Veronique Branquinho: F/W04 Twin Peaks Collection.

Graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1995, Veronique Branquinho is a fashion designer who often flies under the radar when compared to the attention other historic Antwerp designers such as Raf Simons and Martin Margiela receive. Since retired as a designer as of 2017, her aesthetic as a designer for both womenswear and menswear could be described as a blend of casual and formalwear with a specific focus on the contemporary styles of Europe in the late 90s/early 2000s. Known for her toned down color palette, and elegant tailoring, Veronique Branquinho was adored by many at the time who desired her reserved takes on both men's and womenswear basics.

Usually unassociated with being conceptual in her collections, for her Fall/Winter 2004 menswear show she defied this and recreated the world of David Lynch's experimental crime series, Twin Peaks. The show's presentation took place in a recreation of a setting synonymous with the show called "The Red Room". Models in the show were dressed in attire similar to the styles and aesthetics of the characters in Twin Peaks, the way the models were presented reflected specific scenes from the series. Sherpa jackets, plaid patterns and chunky sweaters referenced the clothes seen worn by the residents in the small logging town which the series takes place.

Veronique Branquinho, a designer who emerged the same time and from the same place as many of fashion's historic figures, is not one who should be overlooked when analyzing late 90s/early 2000's fashion. Veronique Branquinho not only provided runways with tasteful and alluring classic designs, she proved herself as a designer who was also capable of designing complete conceptual collections that conveyed a captivating story to an audience.

Being invited by Pitti Immagine was the perfect opportunity for Veronique Branquinho to do a first live presentation. Veronique Branquinho looks upon men’s fashion as a selection of indispensable evergreens worn by realistic man, rather than focusing on idols, muses or remote stars. Due to her subtle approach to menswear, Veronique has always been reluctant to do a classical catwalk setting, the Teatro Goldoni enables her to stage an alternative event which presents the collection to it’s full potential. The performance is not shown by professional models, but “real life” men. Together with choreographer Sam Louwyck, she created a scene, set in an alienating atmosphere, inspired by the “red room” from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, with its typical zig-zag floor and red curtains. For Autumn-Winter ’04-’05 she shows brown tuxedos, tuxedos refined by subtle detailing such as contrasting collars in burgundy or brown satin. Moreover she combines these details in perfect harmony with more casual garments: turtleneck jerseys worn under ceremonial shirts with pleated inserts, cumberbands, foulards, ceremonial trimmings on sweatersleeves. Furthermore she hints at the world of hunters and lumberjacks, using recognisable materials and designs: sharp cut coats in traditional loden with a boxpleat at the rear, waxed cotton trenchcoats, parkas finished with a fake fur trim at the hood and duffelcoats with red sheppard lining. Checks are predominantly present through the collection: the same red sheppard pattern reoccurs blown up and handknitted in shetland jumpers, in jackets with sheepskin lining and biaiscut details and in wide lumberjack shorts with similar biaiscut details and pleats at the rear. The concept is emphasized by layering the different checks and knotting both shirts and pullovers around the waist, pants are tucked into the boots.

C’est l’hivers. Le froid règne, il est tard et tombe la neige sans discontinuer. Cette Saint-Valentin s’amorce sous de mauvais hospices. Bruno quitte à l’instant son entreprise. Le ciel cotonneux cache les étoiles lointaines. Le vent glacé transperce ses os au travers de son duffelcoat. Bruno tremble plus que de coutume au moment où il actionne l’alarme de son établissement. 20 heures 30, il se trouve enfin au volant de son Scénic. Encore toute la route à faire pendant que le ciel déverse ses gros flocons.

Une pensée négative traverse le cerveau de cet homme d’affaire, de ce patron aussi solitaire que seul. « toujours tard, je rentre toujours tard. Putain, mais jamais je vais savoir faire autrement ». Il allume la radio afin de chasser de sa tête le déplorable constat émit sur lui-même. Il quitte enfin la ville en direction de sa douce campagne. Les routes étroites et mal éclairées ralentissent son retour jusqu’à Saint-Trivier. Son nez coule malgré le chauffage à fond dans l’habitacle. Il renifle et de temps à autre essuie du revers de la main.  Tant pis pour ce contre temps hivernal sur son trajet, lorsqu’il arrivera chez lui ; même seul ; il y trouvera un habitat douillet comme chaque jeudi.  Monique, la femme de ménage qu’il partage avec sa sœur Martine, s’occupe de sa grande maison. À la fin de sa journée de corvées, Monique a pour habitude de déposer le double des clés sous un pot de fleurs et la télécommande du portail emballée dans un sachet à la gauche de celui-ci.

En ce début de soirée maussade emmène Bruno dans quelques bribes de son passé. Une ex-épouse, Ghyslaine qui l'avait quitté depuis 4 ans pour un gendarme. Ses fils dont il a la garde. L’aîné qu’il a reconnu avant même de se marier à sa mère, et qui vit à Londres. Les deux autres en vacances, aux sports d'hiver à s'éclater. Sabine, cette jeune femme avec qui il aurait pu avoir une belle et longue histoire. Un fil conducteur qu'il n'avait pas su conserver lorsque les démons abaissants de son passé étaient revenus. Et cette foutue neige qui ne s'arrête pas !

« j’ai beau être un bon samaritain à faire bosser tout l’monde, à assumer les garçons. Mais putain ch’suis tout seul. Juste seul avec mon fric, ma baraque et mes chiens ! J’bosse toute la journée comme un forcené mais pour qui, pourquoi ? ch’suis vraiment un abruti ! »

Mais il arrive enfin devant son portail. Ce qui clôt toute la négativité qui encombrait l'habitacle de son véhicule. Il stoppe la voiture face à l’immense double porte qui ceint la bâtisse bressane. Moteur toujours en marche, il sort et va récupérer les clés et la télécommande. Il retourne au poste de conduite et appuie sur le bouton ouverture. Les deux chiens accueillent véhicule et bonhomme dans une liesse sans commune mesure. Maya, la chienne, se sauve comme à chaque fois que le portail s'ouvre. Bruno stationne son carrosse au milieu de la cour face à la piscine bâchée. Il s’empresse de rappeler Maya à l'ordre. La chienne docile, qui aime juste sentir les odeurs qui émanent du ru situé en face de la maison, revient vers lui sans se faire prier. Il ferme le grand portail. Il administre une caresse aux deux animaux et souffle un bon coup. La neige a cessé son manège. Un beau tapis recouvre l'ensemble de la propriété. les chiens adorent ce temps, et montrent leur désir du jeu. Bruno les repousse gentiment et se dirige vers l'entrée de son domaine de vie. Il introduit la clé, et après deux tours la porte s'ouvre. Il tient un sac empli de victuailles de sa main gauche. Il retire les clés de la serrure et pousse légèrement la porte du pied droit. Les chiens lui tournent autour juste au moment où ils s'apprêtent à entrer. Bruno agacé les rabroues. De la main droite il actionne l'interrupteur lumineux.
