includes a line about stumbling on home to her cats alone. In May 2018, long after Kiwi was released, Toe confirmed their relationship with matching cactus photos.
[Verse 3] She sits beside me like a silhouette Hard candy drippin' on me till my feet are wet And now she's all over me, it's like I paid for it (Cha-ching!) It's like I paid for it, I'm gonna pay for this (Oh!)
In the final verse is in the aftermath, his connection with his muse is empty, like a silhouette, a reference to Two Ghosts. Ready for it? also refers to them as ghosts.
'Like I paid for it' / 'I'm gonna pay for this' are about a casual hook up with chemistry. This is a Pay for it is a theme in Harry and Taylors songs about each other (like he paid for it), but he still loves them so will emotionally pay for it. Harry uses similar language in other songs, in Grapejuice "I pay for it more than I did back then."

Weight:Â 190-205lb (86-93kg)
Date of Birth:Â July 13, 1991
Birthplace:Â Dunkirk, NY
Certifications:Â ACSM certified personal trainer (2012)
Degree:Â Marketing BBA, University of North Florida (2015)
Before getting involved in the fitness industry, I was always competing in various sports. Growing up, I played football, baseball, and wrestled. Sports have always been a priority for me. I found the human body fascinating in regards to physical performance. I started seriously working out at the age of 13. Early on, I decided to strive to make my body perform at the highest possible levels through working out and nutrition. My favorite sport was football, and I dreamed of playing it professionally. That was my main focus and motivation in the gym throughout high school. A mentor at the time noticed my discipline and introduced me to the sport of bodybuilding. My senior year of high school I entered, and placed first, in a USBF natural bodybuilding show. I went on to win the teenage category of the NPC Rochester bodybuilding show as well as the NPC Mr. Buffalo competition the following year.Â
As you can probably guess, football didnât work out. After tearing my ACL, along with other injuries, my dreams started to fade. I played a little football asa walk-on at Buffalo State College, but it just wasnât meant to be. After feeling like a failure, I decided to make a big change in my lifeI have always had so much respect for soldiers, so I decided to become one. I left Buffalo State as an honor student, packed my things and headed to Florida to join the Florida Army National Guard. It was hard for me to take a year off of college for military training, but it was a great experience. I became a black hawk helicopter mechanic for the Army and enrolled back into college as soon as my initial training was complete. I have always had so much respect for soldiers, so I decided to become one.
Although I enrolled at the University of North Florida, and had military obligations, I still had a strong passion for fitness. I started competing in the NPC menâs physique category and eventually became nationally qualified. Soon after, I started getting offers for fitness modeling and I took advantage of those opportunities. I loved competing but didnât have the best experience with the NPC. It seemed as though competitors were doing so much for the sport, with little in return. Also, as a natural competitor, it was getting harder and harder to compete in the NPC. It made sense for me to drop out of competitive bodybuilding completely and follow my fitness-modeling venture. This was great, because I was now getting paid for what I love to do, and there was no pressure to satisfy judges with the physique they wanted. Itâs now solely a âyou vs. youâ mentality for me. Many people told me that they were inspired by me and wanted to know how I achieved my physique. I then became a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine so I could help people reach their goals. Although I am certified, I firmly believe that the certification means very little. I realized anyone could become a trainer without any real world experience in the gym. Now, my goal is to create the most aesthetic physique possible, while inspiring others to do the same. There are no specific dates that I must be in shape, for me, its everyday. Iâve implemented fitness into my everyday life and itâs made me a better student, soldier, and person. I strive to share with you the quality of life that Iâve received from fitness.

'Heâs one of the best cinematographers in the business: Hoyte van Hoytema. He has been Christopher Nolanâs go-to guy since 2014âs Interstellar, but has also collaborated as a director of photography with David O. Russell (The Fighter), Spike Jonze (Her), Sam Mendes on a James Bond movie (Spectre) and Jordan Peele (Nope). And now that the fall film festival is underway, Van Hoytema will be receiving his âflowersâ from industry specialists, collecting awards and recognitions for his previous work, as well as the current Nolan movie thatâs still cleaning up at the box office: the magnificent Oppenheimer.
