Returning rescued orangutan mom and infant to the wild a year ago. Read the story after the credits. This is a #Repost from @drbirute ・・・ OFI (Orangutan Foundation International) rescued a wild adult female orangutan with her newborn infant and juvenile offspring from a palm oil plantation in a village adjacent to Tanjung Puting National Park, Central Indonesian Borneo (Province of Kalimantan Tengah). Mother with newborn and the juvenile daughter were, respectively, transported in separate cages. The daughter was released first in a safe location which consisted of tropical peat swamp forest. Peat swamp forest is the preferred habitat of many orangutan populations in both Borneo and Sumatra. After the orangutan juvenile daughter was released, rushing into the trees, OFI immediately released the mother with her newborn infant. Here in this video, taken by volunteer Philip Stubley, the mother orangutan does an interesting thing: she very competently helps push open the door of the transport cage, as if she’d been doing it all her life. She came out of the cage vocalizing her unhappiness at being confined. Then she moved quickly into the trees, clearly content at finally being back in the wild. #orangutan #orangutans #orangutanrescue #ofi #orangutanfoundationinternational #ofiaustralia #oficanada #borneo #kalimantan #tanjungputingnationalpark #translocation #wildliferescue #newbornorangutan #tropicalpeatswampforest #drbirutemarygaldikas #drgaldikas #orangutanconservation #orangutanmother #newborninfant #wildlifeconservation #saynotoconflictpalmoil #saynotopalmoil https://www.instagram.com/p/ByIaUWrAhMG/?igshid=h4u31qbka4cx

Reposted from @unitefortheorangutan Reposted from @ofi_australia Happy birthday Dr Biruté Mary Galdikas. Celebrating 50 Years in the Field! This year marks 50 years since OFI President and Founder Dr Galdikas made camp in the jungles of Borneo to begin her pioneering study of orangutans, one of humankind’s closest living relatives. This year we are celebrating this momentous anniversary to honour Dr. Biruté for dedicating her life to the conservation of orangutans and our world’s endangered biodiversity and ecosystems. Dr. Biruté has saved the lives of thousands of orangutans and has helped ensure that wild orangutan populations and their tropical rainforests will thrive into the future. We are beginning our celebrations of this momentous milestone in honour of her 75th birthday this year May 10th, 2021. Please consider making a donation to support the inspirational work of Dr Galdikas. The link to our website is in our bio. #drburute #drgaldikas #saveorangutans #50yearsinthefield #50thanniversary https://www.instagram.com/p/COrSV70hawG/?igshid=1lyzjaqqgw8o1
