Grand Duchesses at the Coronation of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna
Nicholas II and his consort Empress Alexandra, were crowned on Tuesday, 14 May (O.S., 26 May N.S.) 1896, in Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. The magnificence of the occasion was never again seen in Russia. The Grand Duchesses were in full regalia. Here are two great photographs of them.

Above:
Sitting: Grand Duchess Alexandra Iosifovna (who had been present at the coronation of Alexander III); sitting on the floor at her knees is Princess Olga of Wurttenberg; sitting next to Alexandra Iosifovna is Princess Louise Margaret, Duchess of Connaught
Back Row Standing from Let to Right: Grand Duchess Vera Konstantinovna, Grand Duchess Anastasia of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (the elder), Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mavrikievna, and Princess Elena of Saxe-Altenburg

Above:
In the center of this group, is Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, (daughter of Tzar Alexander II, wife of Queen Victoria's second son Alfred, Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, who is standing behind her.)
On the right side of Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, is her daughter Victoria Melita, Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Sitting to the left of her mother is the Crowned Princess of Romania, Marie (same name as her mother; known by the family as Missy). Her husband the Crowned Prince of Romania, Ferdinand, is standing slightly to the side, behind Missy.
Next to Ferdinand of Romania is Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and By Rhine, husband of Victoria Melita at the time and brother of the Empress being crowned, Alexandra Feodorovna. To the right of Victoria Melita is her brother, Prince Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who died at age twenty-four.

“I could not choose for a sister-in-law anyone I like better than Louise. She will make Arthur a most delightful wife. Each is the complement of the other, and I foresee that each will make the other supremely happy.”
—the German Crown Princess, (nee Victoria, Princess Royal) on the fiancée of her younger brother Prince Arthur: Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia.

“Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh and Duchess Louise Margaret of Connaught have some similarities; both married princes who were far from inheriting the crown and arrived unpretentiously. However, their efforts and dedication to the British monarchy were exceptional, and they stood out for winning not only the respect of their husbands, but also the affection of their illustrious mothers-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria.” - Text & Image Submitted by cenacevedo15

Who is your fav royal from the victorian period?
Hello anon! Thank you for the wonderful question!
This is so hard to answer because most of my favorite royals come from the Victorian era. Like for example I could say that OTMA is because they (not Anastasia) were born in the Victorian Era but they were in their “prime” in the 1910s so would not count in my standards. The same thing would be the same for Princess Elisabeth of Hesse who was alive for most of her life in the Victorian Era but died in 1903 so I would say that she would be right above the line. Some people might think this is a bit of a stretch and you would be right because I’m trying to eliminate as many of my favs as I can to make it a not insane amount of people haha 😅
I would have to say my absolute favorites would be Princesses Victoria, Alice, Louise, and Beatrice (4/5 of Queen Victoria’s daughters, sorry Helena I still love you), Princess Charlotte of Prussia (Queen Victoria’s eldest granddaughter), Grand Duke Ernst Louis of Hesse and By Rhine, Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, and Queen Olga of Greece and her daughter Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna of Russia
People who come in a close second: Queen Alexandra, Princess Margaret of Connaught (later Crown Princess of Sweden), Princess Alix of Hesse (later Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia), Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe Coburg and Gotha (later Grand Duchess Viktoria Feodorovna of Russia), Grand Duchess Vera Konstantinovna of Russia, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, Princess Sophie Charlotte in Bavaria, and Princess Viktoria of Prussia
Bonus people: Princess Anna of Hesse and By Rhine, Prince Friedrich “Frittie” of Hesse and By Rhine, Princess Marie of Hesse and By Rhine, Prince Siggismund of Prussia
These are my main favorites that I can think of but I will edit this post if I forget anyone! Thank you for asking!

Photograph of Princess Louise Margaret, Duchess of Connaught dressed as Queen Louise of Prussia; photographed in a studio.
Queen Louise was the Duchess’ great-grandmother, and she appears to be copying one of several similar portraits of her, such as this one.

Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, Duchess of Connaught and Strathearn, 1879.
This painting is a copy painted by Robert A. Müller for Queen Victoria of an original portrait by Von Angeli, dated 1879, at Bagshot Park. When the Duke of Connaught saw the original portrait in November 1878 he wrote to the Queen to describe it: ‘It is really lovely, so like & yet so pretty & natural – She is taken three quarters face in a low gown of a creamy colour, her hair quite plain, my locket round her neck on a thin gold chain, & that ruby & diamond star left her by her Grandmama in her dress… I tell you the particulars as I think they may interest you.’ (x)