It has been announced that Hoyte Van Hoytema will be honored with Varietyâs Creative Impact Award at the 26th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival. This yearâs SCAD Savannah Film Festival will run from Oct. 21 through Oct. 28, but the ceremony honoring Van Hoytema will be held on Sunday, October 22. The full festival line-up will be announced on Oct. 6, and now Iâm genuinely curious if a screening of Oppenheimer might be part of this yearâs programming.
Oppenheimer has been one of the most encouraging stories of the year with in regards to the push for bringing audiences back to movie theaters. Coupled with Greta Gerwigâs Barbie, the marketing sensation known collectively as âBarbenheimerâ led to massive box office receipts, packed theaters, and reams of critical praise for both films â which likely will help both movies as they enter into the ongoing awards race that dominates the back half of every calendar year.
And thatâs what makes the SCAD Savannah Film Festival such an important stop on the annual awards train. Itâs prime placement in October makes it an ideal showcase festival between the Labor Day weekend trio of Telluride, Toronto, and Venice. And in years past, movies that have sparked some buzz at those festivals have turned up their heat by playing at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, which last year played host to Martin McDonaghâs The Banshees of Inisherin, Rian Johnsonâs delightful sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the dark comedy The Menu, Sarah Polleyâs Women Talking, and Darren Aronofskyâs The Whale, which eventually earned Brendan Fraser his Oscar.
Maybe that means that Hoyte Van Hoytema can collect his first Oscar for cinematography, after being nominated for Chris Nolanâs Dunkirk but losing out to Roger Deakins and his work on the incredible Blade Runner 2049. If you are going to lose to anyone, might as well lose to a legendâŠ'

Oppenheimer (15): Fission + Fusion = Cinematic Brilliance.
#onemannsmovies review of "Oppenheimer" (2023). #OppenheimerFilm. Nolan's stunning biopic that demands to be seen on the big screen. 5/5.
A One Mannâs Movies review of âOppenheimerâ (2023). The âBarbenheimerâ tag for this weekâs releases is slightly bonkers since you could hardly imagine two more different films than âBarbieâ and âOppenheimerâ! Both have been packing cinema screens this weekend (hooray!). âBarbieâ was surprisingly good. But, having had disappointments from Nolan (âDunkirkâ, Iâm specifically looking at you here!)âŠ

Barbenheimer review!!
Haha well
First off, I loved the *experience*. I love going to the movies, but I don't know that I've ever done a double feature in a theater before--there just haven't been many movies that would motivate me to do so, and my money is usually kinda tight, and my parents certainly never did that when we were kids because money was DEF tight and I'm one of four children. I suspect studios will attempt to replicate this shit, but it's not going to work (at least, not as well). The Oppenheimer theater I was in (saw that first, thank God) was about 80% full. The Barbie theater was completely packed. I went with a couple of female friends, neither of whom would normally see Oppenheimer, lol.
I should add--I'm not a big Nolan fan. I have seen, SOMEHOW, all but like, three of his movies, so I actually know what I'm talking about with him--and I think I can say I legitimately like Memento, I like things about The Dark Night and hate other things about The Dark Knight, I appreciate Dunkirk as a spectacle but don't think I would have liked it if I hadn't seen it in a theater, I ironically enjoy parts of Tenet (I think it's like... bad, but I really love the dynamic JDW and RPattz created), and the ONLY movie of his that I love is The Prestige. To me, everything else he's done since is chasing the greatness of The Prestige, you will never convince me that isn't his best work. And EVEN THEN. I think The Prestige, like many movies of its ilk including the Good Plot of Oppenheimer, is chasing Amadeus (1984).
