Formula 1: Drive to Survive, S1:E4 “The Art of War”

...And they’re not talking about Sun Tzu...because that bridge burning is gonna bite Red Bull in the ass haaaaard...

This is honestly my and my sister’s absolute favourite episode of DTS.  We’ve rewatched this episodes so many times just to watch the drama of Christian vs. Cyril, the schadenfreude, the divorce with the shock custody agreement... I think this is probably the best episode in the entire series. There is truly nothing else like the press conferences, the confrontations or the petty revenge in this episode with its reality TV camera zooms picking up all the emotions.

There is something ironic about Christian Horner gleefully telling us that if you can't stand the heat of F1 politics, you should get out when you later see him completely blindsided by Daniel leaving Red Bull. I think you can only truly be blindsided if you really had the arrogance to believe that someone couldn't see the perverbial writing on the wall with how they were favouring Max over Daniel. And someone who had been with Red Bull for so long knows how it works, knows how being supplanted looks like.

One of the best things about Drive to Survive is the profiling of the team principals and there is truly nothing better than the petty bitterness between Christian and Cyril in the Red Bull-Renault engine divorce. Seeing Cyril snipe just as hard as Christian is hilarious with his Red Bull is a great brand... to drink.

Seeing Daniel be so happy for his birthday and then have that juxtaposed with a DNF on said day was ouch. No want Sad Badger. He does all this work and then his engine craps out. They make it worse by showing him with his dad and talking to his mom. On the other hand, it's touching to see he's got such a close relationship with his family.

I remember the first time I saw this episode and just the disbelief that F1 will hold press conferences with the jilter and the jiltee at the same table. It’s absolutely absurd and it has the MOST. AMAZING. DRAMA. Like...this is probably the ONLY time you see Christian Horner completely at a loss with nothing to say, knowing that he’s lost to his arch nemesis, Squirrel Irritable, after his smug arrogance prior.

The awkward moments they capture where Cyril won't even look at Christian is hilarious and so immature. I love it. My sister and I have wondered if Cyril knew Daniel was joining Renault at that point, because it would put such a different spin on things. Because he's not wrecked by the news, unlike Christian later on. But then again, he's got other customer teams on contract at that point.

Interestingly, Christian Horner really has a history of manipulating narrative to make others look weak. He says that Renault were desperate even last week to have Red Bull on the books. He says that Cyril is emotional and you never know what you're gonna get. We all know his classic line that Daniel was running from a fight with Max...But I think Christian Horner has a good read on people and knows exactly what to do and say to get the results the higher ups want. He's says these things when he knows his subjects can't or won't hit back. He's also willing to do whatever it takes even if it goes against his values. He swings the way the higher ups dictate which is why he's stayed team principal longer than any of the others on the grid. So he's probably more of a pawn than he realizes.

In contrast, I think some of Daniel's best assets is his humour, kindness and ability to make people like him and want to see him succeed. And those qualities were probably very useful to help him survive Red Bull and be extremely marketable. But those characteristics can also make others underestimate and take advantage of you for their own purposes. Something Red Bull were clearly trying to do by making him a very expensive second driver. (This is why Alex's situation hurts so much because they didn't allow him time to make alternative arrangements in FE etc, so he's got no choice but to be the reserve driver, where Red Bull can take advantage of him already knowing the car and have Checo too.) Knowing Red Bull's future and the way they treat drivers makes Daniel's switch to Renault soooo satisfying and the ultimate fuck you.

I also think that Daniel is quite perceptive and really avoided throwing the team dynamics of Red Bull under the bus in order to preserve the relationships and future opportunities, something Christian knows he can exploit. Like Daniel says he left for the change and to create his own future, but saying he wants to be somewhere happy and that he's leaving Max enough space is kinda telling both literally and figuratively. Not to mention Hawkish dude saying they wanted to go where he was wanted...

Cyril, watching Daniel overtake the Renaults in Hungary: I want that. My sister and I always joke that Renault's bigger budget went entirely into Daniel's paycheque. Get that French taxpayer money.

Also, they couldn't make Max look more like a whiney kid with his whole "I don't care if it blows up!" tantrum.

