WoT s3 album drop at midnight!! No singles which makes me sad, but I wrote up my thoughts on the track list and am curious what you think? Any wishlist items?

AAAAAHHHHH i'm so excited!!! and i love all your thoughts on the track list, they feel like good guesses!

it's so interesting that rand and perrin are getting new themes. but now they join egwene, nynaeve, and mat in having a theme that is named after the character; maybe the s1 "dragon reborn" and "goldeneyes" themes may transition into being somewhat more about the overall concept of TDR and wolfbrothers than rand and perrin specifically. though i do absolutely adore the s1 TDR theme so i hope it doesn't get pushed TOO far aside in favor of the new rand theme haha that's always my dilemma, i'm excited for new themes but i still want to continue hearing the existing themes get used a lot!

not sure if you were able to watch the early 3x01 screening on saturday, but the end credits music for that episode was a song with a singer singing - i don't remember at all what the lyrics were, but i wonder if it might be one of the tracks included on this album that lists an additional artist besides lorne balfe.

alas, elayne will have to keep waiting for her individual theme! that's okay with me though, i can imagine the andor theme will be versatile enough to fit moments with her as well as with the Royal House (like how the aes sedai theme keeps getting used for big nynaeve channeling moments instead of her individual character theme, to the point where there's that one particular variation of it that feels like it's Nynaeve's Theme TM even though it also applies to aes sedai more broadly).

wild thought, could "the maiden in the dream" be about lanfear creeping on rand's dreams and trying to style herself all egwene-like in his randgwene memories?

i wonder if "the hills of tanchico" might end up being an in-world folk song. they've teased that characters will sing in tanchico!

and my biggest question of all, do we think this is solely the Themes album and there will be an additional album released closer to the end of the season with the in-show music, as has happened with prior seasons, or is it only going to be the one album this time and it's a mix of Themes and in-show? i dearly hope for the former!! i want as much officially-released s3 music as possible!

eyes open - to me this is very much giving cassian vibes, "two steps ahead and staying on guard" and of course he's a spy, he's the most observant star war blorbo so lbr he's always keeping his eyes open. but also the entire song is very trauma-related hypervigilance and our kiddos definitely have so much of that. and finally "nobody comes to save you now" of course doesn't apply to jyn but it does apply to all of rogue one since the rebellion didn't get its shit together in the first place enough to get a real, sanctioned mission on scarif. but for jyn, cassian does nothing BUT come to save her.

cowboy like me - TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE lmao I've written about how this is their song before but it's just giving two messy bitches colliding in the midst of a heist, or a mission in their case, and understanding each other so intimately because they're the same. I mean as captain of the good ship rc diego luna says, they're mirrors. PLUS like okay now you hang from my lips like the gardens of Babylon with your boots beneath my bed forever is the sweetest con??? cowboy like me!rebelcaptain is the happy ending they were given at one point, with a wedding allegedly and definitely a kiss. but I just love the idea of them seeing each other and just knowing, oh shit they're like me.

I bet you think about me - well technically I said I could relate the songs to either cass or jyn as well as rebelcaptain but because you asked for rc specifically... hm. Okay "I was raised on a farm" is very much giving baby jyn with galen and lyra hosting "kitchen table balls" aka trying to keep their happy family together in some semblance of normalcy even on the run. You and I fell like an early spring snow, I mean cassian is almost immediately unhinged about jyn so 😂 and THEN mr superior thinking does feel like a jab at cass during their post-eadu fight, but of course that song only applies in individual lines, not like... the whole idea behind the song. cassian would never laugh at her dreams, but jyn did sort of give him a nearly laugh when he told her "rebellions are built on hope" so... there's stuff there. I consider this one a success.

london boy - I mean if you think jyn didn't get charmed by the dipples and I mean there's a lyric about joe's accent - no fetishizing of diego's accent here, still of course his voice is lovely. in the book jyn was horny enough to immediately start thinking of his conversational tone as being like he was talking to her over dinner and then she went looking to see if he had any proof of a wife in his bag so this is a hell of a stretch but it works 😂

Hello there! I was wondering if you could possibly translate this quote: (I know it's a different fandom, but I was wondering if you could translate it anyways. I think it would be neat to see it in High Valyrian.)... "Not all who wander are lost."

So listen… I know this wasn't the intent, and I know that you're kind of standing in for tons of people from my past, but like… When people ask to have something translated, do they really not give any thought to the grammatical complexity of what they're asking for? And 100% this is not just you, but like… Embedded clauses, relative clauses, counterfactuals…

Something I didn't realize till I started creating languages for a living is translation is my least favorite part of language creation—and it's what I spend the most time doing.

Okay, so, "Not all who wander are lost". Good lord. First, there's "lost", which has a literal and metaphorical meaning in English. Absolutely no idea if this would translate in High Valyrian, and I'm pretty sure I don't have a word for "lost", and I don't even know how to go about creating one. Spanish perdido essentially comes from "wasted" or "squandered". We know where English "lost" came from. There actually is a word for "to lose" in HV, but it's to lose a battle. Doesn't make sense to use it here. So I'm going with something that kind of evokes that mists that surround destroyed Valyria and use the locative of "fog", so to be sambrarra "in the fog" means "to be lost".

