The light was casting shadows against the screen. It had grown so quiet she thought Chani might have left, and slipped into her night shift before stepping back out; but Chani was still there, standing, arms folded uncertainly over her chest. Irulan was aware, suddenly, of the breeze that coursed through the room, the faint glowglobes that twinkled, casting strips across the floor and Chani’s skin. Her own night shift was thin, a slip of satin, with string-thin sleeves meant to be covered by blankets. Her hair was loose and messy. Chani was, by contrast, sharp and put together, still in her Fedaykin uniform, only without the stillsuit, hair pulled back into a tight bun. “I have acted uncharitably,” Chani said quietly. “You were invaluable today.” Irulan turned away. She raised a hand to her shoulder, the juncture of her neck, pressing down at the ache that had built. And the next moment she felt, rather than heard, Chani come up behind her, fingers ghosting over her skin. “Here?” Irulan could not move. “What?” “Here,” Chani repeated. “Is this where it hurts?” The pads of her fingers pressed harder on Irulan’s shoulders, and it was a welcome pressure, pleasurable, and Irulan could not bear to give it up. She felt her posture loosen, tension bleeding out as Chani kneaded into her back with rhythmic, gentle care. And it was — it was painfully good. “Ohhh,” Irulan exhaled, eyes closed. “There, I — there.”

“Are we dancing, Muad’Dib?” Feyd felt the stirring of longing in his gut. He wanted to be done with this, to retire to Paul’s chamber and fuck him well into the night. But Paul stepped forward, and Feyd tried to match his movement, sinking low. Lisan al-Gaib, the great Muad’Dib, was Paul Atreides in that moment. The prince from Caladan. His rueful smile and the slight tilt to his eyes, almost rolling, peeled back the iron shielding Feyd-Rautha’s blackened heart. He hopped forward, and they were locked again, swinging, dodging, kicking, tumbling. Feyd-Rautha paid attention. Matched Paul’s energy, mimicked his movements.  Every time Paul breathed out, “Like that,” Feyd’s chest grew a little tighter. “Good, yes.” As Feyd swung lightly, twirled gracefully. “Very good, Baron Harkonnen,” said on a raspy laugh, causing Feyd to falter. He regained his composure and knocked Paul backward. “This is what the Fedaykin need to see. Good — excellent, Feyd.”

Lots of good information and resources to help you with this event, as well as information on other events which I run.

What is the Dune Mini Bang? A Mini Bang (or Big Bang) is a collaboration between writers and artists who work together to produce fandom-inspired content, in this case Dune, and share it with the world. A writer and an artist are paired up, the writer well writes and the artist will create some form of visual content to go along with their story. The work is then posted together on a selected date at the end of the writing period.

Where can I post my fics/art? Stories and art can be posted to your own personal journal, Tumblr, ff-net, AO3, or wherever you like. For those of you with AO3 accounts, we will set up a collection that will go live on the day of the posting. If you don’t currently have an AO3 account but would like one, you can contact the mods for an invitation code to see if they have any available. You can also add yourself to the AO3 Invites Request queue.

For posting on other social media platforms, such as tumblr or twitter, please tag duneminibang2023 and @dunefandomevents , spread the word!

When do I start posting? We will open the posting date claims ahead of the close date. How many days it will be spread out will depend on how many writers we have signed up. If your story is multi-chaptered it does not need to be posted all at once, you should start posting chapters early so the story can be listed as completed by your posting date. You will be able to select a preference for where in the queue you are but ultimately your posting date will be selected by the moderation team.

What platform are these being advertised/posted on? AO3 will host the main archive collection - The collection will be created and ready to go for the Sept 3rd posting start date. Tumblr - Used for advertising signups and after posting starts we will cross post all stories to a masterlist. Twitter - Used for advertising signups and after posting starts we will be cross posting -  Linking AO3 collection / Tumblr masterpost. Reddit - Will be used for advertising signups.

The only account we really recommend to have is AO3 as it is the main collection but so long as you have somewhere you can post your story when it is completed and link it to us that is fine. If you do not already have an AO3 account and would like one please contact us on the discord server or send an email to duneminibang@gmail.com and we will see if anyone has an invitation code available.

What if I have issues or concerns with my artist/author? Sometimes authors and artists do not get along and this may cause problems with working together. If this happens to be the case with you, please email or contact the mods on Discord and we will try to do what we can so that everyone has a chance to have fun!

If you have not heard from your author/artist in some time after trying to contact them, you can reach out to us via email/discord and we will try to get in touch with them for you.

Extensions? I am pretty attached to the idea of starting posting on the anniversary of the Dune Premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sept 3rd but if you really really need one please email the mods as soon as possible. One easy option would be to select one of the later posting dates but if that doesn't work we may allow a few extra days. 