I knew Daniel would leave Red Bull as soon as I saw the water. But my sister loooooves to bring up my "What!? He's going to Renault?!" screech the first time I saw this episode because they do such a good job of showing how shitty the engine was so it just seemed impossible he'd do that. DTS really got me there lol. They also do such a great job just showing how long Daniel had been at Red Bull and how hard it was to leave.

Mostly, I love the ending of this episode and the total shift of fortune for Red Bull and Renault. It's just such poetic justice and simply art.

I find Daniel skulking in the parking garage hilarious. I've watched soooooo many k-dramas and bad things always happen in an underground parkade, so I half expected him to get jumped lol.

And Schadenfreude the Press Conference with the other journalists eating it up? *chef's kiss* There is nothing better than seeing Christian Horner at a loss for words with egg on his face being served a big slice of humble pie.

Best drama. Best (self- inflicted) Red Bull drama. Best twist.

So in front of a 1/3 capacity Osaka-Jo Hall, New Japan produced their annual Dominion show, and it was an... interesting show to say the least. The undercard was your standard NJPW show; Yuji Nagata submitted Gabriel Kidd with Nagata Lock II at 9:25 of a fun six man opener. Hiromu lead the charge in the next match, looking better than anyone else bar Ishii. His exchanges with Tsuji were really good too, before he submitted the Young Lion with a Boston Crab to end an entertaining 10 minuter. El Desperado pinned Yuya Uemura with Pinche Loco to end another decent six man next. The post match saw Kanemaru put the boots to Master Wato, so that seems to be The Grandmaster’s next feud. They certain don’t have many aspirations for him at this point. Saying that, I suppose every promotion needs their dependable mid-carders. Speaking of which, the inexplicable Yujiro push continued in the next match, as he pinned Goto to end a painfully average match. Okada came out with his neck taped, and I don’t know if he’s selling or what, but he looked really off here. As Goto hit Ushigoroshi on Takahashi, Gedo came out and attacked Okada’s ribs with a wrench outside, taking him out of the match. Goto went for GTR on Yujiro, but Ishimori broke it up with a Lungblower, followed by Bloody Cross, allowing Yujiro to score the pin at 9:42 with Pimp Juice. He then laid Okada out with it in the post match. I understand pickings are slim in this time of pandemic, and they always have decent outings together, but I really do not need to see a Yujiro/Okada programme in 2020. This year has been rough enough.

Things really picked up after intermission as Shingo defended the NEVER Title against long-time rival SHO. This, as expected, was an excellent 20 minute war, with both guys looking great. There were no surprises here; both guys slammed into each other like bulls with hard Lariats, forearms, chops and suplexes. SHO worked over Shingo’s Lariat arm with hard kicks and Jujigatame attempts, but the champion would power out. After a back and forth exchange of Lariats, SHO hits a headkick on Takagi for the double down. A sliding Lariat and Noshigami scores a near fall for Shingo. SHO hits the powerbomb on the knees, and a huge Lariat, but Takagi kicks at one, then SHO scores another great near fall with the deadlift German. A flurry of elbows from the Rampage Dragon leaves SHO open to Made In Japan, which gets a near fall, then the challenger kicks at one from a Pumping Bomber. SHO scores another near fall with a cross arm piledriver, then Takagi turns another Jujigatame into a Death Valley Bomb, hits the draping GTR, then successfully defends the title after hitting Last Of The Dragon at 20:07. This was by far the best thing on the show, and whilst great stuff indeed, the finish was never really in any doubt, as SHO got the win in the NJC, so had to return the favour here because New Japan loves the 50/50 booking. As Shingo celebrated his win, El Desperado attacked and posed with the title. That interesting, at first glance that match doesn’t seem too awe inspiring, but I’m sure they’ll actually have a great match.

