5x01 Discussion #3

Happy 18th birthday to Zoe Machwitz! There was some tense moments at her party between Nora and her old friend group, but one person in particular was having a nice time.

Fatou was very obviously crushing on Kieu My, something Nora could pick up on immediately although Fatou denied it. Did you ever think Fatou and Kieu My would get into a relationship?

5x01 Discussion #2

Nora had both a break up and a broken phone this week, and was only able to confront one of these problems.

So what was your first thoughts on #Mysteryguy? Nora was rightfully upset at first, but gained the upper hand by taking his bag hostage.

For the first discussion:

I think it's totally valid for Constantin to want distance to Nora after their break up. And as it seems, Nora joined the friend group later and/or was never as attached to them as Consti was, so it would be 'weird' if Consti stopped hanging out with his friends just because of the break up. However HOW they handled this is totally unfair. Consti decided to not want to be around Nora anymore, and the group just went along without even taking Nora's feelings into consideration. That shows that they do not really care about Nora. Isi is the only one trying to have a personal conversation with her and trying to explain what is going on (even if they could have done better there), instead of doing the silent judging and group confrontation we see in this episode.

But even if the Instas are framed as the 'bad ones' in season 5, we should keep in mind that they are only teenagers, and that they are probably dealing with a lot of additional problems (especially Consti and Zoe). So they could have dealt with the situation a lot better, but I don't really blame them for acting like they do (only speaking about ep 1 here and especially only about Nora!)

The last point I wanted to make is, that i always wanted to know why the Instas were so close and always defending each other like that. Especially because Zoe, and later also Isi seem to notice that Consti has some toxic traits and is emotionally overreacting on stuff. And i am sad that we never got to see their dynamics really well or got some insights in how and why they became that close as friends.

I have always wondered how attached Nora was with that group, and if it's possible she joined more because of her relationship with Constantin vs. her sisterhood with Zoe.

The characters are teenagers, and that's the age we're supposed to be making mistakes and finding out about ourselves, so we can't fault them too much. It was such a tricky situation and emotions were high for all involved. You're so correct.

As for your last point - I'm the same. They seem to have been friends for a few years (maybe except for Finn), but they vary between telling each other everything and being very ride-or-die, to being closed off and bitter (Consti for example didn't even tell his friends that he and Nora broke up, Zoe had to find out through Nora).