I don't think Oppenheimer is bad. I think that Oppenheimer would absolutely be getting shit on for certain things if anyone other than Christopher Nolan did them, as is often the case with Nolan movies because filmbros give Nolan a pass so often; and I think it is grounded and maybe saved by a very good performance from Cillian Murphy (and I gotta say, it's a testament both to issues in the script and the power of the Murphy filmography that this is not Cillian's best work ever, it's still very good and he's set for a nom for sure) and... as much as I loathe to say this... the best work RDJ, a dude I can't stand, has done in years. I think the movie does a solid job of simplifying what is a very complex story and history (.... sometimes too much) and I think it does a decent job of portraying someone who did something really bad and then regretted it in a fairly gray manner. The movie sympathizes with Oppenheimer, but I don't necessarily think it like... lionizes him. It shows that he's a genius, but like, he was; it shows that he realized that he Fucked Up and tried to advocate for a safer usage of nuclear weapons; but he did.
Here's where we run into issues. This movie absolutely did not fucking need to be 3 hours long. There is NO. WAY. This shit needed to be as long as it was. We didn't need that much backstory of Oppenheimer in school, and Oppenheimer becoming a professor, and the bones of the Manhattan Project. The really interesting shit in this movie, I've gotta be real with you, is not the bomb. The really interesting shit in this movie is the aftermath of the bomb, the realization of Huge Mistakes, and the subsequent "betrayal" by a government that never gave a fuck about human beings, including Oppenheimer. The Red Scare of it all, and the creeping resentment Lewis Strauss felt towards Oppenheimer and the scientific community at large, which I gotta say, Nolan could've leaned into even more considering how that thread connects to the resentment right wing politicians especially feel towards not only the scientific community but academic at large to this. There's where the story felt alive--the Mozart and Salieri of it all, the PRESTIGE of it all. What is compelling is not a big bomb or tons of scientists repeatedly going "you're brilliant, Oppy, but you gotta figure out whether or not you're a Commie and plan accordingly", it is THAT. That tension. One of the best parts of the movie was Chekhov's Rami Malek, because it was the culmination of that tension, you know? Also, the FIVE BILLION TIMES we had Strauss flash back to Albert Einstein giving him a bitchy look. That kind of character tension is where it's at.
But Christopher Nolan is perhaps the most aggressively WHITE MALE filmmakers of all time, so it's really not surprising to me that he thought that The Bomb was equally interesting, and that we needed six billion shots of marbles representing uranium, or whatever.
And the thing is, for all that the movie is way too long, it also skips over shit that is incredibly important. I don't necessarily think the movie needed to delve into Hiroshima and Nagasaki on an "on the ground" level, frankly because I don't think Nolan has the range and I also think that the way it affected Oppenheimer was both direct and indirect, and the film communicated that fairly well. But as much time as the movie spent in Los Alamos, as much time as we saw beautiful shots of the area, and Oppenheimer riding horses around there with his wife, we had maaaaybe five throwaway lines about indigenous people? And like, no acknowledgment of the long term physical, financial, and emotional effects the project had on the community there. That is DIRECT. They were literally right there. And again, I don't think Nolan has the range, but when so much of your behemoth of a film takes place. Right there. It just seems insane to ignore it.
Additionally, Christopher Nolan remains incapable of writing women and convincing romantic relationships, even when he's going off of a biography of a guy whose romantic relationships were quite interesting. Florence Pugh is in like, less than 10 minutes of this movie despite having done so much promo. Jean Tatlock is given so little characterization that if you didn't understand what was happening with her before the movie, I don't know that you would fully get that she was severely depressed and not just Kind of a Bitch until she kills herself. And of course, there is like, a vague allusion to her struggle with her sexuality, which contributed to that depression, but it's not explicit. The scene where she makes him read The Line to her while he's inside her is... I wanna know.... is that like something Nolan read as a rumor to have happened or did he just make it up? Lotta questions there on a lotta levels.
