Angel in A Hoodie
~1.5k
also posted on ao3
@misha-moose-dean-burger-lover said the world needs more cas in oversized hoodie fics and i wholeheartedly agree, so enjoy some fluff, pining, and comfy!cas :)
“We really need to buy you an umbrella,” Dean said as he and Cas walked into Goodwill. He glanced at Cas, whose hair was still wet and plastered to his forehead from getting caught in the rain. His trenchcoat looked dark beige now, it was so soaked through, and water dripped onto the floor with his every step.
“I didn’t realize it was going to storm,” Cas said, his tone defensive. His shoes squeaked as he quickened his steps to walk next to Dean. “I wouldn’t have gone out to the woods if I knew.”
They had driven that morning to investigate a werewolf sighting in a town a few hours away. While Dean talked to the police chief, Cas went into the woods where the supposed werewolf had been spotted. It’d begun to pour rain, Dean had learned the werewolf was nothing more than a rabid wolf, and Cas got drenched for nothing.
Cas was leaving behind a trail of muddy footsteps, and Dean caught one of the employees giving them a dirty look. He smiled at her apologetically and she stalked away, probably to grab a mop. “All the dark clouds in the sky didn’t give you a hint?”
Cas shot him his own dirty look and Dean raised his hands. “Sorry, sorry.” He couldn’t help grin, though, at how bedraggled and grumpy Cas looked. Almost adorable—not that he would ever think Cas was adorable.
He hesitated for a moment, then lifted his hand to wipe a drop of rainwater from Cas’ face with his sleeve. Cas leaned into his touch and Dean tried to ignore the way that simple shift caused his heartbeat to quicken. “Maybe we should’ve bought you a towel first,” he said, dropping his hand.
Under normal circumstances, he might’ve argued in favor of Cas sucking it up and wearing the wet clothes—and that was not at all influenced by the way Cas’ white shirt was now see-through and sticking to his chest. He didn’t notice that at all, thank you very much. But they had a two hour drive ahead of them and sitting in wet clothes wouldn’t be very enjoyable. Seeing as neither of them had extra clothes packed, and Cas’ grace was too depleted to waste it drying himself off, Goodwill it was.
“Okay, pants are that way,” Dean said, pointing to a rack of clothes. He headed down another row where a sign read, Men’s Shirts. “I’ll grab you a shirt.”
The selection was sparse, and Dean scanned the rack before grabbing a t-shirt at random. A drawing of a man holding a fishing rod; the words, Mine is So Big I Have To Use Both Hands, emblazoned underneath.
Nope, nope, nope, Dean thought, shoving the shirt back on the rack. They were not that desperate. He didn’t want to have to explain that one to Cas. He selected instead a plain, light blue t-shirt, belatedly realizing he was choosing one to match Cas’ eyes.
At the squeak of shoes, he turned to see Cas walking over with a pair of jeans and what looked to be a grey hoodie, holding them away from his body so they didn’t get wet.
“This good?” Dean asked, holding up the shirt.
Cas nodded and reached out to touch it. “I like the color.”
Dean reddened. “Yeah, uh, great.” He took the jeans and hoodie from Cas. “Come on, let’s buy this stuff and get on the road.”
After paying, Cas went into a changing room to get out of his wet clothes. Dean was texting Sam to let him know they would be heading back soon, when he heard the sound of the changing room door open. “All good?” he asked, without looking up.
“I don’t think I picked the right size.”
Dean looked up from his phone to see Cas standing in the doorway wearing a massive grey hoodie. The sleeves hung down past his hands and the hem nearly reached his knees. Cas stared down at himself in disbelief and Dean stifled a laugh. “Yeah, I’ll say so."
“It looked so much smaller on the hanger.” Cas lifted his arms out to the sides—the fabric dwarfing his body—then dropped them with a frustrated huff.
“Well, at least you’ll be warm.” Stepping forward, Dean motioned to Cas, and Cas extended his arm, watched him roll the sleeve up to his wrist. “And everyone will think you’re part of a softball league, so there’s that.”
Cas frowned. “What? Why?”
Dean pointed to the purple text across the front of the hoodie which read, Wissahickon Softball League, along with a cartoon depiction of some sort of rodent in a baseball cap.
Cas sighed. “I liked the chipmunk.” He scowled at Dean. “Don’t laugh.” Dean bit back a smile and Cas let him roll up his other sleeve. “It is very comfortable, though. I like this store. I think it’s very considerate of humans to share their clothes.”
“Guess so. Though ideally you would wash them before you put them on.”
His hands now free from the confines of the hoodie sleeves, Cas put his wet clothes in a plastic Goodwill bag. “Who do you think wore these clothes before?”
“The hoodie? I’m going to assume a softball player.”
They walked to the doors leading outside and Cas pulled at the fabric of the hoodie to look at the design. “I wonder why they got rid of it.”
“Maybe they died.”
“That’s very dark, Dean.”
Pushing open the door to outside, Dean shrugged. “Alright, maybe they decided softball wasn’t their passion and quit, and are still very much alive. Speaking of which, we should go to a baseball game. You would like it.” He could picture it now: Cas's serious questions as he tried to understand the human pastime, his excitement as he completely missed the point and found some meandering way to connect it to a deeper, philosophical meaning.
Cas nodded thoughtfully. “That does sound interesting. I would enjoy that.”
They crossed the wet and shining parking lot to Baby. The rain had slowed to an icy drizzle and Dean hitched his shoulders to stop it from running down his neck. Cas blinked against the raindrops and Dean gestured to him. “Use your hood.”
"Oh." Cas pulled the hood up over his head, then slipped his hands into the wide pocket along the front of the hoodie. He smiled up at Dean, his eyes shaded. “These are very nice features.”
God, what a dork, Dean thought, though he couldn’t stop a smile. He almost put an arm around Cas, then quickly looked away, not sure where that instinct came from. He hurried his steps to Baby before the rain started pouring again and soaked through to his skin.
“Are you cold?” Cas asked as they got in the Impala.
“What? No. I’m good.” Dean turned on the ignition and rubbed his hands together.
Cas reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder and Dean froze, felt a warmth radiate from Cas’ palm down his arm, then spread across his whole body. He didn’t know how much of the warmth was from Cas’ grace or from the simple reason Cas was touching him.
The warmth suddenly faded and Cas sighed. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, pulling his hand away. “I wish I could do more.”
“It’s alright.” He felt the loss when Cas let go of his shoulder, felt now the cold radiating from the windows, creeping under his skin.
Cas frowned at his hands, palms up, and Dean hated the way he seemed so frustrated with himself, with his weakening abilities, so he tried to joke. “You know, I think it was your trenchcoat that gave you your super powers. This hoodie’s probably a cursed object that’s sapping them away. I should’ve tested for EMF.”
It was stupid, but a smile tugged at Cas’ mouth anyway. He met Dean’s eyes and, as always, Dean felt himself sinking into his gaze. The searching, intent look made every moment between them feel so weighty, like at any moment one of them might say something that would change everything between them forever. It was terrifying. Even more terrifying, the way the urge so often rose up in him to be the one to change it all. To say… he wasn’t even sure. He wasn’t even sure what he felt.
Clearing his throat, Dean tore his eyes away. Rain smattered against Baby and obscured the road as he pulled out of the parking lot. He glanced at Cas, who now stared out the passenger window, his hands tucked back into the hoodie pocket, the hood still pulled up over his head. He looked so warm. Dean allowed himself the fantasy of pulling over onto the side of the road, sliding over on the bench seat to press himself up next to Cas, both of them sitting silently as rain drummed on Baby’s roof, maybe Cas sliding a hand around him, running his fingers through his hair…
Blinking, he reached over and turned on the radio, turned it up too loud to distract himself from those thoughts. Cas glanced over and Dean motioned to him.
“I like this look,” he said. “You look very comfy.” His face heated giving the compliment, but Cas didn’t seem to notice, only smiled and ducked his head. Was Cas... blushing?
No, Dean decided, it was only an illusion from the orange glow of the lampposts outside. Returning his eyes to the road, he gripped the steering wheel and continued driving into the rainy night.