Can I drop out? We have high hopes that everybody who signs up can actually finish the round and share in the joy of the reveal with us, but real life can unfortunately get in the way and we completely understand! If you feel like you just cannot finish in time and no amount of assistance from us can help you, just let us know by asap! Ideally we would wish to know before artist claims have opened.

Is it possible to be banned? Yes it is. The following events will result in being removed from the event and a one event ban on next year; Lying about your age in order to gain access to the 18+ content Hate on another participant for their ship/character/content - we are allowing ALL content for the mini bang. Hate on another participant for any reason really Failure to meet the event requirements

WRITER FAQ

What are the word count requirements? Stories for this event should have a minimum word count of 5000 words. There is no official maximum word count but keep in mind the story must be completed and ready for posting by the due date. Ideally we are asking for the stories in this event to be brand new, started and finished during the course of the event. If you would like to enter with an existing WIP we ask that you do not post any updates to the story until the event has finished. 

Allowable story types; Prose, screenplay, poetry, podfic, or a translation of an existing story. One-shot or multi chaptered. So long as the 5k word count is reached then it is good to go.

What is Allowed? It is open to all duniverses/adaptations, any rating or pairing. This includes OCs and Y/N stories though we want to warn authors that those kinds of stories have historically been hard to get an artist claim. If you are able to provide references such as face claims that would be great, or if after consulting with your artists they may choose not to include the OCs at all. These extra details should be submitted with your snippet submissions. Open to AUs or crossovers with other fandom universes but we require that the main character or cast of characters be from Dune. 

Ex 1. Original Main Character set in the Dune Universe with the cast of Dune characters along for the ride. A-OK. Ex 2. Paul Atreides gets teleported to the Star Wars Universe and is now a Jedi. A-OK.

If you are not sure if your concept will be allowed please feel free to message mods ahead of time.

What is Not Allowed? At this time we are saying yes to everything. ((except the scenario mentioned above)) Yes, EVERYTHING (even incest pairings), so long as your story is appropriately tagged. Like tag all the things, over tag, cannot have too many tags. Please keep in mind if you are using a pairing or a trope/kink which is considered controversial that you might receive negative feedback after posting or struggle to get an artist claim.

How many stories can I submit? We are limiting entries to one per writer but your story may be multi-chaptered so long as all chapters are completed by September 1st and has been fully uploaded by the assigned posting date. 

What are check-ins? These are a way for us to see what you’ve been up to and for you to make sure you’re still on track. It will give you a little nudge/reminder if you need it, but they are not compulsory. A form will be emailed out to the address you provided at sign up and posted to the discord server.

We will not be mandating a certain percentage completed between each check in but a good goal point would be; check in 1 = 30% story written, check in 2 = 60% and rough draft due = 80%

What are snippets? We are requesting 2 snippets from each author, 500 words maximum each for artists to use for artist claims. They can be from any section of your story. Literally, just copy and paste a few paragraphs into a document and send it to us. You should also include any visual references needed if your story contains an original character which you may want your artist to incorporate. They can be submitted via email anytime after the event starts until the snippet due date on June 30th.

Once claims have been finished we will be emailing, and posting on discord the final pair ups.

This year we are allowing Writers to find an artist prior to registration and have their concept pre-claimed. If this is the case then a snippet is not required. You just need to provide us with the artist's name when you sign up and they will need to complete the artist sign up when the time comes.

Rough draft requirements? For the rough drafts, stories should be at least 80% complete. You will not have to turn them in to us, just assure us that you are at that point. Anything less is at the discretion of the mods and those authors should speak to one of the mods asap. We will help you as much as possible to ensure the story gets completed on time.

What is, and do I need, a beta? A beta is basically a person who goes over your work to make sure that there are no spelling/grammatical errors and they can even be of assistance in helping you with story lines, etc. It is highly recommended that a beta looks over your work before posting. If you are having trouble finding a beta, try the event discord server. Don't wait too long to go looking though!

ARTIST FAQ

Minimum/Maximum requirements for art? There is no strict minimum, but we do ask artists to remember that the authors are writing a minimum of 5,000 words and your artwork should reflect that. You can do anything you like, including banners, wallpapers, icons, mixes, vids, gif sets, picspams, etc. Suggested guidelines for art are 500x500px (or equivalent of smaller pieces like banner + spacers, cover + icons, etc.) for traditional art, digital art, and manips around 3 - 5hrs; 2 minutes for vids; 10 songs + cover art for mixes; and 6 images for gif sets and picspams. We also ask that when you are in contact with the author, you work with them to see if there is anything specific they would like (i.e. a wallpaper, book cover, etc.). The art is your work, but having ideas doesn’t hurt!