I don't mind the nudity in Florence's scenes, obviously; I don't mind the sex scenes, though the second one was SUPER WEIRD (and by the second one I mean the time Oppenheimer and his wife imagined him naked with Jean riding him during his 1954 questioning). But I found the positioning of Jean as the angry whore figure to Kitty's Corrupted Madonna as super odd. Like, why is Jean shown naked so often, whereas Kitty, Oppenheimer's wife with whom he had a colorful sexual history, who in general was known to be kind of a voracious woman... Never depicted in a sexual light? Why is Jean just Kind of a Sad Bitch until she dies, and Kitty is another sad bitch who is drunk in BASICALLY. EVERY. SCENE and like, hating being a mom and little else? And like, Kitty was a known alcoholic who struggled with motherhood and had a volatile relationship with her husband. But lol, with all the fucking run time this movie had, you could've given more time to making Jean and Kitty seem like people versus thorns in his side, while keeping them flawed. Just like you could've mentioned more about the OTHER dark side of Los Alamos.
Also, one of the best scenes of the movie was in fact Oppenheimer crying in a forest over his dead mistress while his drunk wife rides up on a horse (I assume they don't let her drive a car because she literally can't drop her purse without a flask falling out of it) and is like "PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER MAN". It would've been even better if these emotional bonds had been better cemented. Same with the scene where Kitty stepped up during the interrogation and went "THAT'S MY MAN RIGHT OR WRONG. AND MAYBE I WAS A COMMUNIST IDK I WAS DRUNK."
And let's be fucking real, there are so many things about this movie that filmbros would nitpick if it wasn't Nolan. Einstein appearing out of the shadows randomly in the middle of the night in his cozy sweater to be like "shit bro, sucks that they're Red Scare-ing you". The moment in the end where they were like "and a junior senator from MASSACHUSETS didn't like what you did to Oppy" and I held my breath and went "oh my God" and they went "... and that senator? JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY". The "read The Line You'll Say Later When the Bomb Blows Up Right Now When You're About the Blow Up Inside Me" moment. That shit is so cliche, and I don't mind (most of) it in theory, but if ANYONE ELSE did it, they would be getting dragged, and if this movie was made for people other than white guys, it would be getting dragged, but because it's Nolan, it's fine.
So those are my Oppenheimer thoughts.
My thoughts on Barbie are less complex. I think it was a better movie; I think Ryan Gosling absolutely deserves an Oscar nom; I laughed a LOT. It didn't change my life or tell me things I didn't already know, but I didn't need it to. I think the visuals were great, the costume/set/production designers really came the fuck through.
I will say lol.... I do think you can see where Greta was toned down, because Greta is a very white feminist filmmaker. And honestly, she needs a tempering hand. I think this is probably my favorite work of hers aside from Little Women, which also had a tempering hand. Like, in this case, I think that having a surface level understanding of feminism and patriarchy works for a movie like this. Because while the movie is satire, it's also extreme capitalism, and it kind of goes without saying that it can't go beyond surface level.
I think there is something to be said about like... the reality of Barbie versus what this movie was selling as Barbie, and there is something so interesting about the movie both acknowledging that and totally sidestepping it. Like, that's some fascinating shit, when you really think about it.
I would've preferred a movie where Ken and Barbie fell in love, but I guess I'm just a bad feminist (lol and I had no expectation that the movie would have them fall in love walking in--I'd pretty much figured out the plot before I began the film). I also think that the movie didn't fully make me understand why Barbie wanted to be a human, at all. Like, the human world honestly sucks balls (not in a fun way), and it felt like Barbieland was more actualized and real at the end, so. Why leave. Why would ANYONE leave. If I was America Ferrera, I would pack up my dorky husband and daughter and stay there.
I did love the mother/daughter themes; I loved the "you're so beautiful" moment. I loved the Ken War. I was surprised by how it was acknowledged that women being expected to be everything was Bad, Actually and maybe we do just wanna fucking chill the fuck out and some of us want to do nothing and be moms.
