The Duchess of Teck's Pearl and Diamond Brooch
When Queen Mary’s brother Prince Frank died in 1910, they had just repaired a decade long rift, during which he altered his will to reflect his feelings towards his sister.
James Pope-Hennessy said around this time (when his sister has just recently become Princess of Wales) Prince Frank was alienated from her due to her disapproval of his mistress Nellie, Countess of Kilmorey as well as her attempts to help him “with money and good advice.” He says Frank found, “the burden of gratitude too heavy to bear.”
Frank’s will states, “The jewel given me by my godfather Francis Joseph Emperor of Austria I leave to Eleanor Constance, Countess of Kilmorey with the caveat that she will leave it to H.R.H. The Princess Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland daughter of His Majesty King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.”
Queen Mary was horrified by the contents of the will and in 1910 paid the Countess £10,000 for the Cambridge emeralds to be returned to her. But this jewel was not included in that purchase. The Countess died in 1920 and the brooch presumably went to Princess Victoria. The brooch was later either given to or left to Queen Mary by Princess Victoria (who died in 1935) and was later photographed in her photographic jewel inventory. She left it to Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The brooch has now presumably been left to King Charles.

"The day after their arrival at York Cottage there was a very bad thunderstorm. Princess May had always been allergic to thunder, which frightened her and made her feel ill. The succeeding days were at once warm and rainy. Often they could not go outside the cottage, but remained cooped up in the tiny rooms. Neither of them was much given to self-expression. Long though they had known each other, it took some time for their mutual shyness to evaporate. He now found himself, alone in a small cottage in the rain, with a highly sensitive and cultivated girl who did not care for naval manners and was far too intelligent and honest to indulge in flattery or pretend that she agreed with him when she, quite frequently, did not. Prince George felt at a loss, and sometimes he reacted like a spoiled child. It is to Princess May's singular credit that, under these conditions, and in the first weeks of their marriage, her husband fell deeply in love with her."

among her daughters-in-law alice duchess of gloucester, queen mother aka duchess of york, princess marina duchess of kent.
with whom she had the best relationship?
i know she disliked simposon duchess of windsor
Hi @abigaaal !
You are certainly correct! I think we can all agree without a shred of doubt that QM did NOT like Wallis Simpson!
As for the rest of her daughters-in-law I do believe she liked and got on well with all of them. I know Elizabeth and Alice referred to QM as ‘darling Mama’ though I have not seen Marinas letters, and I think referring to your mother-in-law as ‘mama’ in such high society circles was fairly common. I know Princess Mary also referred to her own M-I-L in such fashion, as did QM with Queen Alexandra.
From what I have read, my opinion is that Alice of Gloucester was her favourite, followed by Elizabeth then Marina - however I think the margin between all of them was very small. She had things in common with all them though I think she found Alice the most down-to-earth.
She had certainly known Elizabeth the longest as she married Bertie in 1923, and Alice and Marina didn’t appear on the scene until the early to mid 1930s respectively. Elizabeth as I understand it was the undisputed favourite of George V, though this may be because he died so early into the marriages of his two younger sons. Though in the days Bertie was proposing to Elizabeth (3 times!! so yes I do mean days - if not months and years) QM as I understand was very very keen for Elizabeth to say yes as she thought she’d be a fantastic match for Bertie. And much later on she knew undoubtedly that Elizabeth would be a wonderful Queen.
We know Alice and QM were close only I think because of the memoir written by Alice (which is FABULOUS btw - if you haven’t read it I would absolutely recommend it). Marina however doesn’t have the luxury of being as well written about unlike her sisters-in-law, with one being a Queen of England and the other as I’ve mentioned writing her own story, though by all means Alice was still discreet. So when it comes to Marina I’m afraid we know a little less about her relationship with QM. I also have to confess I’m not much of an expert when it comes to Marina, if anyone else has any light to shed on it please do comment!
Ultimately, I think she liked each D-I-L for who they were and how happy they made her sons (and of course they were of the appropriate marrying variety unlike Simpson).
Hope this helps! ♥️

The Duchess of Teck’s Collet Necklace.
It is likely that this necklace (or the greater part of the stones now in it) came to Princess Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck, from her aunt, Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester.
A year later, on the Duchess of Gloucester’s death, the Princess also received from her aunt her ‘single row of diamonds’, in addition to other jewellery. A later inventory of Princess Mary Adelaide’s jewellery records the legacy from the Duchess of Gloucester as ‘A Diamond Necklace of 49 Diamonds, and clasp of small Diamonds’, which is probably to be identified with this necklace.
The necklace was bequeathed by Queen Mary to Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

Hi Juli! A three-word prompt for Eva’s birthday party: It’s witchful thinking
I think “it’s” may count as two words, not one😅 but I found this expression somewhere and it made me giggle, and I thought it would suit Eva!
omg i love it 🖤 thanks for the request Reb
witch-ful thinking
There was no such thing as impossible for this woman.
There were, but it is easy to forget Eva’s magic has limits when she can do shit like engineer a situation where she can befriend Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and ensure Section D will never bother them again.
How could they when Eva has joined the circle of the future Queen Consort of England, and their children are now playmates to the future Queen Elizabeth II? Hard to get rid of the person who has the House of Windsor eating out of her hand, wouldn’t it?
They aren’t monarchists, Eva could easily slice their throats as easily as she can kiss the princess’ cheek. They do not believe in the English Empire having a right to own the world and keep everyone under their boot, but what does that matter when they are the thing removing the sword hanging over your head?
But for that to be complete, they needed King George the Fifth and Queen Mary of Teck.
And how do you hope to achieve that? Wishful thinking?” Tommy asks having no clue how she’d go from the new friend to the Duchess of York to the woman who handles the Queen’s investments.
“It’s witch-ful thinking, mi vida, very different from what you said. Just watch” the witch dismissed his doubts with a daring smile.
