'...After graduating from RADA, Waller-Bridge watched her fellow alumni rise up the theater and film ranks while she scrambled to get work. She made her proper stage debut in the 2009 play Roaring Trade, where she sparred with Fleabag’s future Hot Priest, Andrew Scott. “I remember her being immediately charismatic and extremely comedically gifted—just a really courageous sort of person,” Scott says, his voice full of affection. “I remember her talking about these ideas of the way theater should be, and it was really obvious to me that she wasn’t just going to be satisfied with just being an actor, you know?”
The solution was DryWrite, a fringe theater company she had founded in 2007 with her friend Vicky Jones, who would go on to direct the stage version of Fleabag. “Vicky really lit that flame again,” Waller-Bridge says. “I just felt like I could make her laugh—she really reveled in the naughtier, more mischievous, less put-together perfect presentation of a person. We used to really, really love mucking around with that in our theater company.” Scott describes “incredibly fun, raucous evenings” at DryWrite where Waller-Bridge and company experimented with outrage, humor, and vulnerability.
A few of the characters that she developed onstage ended up being corralled for her first television series, Crashing, about six young friends living in a London squat. The flirtatious, foul-mouthed, and grief-soaked character that became Fleabag also emerged in those years. Transformed into a one-woman play, it won awards at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which triggered a cascade of opportunities: a supporting role in the series Broadchurch alongside Olivia Colman and the chance to create Crashing, Fleabag, and Killing Eve.
All three of those shows prickle with sexual electricity—particularly Fleabag, which opens with Waller-Bridge’s character having anal sex. (Her partner is thrilled that she can accommodate his plentitude, which causes her to confess to the camera, “You spend the rest of the day wondering: Do I have a massive asshole?”) Asked about the undercurrent of grief and loss threading through all these series, Waller-Bridge says she doesn’t quite know how to account for it, except that grief is the thing that most scares her. “I already feel it for the people I love in my life who are still alive,” she says. “I think I write about what I’m frightened of, maybe in a therapeutic way.” She also loves tackling emotions that unnerve the rest of us. Of pitching ideas to Vicky Jones and another close collaborator, Jenny Robins: “They say, ‘That’s heartbreaking. She can’t do that!’ Then I’m like, ‘Excellent! If it’s upset you guys that much, that’s the one.’ ”...
Speaking about Waller-Bridge’s gifts as a storyteller, Scott compares her to the host of a dinner party who leads guests gently through the evening: “Her hands are on the smalls of their back and it feels like, ‘Okay, this is my party, and I want to make sure you have fun, so let me introduce you, first of all, to the bar. And here’s a handsome stranger
.’ Audiences love to gasp and they like truth as well. And I think Phoebe’s able to juggle all those things because of her enormous brain, but also because of her enormous heart.” He pauses. “I’ve just found her to be incredibly thoughtful and fun—and just good at life. She’s good at life!”...'

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Denies She'll Be Replacing Peter Capaldi
Phoebe Waller-Bridge Denies She’ll Be Replacing Peter Capaldi
Despite Newsnight insisting that it was so, it looks like Phoebe Waller-Bridge won’t be Peter Capaldi’s replacement in Doctor Who after all. Although the star and writer of Fleabag is currently busy with the Han Solo Star Wars film and new stateside series Killing Eve, on Tuesday Newsnight ended its programme with a piece on Waller-Bridge accidentally outing herself as the new Doctor in a recent

In his first major TV series commitment, Domhnall Gleeson, known for his roles in the Star Wars and Harry Potter movie franchises and Ex Machina, has been tapped to star in Run, a romantic comedic thriller pilot from Killing Eve creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her frequent collaborator Vicky Jones. Waller-Bridge has a recurring role in the project, which hails from Entertainment One, Jones and Waller-Bridge’s DryWrite and Wigwam Films.
Written by Jones, Run centers on Ruby, a woman living a humdrum existence who one day gets a text inviting her to fulfill a youthful pact, promising true love and self-reinvention, by stepping out of her life to take a journey with her oldest flame.
Gleeson will play Billy Johnson, a successful life guru from a wealthy Irish family. Born with the gift of gab, he deftly combines a boatload of charisma with a boundless need for approval.

The One, Soho Theatre [Nkechinyere Nwobani-Akanwo @NNwobani]
Tumblr media
The One, Vicky Jones debut play, has been brought back to the Soho Theatre for a second life (with the team behind Fleabag and Touch). The couple is ‘different’ in that they have suspect in jokes, relentless “banter”, and their own rules--turns out it’s a lot darker and not half as much fun as it seems.
Jo and Harry (her former University tutor) are up waiting for the arrival of Jo’s sisters baby. Throughout the night Kerry, their “friend” and Harry’s ex keeps stopping by, first to unload on a difficult situation with her boyfriend, he ‘something like rape’d her, which gives way to questioning definition and questions of consent, rape humour (if that’s a thing) and desires (definitely shouldn’t be a thing).
My first questions once I’d digested the whole show, journeys and twists and all, were about responsibility. In conversations and on social media, the kind of statements and jokes made about rape would be completely unacceptable and their would be uproar.B ut because it’s Theatre, it’s allowed? The story could have been just as dark and twisted and toxic had it been about the romanticism of violence and not the constant and contradictory glorification of rape and something exciting or desirable. Since this conversation of blurring lines of consent doesn’t explore the effects or stigma I don’t think it has the right to feature such a subject so heavily but frivolously.
In its writing it was beautiful balanced so the main relationship was full of tension from the outset. Will one of them take it too far, is this a joke, will their threat of breaking up be followed through, will the poison finally overpower the desire to be understand? The simple living room set made it feel familiar like we were getting an insight into friends or colleagues. The actors sustained energy well throughout the rollercoaster of emotions and physical demand required of them. The reveals along the way weren’t particularly surprising but still kept me engaged and intrigued to see how these characters would navigate this fresh blow/challenge, and I admired the ever-shifting power dynamics between Harry and Jo. Each comment and action saw someone different given the upper hand. The playing field was never equal, so similarly, there weren’t any victims either.