At this time we will NOT be allowing AI Art. There are a lot of reasons for this. If you have questions please send a mod a message!

What are art claims? Artists sign-ups and art claims are the same thing; we use one form for both things, and that way the artists don’t sign up for an event they may not end up participating in. Writers will have submitted 2 short excerpts from their story for artists to read and get a feel for the work. It is based on a 'first come, first served’ and artists may choose up to three potential stories (in case their first choice is unavailable). If there are more stories than artists, there will be a second round of claims wherein artists may choose a second story to work with. And on until all stories are claimed for art.

If a fic up for claiming is rated explicit (R, NC-17, etc.), please only claim the story if you are over 18 years of age. Some authors may be uncomfortable working with underage artists on explicit works. We do not verify ages in any way for the bang, so this is solely on the honor system. Artists are encouraged to join the discord server and follow along with everyone a head of the artist claims being opened. We will be reposting the FAQs frequently and posting the links to sign ups closer to the open date! Keep an eye out here on the blog or join us over on discord! Things are a little quite atm but pick up closer to the event! Feel free to join even just as a spectator!

Delicate Times Chapters 1-3 Posted!

Wait... this isn't Chapter 39...

It's something else. Something worse? I hope not.

It's Delicate Times, a standalone prelude to my Dune fan-fiction Of Mind-Killers and Little Deaths. Within, a certain highborn Bene Gesserit initiate has to deal with culture shock and newfound social tensions when she leaves home for the first time for training in the way. (And the second half of the story is coming very soon.)

This fic is part of the Dune 2023 Mini-Bang event put on by @dunefandomevents, whereby I was partnered with the inimitable @cllooouuuu as my artist for the fic. She was a good sport at dealing with our time zone mismatch and was a great pleasure to work with.

“Cousin,” Feyd-Rautha greeted. Paul slid his gaze to the side, saddling him with an impatient glare. “Training chamber,” he ordered. His jaw tightened when Feyd didn’t immediately scamper inside. “Now.” Great. Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Baron of Arrakis and overseer of the spice harvest, turned on his heel and trailed after Paul, following orders like a trained beast. The thought stirred in him. He revered Paul to the point of his own undoing. What Paul commanded, Feyd would see through to the end. But the implication that he was shackled — collared — still soured his stomach on occasion. The moment Paul had skewered Vladamir, ownership was passed to him. Feyd became a belonging, a tool, an unwalked fateline. There was comfort in that. There was rage in it too. Paul unclipped his cloak and tossed it aside as he entered the training chamber. “Close the door.” Feyd did as he was told. The stone door slid shut behind him. “Muad’Dib — " “You slaughtered another Fedaykin.” “He was not loyal.” “Are you?” Feyd narrowed his eyes. The question was a knife to his sternum. “You’re brave today.” “Me?” Paul laughed. Cruelty laced the sound. “If you don’t adapt to the desert, it will take you from me,” he hissed, scrubbing a hand over his face. “Chani wanted to confront you herself — " “You should’ve let her.” “Oh, give her the opportunity to kill you? Sure.” “I assumed you wouldn’t allow it. I stand corrected.” “That’s the difference between you and Chani,” Paul said, exasperated. “I trust you wouldn’t kill the woman I love, but I can’t trust she wouldn’t kill you. You love me enough to spare me her death; Chani loves Dune enough to rob me of you if she thought it served our people.” Feyd turned the statement over in his mind. He tongued at the scar tissue on the inside of his cheek, leftover from years spent chewing at himself. “The Fedaykin spoke against you, Muad’Dib. I followed my instinct.” “The reason my Fedaykin speak out is because they don’t trust the leadership I’ve installed,” Paul said, unwrapping the headscarf and tossing it onto his pebbled cloak. “And I can’t blame them. You fight like a Harkonnen.” “I am a Harkonnen.” “As am I.” Paul unsheathed his crysknife and gestured to Feyd with it, glancing the tip down his body with a wave. “I learned the desert by becoming Fremen. You’ll learn the desert because I’ll teach you.” A laugh hiccupped in Feyd’s throat. “Paul — " “You will always be my gladiator, but I can show you how to earn their respect. You’re lethal. You’re ruthless and you fight with honor. I know that. Let me teach you how Fremen fight.” He paused, beckoning Feyd with a wave. “Let me show you the way.”

Okayyyy....So, I FINALLY got around to watching this "Don't Worry Darling" movie a few nights ago lol. Everyone kept saying how HORRIBLE the film was, and how bad Harry's acting was in it lol, so I'm sorry, but my curiosity just got the better of me and I HAD to watch it and see for myself. 😅

My Thoughts:

The Good:

I LOVE films that have a little bit of mystery like this...I love trying to figure out and guess what's really going on in a film, so this one was right up my alley.

