These are two images that I took and edited myself over the summer. I find sunsets beautiful and often take pictures of them. I’ve shown the original photos and the final products (which are not labelled) to show the changes I made.
With the editing, I didn’t change much, especially in the second photo. I added shadows where I felt they needed to be added and brightened certain areas. I added a “fade” filter to both images, which I feel brings the image together effectively. It also ensures the transition between each hue in the sky is seamless, and enhances certain colours.

This is our colour group for Manitou, the photographer has taken multiple elements in to case to fit the role of being advertising. There is a clean pristine, blue lake in the background and a harmonized fraternity in the foreground. this is a definite good advert as it showcases the highlights of the camp, and seems to communicate a story in an instant.

This is a piece of art made by Banksy, anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s. He often makes graffiti, executed in a distinctive stenciling technique.
This piece of art depicts a man who appears to be homeless. He has a cup and sign which are symbols synonymous with homeless people. On his sign it says keep your coins, I want change. This is a strong statement because it is rejecting literal coins, or "change" and instead requesting change. The change is not specified but it can be assumed that the change is referring to change within society that would help homeless people more than the change hey receive.
This piece of art is made with spraypaint and the canvas is a brick wall that is painted red. I like the contrast and use of black and white on a red wall. I also like the meaning behind the painting.

Hannah Doerksen’s art captivates me in an odd emotional way. The sense of eeriness in her art.  “A lot of them are about feeling stuck,” said Hannah Doerksen. Her art is something everyone can eventually relate to. The sense of loneliness and isolation at times. It overall also has some type of calming chill vibe to the art. Not only do I love how the art generally captivates me, but I also love the amount of preparation done into these photos. The work of laying specific objects and props in certain positions, taking photos in specific places such as  Funeral homes, hotel lobbies, waiting rooms and deserted shopping malls just shows the amount of thought into these projects.

These watercolour paintings were created by Frank Webb, an artist and teacher born in 1927 who’ still holds workshops that wow audiences. What immediately pops out to me when looking at these paintings are the shapes he used. That is one of the most important elements of a painting, according to Webb. “Good shapes must be created. They can’t be copied,” he says.
Another element that draws the viewer into these images is his luminous colour sense. This is something that I’ve mentioned several times in all of my posts, however I cannot emphasis enough the importance of a good colour scheme.
All of his paintings display that he not only knows how to use colour and shape, but he also has a firm grasp on concepts of design and architecture. He found the best way to approach painting by applying solid design principles and enhanced compositional techniques before painting. He believed that seeing what the subject really is, feeling the essence of form and shape, and responding to it in a dynamic proactive way leads to more self-expression and effective execution of the work.
I like his paintings because they are a satisfying middle ground between realism and abstract. They accurately portray the scene, but there is a  more creative, playful, colourful, flamboyant twist to each painting, authentic to the artist.

In class, we have been discussing two main categories of artwork - traditional media and emerging technologies. I have highlighted which media I like most from each and added a few examples above.
I really like paintings, especially ones created using oil paints, acrylics, or water colour. One of my favourite artists is Vincent van Gogh, and I have included his famous Starry Night above. This isn’t visible in a photo of the painting, but I find the technique fascinating that van Gogh uses in this painting and many others: he applies a very thick layer of oil paint, in which you can see his brushstrokes. This adds a unique texture to his work.
I used to love to sketch, and still occasionally do when I have the time. I also like looking at old sketches, such as Leonardo DaVinci’s horse studies. Sketches allow artists to practice many different techniques, such as realism and shading. Graphite, charcoal, and other grey-scale sketch mediums show that artists don’t always have to have colour to create an effective work.
As for newer art mediums, I find 3D printing fascinating. The particular work shown above was made by Kate Blacklock, using 3D-printed clay. I analyze it further in a different post.
Finally, probably my favourite art medium is music videos. I find myself watching them and listening to the music almost every day. Music videos allow song-writers to give their music a visual and a deeper meaning. They are entertaining and captivating. The one shown above is the song “This is Gospel” by Panic! at the Disco, an artist I have been listening to a lot recently. Other artists I enjoy are Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith.

These vases were created by Kate Blacklock, a ceramicist exploring the potential of 3D-printed clay. She uses this emerging technology to create vertebra-like forms. 3D printer are printers the either extrude or laser-fuse materials, such as plastic, metal, or in this case ceramic, to create 3D objects. 3D Printing has been changing the face of design with makers adopting at a rapid pace, and artists using 3D Printing as a part of the art-making process are also on the rise.
These sculptures, all part of Blacklock’s 3D Printed Ceramics collection, began their life as drawings on Adobe Illustrator, and then were produced using a powder and binder Systems CeraJet printer. Blacklock says, "One thing that surprised me was how much the actual pieces looked like the renderings. It’s different when you make things out of clay and you fire them and there are often surprises with the clay doing things that you don’t expect.”
I find 3D printed sculptures fascinating and exciting, because with this new technology, the creativity of artists is expanding. These machines can achieve more detail then hand-sculpting, and as Blacklock mentioned, the final product is almost exactly like the virtual design. 3D printing can test the limits of artists and art.
I really like these sculptures because they are unique, and decorative. I have never seen anything like them before, and that is exactly the type of art I like. Each piece is unique, and the closer you look the more detail you can see. I admire the artist, because it must have taken her a long time to design each original piece. They all turned out beautiful.