World building is the best tbh. I’m forever world building and now I have several worlds to play in and my neurodivergent brain cannot stay still enough to focus on one lmao. SLOWBURN ROMANCES ARE MY LITERAL JAM LIKE PLS!!! I LOVE THEM!! Also!!!! Concepts!!!! Pls share!!!! I love learning about the worlds of my fave fics and I can hands down say right now that this fic will literally shoot to the top of my list of favourites which means you’ll occupy the top three spots. Sorry to hear that ur feeling rough, so am sending u the biggest hug. I’m not okay but I’m taking care of myself today so that I will be 🧡-🐈⬛
alsjfsldkjf i have too many worlds TBH, literally one of the best parts of my 2020 was writing for the classic rock fandom and writing one of my good friend’s ocs alongside mine, like there’s so many different worlds that our two characters have now, i’m like 26k deep into a high school au that i need to get back to at some point, and then i wrote a oneshot abt the high school au but they’re adults, and then there’s also the original timeline, and then there’s the present day in the original timeline where they have kids and i probably care too much about people who aren’t real...... hahaha
OKAY OKAY OKAY HERE WE GO I’LL GIVE KIND OF AN OVERVIEW OF THE ALBUMS AND A FEW SONGS BUT IF U WANT ME TO GO IN DEPTH ON ANY OTHER SONG JUST ASK!!!
yes i have a playlist for each, if you wanna hear how i interpret the vibes of the songs. if you interpret them differently, thats awesome!! i’d love to hear y’all’s opinions on them!!
testing one two - the first ep they release, the song titles are mostly themed (fast forward, press play, pause, rewind), but are mostly things y/n has been working on for a while but never got around to finishing, things they are rather proud of. i see you shiver with... is the first song they wrote specifically for the album, and it’s the last song on the EP because it’s a Rocky Horror reference; i see you shiver with...
a n t i c i p a t i o n - first full album!! the vibe is Hopeful But Hesitant it has all the songs from the ep, plus some new ones!! collabs with youtube musicians troye and dodie, and y/n’s label sets up a collab that turns into a genuine friendship. the breakout dance hit is what else is there to say ft. Troye Sivan, which is about not knowing what to make content about when it feels like you’ve already told the world everything. it featured the prechorus and hook
You, know, ev-ery-thing about me / gave it all for free / my life in HD / So, let’s dance, let me see your hips sway / we’re gonna be okay / what else is there to say?
So say that you love me, say that you love me, say that you love me / let’s die hand in hand. / I’ll tell you I love you, tell you I love you, tell you I love you / supply and demand.
personally, i also conceptually enjoy srs bsns which is a really upbeat song about how they don’t care if people don’t take them seriously because they know in their heart that what they’re doing is good
hyperfocus - 2nd EP, a pretty substantial departure from their usual style, but also happens to quietly be Corpse’s favourite, and is actually y/n’s most polarising, because it has both the Grammy award winning HEARTBURN and the o brother where art thou which was written partially as a joke to capture a fond moment of them and 5SOS dicking around together in a hotel. written while on tour wit 5SOS, im writing the reader as having ADHD (because I have ADHD and i can do what i want), and the backstory is that they’d changed the medication/dosage they were taking, and as it’s their first full tour, they were under a lot of stress and were in a weird place mentally and emotionally, and hyperfocus is the result of that. i’m going through some stuff has HUGE agoraphobic vibes.
HEARTBURN has the same vibes as Florence + The Machines’ Howl. It’s about being a demon without saying that or directly implying that unless you know demons real well. This is when the pressure for them to confirm their identity got real bad, and it was their way of working through those emotions.
tear in existence in the shape of a person / when i’m seeing clearly i can’t see myself / world can’t swallow what it can’t get it’s teeth into / got everything i wanted but i ain’t got my health
Got heart-burn--- / I’ll tear me apart / I’ll tear you apart / I’ll tear me apart.
SCREAM gets rereleased as a remixed single featuring Fall Out Boy the following year. It won the MTV music award for best collaboration in 2018.
In the time between hyperfocus and working on it, Y/N releases several singles, including a cover of Tell Him by The Exciters to be featured in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. They also take time to sort out their health, do a little bit more YT stuff, and travel internationally to do festivals.
working on it - is kind of a middle ground between their original stuff, and hyperfocus, like pop-punk meets horror-pop meets whatever you’d classify halsey as. the first three songs were mostly written before the fic starts, so before they’re getting back to YT, but the last three, nightmare scenario, designed to hurt (touch me), and not scared were all written after they’d started hanging out with sykkuno and corpse.
in-universe, imposter syndrome was originally something else, along the same lines of tired that they’re hiding that they’re a demon, but after meeting corpse nd sykkuno and having people who know, and lowkey being influenced by corpse’s music, the song changes directions, and YO OKAY YO::
I literally am so fucking flattered, my darling friend @bingusmode wrote lyrics for imposter syndrome and I’ve been yELLING about them ever since i’ve read them!! (also bunnie is fantastic and lovely in general 10/10)
if you thought you saw me
i’d think about it twice
cuz while i know i’m naughty
everybody thinks i’m nice
cutest giggles get me
places that i long to be
but it’s not long before
everybody hates me
when you figure out i’m fucked up
you’ll probably think that can’t be right
but babe my image runs to save me
cuz i’m ugly day and night
nothing good about me
not the angel that i seem
cuz i’m a piece of shit
and i’ll ruin your fuckin dreams
i’m an impostor babe
you better run for your life
cuz there’s a bloodlust runnin through me
and you’re dripping off my knife
there’s no one here to save you
cuz you ate up all my lies
so beg me while you can
and draft up all your goodbyes
if any of y’all are inspired by anything i put out, feel free to take it and run!! you have my blessing!! i am so overwhelmingly flattered by people who like my stuff enough to create because of it, directly or indirectly! lyrics, art, songs, anything!! legit! I love you!!
okay so designed to hurt (touch me) has big House of Memories by Panic! At The Disco vibes, and YES it’s about Corpse. YES it sends mixed messages. YES it has greek myth imagery and YES that imagery is confusing. not sure if any of these sets of lyrics actually go after each other but also idk??
will my fall from grace be graceful / as each move i see you make? / propped up on pedestals side by side / beneath our feet they shake / i’m the only one to hear you ask / “What have they done to me?” / My boy, your wax throne is sun-drenched / you’ll fall in the name of your legacy.
eyes like yours watched rome burn / while hands like mine lit the pyre / we both heard me say we’d go down in flames / now you’re turning me into a liar / since you smile like that, like you can’t feel the sting / and we both know i can’t feel the fire
been telling myself i’m designed to hurt / but, baby, aren’t we a sight? /
check your reflection, your angles, apollo / you’re icarus in the right light /
we’re on the edge, i’m not scared to fall / we’ll take refuge in the night /
been telling yourself you’re designed to hurt / but, baby, doesn’t this feel right?
also, albumtouralbumtour is a reference to Bohemian Rhapsody.
OKAY AND FINALLY
n o s t a l g i a - the album the reader’s working on during the fic.
literally as i was writing this, bunnie sent through some FIRE lyrics for how the light gets in, (@bingusmode) i am going to be thinking about these on REPEAT for the next MONTH BRUV
little bit of darkness, treat me like a toy
i got my hopes up and got them destroyed
bitter taste of regret sitting heavy on my tongue
can’t believe i let you convince me that you were the one
sitting here in silence, fabric running thin
petals burning in my lungs and stealing oxygen
embers from a cigarette falling to the floor
god i can’t take anymore
so i stumble to the window and pull the shades
and the moon pours in like you threw a grenade
i can’t understand why
i keep trying
cuz i never seem to win
but having any hope is how the light gets in
from there, moment before impact ft. Billie Eilish is a club anthem along the lines of bad guy or COPYCAT, bass heavy with a drop that’s out of this world.
powdered pain, i’m in your veins / i’m the sting, the drip, the thing / you’re craving, but you hate to see me misbehaving / i heard my breakdown got you high / it’s true, but baby i can’t lie / i never got that rush, that burn / that makes you feel alive, i had to learn / to pick the slippery slope down which i fell / plan my pitstops on the way to hell / to pick my padding before i spiral / so if i break it’ll be in style
watch my misdirect, now freeze, / notice you can’t see the forest for the trees / you’re so desperate for my demise / but baby, i’ll make you watch me rise.
this is the moment before impact
controlled chaos, crash land / take a breath, trust the plan / i know you hope i’m not okay / you get off on my audio misery
controlled chaos, crash land / take a breath, trust the plan / i need you to know i want it this way / my breakdown won me a grammy
and this is the moment before impact
ur my favourite - interlude ft. sykkuno is probably one of my favourites, it’s just really soft, just a snippet of a conversation between the reader and sykkuno, maybe one of them told a joke and they both just sound real happy and sweet. its nice. it’s a nice moment.
means something is also for sykkuno!! it’s about how good-strange it is to be open and honest with friends, and how they usually aren’t but they’re glad they can be open and honest with him!!
meanwhile, i don’t think about u - interlude ft. CORPSE is a phonecall between corpse & the reader right after they announce they’re going to feature on acting like that, where corpse asks if they do this sort of thing to spite him, to which the reader responds ‘do i consider you when i’m making decisions about my career? no, corpse, actually i don’t think about you at all’ which then directly contrasts the song that ends the album, which is (how it feels to be) beautiful fireworks, which is essentially ‘i know how hard it is to exist like this, to be the centre of attention, to give off light and bring people joy, even when you’re in pain. i’m here for you. i love you.’
okay, i swear im done now, i’ll get back to writing the fic! (also i cannot BELIVE i managed to figure out how to embed those playlists but im so happy) edit: it didn’t actually work when i posted the ask, so anyways im sorry but y’all are abt to be spammed with playlists because i care too much abt this fic