Right off the bat, I kind of already suspected that what I was seeing was not what was real. I even questioned if they were really in that time period right off the bat. Like, something just seemed waaay too "perfect" about that little town. Immediately, I found myself thinking:

"This film reminds me of 'The Stepford Wives' and the 'Surrogates' movies". If any of you have seen either of those films, then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Can I just say? I love Florence as an actress. Everything I've seen her in so far has been great acting by her. She does an American accent fairly convincingly well too... I didn't pick up on any "slip-ups" like I usually do when most foreigners fake American accents for films lol. 😅 I can't wait to see her in "Dune: Part 2"!

Also...LOVED seeing Chris Pine as a villain in this! And can I just say?? He was ZADDY! LOL 🤣 Something about him in this film was doing things to me lol.

Oh...and I LOVE LOVE LOVED the costumes, and that house! I love styles and fashion from the 1950s and 1960s. Everyone just always looked so classy and put together. People really took pride in how they looked back then lol. I loved vintage styles honestly. 😊

That home was to die for too...loved the architecture.

The Bad:

Honestly, the main gripe I had with this film was that there were just SO many plot holes! 🥴 It was annoying! Like, the movie teases you and teases you, and you're hanging on along for the ride, and then.... It just.... LEAVES you HANGING with sooo many UNanswered questions at the end! 😤

What was up with the airplane crashing in the distance that Florence's character saw?? 🥴

What was up with the mini little earthquakes that everyone was just used to? Was it trains? Was it leakage from the "real life"?

Why did Olivia's character know what was up from the get-go? Who told her? How did she find out? Did she ALWAYS know?

Why does banging your head against the glass cause you to get out of the VR realm?

How did Harry's character get his wife to be able to undergo the VR life? Was he drugging her? Were ALL of these husbands drugging their wives? Were some of these dudes just choosing random women to be their VR wives?? Like, what on earth?

When did Chris Pine's wife know that he was a fraud?? Like, was she always suspecting? OR did that ONE phone convo that she over heard do something to her?

Who were the men in red jackets? Were they all under VR simulation as well?

Why does killing you in the VIRTUAL WORLD kill you in the REAL WORLD, when everything that's going on is just FAKE anyway?? 🥴 That was the BIGGEST mystery to me lol. Didn't make sense AT all.

You almost felt like you watched the entire movie for no good reason when none of these questions were answered lol. I can see why so many people didn't like this movie.

OVERALL:

Overall, I didn't HATE the movie. The movie actually started off very promising in fact! I actually didn't even mind Harry's acting? I mean, he's not really an "actor", so for a singer trying to act, I actually didn't think he did THAT bad y'all lol. 😄 And as Olivia's film debut (is this her first directorial film?) it actually wasn't THAT bad.

I just hated all of the plot holes!

I also felt like actress Kiki Layne was SEVERELY UNDERused in this movie. I would have liked to have seen how she was before she became suspicious. I was actually interested in her storyline as well, but they kind of treated her character as an afterthought.

Anyway...I think people overexaggerated though how much they hated this movie. It wasn't that bad honestly. It was just something fun to watch on a Friday night while eating my dinner lol.

But boy did this movie have plot holes galore! 🤣 It didn't have to end so abruptly either.

Too bad this movie had so much drama going on with the cast lol 😆 It didn't get such a great press tour due to all the drama going on lol. 👀

The Hostage

T rating, Paul x Chani, 10k

Paul releases the joystick to wipe blood from his forehead.

The knife at his throat is uncomfortably close, the cold metal bumping against his chin. From the backseat of the ornithoper, his captor grips his captor grips his shirt in one hand and keeps the blade positioned with the other.

“Faster,” she says.

Paul shakes his head, trying not to brush against the edge of the knife. “The winds are too high. If I increase velocity, the turbulence will compromise my–”

She yanks him against the headrest by his hair, hissing in his ear. “Faster.”

Paul's eyes sweep over indicators flashing red and orange. They're flying faster than he's ever flown before, the joysticks vibrating unhappily underneath his fingers. Knuckles bleaching white, Paul pulls the control sticks inwards, feeling the aircraft catch the lift. Outside the cabin, the ornithopter wings are beating so frantically that their angry buzzing can be heard above the noise of the engine. Blood trickles into his eye again, the congealing blood dissolving in a fresh layer of sweat. Paul can’t release the joysticks this time, even for a second, so he blinks the blood and sweat away, trying to see, wishing she would release his hair so he could angle his neck.

“Faster, Outworlder,” she says, exhilaration in her voice. “Faster.”