At first glance, these images immediately made me think of our global plastic pollution crisis and about the several serious environmental issues in today’s society. These images are simple, yet what they portray is perfectly clear: we are killing our planet.
Taken by Wolf Silveri, an Austrian photographer and author, the medium used for these images is photography. They are part of his “Earth” project. All of Silveri’s work is created to share a message, and as mentioned, these images effectively do so, because of the medium and colours used. Photography was an appropriate medium because it shows real images, highlighting the fact that the crisis we are going through is very real: we’ve all seen horrifying images of the impacts of plastic on the environment. The billions upon billions of items of plastic waste choking our planet is terrifying - this is represented by the image of the Earth being suffocated in the plastic bag. This series of images is a perfect example of how artists can use photography to send a massage to the world.
The colours used in these photos are blues, whites and orange-browns. These colours would usually be lovely together, however given the context and the message these images are portraying, it gives an eerie mood to the pieces. The shadows, especially in the first image make it appear more dramatic and emphasis the discomfort the photograph shows.

This piece is called “False World” and was made using collage, vinyl, wire, and plaster by Calgary-based visual artist Hannah Doerkson. It is part of her “things” series, consisting of a dozen more similar plants. The idea of these pieces is to mimic fake plants, something she never understood. “Fake plants strike me as absurd,” she writes. “They are a product designed for people who lack the commitment to care for real plants, but who also want their spaces to be decorated by that which appears to be living.” She took this idea to the next level, by personifying the plants in a way, and exploring the perspective of the sculptures themselves. They are fake plants, pretending to be real, and as she says, are “struggling with their identity.”
I really like this sculpture because at first glance, it looks like quite a pretty plant, with the shiny, reflective leaves drawing you in. However, after you find out more about the “perspective” of the sculpture and the meaning behind it, it really makes you think.

This piece to me is inspirational to show the world dripping away as a number graph increases, this could be temperature, population, or stocks, either way the world is getting into a dramatically raised of extremes. With numbers being a substitute to sanctity.

This is a piece of art by Skylaar Amann, an illustrator specializing in graphic design. This art seems to be made using some sort of digital application, such as Adobe Illustrator, or  Autodesk Sketchbook. However, it also looks like an oil painting. She uses lots of blues, whites, oranges, and greens because she draws things related to the ocean a lot. This work of art is meant to inform people of plastic pollution in the ocean using mermaids which most people think of as a positive thing and she uses that to create a discussion of what is happening. I like the meaning behind the piece of art and I like the creativity in the work and detail on each piece of trash and how it has just enough detail that you can tell what each piece of trash is.

Part of this assignment is to think about what my “aesthetic” is and what is visually appealing to me. As I mentioned in my handwritten note above, I think my aesthetic is images and art that are neat, not to busy, colourful, and sometimes though-provoking. I have also included a few examples of images I would be drawn to, however I did not create any of them. What I like about these particular images is that the colours are pleasant, charming, warm, and compliment each other nicely. Some colours contrast, such as the blue sky and orange clouds in the bottom right picture, but not in a harsh way, rather in a way that makes the clouds stand out and brings out the sunset.

This is picture I took on Mount Tremblant in Quebec, Canada in October of 2018 on my Samsung Galaxy S8.

I liked the colours of the building and the effect the light has. The sky was also very blank and I liked this picture a lot.
This follows my aesthetic of urban photography.

This is a picture one of my colourmates made of a few of us in the colour. It is a mix of Photoshop and photography.
I like how some of us blend in really well. For example, me leaning on one person's shoulder really blended in well and it adds to the picture a lot.

This is a picture I took of an injured bee I found while eating at home in my gazebo. I brought my little friend a leaf in exchange for a picture. I then snapped a quick pick of Barry B Benson with my Samsung Galaxy S8.
The picture is more of a meme than a picture I would post on my photography account. I posted this on my meme account with the caption "Ya like jazz".
This bee reminded me of the movie "Bee Movie" because at the time that was the meme of the month. This picture also made me think about the bee population epidemic because of the injured bee who would inevitably die. I don't know how the bee was injured but it makes me think of the other bees that we do know how they are dying.
