MARVH MADNESS MARATHON March 3: Cowboy Bebop (obviously) Chances are when you were a kid, you had that show that you’d watch that clearly you shouldn’t be watching. For a lot of people that show was The Simpsons or Family Guy or South Park. If you’re an anime fan, then chances are you’ve also had that anime that makes you feel like your crossing a threshold. Where you’re not watching a story about a bunch of ragtag kids in a digital world, but your watching a show about teenagers on the verge of adulthood or adults with pasts too complex for you at age 12 or 13 to comprehend because you’ve barely lived yourself. Cowboy Bebop was that anime for me. When me and my brother would buy two episode vhs’ for $20 at the flea market, we knew that this show was a different beast from anything we’d ever seen before. It was adult, but not in a crude way, but in a classy way. It wasn’t based on a manga, so it was able to breathe and just be what it was. It was cool, it was art and it spawned dozens of pretenders, but nothing really compared. Because there’s nothing quite like Bebop. So, here’s to my first mature anime! Today belongs to you. Also, the soundtrack is perfect.
