He’d just grasped the handle, prepared to announce himself, when he heard it.

Or, more precisely, he heard her.

He stood still, petrified in place as if spelled that way. Then, he slowly leaned forward to press his ear to the wooden surface.

“Nnnnn, ah! Just like that.”

He jerked back, accidentally letting go of the knocker. The heavy metal swung forward in a loud thud. Draco scrambled to smooth his uniform, then tucked his hands behind his back and stood straight. He waited.

The time it took between his knock and the door opening was inappropriately long.

Were they…finishing what they’d started?

He leaned forward once more, ears straining for any hint of what might lie behind the barrier. Just as he was about to make contact, the handle started to turn and he yanked himself upright.

“Malfoy?”
