Happy 78th birthday to King Carl XVI Gustaf!

Born on April 30th 1946, Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus acceded to the throne of Sweden upon the death of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, on 15 September 1973.

Carl XVI Gustaf became Sweden's crown prince and heir apparent to the throne at the age of four following his great-grandfather's death. Carl Gustaf's father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash in 1947 when Carl Gustaf was only nine month old. He is the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history, having surpassed King Magnus IV's reign of 44 years and 222 days on 26 April 2018.

He married Silvia Sommerlath on 19 June 1976 and they have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Duchess of Vastergotland, Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Varmland and Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.

“Yesterday, the Crown Princess attended the World Nature Foundation WWF's annual meeting. The annual meeting was held at Ekolsund Castle with a subsequent excursion to Hjälstaviken, a bird lake surrounded by reeds and beach meadows with grazing animals.

After the annual meeting, an excursion was arranged to the nature reserve Hjälstaviken, one of Sweden's bird lakes. Since the 1970s, WWF has been engaged in wetlands and has financed, among other things, savings in Hjälstaviken.

Almost a quarter of Sweden's wetlands have disappeared in the last century, but the interest in preserving, restoring and renovating wetlands is increasing.”

“Today, the Crown Princess attended the annual gathering of the Nordic Museum and Skansen's Friends.

The Crown Princess was welcomed to the Skåne mine at Kungl. The animal farm of chairman Hans Malmsten, boarder Sanne Houby-Nielsen, Skansen manager John Brattmyhr and the friends association's operating manager Clara Block-Hane.

The Friends Association was formed in 1918 and the purpose is to support, promote and spread awareness of the operations of both institutions. The Crown Princess is a member and the first honorary member of the friends association since 1997.”

“Today, the Crown Princess gave preference at Kungl. The castle for Andrew Parsons, chairman of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The meeting was also attended by Chairman of the Swedish Parasport Association and the Swedish Paralympic Committee Åsa Llinares Norlin, and Secretary-General of Parasport Sweden and the Swedish Paralypmic Committee Bo Sköld.

During the promotion, the Crown Princess received, among other things, information about the Special Olympic World Summer Games 2023 and the Paralympics 2024.

The Crown Princess is an honorary member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).”

“Prince Daniel inaugurated today the fourth permanent artwork to the Princess Estelle sculpture park at Kungl. The animal farm in Stockholm. This year's work, Untold, is created by artist Charlotte Gyllenhammar.

Prince Daniel, who is an initiator and member of the board, inaugurated the new sculpture in the presence of the Crown Princess, Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand as well as the public and invited guests.”