Here’s the first chapter of Close Encounters, the Faebug/Hive AU series I’ve been working on. I’m gonna cross post most of this stuff to Tumblr too just in an effort to keep things organized. :>
It’s Monday night—
The last Monday night before the end of the world, not that anyone knows it—
And there are two blue, pupil-less eyes the size of the headlights on her beat up VW Beetle staring at her through her bedroom window.
They blink out almost as soon as Charlie twitches. Whatever it was probably got spooked off by the fact that she jolted upright in bed and stared right back at it, compelled by— something. That feeling of being watched. The remnants of a nightmare. Whatever.
If whatever the eyes belonged to made noise as it departed, she couldn’t hear it over the buzz of the heavy fan her mom helped her drag into the big bedroom when she moved in to the old Ochoco house. It might as well not’ve been there at all.
Except for the fact that she saw it, and all the hair on the back of her neck and along her arms stood like she’d rubbed a balloon over herself to see the static electricity.
Lots of things had been a little weird since yesterday, though. Especially in the upper Northwest. It’s not exactly every day that a volcano goes off in the United States. Even if Oregon is a state away from Washington, Sunday had been stressful, to say the least. Some part of her had anticipated another explosion at some point. Guillermo had teased her for being a worry-wart and then started listing off all sorts of possibly apocalyptic events from most to least likely on his fingers. He got to ‘alien robots who disguise themselves as kitchen appliances’ before Charlie threw a shoe at him.
Under the quilt next to her, Guillermo sleeps as he always does, an arm shoved under his ridiculous stack of pillows and his long legs tangled in more than his fair share of the sheets.
Maybe it’s all in her head. Dreams were supposed to be how the brain processed stuff that happened during the day, right? So.
So she’s not crazy. It’s just her brain trying to make sense of the whole active volcano thing compounded by childhood fears and the well-ingrained camping habit of keeping an ear out for bears trying to pilfer your supplies.
Probably.
Charlie doesn’t sleep the rest of the night, or she could have sworn she hadn’t, but between this blink and the next the alarm is going off on the nightstand and Memo’s already in the kitchen, fighting with the coffee maker he can’t stand to get rid of because he bought it with his first paycheck from his magazine gig. (Who knew speculative sci-fi nerd writing not only paid, but paid well, with the right kind of publisher?) If he’d heard anything in the night, he doesn’t mention it.
After pulling her socks on but before shoveling flapjacks into her mouth, the eyes are forgotten.
If they’d ever existed at all.
————
In fact, the eyes remain forgotten all the way until her third break of the day, hanging out with two of the older rangers who’d come back to the main office after clearing out a couple of downed trees off the Crater Lake hiking trail. Samson Jr.— who usually went by ‘Spike’— was a lanky, shaggy brunet a few years older than Charlie who still got carded at every bar they went to, with a permanent sunburn across the bridge of his nose and a personality so sunny it bordered on obnoxious. On the other hand, his father, Samson Sr., was a warm, stocky man who worked construction before throwing his lot in with parks and recreation and could have been anywhere from his mid 40s to his late 60s. They’d both been there when Charlie had started as an intern in college and were probably both going to still be there if she ever decided to leave or get transferred somewhere warmer, like California, or something.
She liked the both of them. Samson was more of a family figure to her than her stepdad Ron, and he’d helped her get a permanent spot on the team. Sometimes she and Memo went out with Spike and his girlfriend Carly, and Memo and Spike had more than a few interests in common. Mainly Star Wars, but also stuff like He-Man and tabletop games and computers. Most of it went over Charlie’s head— she’d grown up a music nerd thanks to Dad and a car fanatic thanks to Uncle Hank, never much one for pulp fiction— but she and Carly enjoyed teasing the two of them for being ‘Oregon’s own X-Files department.'
So it wasn’t exactly surprising when Spike brought up his perennial fixation, Bigfoot theories, again.
“I don’t know,” he’d started, mouth full of half of a Snickers bar as he waved the other end of it around for emphasis. “I don’t know. But I don’t think that those trees just fell over for no reason. I mean, there were some aftershocks from the eruption, right? But nothing out here. It kind of looked more like some kind of impact hit them, sort of like a boulder had rolled down the hill and toppled ‘em over. But that doesn’t make any sense either, since there’s no loose rocks large enough to knock over three whole fir trees on that side of the trail. Maybe it was a Sasquatch. I bet they mark their territory by brushing up against trees like the bears do, and this one just got over-enthusiastic.”
Samson snatched the other half of the candy bar before Spike could accidentally smack Charlie with it, just to toss it back into the basket of goodies on the windowsill again.
“First of all, stop raiding the candy stash. That’s for visitors, and last I checked, you haven’t been a visitor since you were 16,” the older man scolded, but he couldn’t quite keep the amusement off his face— Spike had to have gotten his enthusiasm from somewhere. “And something tells me that if there really was a ‘sat-squash’ or whatever it is, it probably wouldn’t be hanging around where there’s regular humans coming and going all day, every day. At least if it knew what was good for it. It was just a regular tree fall, it’s been cleared, and now we’ve got more firewood for the campers.”
Though mourning the loss of his candy, Spike was quick to poke a finger in the air triumphantly at Samson.
“Okay, but how do you explain the fur clumps we found scattered there, huh? Way softer than any regular sort of wild animal.”
Charlie had been absently nodding along to their pseudo-argument, only to perk up at Spike’s outburst, dropping the pen she’d been fiddling with. And then curse herself out silently as both of the older rangers turned to her at the way she’d reacted. In the back of her head, she remembered: that split-second glimpse of those unnaturally big eyes, framed by fluff and set into a broad, flat face.
“Uh.”
Spike grinned.
“See? Charlie agrees with me—”
“She said ‘uh,’ Junior, that’s not an agreement—”
“I mean, maybe,” she blurts out before she can stop herself, heat flushing her face at the outburst, awkwardly picking up the pen she’d dropped to snap the cap over it again. “I don’t know what’s out there. You know what they tell us when we start ranger training; don’t go off the trails.”
God, it’s like Charlie can’t help herself, suddenly, as superstitious and paranoid as one of the characters Memo would write into his stories. It was all just stuff the trainers would tell them to haze the kids starting out, the sort of shit teenagers joked about or camp councilors made up to freak out their campers. None of it was actually true. But in another life, maybe, to someone more interesting or smarter or less lucky (or luckier, some stupid impulse wants to say) than Charlie—
For a moment, vivid and shining, Charlie felt some spark of pure terror in her.
The thing in her bedroom window. Was it still near her house? Was she going to come home to find Guillermo missing, or worse?
“Sure, some of it is just common sense safety guidelines, but what about the weirder ones? The rules about not climbing random staircases in the woods— don’t stop to listen to any music if you’re not near a registered campsite, like that’s ever been a thing? Or never telling someone you meet without gear on a trail what your name is? I mean, there’s got to be some kind of a reason for these things, or else we wouldn’t all have them hammered into our skulls over the course of three years,” she rambles, pulse thudding in her ears. “Nobody makes up how-tos about things for no reason.”
In the quiet pause in conversation that followed, Charlie felt the embarrassed burn on her face spread to her ears and creep down the back of her neck.
“…Or it’s an opportunistic raccoon?” she squeaks out.
“Probably a raccoon. Damn.” Spike finally relents, shoulders slumping with a dejected sigh. He really looks genuinely disappointed, soon ambling over to drape himself over Charlie’s desk in the hopes of some sympathy pats as Samson chuckles in the background about how today’s cinema is rotting everybody's brains out their ears.

Nobody notices the candy basket on the windowsill going missing as they head back out to do rounds of the campgrounds.