So like, I have Intellectual Critiques of Barbie, but to be clear, I did have a great time and I did laugh throughout and the theater was really fun and I want to see it again. It was a totally enjoyable experience, and I think that movie is going to stay in minds and stand the test of time and be something people watch with the future generations.
But. Lol. They Cloned Tyrone was better than either of them.

My 25 Favorite Films of 2022
Here are my 25 favorite films of 2022:
25. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Ever since Marvel announced they were moving forward with a Black Panther sequel following the passing of Chadwick Boseman, the world wondered if it can be pulled off. Ryan Coogler, the writer/director behind the first film, managed to nurture the second installment with Wakanda Forever, which is essentially an emotional epilogue of a countryâs mourning of its fallen King T'Challa. In Marvelâs strongest outing since End Game, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever strikes a balance of being a grieving process for both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its audience while also maintaining an action-packed story.Â
24. The Whale
The #Brenaissance is officially here to stay. Brendan Fraser gives the performance of a lifetime as Charlie, a reclusive morbidly obese English teacher who tries to rekindle a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter before his health takes a turn for the worse. Based off a play, The Whale is a tragedy directed by Darren Aronofsky (his best film since Black Swan) that rides on Fraserâs transformation as a broken man who both literally and metaphorically carries so much weight. Donât be shocked if/when he accepts his Oscar. Heâs joined by Hong Chau and Sadie Sink, both who give strong supporting performances.
23. Guillermo del Toroâs PinocchioÂ
Only a movie mastermind like Guillermo del Toro can reinvent a fairytale as well-known as Pinocchio and provide Geppetto a tragic backstory and have it take place in the height of World War I Italy. While his interpretation of the story of the wooden puppet is more mature and has more emotional weight than its predecessors, his Pinocchio also maintains its child-like innocence and has enough charm and music to entertain the whole family. A beautiful stop-motion production, del Toroâs feature debut in animation was a huge success.Â
22. VengeanceÂ
BJ Novak, best known as Ryan from The Office (which he also a writer and producer), makes his feature debut as a writer/director with Vengeance, a film he stars in as a New York City writer who gets swept up in the aftermath of a Texas girl he hooked up with her family suspects was murdered, which inspires him to launch a podcast about whether itâs merely a conspiracy or there was foul play. Novak masterfully captures the cultural clash between costal and rural America in one of the most laugh-out-loud comedies of the year.Â
21. All Quiet on the Western Front
All Quiet on the Western Front belongs in the came caliber of war films as Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk, and 1917. The incredible filmmaking gives the source material a new life with remarkable action sequences, stunning cinematography, and a strong cast. This German-spoken adaptation is brutal and gut-wrenching but cinematically rewarding.Â
20. Cha Cha Real Smooth
Cooper Raiff writes, directs and stars in his breakout film Cha Cha Real Smooth, which follows a post-college gradâs journey to find a purpose while spontaneously taking on a career in emceeing Bar Mitzvah parties. Itâs rare for a comedy to establish such a fundamentally flawed yet completely charismatic and good-hearted protagonist as well written as Raiffâs. Cha Cha Real Smooth is likely to be a launching pad for what will likely be a long career for the 25-year-old filmmaker.Â
19. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Rian Johnson has proven himself to be a modern-day Agatha Christie with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, a sexy followup to his 2019 murder mystery flick. Daniel Craig returns as famed detective Benoit Blanc and is joined by another star-studded cast including Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista and Janelle MonĂĄe (perhaps the filmâs MVP). Beautifully shot and extremely well-written, Glass Onion solidifies the prospects of a thriving Knives Out franchise.