The Tag Title match that followed was a really good match, but at 28:43, it was much too long (little did I know). It must also be said, it feels like these teams have been feuding for years, as it started in February, which might as well have been half a decade ago at this point. The champions came out aggressive, attacking the challengers before the bell and hitting duelling pescados, but after the hot start, this tapered off a bit for my liking, as Taichi heeled it up in slo-mo fashion, and began choking Tana with a tag rope or something, as my eyelids grew heavy. This picked up again as Ibushi got a hot tag, flying in with a springboard dropkick, but he was ground to a halt as ZSJ caught him in a knee bar. Ibushi and Taichi exchange hard kicks, culminating in Taichi hitting the Kawada Dangerous High Kick. Ibushi avoids an Axe Bomber, but gets caught in a Stretch Plumb, which Tanahashi breaks up with a Dragon Sleeper. The champions hit their new Golden Blade move to both challengers. As they battled on, Tana tried a Sling Blade on Taichi, but he counters into the Dangerous Backdrop, but Tanahashi reverses it into a Sling Blade. The Ace takes Zack out with Sling Blade, then goes up for the HFF, but Sabre gets the knees up. Taichi takes Ibushi out with the dreaded Iron Fingers From Hell(!!!), but Tana ducks, only to run straight into a Daaaaangerous Backdrop. From there, the challengers destroy Tanahashi’s already destroyed knees, as Taichi holds him and Zack hits numerous Dragon Screws. Tana’s selling here was sublime and the move itself looks tremendous. ZSJ hoists Tanahashi up into the Zack Driver, with Taichi giving a superkick assist, resulting in Zack getting the three count, and new champions are crowned.

Then the main event. There’s an old saying: “Go big or go home”, and Gedo certainly did that here. Look, as much as I don’t really have a problem with the outcome; they need new stars in this time and they aren’t especially spoilt for choice, but this match had some pretty major problems. Not the least that it went on FOREVER and relied entirely on absolute fuckery. At 38 minutes, this was insanely long, and it really didn’t need to be. When Naito won the titles at Wrestle Kingdom, part of me had dreaded his reign, as he just physically isn’t really up to it at this point, and to mask this, I figured his matches would have all kinds of smoke and mirrors. However, both this and the KENTA defence from February had a preposterous amount of interference, to the point it really just takes you out of these matches. Now, EVIL getting the super-push makes sense; he’s a home grown star, and heavyweight to boot, and the LIJ guys are so beloved they really need a believable aggressor for them, but I’m not too sure about how they went about all of this. 

EVIL came out with new music and new gear. He’s dropped the guyliner, but is decked out in a leather grass skirt gimmick that I believe should be cast into a dumpster. EVIL lived up to his name by destroying Milano Collection AT’s old EVIL scythe toy gimmick, which caused the commentary megastar to jump the rail, only to be immediately thrown into it. EVIL attacked Naito’s surgically repaired knee (he’s using Naito’s biggest weakness against him, as he knows all about it having been his friend for years), then brought a table into play, which he ultimately gave Naito a knee breaker through off the apron, which looked absolutely no fun whatsoever to take. Then the nonsense started; Jado strolled out with all the urgency of an underwater deep sea diver, as too did Ishimori, who takes Naito out with a springboard. Hiromu sprints out, getting rid of Jado, then hitting the overhead suplex into the corner on Ishimori, then drags both guys to the back. EVIL smashes a chair over the double champs head, then tries the STO, but Naito escapes and hits a swinging reverse Destino for a near fall. Naito then hits Valentia (which really should be his finish, if you ask me), then tries Destino, but EVIL grabs Red Shoes and hits a mule kick lowblow on Naito. At this point, “BUSHI” comes out, cheering Naito on, but then once his back is turned, starts garrotting him with a gimmick, choking him out. EVIL hits the stomp to the balls, then lifts Naito up and hits Everything Is Evil to win both Championships, unceremoniously ending Naito’s double reign, in a major upset to say the least. The Osaka-Jo Hall crowd were stunned at this outcome and I could almost hear wrestling Twitter break. 

Hey say what you want about Gedo’s booking, but when he straps the rocket to someone, he doesn’t mess around. In the post match, “BUSHI” unmasked to reveal himself to be veteran Dick Togo(!!!). Hiromu ran them off and cut a fiery promo on EVIL, setting himself up as his first challenger, presumably on the 27th in Nagoya, but who knows? I mean, a lot happened here, and not all of it good. The shenanigans in these matches is starting to get old school TNA level, and although New Japan are in a difficult position, they’re setting up quite a few programmes, though I can’t say all of them are looking especially good to me. There remains a lot to be seen with regards to EVIL on top too. Usually, a young champions first reign isn’t especially long, so I don’t imagine this to be either, and he’ll likely just drop both belts back to Naito at some point. Time will tell on all of this.

