31 Days of Dead 2019 | Day 13: Seastones > Jam > Ship of Fools – Miami, FL 6/23/74
December 13
Friday The 13th Edition: The Bermuda Triangle, Seastones, Hunter’s Birthday, and Watergate
Seastones > Jam > Ship of Fools (6/23/74 – Jai-Alai Fronton • Miami, FL)
Today is Friday the 13th, so I decided to embrace the strange. No show defines that theme better than June 23, 1974. First, the venue exudes weirdness – a Jai-Alai Fronton in Miami, not far from the legendary Bermuda Triangle, where all sorts of unaccountable events are believed to have occurred. In addition, we have an evening of unusual song choices and weirdly-placed jams – a “Ramble on Rose” opener, the only “Let It Rock,” a rare instrumental-only version of “Dark Star,” and only the third “Spanish Jam” since 2/11/70. But it is the sequence that opens the second set that really raises the odd bar, and it is the highlighted jam for today. Shall we go?
We begin with one of the all-time strangest things the band ever did – Phil and Ned’s avant-garde electronic experiment known as “Seastones.” This is the very first performance, and it must have sent any navigational instruments within the Bermuda Triangle into a tailspin. With its unrelenting assault of harsh tones, “Seastones” makes a conventional Grateful Dead feedback jam actually seem quite accessible. There is no doubt in my mind that the poor, unsuspecting people in the audience, hearing this for the first time, were ill-prepared for what was about to hit them. The intensity of the electronic noise powered through the mighty Wall of Sound must have been apocalyptic. It was probably too much for even the headiest of fans who blissfully dance to “everything.” One can only imagine how this terrifying assault affected the curious local, Jimmy Buffet-types that dropped in and dropped acid to “get mellow” with the Dead. People must have been losing their shit left and right – fragments of brain matter sprayed all over the venue. Were there any survivors?
Fortunately, the band has mercy on the audience and comes out with an exquisite, drifty jam that explores every nook and cranny of “Ship Of Fools” before the song itself even begins. Beautiful and melodic, this jam wants for nothing. Eventually it gently floats into one of the finest imaginable versions of “Ship of Fools.” Song placement is everything, and here it is executed perfectly. Whether it was done intentionally or not, that sequence of music represents a metaphorical voyage through the Bermuda Triangle like none other.
Let’s take a moment to talk about the Hunter-Garcia composition, “Ship of Fools.” We concluded yesterday with “Wave That Flag,” a song that underwent a re-write and eventually became “U.S. Blues.” With both the Vietnam War and Watergate looming large, it is not too much of a stretch to assume that perhaps Hunter had political satire in mind when he wrote “U.S. Blues.” “Ship of Fools,” which was written during the same time period, shares the same laughter, and may be rooted in the same theme. The argument becomes a little stronger when you consider that “U.S. Blues” and “Ship of Fools” frame the 1974 album, From the Mars Hotel, as the first and last tracks respectively.
To add the cherry to top of this peculiar cake, this standout performance took place on Hunter’s 33rd birthday. Happy Friday The 13th!!!