18. The Batman
Itâs difficult for any filmmaker to reboot a superhero franchise thatâs been done over, and over, and over again, but Matt Reeves lays the groundwork for a promising new Batman with The Batman. People were skeptical that Robert Pattison could pull off the Caped Crusader since most people know him as the glittery vampire from the Twilight saga, but he pulled it off. What Reeves does brilliantly, perhaps even more so than his predecessors, is how he creates the universe of Gotham City, which managed to be even more grim and visually striking than past depictions, and he already has a stockpile of villains from Batmanâs rogues gallery. From the stunning cinematography of Greig Fraser to the instantly iconic music score from Michael Giacchino, The Batman satisfies fans and leaves them wanting more.
17. TĂR
Cate Blanchett is a world-class music conductor whose past creeps in to upend her life. TĂR is essentially a psychological drama from Todd Field (his first feature since 2006), who wrote an unsettlingly brilliant screenplay. But itâs a film that thrives in large part to Blanchettâs stellar performance that could give her a third Oscar trophy.Â
16. The Menu
If you have a healthy appetite for thrills, violence, and dark humor, then you ought to order The Menu. Ralph Fiennes gives a chilling performance as the chef of an exclusive restaurant who ambushes his diners with a night full of shock, horror, and marvelous dishes. What makes The Menu work so well is its self-awareness and a terrific ensemble cast including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and rising star Hong Chau.Â
15. Bodies Bodies Bodies
A satirical murder mystery, Bodies Bodies Bodies is yet another winner from A24 about a group of 20-somethings whose mansion party turns upside down after one of them winds up dead. The cast of A-list and rising star millenials includes Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott and SNL alum Pete Davidson, who is at his most hilarious. Bodies Bodies Bodies is fun and unpredictable with an ending to die for.Â
14. Nope
Following the critical success of Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele gives us his first big-budget summer blockbuster. Nope is like a captivating and unsettling mashup of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws. Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Brandon Perea and Steven Yeun round out the strong cast. With terror in the skies, Peele proves his funnyman days are behind him and is thriving as a master of suspense.Â
13. X
X is the textbook definition of a great popcorn slasher flick. Up and coming filmmaker Ti West was able to use the decades-old horror formula of a group of hotties being stranded in the middle of nowhere with psycho killers on the loose and lean into absurdity for good scares and even great laughs. X is a helluva good time that has already spawned a franchise with the release of the prequel Pearl, a strong prequel companion with Mia Goth offering amazing performances in both films.Â
12. Brian and Charles
Brian and Charles is a heartwarming mockumentary buddy comedy about a quirky, reclusive British inventor who builds a robot out of a washing machine that ends up coming to life. Its stars David Earl and Chris Hayward, who co-wrote the film, will make you laugh out loud and perhaps help you restore your faith in humanity just a tiny bit.Â
11. The Woman King
Viola Davis never kicked so much ass. The Woman King is a historic epic based on the events of the female warriors of the Dahomey kingdom in 19th century Africa. In addition to the great action and stunts are a rich plot and strong performances by the ensemble cast.Â
10. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
One of the most overlooked films of the year, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a romantic dramedy of sorts that follows a widow who meets with a male escort to help her explore her sexuality. The film feels like a staged play as it almost entirely takes place in a hotel room and the dialogue is incredibly sharp. Emma Thompson gives one of the daring and greatest performances of her career as the witty but vulnerable Nancy as newcomer Daryl McCormack shines as the dashingly smooth yet nuanced titular character Leo Grande. This Hulu gem tackles the taboo subject of sex, tugs at the hearts, and provides plenty of laughs.