Peter like,, falling behind on his schoolwork or feeling overwhelmed with both school and spidermanning and then Tony helping him get back on track?
Oh man, buckle your seatbelts, I’m about to project onto Peter Parker.
Read on AO3
Peter let his head drop into his hands as he stared down at the worksheet on the desk in front of him. He had been doing so well with staying on top of things, but he was halfway through webbing up a mugger at the end of his patrol when he remembered he had a Spanish assignment due tomorrow.
So here he is, watching his clock tick closer towards sunrise, trying to remember the irregular preterit verbs and ignoring the bruise on the side of his face that will hopefully be gone by morning.
It’s not as if he wanted to be doing homework four hours before his alarm would go off. After the blip, there was chaos in Queens. All of the universe, really, but he was having a hard enough time focusing on his own small borough. He had to help whoever he could. A few hours less of sleep certainly wouldn’t kill him. Not when he could be using those hours to save other people’s lives.
His weekly patrols turned to twice a week, to every other day, to every evening, to whenever he wasn’t doing homework or eating. He worked on assignments in between classes and during decathlon practice. He studied for decathlon before he ate dinner. It was a delicate system, sure, but as long as he didn’t make any mistakes he would be fine.
Of course, thanks to Sr. DiPaolo, his delicate system was crashing down around him like a pyramid of champagne flutes. He knows he should just go to bed and take the zero, but he can’t stop looking at the page. He has to do this assignment. If he doesn’t, his grades will fall and he’ll never get into MIT and he’ll have to be a high school dropout and will probably end up homeless on the street selling himself for food. All because of this god damn Spanish worksheet.
He holds back a choked sob. Great, and now he’s crying as well. The words in front of him float around his head as his eyes burn. He can’t remember the last time he got a full night’s sleep. Even when he gets in bed on time, he keeps himself up thinking of the battle at the Avenger’s compound. He saw Tony die. He knows, rationally, that Tony is currently living happily at the lakehouse, still recovering from the damage the gauntlet caused. But he saw the light leave his eyes. He saw his pale (too pale, always too pale) skin flecked with blood and dust fall slack. And that’s all he sees when he closes his eyes to sleep.
Lovely stuff to think about when he’s trying not to cry.
He scratches out a shaky tuviste before jolting at the buzz of his phone on the desk. The screen proudly flashed a picture taken a few months– well, 5 years and a few months– ago of him and Tony posing with a specialized blender he made for Dum-E’s birthday. It’s Tony’s contact photo. Peter debates letting it ring and avoiding the lecture about being up too late. He sighs and answers it. He just needs to get his mind off of his homework one way or another. Even if it means he’ll be sleeping even less.
“Hey, Mr. Stark.” He hopes he sounds like he just got up, rather than like he’s holding back tears.
“Hey, kid. How are things?” Peter’s eyebrows scrunched at the tinny voice coming through the phone.
“You called me at 3am just to ask how things were?” His voice cracked when he raised it at the end of his question. Hopefully, it went unnoticed.
“Are you doing okay, Peter?” No such luck. Tony’s voice had dropped to a lower register. And he used his actual name. There was no escaping this now.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. It’s nothing superhero related, so you don’t need to worry,” Peter said as he wiped his nose, the not-crying pretense already out the window.
“Pete,” he was really not used to hearing this level of care in Tony’s voice, “I’m Tony 2.0 now. I’ve got a kid. I’m more emotionally mature, according to Pepper at least. You can talk to me. I’m all about that sappy stuff now.” Just what he needed. A reminder that everything has changed.
“Why’d you call me, then?” Peter couldn’t help but feel like a petulant child. He heard a drawn-out breath come from the other side of the call.
“I had a nightmare where you didn’t come back.” Peter freezes in his place. He was expecting a deflecting joke, not an actual answer. “We still saved the rest of the universe, but you stayed in the soul stone. Now I can handle that on my own, but I saw you were in the suit just a couple minutes ago– May and I will be talking to you about that, by the way– and I decided to give you a call.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh. I care about you, kid. So what’s going on? Why are you crying in the middle of the night?”
“It’s stupid. I have an assignment due in Spanish tomorrow and I’m just starting it now. It’s not even that hard, I just can’t do it. I’m going to fail.” Peter adamantly held back the sob crawling up his throat.
“You’re not going to fail. How much is this assignment worth?” Tony’s voice was impossibly soft as he spoke.
“It’s uh– part of the homework section, which is 20% of the final grade.” He sniffed pathetically. “It’s so stupid, sorry.”
“It’s not stupid.” A pause. “Peter, is this really about the assignment? You know one missed assignment won’t change your grade. Last I checked you still have a 98 in Spanish.”
There’s a pause as Peter catches his breath. It’s really not about the assignment. The assignment is just the tip of an iceberg that’s been growing ever since he came back.
“It’s just all… so much.” Peter’s words came out quietly, as if afraid he would break completely if he spoke any louder.
“Kid, you’re 18. Or 23, depending on how the government decides to count the blip. You’re pushing yourself too hard. You’ve been patrolling every night for hours on end and still getting straight As. You need to care for yourself.”
“There are too many people out there who need Spider-Man. I can’t just let them get hurt,” Peter says as he tries to get his breathing under control. Tony waits patiently.
“Listen to me, Pete. Are you listening?” Tony waits to hear a confirmation from him before continuing. “You can’t save everyone. You’re saying that, while you’re on patrol, every person who got in trouble is in trouble because you didn’t save them. Right?”
Peter nods before remembering he’s on the phone. He mutters a quick yes.
“You’re wrong. New York’s a shitty place. People get hurt every day. You can’t blame yourself for that. If you look at it from my perspective– the right one– every person you help is safe and unharmed because of you. You’re not looking at the people you’ve saved, just the ones you didn’t. You’re setting yourself up to fail. No one can stop all crime in Queens. Not even Spider-Man.”
“I guess.” Peter doesn’t even feel upset anymore. He just feels numb. He wants to go to sleep.
“God, this must be how Rhodey felt. Back to the matter at hand: your homework.”
“I can’t do it, Mr. Stark, but I can’t miss an assignment.” Peter runs a hand through his hair and ignores the way his voice wavered.
“Alright. Executive decision time. I’m excusing you from school tomorrow. What day is tomorrow, Friday? No, not you–” Tony’s voice gets quieter as he moves away from the speaker to scold his AI.
“Yeah, tomorrow’s Friday.” Peter can feel a glimmer of amusement underneath whatever has a grip on his chest.
“Good, good. So you’re going to skip school and come to the lake house for a nice long weekend. I can work the details out with May before she goes to work. Text me when you wake up and I can send Happy over.”
“Mr. Stark, I can’t miss a day! I’ll just fall even more behind. I can’t– handle that right now.” His breath hitches as he speaks.
“Yes, you can. Bring your homework but don’t bother bringing the suit. I’ll work with you on your homework, but this is going to be a Spider-Man free weekend. We’ll just be conjugating verbs until the cows come home. You’re a smart kid, Pete. Believe me, one day off from high school won’t kill you. Overworking yourself might, though.”
Peter sighs. He knows when he’s in a fight he can’t win.
“Okay.”
“Looking forward to it. And, kid, I do care about you. Don’t be afraid to talk to me. Even if it’s not related to your sticky friend. I know it must be strange that I have a daughter now, but you’re still my kid. That’s never going to change no matter how many space-dictators try to take over the universe. You’re incredible. You just have to give yourself some slack. Now, get some sleep. I– I love you.”
Before Peter can respond, Tony ends the call. He’s left looking blankly at the phone in his hand. Well, that was new.
He’s not better yet. He has a while to go before he can feel relaxed. But, slowly, the weight on his shoulders gets a little lighter. And that night, he dreams of springtime.

