Nobody understands why you fight with him. It’s supposed to be a secret between the pair of you. I believe it’s a secret of your very own. I believe you feed your spite on him with no more sense than a blood-sucking louse.

the one thing that’s weird about the specs so far is that duellist could not more clearly be assassin with a bonus necrotic damage theme. and it would be maybe a normal alternate name for it if duellist wasn’t an established other thing in these games. obviously veilguard is trying to do its own fresh thing with the specs but then why would you say duellist and lead people to believe it’s duellist like just think of a third name

I just watched The Duellists (1977) and couldn't hold my tears at this scene:
Tumblr media
The comparison between him and the man he was so devoted to is all the more evident: similarly to how Napoléon is often depicted during his last exile, Feraud is staring alone and defeated at the verdant fields of a region unknown to him - neither the movie nor the books mention him ever having travelled to Provence.
This is probably one of the greatest homage that Feraud would have received had he truly existed the way both Conrad and Ridley Scott portrayed him.

Ridley Scott: I made a film about two rival officers constantly duelling throughout and in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, and now I've actually done a film about Napoleon!
Me: Great! Could you also do a film about Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, a vital innovator in European battlefield surgery and triage, often considered the first military surgeon; who pioneered the ambulance volantes ("Flying ambulances") to quickly transport wounded men from the battlefield, effectively creating a forerunner of the modern MASH units; co-led the team that performed one of the first accurately recorded pre-anaesthetic mastectomies in Western medicine; was spotted helping wounded men while under heavy fire during the Battle of Waterloo by the Duke of Wellington who purposefully ordered for his soldiers not to fire in Larrey's direction; and when captured by the Prussians after the battle was about to be executed on the spot when he was recognised by one of the German surgeons, who pled for his life because he had saved the life of Field Marshall Blücher's son some years earlier?
Ridley Scott:
Ridley Scott: Um.
Me: Yeah. Didn't think so.