I swung, aiming for surprise, directing the iron at the skull.

It caught the iron mid-swing.  I tried to wrench the weapon free and failed.

Another hand emerged from beneath the hides.  I had to let go of the weapon and back away before it could claw at me.

It took a half-step forward to follow.  It dropped the tire iron onto the road, where the snow muffled the sound.

Blake you can’t fight this with a stick so please run before you die and also get Rose more hurt maybe. Is this what got Molly?

“How does this end, then?” I asked.  “We wait out here by the side of the road until I freeze to death?”

I paced, watching how it followed.  The knobby, long-fingered hand came out as I drew too close.

There was a hint of hysteria in my voice as I spoke, “Can’t go forward, can’t go back.  I won’t go left.   Will you let me go right?”

I like that he’s talking in the middle of this. Makes no sense, I’d be breathing hard at least, but I like it.

The hop hadn’t inspired a sudden attack.  Briefly turning my back, too, seemed like it was fairly safe.

That in mind, when I found flat ground under my feet again, I ran.

SMART BLAKE YES

“Rose,” I gasped out the name.  I fumbled for the mirror, but my hands were frozen.  I got a grip on the bar that was supposed to fix the mirror to the ceiling and pulled it out.

“-here.”

Her voice was faint, tiny, and muffled, cutting off as though someone had reached out to muffle her.

ROSE IS ALIVE YES

I could feel a sick feeling in my gut, a combination of fear, despair, and the exhaustion of running.

I saw a figure up ahead, through the tree cover.

A quick glance back showed me the other one was still following.  Closing the gap.

“Hello!” I called out, and I was surprised at how hoarse my voice was, my throat made raw by the heavy breathing of frozen, dry air.  “Help me!”

The figure pushed through the cover of branches.

A bird skull, a covering of overlapping hides, bleached white and stained, and a heavy wreath of branches around the neck and shoulders, like a nest.

And there goes my good mood. Oooh no.

There, in the distance, in a gap between neat rows of trees.  A third, with the hides forming a hood over the bird skull.  Shorter than the others.

Bad bad bad

“Rose,” I said.

I heard only a whisper of a noise.  I wiped the mirror against the side of my leg, mid-run.

Bad bad bad bad bad

I came face to face with another of the bird-skulls, not looking carefully enough for the white skull and white hides against the snowy background.  It clawed at me, backhanded, and dashed the mirror out of my hands.  I fell, a result of the combined impact, pain and surprise, landing just beside the flecks of blood he’d clawed from my hand.  My glove was cut, the skin around it exposed, and a line of blood was nestled in the center.  Bewildered, I watched as the skin parted and joined together, as I opened and closed my hand.

Okay Blake I know that you are amazing but now is not the time to admire yourself

No mirror, no Rose.

WAIT WHAT

It clawed at me, backhanded, and dashed the mirror out of my hands.

NO

Were they wanting me to try to cross?  Was that the plan?

I sat by the bank instead.

I looked at the bird masks that had gathered formed a loose three-quarter circle around me.

“This okay with you bastards?” I asked.  “Can I sit?  You like this?”

The hides flapped in the wind.

“Motherfuckers,” I said.  I moved my hands up to my armpits, squishing them beneath my arms.  I could feel the pain in my wounded hand.  My cheek felt tight where I’d been scratched.

Blake: I want to run

Deerbirds: Run that way

Blake: Okay now I will not do that

“Please tell me reflections in water work too.”

“Yeah,” she responded.

Alright, so not everything’s fucked! That’s good!

“Does it matter?  I think those orders are why they’re behaving this way.  Barring my path to keep me from certain areas.  Driving me away from shelter, wearing me out.”

“They want plausible deaths.”

That means we have a smart antagonist for a smart protagonist... I’m ready for sassy Sherlock and also sassy Sherlock vs Deerbird Moriarty!

“Not sure how I’m supposed to do that,” I said.  I sighed, and my teeth chattered as the air passed through my lips.  “All I can figure is they don’t want to claw me to death.”

“Molly was clawed to death,” Rose said.

I closed my eyes.