N’Pressions: Artemis Fowl Movie
Well it has certainly been a while since I have written a film review. So I watched Artemis Fowl last night. Admittedly it was not exactly a movie on my radar. It initially was until I saw the trailer and much like Mulan it felt off. I came across the books quite by accident years ago in Borders when the first four books were out in print. And I would eventually get the rest in hard copies as soon as it came out. Personally I enjoyed these books more than I liked Harry Potter and I dropped those after Goblet of Fire. Personally Artemis felt more like a character to me who had a much stronger arc than Harry did. I know people are going to argue with me on that point and its fine if you disagree with that-that is just how I feel about the situation.
Now the book has a very simple premise: Artemis Fowl is a 12 year old genius who is part of a criminal family known as the Fowls. His father Artemis Sr. disappeared during one of his business trips and Artemis has been using the Fowl funds and network to try and find him so they can keep the business going. But he is running out of money and needs a boost fast. His solution? Fairy gold. So after dealing information out of a drunken sprite-he kidnaps Holly Short and uses her for ransom. The rest of the book is the fairy squad trying to get Holly out of there and not pay the ransom and Artemis has several plans to halt their advances until they finally comply. In the end he gets the gold (or half of it) and the fairy’s leave. It’s basically Die Hard but for a younger audience and it gave everything you needed for a film. You didn’t have to go big scale and fate of the world stuff or conspiracy. That’s later books like Artic Incident and the Opal Deception. Artemis as a calculating genius who has traces of humanity, that gets built upon as the series goes by, but he is a master planner and manipulator and troller even when he’s pretty much a good guy by the seventh book. For crying out loud, he sacrifices himself but has a contingency plan to come back to life in the last book.
So I will be judging this on two fronts: as an adaptation and as a film on its own. Because sometimes the films can be poor adaptations such as How to Train Your Dragon or Howl’s Moving Castle but can be good films on their own. So how does this film start? Well certainly not in Saigon where Artemis is making a deal/blackmail with a drunken fairy to get a book that contains most of the information they need to set up this ransom and it is in the trailer! Like I expect this from trailers but that is one of the biggest character plots of the film because it shows his resourcefulness, how formidable Butler is, and a small hint of his capability of humanity. Like he could have tried to kill the fairy and taken the book but is like-no need to take risks, just bargain for a few minutes to copy the book and we’ll cleanse you of your alcohol poising. Also the mother isn’t dead (seriously Disney ya CAN move away from the trope, it’s okay) she’s just in a delusional state because of the grief of losing her husband. And while she isn’t a major character she does come into play later especially at two points towards the end.
Ignoring that the film decides to go in the common tripe of making a story on a grander scale than it needs to be. It’s not just “hey a human is ransoming one of our kind for gold and we need to get them back without paying the ransom”. Instead this thing that doesn’t have a lot of explanation called the Aculos that supposedly has a ton of power that could be used to dominate both human and fairy worlds and a radical named Opal wants it. Honestly, what is wrong with a simple battle of wits between two forces and ultimately one will win. Artemis is no saint but there was enough likeably about him that you wanted to see if he would succeed. There are times when things blows up in his face, but he can work them to his advantage. Honestly I could go on how the changes they decided undermine a lot of what made the books solid (except maybe Atlantis Complex-it’s not some good scenes in it but its pretty average compared to the other books)
To the film itself, a lot of problems I have with it honestly are similar to Last Jedi. The pacing is all over the place and a lot of it feels a bit slideshow. The film drags on where it didn’t need to and not enough time where it had to be. Like we spend so much time on the whole Aculos thing that barely plays much of a part anyways. The film just felt slow. Not exactly boring but not enough to really have tense interest. Also, Artemis is a villain. He’s a smug, arrogant, intelligent, little troll who doesn’t respect anyone. Heck he doesn’t even acknowledge Holly until book 2. Look I know it’s this thing you’re doing making villains more misunderstood and all that but come on Disney-we know you are capable of better stuff than this. We know you’re capable of interesting villains. We know you’re better than this even at reinterpeitating books such as Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast. Also the whole sequel bait thing. I know it worked with Marvel but a lot of the first films worked because they focused on complete stories. If there happened to be a sequel it was a bonus. I suppose I should not have been entirely surprised but more disappointed than anything. Even the supposedly emotional moments feel more like slideshow checkpoints than actual scenes. Honestly the films feels like a paint by numbers fantasy film. My dad compared the thing to a more kid version of Men in Black and along the lines of Spy Kids. Which I would be fine with except the film doesn’t have the wit or the goofy charm those had. Heck, imagine if it had been directed by Robert Rodriguez. Like it would have been silly but at least it would have had a charming style to it even if it bombed.
Not everything in the film is awful. The designs are pretty decent if a little generic at times and mostly the characters looked like counterparts. I’m not like 100% miffed they made Butler black and I just made a damn pun joke-but he doesn’t feel as threatening as he should be. In the books he donned on a suit of armor and single handedly took down the troll. Kids will more or less like it, but it really isn’t for adults. It’s not as bad as Wrinkle in Time either. Honestly if I had to put it somewhere on the recent live action Disney films it’s just below Aladdin and above Maleficent. Like the elements are there but it need a far different team to handle it especially for something that has been in development hell for years.
Overall it’s okay for kids but pretty skippable for adults and I don’t see any sequels coming anytime soon. Until then I’m Noctina Noir and I am one Nox of a Nobody.

We know what Yang’s like when she wants to protect her loved ones, but what about protective Blake?
You mean when she isn’t trying to flee in a desperate attempt at keeping her loved ones safe? I kid, I kid. It really depends on the situation at hand. Like, from schoolyard shit to Srs Bsns fight time.Blake spent her entire formative years as a freedom fighter, and did you see how she roasted Weiss upon meeting? Queen of callout posts. Plus, she strikes ~from shadows~. She’s not a retaliatory prankster, but shes a saboteur for justice.
(Ruby is the baby of the team, and besides Yang, Blake is the most likely to dote on her in her own way. A book recommendation or letting her borrow one, bringing back some Really Good hot chocolate for Rubes when she’s getting herself tea, stuff like that. Totally not foreshadowing the fact that Blake would come to be her sister-in-law one day.
Its in the early days, and Weiss is still a little mean, with a much lower tolerance for Ruby’s actions than she would grow to have. Weiss snaps at her, perhaps a little too harshly. Their leader’s eyes water and her voice wavers. Weiss doesn’t notice. Thank goodness Yang wasn’t there to notice. Blake, peering over her book with half lidded eyes, definitely noticed. They never did find out who switched Weiss’ powdered coffee creamer with talcum powder from the gym. Yang has her suspicions, but Blake will never come forward. It’s not like her new team is growing on her or anything. Just something to stick it to the Schnee kid, y’know?)Combat school provides all sorts of avenues for avenging honor and retaliating with gusto. These kids trained their whole lives to fight Grimm, and have sparred with peers in controlled environments. Blake is the only one who knows how to put someone down, and keep them down til they stop moving.(Pyrrah’s partner-Blake still isn’t sure on the name- won’t leave Weiss alone. It’s been a few weeks into the semester and having him show up at their door trying to woo the heiress is already getting on her nerves. Glynda’s combat class would provide a good opportunity to put him in his place. That is, until she sees the way Pyrrah looks at him. “Oh,” Blake realizes. “Hes not malicious. Just dumb.” It takes a while. Blake has a learned mistrust of tall, noodley boys. Soon, however, Jaune becomes someone she trusts to protect her people.“Ice Queen is a little flat for me. But I think Red will fill out like her sister soon enough. Better get in on that now, right?” It’s at that moment that Blake Belladonna and Pyrrah Nikos form an unspoken agreement to thrash team CRDL at every opportunity)Things go on like that for nearly a year. She protects them, all of them, in her own way. Ruby and Weiss are small, and neither of them are really aware of the world(Ruby, thanks to youth and Yang’s efforts. Weiss, due to an isolated upbringing) Yang doesn’t need much watching out for. While Blake grew up mostly looking after herself, Yang grew up looking after everyone. They’re both self-sufficient. A nudge her, a warning, a cry of concern for her partner. Yang is, in her eyes, the very embodiment of strength.Stupid really. Yang never needed her protection. Yang needed her.(Then the day comes when it all comes crashing down. Beacon falls, and with it, the new world Blake was slowly building around her. She’s trying to put as much space between Adam and them. Her side is screaming in agony, her lungs are burning from the smoke, and all her weight is to one side as she carries Yang to safety. She doesn’t know when she blacked out from exhaustion and pain, doesn’t know she went down mere yards from the extraction point to get them all to safety. All she knows as she comes to is that someone is pulling Yang from her arms. Someone is taking Yang away, and her heightened senses fill her nostrils with the scent of a faunus who is not herself.Fear blind, and delirious from pain, Blake lashes out. Her eyes are golden, reflecting the fires still burning around them and standing out in the smoke clogged air. The cry she lets out is nothing like the roar her father is capable of, but it’d make any bobcat or lynx proud. The intent is clear. Mine, her rising growl says. Mine. Recognize that or die.Mate protectiveness, Sun will joke years later, when the pain and terror has faded enough to allow for jokes. She had struck him so hard he had nearly dropped Yang. What he doesn’t share, and what he’s sure Blake doesn’t remember, is how he had to carry them one at a time to the medical officers. How he had carried Yang first, and upon returning had found a wailing and delirious Blake, eyes near swollen shut from the smoke, crawling on the ground and lashing out at nothing. At everything. Sobbing, I’m sorry! and Give her back to me! He nearly had to knock her out himself to get her into the medical tent, and it took the help of Sage and Yatsuhashi to bring her in.Weiss wouldn’t show up until after the medical officer got them stable, and so Sun stood guard til then. He’s the only one who remembers.)

