Using the right shampoo is key. There's no need for expensive shampoos specially designed for locs, but you do need shampoo that aids the locking process. This client came in for maintenance only one month after installing them. Right of the bat I saw the wrong shampoo was used. His locs were supersoft and came undone. He used shampoo that softened his hair which made the hairs slip. I adviced him using a shampoo that doesn't make the hairs soft and starting off he should look to shampoos that even take the greasyness off and make it more course. In the future he can change it to something more balanced. Usually I advice to wash with shampoo for greasy hair or soapbars like @happysoaps or @natureboxbeauty also the soapbars and shampoos from @dollylocks I have great experience with, but they are on the more expensive side of shampoos. Detoxing is only necessary once or twice a year. Too often and your scalp gets dry and flaky. As for this client, I made his locs all tidy again and he went to go get him a soapbar. At this point I don't sell any myself. Would liquid shampoo or a shampoo bar be better for 2+ month old dreads? How old should dreads be before switching from a liquid to a bar shampoo?
Liquid shampoo is better for young dreads. It's gentle on the bodies of the dreads and it's easier to get between the roots.
Bar shampoo (not bar soap) tends to have ingredients that can be somewhat conditioning to the hair to maintain the health, which is fine for mature dreads that won't come apart.
If you can take your dread and rub it between your fingertips without it coming undone or frizzy, then they are probably locked up enough to handle washing with bar soap, because we mainly focus on the scalp. Usually around 3 to 4 months old, the texture of your dreads change so much, they tend to get harder and can handle a good scrubbing on the bodies of the dreads or a deep clean. That's why I recommend waiting to condition until month 4.
I highly recommend finding a bar shampoo with natural ingredients, that is residue free. From personal experience, http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com has liquid shampoo that great for young baby dreads. It's made especially to help them lock up. I got a sample of it when I ordered my shampoo bars, and it spread out between my dreads very well, and I believed helped my hair to tangle better while washing.