9. The FabelmansÂ
No director can capture movie magic quite like Steven Spielberg. The Fabelmans is loosely based on his own childhood which chronicles his early love for filmmaking. For movie fans, this is an ode to cinema and Spielbergâs career. But in the end, The Fabelmans is about a child and his pursuit of his dream, something we can all relate to.Â
8. RRR
Hollywood could take a page from Bollywood. RRR is a spectacle in every sense of the word where everything from the dramatic performance, slow-motion action, to the over-the-top musical numbers. Itâs a sensational historic epic about two warriors who form a brotherhood while taking on the British empire. Despite its 3-hour running time, thereâs never a dull moment. So heat up the popcorn and enjoy this adrenaline rush of a movie.Â
7. Triangle of Sadness
A satire that skewers beauty and class, Triangle of Sadness is the genius comedy from Swedish filmmaker Ruben Ăstlund about the disaster that unfolds on a luxury yacht and the dynamics that emerge between the elite guests and the crew (the banter alone between a Russian capitalist and an American communist played by Zlatko Buric and Woody Harrelson alone is so rich- pun intended). While the entire cast is stellar, Dolly De Leon gives an Oscar-worthy performance as a member of the cleaning staff who takes command when things go south. Triangle of Sadness is one of the best times Iâve had at the movies this year.Â
6. Barbarian
No horror film has filled its audience with more dread in recent years than Barbarian. Zach Cregger makes a stellar feature debut as writer/director who masterfully defies the rules of what to expect the way Alfred Hitchcock did with Psycho. Georgina Campbell and Bill SkarsgĂ„rd learned theyâve accidentally booked the Airbnb from hell. This is one of those films that you benefit when going in completely blind. The thrills, disturbing sights, and even laughs are not in short supply in one of the best horror films in recent memory.Â
5. The Northman
Robert Eggers, the director behind The Witch and The Lighthouse, returns with his largest-scale film to date. The Northman is a blood-soaked Shakespearian-like Viking epic about revenge and destiny with a remarkable cast including Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe. When youâre watching it, it feels like youâre witnessing something bigger than what you expect from most films these days. And it will keep your heart pounding and on the edge of your seat from start to finish.Â
4. Top Gun: Maverick
Sequel-Reboots are rarely good. It was 36 years ago that the first Top Gun came out (and upon seeing it for the first time this year, one can see why itâs culturally beloved but also very dated). Remarkably, Top Gun: Maverick is superior in almost every way. The filmmaking is better, the writing is better, and Tom Cruise has barely aged. Itâs a movie that everyone can rally behind and chant âUSA! USA!â as the credits roll. It was the epitome of a summer blockbuster that was both nostalgic and refreshing. For a movie that was supposed to come out in July 2019 and was postponed six times due to COVID, Top Gun Maverick was worth the wait.
3. Emergency
Ever imagine what a combination of Superbad and Crash might look like? Emergency would be it. RJ Cyler and Donald Elise Watkins star as two best friends on the cusp of graduating college who want to make history with a legendary night of partying, which quickly gets derailed by due to unforeseen circumstances. The first two acts are frickinâ hilarious but the final act takes a dramatic turn, something that rarely works but does in this case. Emergency is a coming-of-age comedy that takes tackles race and identity in a way that neither feels like lecturing nor pandering. Itâs easily one of the biggest surprises of the year.Â
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
The plot is bizarre yet simple: One man abruptly ends his lifelong friendship with the other without warning, leaving the other man perplexed and demanding answers, which only leads to trouble for the both of them. The Banshees of Inisherin is the latest gem from writer/director Martin McDonagh that balances humor and discomfort led by outstanding lead performances from Colin Ferrell and Brendan Gleeson. The Banshees of Inisherin is a well-written dramedy that will make you laugh just as much as it will make you cringe.Â
1. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Multiverse films are all the rage in Hollywood these days but Everything Everywhere All at Once is the one that tops them all. Michelle Yeoh gives the performance of her career as a struggling laundromat owner who learns about the existence of other universes and how it is up to her to save them all. Sheâs joined by Ke Huy Quan (of Goonies/Temple of Doom fame), who will likely launch a major comeback, newcomer Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis, rounding out a remarkable cast. The Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) wrote and directed a mind-blowing, genre-bending film full of laughs, action, family drama. and suspense. Not since The Matrix has a sci-fi/fantasy film been able be so confident in the universe it has created and in such an entertaining way. Everything Everywhere All at Once is everything you want in a movie, which is why itâs the best of 2022. Â