Green: Part Three
“AJ, we’re here.”
They’ve arrived at the hotel, but AJ’s fallen asleep in the car, head flopped towards Shane, mouth slack, short hair soft and tufted without the cap covering it up. If there wasn’t a valet standing by Shane’s open window silently willing them to hurry up and get out, Shane might take the time to watch the other man quietly snoring in his car for a few minutes, try to memorise his face and figure out why he likes looking at it so much before they part ways for good. But there’s no time.
“AJ,” Shane shakes him by the shoulder gently. “We’re here.“ AJ squirms a little in his sleep, body resisting waking up.
Shane squeezes AJ’s shoulder, seeing his eyelids move in response. "Hey. Here we are, AJ. Wake up now.”
AJ gives a little snort and opens his eyes, looking so confused Shane feels a wave of tenderness rush over him. But there’s no time for that either.
“Sorry, baby – gotta get out of the car now, can’t sleep in here,” he whispers.
AJ blinks, blue eyes bright, and sighs, still looking fuzzy and confused.
“Already?” he grumbles back, voice scratchy with sleep.
“Yep. This is it.”
AJ frowns, still not quite with it. “So soon.”
He sounds sad. He must really enjoy sleeping in cars.
“Not that soon. You slept for a while.”
AJ closes his eyes again. “Dang.“
“Hey, up you get now – can sleep in your room,” Shane says, gently nudging his shoulder again, noticing how warm and good he feels, then making himself take his hand away.
“We’re not sharing?” AJ asks, rubbing his eyes with his knuckles.
“No,” Shane laughs, enjoying the lack of filter AJ has when he’s still halfway in dreamland.
“I booked you your own room when you were ordering the food earlier. You don’t have to share.”
AJ frowns some more, thinking.
“I’m hungry.”
“Again?”
The valet at his door is getting antsy, so Shane figures he better speed up getting AJ out of the car already instead of trying to selfishly soak up more seconds with him when he’s like this, close-up and quiet.
“How about this; I’ll do you a deal. There’s a restaurant in there. I’ll point you towards the food if you wake up now?”
The other man grumbles while stretching, blinking to awareness and reaching for the door. “Okay. But it ain’t my fault your conversation put me to sleep."
“Still sassing me when you’re tired, huh?” Shane shakes his head, smiling even though he’s starting to feel sadness creep in. “What did I tell you about that mouth?”
“Find me somethin’ bad that tastes good and I’ll stop giving you a hard time,” AJ shoots back with a big toothy grin, putting his cap back on and pulling himself out of the car.
Shane’s got himself more time, just a little more before it’s over.
***
AJ’s dipping his fries into ketchup, elbow up on the table so he can lean over his plate, table manners forgotten. Shane’s amazed he can fill his stomach with such greasy trash again so soon. He’s all checked into his room– was still a little fuzzy and quiet when they were at the front desk, so no last minute griping over allowing someone else do something for him. Just silent acceptance of his room key while rubbing the back of his neck and yawning. Then a smile when Shane pointed out the hotel restaurant.
Shane wasn’t hungry, but AJ’d insisted on buying him a drink at least before he went up to his own room for the evening. “Come watch me eat,” he’d said. Shane wasn’t going to turn that offer down, no matter how much AJ talks with his mouth full. Shane’s sitting back in the booth with a beer, and watching AJ demolish his meal. The boy jams three fries into the side of his mouth, chewing with his mouth open and talking through it.
“You sure you don’t wanna eat? You can eat offa my plate, you don’t want a whole meal – I don’t mind sharin’.”
“And risk you biting at my fingers, with how fast you’re working through that? No way, I’m staying over here where it’s safe.”
AJ pretends to be insulted. “You sayin’ I’m a pig?”
“I’m saying I respect your speed.”
“Well, thank you,“ AJ says, tipping his cap. Hasn’t taken that back off to eat. "So… I’m guessin’ you’re up in the luxury penthouse suite or somethin’ right?” He teases, licking ketchup from his full bottom lip.
Shane gets snagged on that sight for a second. “Hmm? Oh, uh, no – not quite the penthouse. But one of the upper floors, yes.”
“How long you stayin’?”
“My business here is pretty much done, probably flying back out tomorrow, too.”
“And you live in New York?”
“Yes. And you’re in Gainesville for now?”
“Uh huh.” He looks down at his plate, using his tongue to clean his teeth. “You ever find yourself down that way?”
“Not really. Haven’t had much of a reason to.“ Shane desperately wishes he could come up with one, but that’s a bad route to go down.
“You could come and see one of my shows, if you’re ever in the same town,” AJ says, grabbing a napkin to wipe at his face.
Shane smiles at the impossible offer, and AJ not giving up on his dream. “Which shows do you work, then?”
AJ grins back at him and clears his throat, crumpling up the napkin. “Do a lot with CWF in Texas; Christian promotion, that one.“
“Oh, right – Matt mentioned that. How does that work; the wrestlers have to be Christian?”
“You been asking the trainers about me?” AJ smirks, eyes lighting up.
Shane splutters a bit, caught out. “Ah, well…”
AJ lets him off the hook on that one and answers the question.
“Yeah, kind of have to be believers to wrestle there. We testify a bunch between the matches, that kind of thing.”
“And you’re comfortable with that?”
AJ sits up in his seat, resting his hands on the table in front on him. “Well, sure. I’m proud of my faith, it keeps me on the right path. And if I can share that with people who might be struggling with where their path is leadin’ them, I’m doin’ a good thing.”
With how much he likes to talk, Shane bets AJ’s good at testifying. He wishes he could go and see him give his speeches about faith in that slightly raspy voice.
“Maybe you should be a preacher instead of a wrestler…” he says, taking a drink of his beer, keeping eye contact with the other man.
“You think I should give up on the wrestling?” AJ asks, joking along, but his eyes are a little wary again, remembering why they’re in the hotel together tonight; not getting his NXT contract. Shane wants to kick himself for making the joke.
“Never give up on wrestling. I’m serious. Don’t let this set you back; keep pushing. You’ll get there. I saw you, remember? You’re special.“ Shane quickly grabs his glass again and takes another drink, wishing he hadn’t let that last part out, hoping it wasn’t too much to say out loud. He really means it. For the wrestling, but he sure doesn’t want AJ picking up on the rest as well. He just needs to get himself through this; get AJ in his own room and settled for the night, then move on. Without having freaked the poor guy out, without having made himself look like a fool. He’s here to do right.
AJ’s stopped eating and he’s just looking back at Shane, taking in what he’s being told, looking like he really cares about Shane’s opinion. Gives a small nod, accepting the words in, starts rubbing at the table with a finger, looking down at it.
“That means a lot to me, you sayin’ that,” And then quieter, still aimed towards the table, “You’re a good man you know, Shane.”
It’s like he’s been punched. "Thank you.” He needs to get it back to playful, chest feeling tight. “You just need to, I don’t know… cut out all the junk food.”
AJ drops the serious mood, starts laughing, looking at Shane in happiness. "Ha! I don’t need another daddy you know, you can’t tell me what to do. Makin’ a man feel beholden to you for being so kind to ‘im is one thing…” he says.
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“I know,” AJ nods, sitting back in the booth in a sprawl and looking down at his lap. “But, thank you."
"And you bought me this drink here,” Shane reminds him, tapping his glass and bringing AJ’s eyes back up to his. “Which I needed after listening to your snoring in the car.”
“I don’t snore!”
“You do.”
“Nuh-uh; no way.”
“No one ever told you that before? You really get going after a while – I couldn’t hear my terrible music anymore at one point.”
“Ha, then I did you a favour, didn’t I? Anyway, I’m a good Christian boy, remember? No one’s been that close to hear me snore.”
“Lucky for them. Not so lucky for me.”
AJ throws his napkin at Shane.
“Now who should watch their mouth, huh?”
Shane’s getting caught up in the grinning and mischief and needs to pull himself back before he starts throwing things at AJ to make him sit up further and smile wider. He gestures to the half-full plate.
“You done already? Don’t want the rest of that?”
“Nah, I wasn’t really that hungry,” AJ says, calming back down.
“What? You said you were. Lying to me already…” Shane tuts.
“Aww, now I only did that because I wanted you to sit with me a while more,” he says, leaning further forward and twisting his mouth up in a repressed grin.
“That so?”
“That is indeed so – didn’t want to go up to the room yet."
"Just avoiding boredom, huh – not wanting my fantastic company? Well, that hurts."
“Your company’s okay, Shane.”
“Being with you is a rollacoaster, AJ,” Shane answers, raising his glass and finishing the last of his drink. Now’s the time, nothing left to keep them here anymore. “I guess we’re done, then – you ready to go?”
AJ looks hesitant for a second. “Yeah, sure. I’ll settle up here – would you take my bag and wait by the elevators for me, though?”
“Yes, Sir.”
***
The goodbye had been both worse than Shane had anticipated, but better than he’d feared. He hadn’t slipped AJ his number and begged him to call him, for one thing. But it felt like being torn away from something he really needed. So now he’s up in his room, drinking something strong from the minibar and replaying the so long, nice to meet you, best of luck, no worries about the room, have a good flight, have a nice life, over and over.
He’d waited by the elevators with AJ’s bag, trying to fight the sick feeling that was growing. Watched AJ loping towards him from the restaurant a few minutes later, smiling but looking a bit nervous and awkward as well. Out of place in the lobby in the sleeveless shirt, his eyes half hidden by his hat. Didn’t seem to be noticing his surroundings though, just looking back with his hands in his back pockets.
“So,” he’d said on a sigh, stopping in front of Shane. “I guess this is it then, huh?”
“I guess it is.” Their eyes were getting snagged up again somehow, Shane having to break it. AJ seemed sort of lost, but trying to look cheery. Not doing the best job, but if cheery is what he wanted, Shane would follow his lead.
“Here’s your bag – you’re on the seventeenth floor, right?”
“And you’re on…” AJ’d made to look at Shane’s keycard while taking his bag back, making him hold it up and show him the number, “…not on the seventeenth floor, uh huh.”
“Told you it wasn’t the penthouse. Here’s the elevator, room for us.”
“Shane,” AJ’d quickly grabbed his arm while they got on, pulling him next to him so they’d be standing together in the group of people getting on.
He’d started talking fast, head tipped back slightly to catch Shane’s eyes because of the height difference. “Thank you for today, seein’ me right-”
Shane had stopped him. “Don’t. You don’t have to thank me.” AJ’d sighed, rubbing the back of his neck and flushing with something, looking frustrated. “AJ – Just keep on going, promise me? Promise me I’ll see you wrestling again one day? On TV next time, right?”
AJ’d shifted back a little, taking a breath; calming himself down again. “You will,” he’d nodded; resolved. “I promise.”
“Good. Good. Now here’s your stop – go get some sleep, get ready for that flight tomorrow.” Shane couldn’t stop the eye-contact, seeing how panicked AJ suddenly looked, feeling it in his chest as well. He had to say something of what AJ’d given him that day.
“It was really, really nice to meet you.”
“It was really nice meeting you too,” AJ had said in a deeper voice, taking Shane’s hand and squeezing it in a strong shake, before letting go to step through the opening doors, turning to look back. Maybe he’d caught how sad Shane was, because he’d poked his tongue out at him at the last second, making him laugh when the doors closed and the car started moving up again.
And that was it.
Shane looks at his glass of whisky and decides he’ll sleep in late tomorrow, sleep through AJ leaving the hotel so he won’t be tempted to run out to find him again. Because why? What good would it do? He did well – he did right today.
A good daddy-type figure, isn’t he, looking after the younger boys in the business, he thinks, shaking his head to himself and taking another stinging swallow. That’s who he is. A dad, a husband. A mentor, an old guy. Maybe that’s why AJ was looking at him so trusting, so interested in talking to him. Maybe AJ needed that today, someone older and wiser to talk to. It’s all a lie though; AJ doesn’t know what’s in his head. And thank Christ for that.
The other stuff, Shane’ll battle through and beat himself up about in private. Maybe… maybe he’ll give watching gay porn a go sometime. Beat himself off to it. Maybe he should watch some young, muscled, wholesome-looking guys doing bad things to each other and hate himself for it afterwards. There must be websites for married men who’ve found themselves suddenly lusting for younger guys and need a private release that won’t tear their family apart.
What would AJ think of him if he knew? Saying Shane’s a ‘good man’ earlier – he’s not a good man. He’s tried. But that’s not going to last. He’s filled with disgusting thoughts about what he’d do to AJ if he had the chance, it’s all there in his head, waiting to be thought and obsessed about. It’ll all come flooding in if he lets it – but he can’t let it tonight, when AJ’s in the same hotel thinking he’s such a nice man.
His skin is prickling with need, but he’ll ignore it. Maybe tomorrow. Probably tomorrow. Right now, he’ll get to bed, get some sleep, and hope he doesn’t dream.
***
He’s woken up by a rapping on his hotel door, noise travelling through the entrance to the bedroom and the suite beyond it. He feels like he’s had no sleep at all, but if housekeeping’s here, he must have had his fill. He gets up and straightens the pants and loose t-shirt he’s been sleeping in and pads across the soft carpet to open the door and ask for more time. But it doesn’t feel like morning, it’s too quiet.
When he opens the door, it turns out he’s right. Time hasn’t ticked over until tomorrow yet.
AJ’s standing in front of him, still in his clothes – looking harried and flicking his eyes down the corridors, rubbing a hand through his hair.
“Uh, sorry to wake you...” Stress is radiating off of him and Shane goes into panic mode.
“AJ, you okay? You alright, what’s wrong – something happened-”
“No. No, nothing’s happened. I just, oh God-“ he cuts off and steps from foot to foot, looking down the corridor again, and breathing heavy, lifting his hands up behind his head, face creasing up in worry about something. Then his eyes take in what Shane’s wearing.
“So that’s what you wear to bed, huh?” he struggles out, hands still clasping at the back of his head, chest rising up and down rapidly.
“What? Uh, yeah… it’s comfortable…” AJ came up to talk about his sleep wear? What’s going on? “What did you think I’d wear to bed?”
“I dunno,” AJ shakes his head quickly. “Matching PJs, or somethin’? Hadn’t thought about it. Oh God, what am I doin’,” he huffs out, bending over and putting his hands on his knees, sucking in breath.
“AJ, stop – it’s okay, it’ll be okay, come here,” Shane assures him, reaching out to gently pull him upright again, try and get him to come in and sit down. But as soon as he touches a shoulder, AJ’s breath hitches and Shane finds himself with his arms full of him instead.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa; okay, here, take it easy – it’s okay. It’s okay,” Shane soothes, rubbing his hand down AJ’s back and closing the door behind him. The boy isn’t letting go, seems to need the contact right now. His height means his face is pressed into the side of Shane’s neck, and his breathing is laboured, like he’s trying not to let something out. Shane can’t feel tears, but the rasping sobs being held in tells him they’re coming. It’s not like a boy needing a father figure, but more like a man who needs comfort from someone he’d connected with today, someone he trusts. So Shane holds him tight and rocks him, rubbing his back some more, murmuring into his ear.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. I know it’s hard; I know. It’ll be okay. You don’t have to worry, okay?” AJ lets out a little noise against his neck, taking deep breaths to calm down, grasping Shane harder around his shoulders.
“It’ll come,” Shane says softly against his hair. “It didn’t today, but it’ll come.”
AJ shifts in his arms, and Shane lets their faces rub against each other, lets his skin be a comfort. It’s when AJ moves his head and grazes the corner of his mouth against Shane’s, short eyelashes fluttering against his cheek, that Shane figures out what kind of comfort AJ came to find him for.