Blake: Okay that’s neat Rose but could you please keep those thoughts to yourself thanks

Alternatively,

Blake: *inhale* boi.

I forced myself to my feet.  I was shaking, now.

“What are you thinking?” she asked.

“I’m not,” I said.  “I just hate sitting still.”

“You need a plan.”

“Any fucking ideas?” I asked.

Man, it’s only been two chapters but I’m so invested in Blake. I know he won’t die here but I am really scared it will happen anyway.

Maybe that’s the blogging’s fault?

The three-masked one slowly removed one mask from its shoulder.

It dawned on me.

That mask was going to be mine.

One of those is Molly. Calling it.

“I’ll take a guess, if you have to give me one, Rose.  Just lie convincingly.  I’ll lose heart if I don’t buy it.”

“Your three o’clock,” she said.

Nothing more.  No details.  No explanation on why it was the right direction.

Right.

I always love the chemistry between clones. It’s always unique but similar, and this is no different.

Each step was a careful one as I made my way towards the middle of the pond.  I transferred my weight with care, doing my best to avoid putting too much weight on one point at once.  The three-masked one moved to cut me off, keeping me on the ice.

I heard the faintest cracking sounds.  Around me, not them.

I made a beeline straight for three-masks.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh-

Woman’s hands, oddly enough, with flecks of nail polish still on one.  Wizened, worn, abused, with bits of nail splintered off where they had maybe scraped violently against something.

Grandma Rose?

The ice didn’t break beneath them.  My heart sank.

I collided head-on with three-masks, and felt her stab at my shoulders through my coat, clawing through fabric with no heed for her own well being.  Frenzied, violent and noisy after the almost tranquil quiet.

Are they ghosts? Wendigos? Some other horrible creature? Either way, they don’t ‘properly’ exist physically.

In one motion, full-body, I managed to heave it about three feet.  I watched it bounce off the ice and slide, uselessly, towards the middle of the spread out bird-masks.

It lay there for a good ten seconds before the ice broke.  I watched as the things plunged into the water.

Yay! Something worked!

Leaving me with only two to deal with.

I ran, fueled by desperation.

I ran, fueled by the adrenaline that pain was dumping into my body.  Through shock and fear.  Nothing conserved, nothing saved.

Thick trees tore at me, costing me my toque.  My frozen hand and foot were throbbing, now, and my injured hand was so cold I couldn’t open my fist.

NOT THE TOQUE! Saddest death so far. Rip toque, enjoy clothes heaven with scarf.

I found the end of the trees.  A strip of snow.  A line of road.

Squat, short buildings, and a sign reading ‘truck inspection area’.

Headlights flared in my field of vision, blindingly bright.

I staggered forward, collapsing onto my hands and knees.  I could hear a vehicle’s door open.

I’d say Blake is safe but I’m feeling more paranoid than he is.

“Good god, man,” a deep voice said.  “What the hell did you get yourself into?”

I thought about explaining, about the others.  I’d sound crazy.

I thought about making an excuse, saying I was chased by some delinquent kids.  It would get the police involved, and it would delay me.

“Car broke down,” I said, a little numb.  “I thought I’d take a shortcut, got turned around.  I- I- panicked.  I started running and got hurt.”

“We’ll get you an ambulance, not to worry.”

Why do nice people in this make me nervous?

“If I don’t get you to a hospital, and you die-”

“I’m not going to die,” I said, not sure if I was lying.  “Drop me off at the rest stop, I’ll warm up and get food.  I’ll hitch a ride to where I need to be.”

“If you’re positive,” he said.  “I don’t want you haunting me or anything, and I don’t want lawsuits either.  I don’t make that much money.”

He nodded.  “Sure, then.  You need help getting up?”

I like this guy but still don’t trust him. Also, did Whatbomb miss a line there?

Was that a rule, here?  No monsters after sunrise, or no monsters when others could see?

I made eye contact with Rose, in the side-view mirror.

She looked drained, haggard.  Almost worse than I did.

Day is typically good in stories, so I’d say yes. Also, Rose is okay! Yay! Kinda okay. Maybe a little worn down.