69, 63, 60, 39, 30, 14, 16, 11, 7, aaaand 5 for every single one of your guys. have fun <3
Oh good lord ok here we go.
5: What is your relationship status?
The Lieutenant practically lights up- a feat, for someone who is currently bereft of vaer soul. Whatever emotions vae felt were strong enough to bypass around the lack of it, teetering rather dangerously into feral glee. "I am no longer single. Officially. I have my beloved Scoundrel, and my precious kitten, and my- my- whatever the Silverer and I have, I think. All mine. And theirs. And mine!"
Vae was... going to carry on like this for a while.
-
"... I have a sword?" The Duellist shrugged.
-
The Charmer's smile faded, and she looked at the direction of the docks. "I... had had an agreement with someone from the city, years ago, when I left home. She... decided the zee was a better choice for her."
She's silent, but shakes her head, smile returning. "All of that is to say that I am perfectly single, of course. For however long that lasts- the city holds many wonders and many people. I'm... open to new possibilities."
She turns her back on the docks, and doesn't look at them again.
-
The Hunter's ears flick. "I'm... more or less safely partnered. My partner is an angel, you know- her partner is kind of an angel too, if more pathetic. My kitten too, I guess."
They snicker lightly. "My kid is a horrid little abomination of me and her mom. Thats why her name is Mina. Oh, she's such a good little hunter though, and hopefully she'll STAY a good hunter, if Serosha remembers to let her practice. I fully expect her skills to have improved when I return. Hopefully."
---
7: What did you last eat?
"Um- coffee, I think." The Lieutenant confesses. "Wait, wait, no, it was coffee AND some toast. With some sort of spread on it. I cannot remember I just know I did eat. Oh, and some cake, with the Silverer."
-
"Lunch? It was soup. The mushrooms are nice but I think I'm getting tired of mushrooms all the time." The Duellist made a face. "Is there... any normal food down here? No? Well shit."
-
"It was this wonderful biscuit," the Charmer sighs yearningly. "Oh it was so good, the best thing I'd ever eaten, which... isn't a very high bar since I was... you know..."
She gestures lightly and says nothing more.
-
"The Scoundrel," The Hunter grinned.
---
11: Do you like someone?
Once again the Lieutenant lights up in a way that should not be normal. "Yes, of course! My beloved Scoundrel, my beloved Scientist, my darling Silverer, even the cute little Lordling I've taken under my wing. Oh they're all so wonderful, I adore them..."
-
"... I? Have a sword?" The Duellist shrugged again, brow furrowed. "I mean... theres the boy back home, I guess. I'm not here to like anyone. I don't think I will like anyone here."
-
The Charmer's smile turns a bit playful. "I'm simply... keeping my options open for now. I have some business to attend to first, a contract I need to pay off, but hey... if something happens, something happens, right?"
-
"Serosha, back home. The kitten I chase around. My king- though I have not told him, and probably never will because that would be awkward, in my opinion. I'm just a marquis! Besides, I have Serosha and Mina," the Hunter shrugs, ears flicking again. "And again, I do chase around Rigel ever so often. He makes it so *easy*-"
---
14: Do you miss someone?
The Lieutenant grimaces in the direction of some rustling in vaer house, some... unwanted guest that vae is trying so hard to tolerate. "I do.
"But my aim is getting better."
-
The Duellist's face darkened. "I do."
-
The Charmer fiddled with a ring on a necklace. "Too many to count. You know, on Arbor, I was one of the most devoted followers. My priestess was... she was the only one who had cared about what I had gone through, the only person who was trying to put an end to it. She was like a mother to me. I miss her the most, I think."
-
"I miss my court." The Hunter didn't hesitate. "I miss my partner, my daughter. I miss hunting for the court, bringing back the food to feed them, going home to teach my daughter to do the same. I miss my partner's singing- gods I miss the singing. Theres not a single damned thing down here that can match it. I even miss my partner's dumb partner! Its stupid!"
Their tail lashed, and they... not so subtly turned away to wipe their eyes. "Its fine. I'll be home soon."
---
16: How exactly are you feeling in this moment?
The Lieutenant blinks. "I feel... fine, I suppose. Cold. Just cold."
Hm. Vae should get that contract framed, maybe. Keep it safe. Just in case.
-
"Tired, I guess," the Duellist shrugs. "I came here for a job, and I don't like waiting. The darkness gets to you here. No wonder everyone is batshit."
-
"Free."
-
"I feel like I always do. Distant. Hungry. Unbearibly bored," the Hunter sighed. They wouldn't say it, but one could see it when they looked up at the false stars. They felt lonely, too.
---
30: What's irritating you right now?
The Lieutenant's mouth twists as a crash sounds in the other room.
"Absolutely nothing," vae said primly. Or, as primly one could through gritten teeth. "Its always delightful having my ex leeching off of my hospitality. Very fine."
-
"The lack of decent food-" the Duellist groaned. "I haven't had a decent meal since I landed myself in New Newgate. Now *that* is criminal, I say."
-
"The mirrors," the Charmer frowned, brow furrowed. "It's all... fine. I just don't like mirrors. Its a personal thing."
-
"I agree with that Duellist guy. Nobody even dies here and still I am not allowed to hunt my own food," the Hunter huffed, nose scrunching up. "It really is criminal."
---
39: How old were you when you had your first kiss?
The Lieutenant giggles, looking fond. "Oh, sixteen... goodness I was so young back then. My friend and I had snuck out to the gardens to avoid some dreadful lesson or something of the sort, and, well. We were both silly and curious."
The Lieutenant shrugged. "The Fall was a few years later. I never saw her again."
-
The Duellist went pink, floundering fir a bit before he asked, "What kind if question is that? Who even remembers something like that?"
-
The Charmer started, then had to pause and thing really hard for a moment. "... do kisses in dreams count? No? Oh... then... I've never had a first kiss. Or... any kiss, I suppose."
-
"Oh, I was very young, maybe 93, I think? Fully grown, sure, but still *young*, you know?" The Hunter shrugged. "Doesn't matter the kiss was only done as a prank anyway."
---
60: Do you want to get married?
The Lieutenant sighed wistfully. "I do, I want to get married so badly. The wedding, and my partner... or partners, I am willing to share in this case I suppose. I want it to be perfect. I want it to be happy and joyous and forever and ever and ever and ever and-"
Vae were, once again, going to go on for a while.
-
The Duellist shrugged. "I haven't really thought about it honestly. Maybe one day, if I meed the right guy. Or girl. Or... neither or both? I don't know."
-
"I wanted to one day, but now..." the Charmer trailed off, biting her lip. "I've... never done something for myself before. I'd like to try that first."
-
"..." the Hunter squinted for a moment, deep in thought. "Does marriage usually come before or after having a kid? Because if its before, then, I guess I'm already married I guess. I dunno, we have a kid together what more do you WANT-"
---
63: Would you change your name?
The Lieutenant snorted lightly. "I already have. Do you like it?"
-
"Maybe, if I had to. Kieran's a nice name, my mum picked it out for me. Named after my da," The Duellist gave a small smile. "Allegedly, at least. He died before I was born, and ma picked out all my other siblings' named from a catalogue, so its fifty-fifty, I think."
-
The Charmer starts, then pauses, then starts again. "I... guess I have? I picked Alice. My... the person I had an arrangement with had picked Ronnie, for me."
She shrugs weakly. "I don't know if I had a name before that, sorry."
-
"Nah," The Hunter shrugged. "Thats dumb, why would I do that?"
---
69: Do you believe in soulmates?
"Yes-" the Lieutenant got the feverishly obsessed look in vaer eyes again. "Yes, I do, and I have found mine and I am never gonna let them go, never ever ever ever ever-"
Vae're going to be awhile. Again.
-
"Well, it is nice to think about, someone else being out there," the Duellist sighed. "I know its probably not true. But hey, if there is some red string binding me to someine else? I hope I can find out where that leads, when all this is over."
-
"I used to," the Charmer gave a weak smile. "Not... not anymore. Not romantically, at least, and thats... thats okay, I think."
-
"Ha!" The Hunter was already laughing, taking a moment to calm down. "I mean I love my partner, but I don't think she's my soulmate. I'm just lucky she didn't kill me when we met, and if I hadn't been alone at the time I honestly would have tried to kill her. Its a miracle that things worked out the way they did... but I am glad they did."