Hi friends! I am feeling so thankful because we can now count on ONE HAND how many treatments I have left... FIVE more weeks/rounds to go!!! Praise Jesus! I feel great! #happydance
In the perfect timing that comes only from the Lord, our women's ministry began a new fall Bible study over the book of Job by Lisa Harper; it is a seven week study & when we started up, I had seven weeks of chemo left! How sweet to wrap up these chemo rounds studying a book about finding unlikely joy in the midst of suffering... suffering that isn't even comprehend-able for me. My suffering in comparison to Job's is literally a drop in a bucket.
With that in mind daily & with the excitement of seeing even more slivers of light at the end of this tunnel, edging closer, I thought it would be fun to reflect on my favorite parts of cancer. Yes -- favorite! In such a crazy turn of events from the diagnosis in April, as we carry on now, this has been such an incredible blessing. I fully believe gratefulness in the midst of the journey has been a huge part of my healing. So, without further ado: lists of my top 3 favorites, cancer edition!
Top 3 favorite: head coverings
Nothing. Way more people than I would have originally wanted have seen my bald head because hello, it's been a hot Arkansas summer, & I actually like showing off my teeny tiny hair growth to anyone who wants to see!
Baseball caps -- in particular my simple breast cancer baseball cap that was a gift from my bestie, Natalie. Pretty sure I wear it at least 3-4 days of the week, but it's neat how many conversations that one hat has sparked because it answers the pressing question everyone has when they notice my bald head, wondering what cancer I have. So many new survivor friends now!
Multicolor/turquoise scarf from my fellow breastie, Savanah. This was her favorite headwrap during her journey & I think she seasoned it up just perfectly for me because it is truly the only headwrap I feel comfortable/happy in. It's like the scarf just knows how to make a bald girl feel a little better! ;)
Top 3 favorite: perks of having a bald (but really now a "fuzzy") head
I can get ready in under 10 minutes!
I walk out of the shower & have dry hair in quite literally no time.
Back in the day, straightening my hair was no simple task & I certainly don't miss all that time in front of a mirror, but I also can't wait for the day I get to turn my straightener back on! #lovehaterelationship
Top 3 favorite: things about the St. B's Cancer Center
My NURSES... unbelievably precious humans that I actually get excited to see weekly. I am so blessed to have our sweet Aunt Sandra looking out for me like no other; she loves like I'm her own & has been the absolute best caretaker. Plus, so many other sweet folks have brightened my days & have taken top-notch care of me. I don't want to forget their names one day -- Mandy, Jyl, Mr. Jack, Tasha, & such a kind volunteer, Ms. Dorothy.
I've had a wonderful oncologist, Dr. Durrani, but my PA, Callie, is someone I have grown to think of as a friend -- she's just a friend that talks cancer with me! And fun fact: we're only four days apart, so to have someone relate-able & my age walking with me through this has been quite the comfort.
The hours spent in those recliners inside the infusion room have been truly priceless. I have cherished conversations with my “chemo buddies” each week. Between my husband, Mom, Dad, & Gran (plus a few new chemo buddies coming up in my last few rounds!), I have loved the catch-up sessions with those I love the most!
Top 3 favorite: things about my Riverside family since diagnosis
My kids. Cancer or no cancer, I love my kids. The love, compassion, & respect has been unmatched by both my Jr. High & Sr. High students. The world could use way more kids like the ones I am honored to teach.
The family I work with on the daily. Something that many don't know is the fact that the sweet, sweet faculty & staff have all been providing dinners three nights a week for my family. Three nights a week, y'all. There is a care calendar in place where we have been provided for since the beginning of the school year until my treatments wrap up in early October. How humbling to have so many people spend time & effort to lovingly prepare a meal or provide a gift card to make our lives easier... I will never forget the generosity & support shown by those I am blessed to work alongside.
Mr. Priest, Mr. Ziegler, Mr. Durham, & Mrs. Priest -- my administration has gone above & beyond with their support. There hasn't been a moment when I had to put my health on the back burner; they have been so encouraging & willing to stand in the gap for me to ensure I can be back to 100% when I am ready & able.
Top 3 favorite: Scriptures since diagnosis
My go-to & the reference on my Team Erin bracelets: “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
This past Wednesday night, a sweet friend, Nicole Arbuckle, prayed Psalm 57 over our Bible study & gracious, it was good... so good. I loved verse 1, "Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in you. I will seek refuge in the shadow of your wings until danger passes."
Top 3 favorite: funny moments since diagnosis
Meeting Chris Harrison at the FedEx St. Jude Classic & he thought I was a St. Jude patient. I told him that aged me backwards 10+ years so I would gladly take that "compliment" of sorts!
Elly holds onto my head & we both giggle when she does as I get her dressed in the mornings. :)
Ryan cracks jokes about my bald head & people legitimately have no idea how to react! Example: "Oh yeah, last time you met her she probably had hair but she definitely doesn't now!" *cue awkward laughter* So funny every time!
Top 3 favorite: lessons learned since diagnosis
Embrace the spontaneity. Random ice cream runs with Elly & Ryan. Living in the moment & not fretting so much over what's next, whether that be a big life change or just a simple monkey wrench thrown in an evening plan. Texting your best friend at 2pm that the Backstreet Boys are in town that night & somehow making the arrangement to go & dance way past your bedtime at the very last minute. Modifying & adjusting in the classroom, on the spot, because lesson plans aren't realistic every single day. Y'all, this idea of spontaneity just never came natural & not to say I'm so great at it now, but I sure am learning that some of the sweetest/best memories live in the unplanned moments.
Trust Jesus. He is good. He has a plan that rivals no other plan I could make for myself. Know that every single moment in stormy seasons is worth it, is purposeful, & I pray will be used to glorify Him. There is NO way I could walk this walk without Jesus living in me & walking in-step with me.
Savor the days. I have spent 28 years of life truly sweating the small stuff, as the cliché goes. Cancer sure knows how to strip that away & has served as a reminder these past five months that time is far too short & fleeting to waste my days. This has been the greatest perspective shift I could have ever hoped for & never knew I needed. Gratitude has truly washed over me & fortunately, I will never be the same.
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I praise Him with my song." Psalm 28:7
All my love from my pink chapter, Erin