As the truck driver talked to some employees, negotiating a way to get me to my stop, I saw a man in the corner with an oddly crooked stance, leaning against the wall as if his limbs wouldn’t hold him up, the whites of his eyes too white as he tracked us with his gaze.  Staying out of the way, almost out of sight.

SUSPICIOUS! STAY AWAY BLAKE, THAT’S A BADDIE

Wow. The chapter’s already done. Not much calling it in this chapter, so I’m gonna hold off on analysis until after a few more ‘calling it’s.

I’m really nervous and I love that!

Adaptive Golf and the Importance of Early Success

One of the most highly touted aspects of adaptive golf has been its accessibility as a sport, particularly for those who have sustained a stroke, amputation, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury. This is most often referenced in the fact that the ball is stationary and adaptations can be made to the equipment to help you be successful. While there are many challenges that Inspiration Golf faces when taking on the task of making golf truly accessible to the populations we serve, we wanted to focus on how we create strategies to provide early success in our adaptive golf programs.

The need for early success appeals to our microwave, instant-access culture, but it is also an important ingredient in starting something new. In the rehabilitation world, early success helps the client buy into the process and try the next step (sometimes literally as well as figuratively). In golf, especially for the new golfer, early success can be a powerful motivator and that is one of the reasons we’ve chosen golf as a platform for our programs. Golf has a way of instilling a kind of dedication to one’s craft, and so we try to combine the abilities of the golfer with modified equipment and techniques to help them experience success early and often.

The following are some examples of modified equipment or techniques we use with the adaptive golfer.

Short Drivers and Long Tees

One of the strategies we use in our programs is the Short Driver and Long Tee - a concept developed by the Adaptive Golf Academy. Shorter drivers are easier to control (read: make center contact on the club face or even contact in general) and reduces the swing weight. Striking the ball with the center of the club face increases compression of the golf ball (more distance) and Smash Factor (a measure of the transfer of energy from the club head to the ball at impact). Center contact on the club face also has the added benefit of a very pleasing feeling when the club head hits the ball. The Long Tee allows our golfers to swing on a plane that avoids hitting their legs without having to manipulate their stance.

Open Stance (one-handed swing)

For the seated golfer, coming up with a strategy to avoid hitting their legs with the golf club is often the initial challenge. This outcome is often very discouraging and the resulting pain can be a de-motivator.

By opening the stance and using the trail arm, the golfer is able to play from a more “side arm” position without the risk of hitting their legs.

Ball position is often off the front caster with shoulder range of motion and trunk control being advantageous to creating power and distance.

Standing (one-handed swing): Trail vs. Lead arm

Golfers who have deficits on one side of their body experience challenges with weight shift and balance. This disrupts their kinematic sequence and it’s often difficult for them to generate power.

A strategy to give them early success with distance is to have the golfer swing with their trail arm even if it means switching a RH golfer to a LH golfer. Some caveats to going this route can be an increased initial cost of different clubs, and possibly creating obstacles regarding their kinematic sequence. A discussion of a golfer’s goals is important before making a change like this.

The lead arm golfer has some advantages regarding shifting the bottom of the swing arc ahead of the ball on iron shots leading to better contact and compression of the golf ball. Swing speed can still take a hit from decreased loading into the trail leg but there’s less reinvention of the wheel involved.

Assisted standing using the Paragolfer

The last strategy we will mention is a piece of tech we have at Inspiration Golf - the Paragolfer.

The Paragolfer is a power mobility device that has the ability to assist a golfer to stand - even if the golfer’s legs are paralyzed. It’s a remarkable device that is, essentially, a power wheelchair designed to be used on the golf course. It handles terrain well and distributes pressure so effectively that it can drive onto putting greens without damaging them.

Using the Paragolfer gives adaptive golfers the opportunity to stand during the golf swing and access parts of the golf course that were previously inaccessible because of physical limitations.

Going from sitting to standing is very much a game-changer. Although lie adjustments go a long way for a seated golfer, it’s hard to replicate the vertical momentum that comes from swinging a club that, quite honestly, was designed to be swung from a standing position. That being said, we leverage every appropriate variable (technique, physical skills, and technology) to maximize our golfers’ game.

We do recommend that programs that use this device develop a screening protocol to determine safe operation and physical readiness to use the Paragolfer.
