Remembrance - My personal story with Cory Monteith

Today is the anniversary of Cory Monteith's death. It's been 8 years since that terrible day and today just feels like a day of personal reflection. I don't talk about it a lot because I feel like his death just hits differently for me.

I was blessed to meet this man on three occasions. I still count them as some of my favorite days of my life. In October of 2011 at the Roxy in LA, a friend was able to secure a meeting between Cory and my family behind the venue after their practice before the show that evening. We got to have a chat about his impact on all of us, delivered to him through letters in a book he dubbed "The Cory Book". And yes we even talked about fanfiction and I was horrified when I was told he read some of the fanfics out there.

He stood around, meeting my daughter and my friends who had traveled with me. He took a multitude of photos, even doing reshoots when he didn't like the lighting, and apologized profusely for using the word fuck in front of my 11 year old daughter. Because that's just the kind of guy he was. Personal, perfectly imperfect, and a regular dude. He asked if we were going to be able to attend the concerts coming in the next month and I told him we weren't sure we could make it yet.

He offered to sign stuff for us and we told him no, we just wanted to ensure he got the book and to know how important he was to us and his fandom. He made us all feel at ease and immediately tweeted us afterwards to thank us for talking to him and the kind words in our book. This day will forever go down as one of my favorite days of my entire life.

Fast forward a few months and my daughter and friends once again hit the road from AZ to California, this time to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. We were able to see the band twice that weekend, up front and personal. Bonnie Dune's band was so inspirational to me as I went through my divorce and every single one of them took the time to hang out, take photos, and get to know us. Cory was no exception.

Though he was the "Famous" one in the band, he never acted too big for anyone. He drove the van (even though I watched him back into a sign so I'm not sure that he was the wisest choice), traveled around like a regular guy, and made time for everyone. When we entered the venue that night I ran into him at the bar and he immediately smiled and said "Hey, it's Cory Book, you made it." This was a man who just made you feel comfortable and special.

Even when I dropped my sharpie for him to finally sign my ticket that night, I leaned over and said "Fuck me", he laughed loudly and said "Don't worry I come prepared." To which I replied that I had dropped my sharpie in the toilet anyway. Yes I'm a dumbass, but you felt so at ease that things like that would just happen with him.

On July 13th 2013, I was at my then boyfriends house for the weekend. My daughter was with her grandmother and she texted me freaking out that twitter was saying Cory had died. I thought it was a joke and logged on. When it finally hit me that it was real, I sobbed for hours. I attended a New Kids on the Block concert with my daughter, sister, and mother the next day and I think my daughter and I cried through every song that Boys to Men sang that evening as they opened the show.

I had never felt so much like I had lost a friend in my life. It was a tragedy beyond anything I could compare at the time. I didn't understand how it could be true.

I wasn't naïve, addiction runs heavy in my family. I get it, its hard and he had just left rehab. But mostly I was sad for his legacy. For everything he had accomplished to be tarnished by the end. He never deserved that. He will forever be an honest and down to earth guy who spent time shooting the shit with an 11 year old kid, her mom and her friends just because that's the kind of guy he was. He was special. He overcame so many obstacles from being homeless, to drugs, to making it on Glee, and that can never be taken away.

I don't put him on a pedestal, he made mistakes, hell he died because he made a terrible mistake, but that does not erase all the good he did for people, for me, for my friends, for countless others. I will forever miss hearing him sing, seeing that lopsided smile, and watching him simply perform. He had so much potential that the world missed out on. I miss him greatly. I think I always will.