Can having your car insurance cancelled lower your credit score?
"Can having your car insurance cancelled lower your credit score?
My friend just talked to some other people that have the same card (Cabela's Visa) and they had the same thing happen to them. They all have good credit and pay all their bills on time and usually in full, but Cabela's dropped their credit limits drastically. I think it is just Cabela's. Thanks to everyone that answered anyway. It turned out to be a whole different issue.

""Silly car insurance cost, why so much?
I am a 40 year old woman who is taking my driving test next week. I have run through some quotes for a car (nothing flash or sporty) and the cheapest I can find is 1450 fully comp. I thought this was some kind of joke but it appears to be true. Why is it so much? I'm not a young person but this has priced me out of affording a car for the foreseeable future. I've just wasted 4 months learning. Why on earth is it so much and why are they getting away with it? It would be cheaper to take the risk and get a fine if I was unlucky enough to be stopped surely? Not going to do that before anyone gets on their high horse but just saying.

Insurance company denies the damages?
my car has been involved in an rear end crash and the insurance company of the other party denies some of the damages , that are actually done because of the accident. the auto body shop gave me an estimate of 4 to 5 000 $ . my car doesnot cost that much . the insurance company is offering only 633 $ and disagrees with me to total the car . there was no damage prior to the accident made to the car on the rear end side. they argue that the other car that hit me does not have even a dent then how come my car have this much damages. i know that my car did not had n e damage on the rear before the accidednt. based on the automobile source they think that the actual cash value of the car is 1900 , and they have didcted all other damges , that are not because of an accident. please guide me what i should do in this case.""

Why is our group health insurance so much more expensive than getting an individual plan privately?
My husband gets insurance through his work, and they take out $170 a week (he gets paid weekly). So that totals about $730 a month for us and our kids plus maternity benefits. What confuses me is if we were to drop that insurance and get an individual plan with the same company, same deductible, same co-pay, including maternity benefits (exactly the same plan) it would run us about $440 a month. I thought that the whole point of getting on a group plan was that it would be cheaper. I would be okay with it being the same as private but it makes absolutely zero sense to me that it would be almost twice as much... Anybody want to explain? Or are they just screwing us over?""

Insurance totalling my car looks suspicious?
At this point I regret making a claim and wish i could turn back the clock. I am being forced into a box and it looks shady. Three weeks ago my 2005 Cadillac STS was involved in a parking lot flood where the water rose and filled the floors of my car by about 4 inches. All us neighbors had cleaning parties using a wet vac and baking and toweling are cars in the sun over the next few days letting our vehicles dry out. On my car everything works like a dream as it did before with the exception of a 'check stability control' notice that comes on when I start the car. I have been driving the car fine since the flood and decided maybe I should make a claim to fix this error that pops up on the dash when i start the car. From the time I dropped it off at the dealer it has been all negative. Right away the dealer was negative and telling me it's the end of the world with my car, everything is ruined and it will probably be a total loss. He got the adjuster for my insurance company out there and it looks like it will be put in to the total loss category. No i am just asking the insurance company to forget everything and drop the claim because the damage is not that extreme and i dont want to lose my car. I am told at this point it is too late. Is that true? My neighbors are floored by this, i have been driving it around for a few weeks just fine and the car still looks new With only 62000 miles on it. I can't help from thinking that something suspicious is going on here. Do they stand to make a nice profit by totalling my vehicle and then replacing one module for a 1000 or so and having a perfect car with all systems working? Also the lady from the claims office said the car had to be 80% damaged for it to be a total loss. I asked her if this was based on speculative problems that they think may occur in the future because of the water, or based on actual damage now? She said it had to be actual damage now but couldn't give me any details from the adjuster yet. Can I demand that the adjuster list everything that he thinks has been damaged to my car (which I am convinced he will have to be creative to do so)? The car as i said drives wonderful, I checked the fluids on my own (fine), and the car looks new. Do I have any recourse here? I just want the car fixed for the one problem, i dont want to lose the car, and at this point I don't even care about having insurance fix the one problem, but again I am told it is too late to go backwards and drop this entire issue. I almost have an inclination to report this because it looks so shady. No reasonable person would look at, and drive this car and consider it a total loss. What is the agenda of the insurance company and cadillac dealer here? Something smells foul with this situation.""

Help with insurance claim on exotic sports car?
My car ---an exotic sports model--- was damaged in a parking lot collision tonight. (My car was parked and struck by a guy who wasn't looking ahead.) Even if a 100% repair can be effected, the value of the car will be forever diminished because of the car's blemished history. People who buy these cars simply will not pay top dollar if the history shows any sort of collision repair. Of course the other guy's insurance is not going to want to give me an extra few grand to cover my eventual loss. What can I do to be covered? Would I have to sue for something like that? She doesn't have a steady job yet but she's starting college at hcc this fall. She's living with her mom right now. The downfall is that she's already gotten a speeding ticket and hasn't had insurance for 6 or 7months. She needs a non-'name-brand' auto insurance. The cheapest offer so far was $406 a month and she can't afford that. By the way..this is in florida. Can you please inform me of a cheap car insurance place? It doesn't have to be any good..just cheap...thankyou..

DUI in CA - how much will my car insurance go up?
I was convicted of a DUI and soon I'll be eligible for a resticted license. I have to have an ignition interlock device installed, and file an SR-22 with my insurance company (Anchor General Insurance). I have not told them yet as I am not yet eligible. I called and they said that they do accept people with DUIs. I am currently paying $77 per month for full coverage. I'm male, 29 years old. How much can I expect my insurance cost to rise once I file the SR-22?""

Can having your car insurance cancelled lower your credit score?
My friend just talked to some other people that have the same card (Cabela's Visa) and they had the same thing happen to them. They all have good credit and pay all their bills on time and usually in full, but Cabela's dropped their credit limits drastically. I think it is just Cabela's. Thanks to everyone that answered anyway. It turned out to be a whole different issue.