I also don't (or didn't) have a word for "wander", but I made a derivation based on one of my favorite words, elēnagon, which means to oscillate or swerve. Jorelēnagon now means "to wander". Seems to fit.

And that was the easy part. A relative clause is something like "The dragon that I saw is big". "Whoever I saw is big" also features a kind of relative clause—an indefinite relative clause. These things are absolute murder to create. But no. It's not just that. It's a modified indefinite relative, because it's not "Whoever wanders is lost", it's "All who wander are lost". BUT IT'S NOT JUST THAT. It's negated on top of that. NE. GA. TED. And not just in the usual way: It's the Mothra fumbling quantifier that's negated. It's not whoever wanders. It's not all who wander. It's NOT ALL who wander. This is like my nightmare—being asked to translate something like this. This is giving me flashbacks to season 1 of House of the Dragon when they asked me to translated "Would that it were", as if that was some reasonable thing for a human being to say in any language ever.

Anyway, if you type "indefinite relative clause" into my High Valyrian grammar, you come up with nothing, because I always forget to write down how the hell I decided to do them. I think because I have both relative adjectives and pronouns that I can just use the damn pronouns by themselves. God. "Not all…" Are you kidding me?! You know High Valyrian has a whole collective number to handle "all", right? What, do I just negate that? Will the meaning be the same as a negated quantifier?! Like it's [[not all] who wander], right? And you can bracket like that because they're all separate words. But what if "all who" is one word? What then?! BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT IS!

(By the way I just added a sentence to my grammar that includes the phrase "indefinite relative clause" so I can search for it. It's not like this wasn't written up, but I honestly probably forgot what the term was when I wrote the section the first time and I never revisited it.)

Okay. I'm calm and cool. So. Returning to the translation. There are two types of relative pronouns: One that refers to people or things, and another that refers to concepts or ideas or places. We're talking about people here, so we need the first one. And we need it in the collective. That's lȳr. Leaving the negation aside, this can be translated fairly easily:

Jorelēnus lȳr sambrarra ilza.

Okay, that's "All who wander are lost". I chose the aorist subjunctive for the relative because it's like "anyone who may wander"; I think it makes sense. Lȳr is grammatically singular, so it triggers third person singular agreement in both verbs. Since we're using ilagon as a locative copula here, I think (think) the present tense makes the most sense. So that is "All who wander are lost".

Now how the flarking frump do you say "not all" when "all who" is lȳr?!

So since lȳr is a pronoun it can be modified with an adjective, which would like like this:

Jorelēnus dōre lȳr sambrarra ilza.

But the problem with that is I don't think it gives us the intended meaning. I think that means "None who wander are lost", and that's not what the intended meaning is at all. It is basically "Some people who wander are indeed lost—perhaps many of them—but some of those who are wandering are not, in fact, lost". This is also why you can't negate the matrix verb. That would mean "Anyone that might be wandering is not lost"—again, not the intended meaning. This is the crux of the whole translation: Negating the quantifier and not what the quantifier is modifying.

For that reason, the only thing I can think to do is to go to a much more prolix, and, frankly, un-Valyrian-like expression. This would mean taking the relative pronoun out of the collective, putting it back in the singular, adding in a quantifier, and negating it. That would be this:

Jorelēnus dōre tolvie lȳ sambrarra ilza.

Is that it? I honestly don't know. It is a translation; I'm not sure if it's the best translation. Another possibility is to re-translate it and say "A few who may wander are not lost". That would look like this:

Jorelēnusy lȳn sambrarra ilosy daor.

The pronoun is now in the paucal, which triggers plural agreement on both verbs. (And, by the way, thank goodness sambrarra is a noun phrase; it doesn't have to agree with anything!) And this is, basically, "A few who may wander are not lost".

I feel like the second translation is better maybe…? It feels more Valyrianesque. But I'm not 100% sure it conveys the same sense.

Anyway, I started translating this a little over two hours ago. That's what this takes. That's how long something this complex takes. Granted, it didn't have my full attention at all times, because I was watching Booksmart, but this was my second time watching it, so I didn't have to give the movie my undivided attention (though it had been a few years; there were bits I didn't remember). But yeah. Translation. My god. Like…why. Creating languages is fun. Translation is work. (And if it's not work, you're doing it wrong. Mic drop; soap box kicked.)

I saw a bunch of your Wheel of Time soundtrack analyses and some of the mysteries there so if you've actually answered these since then feel free to ignore-

Darkness and Shadows- based on the lyrics I think this is a general "fight the Shadow" theme, because its its opening notes play, when Moiraine shows up in her blue outfit in the Foregate, it appears in Min’s conversation with Ishamael, and when Alanna confronts Lan about being a Darkfriend. I think it might also be in Verin's attack against the Fade but the sound effects really drowned it out

Last Light- the only time this appears in the show is in Ishamael's and Lanfear's convo in the Dreamworld, where she's pretending to be Rand

Coming Home- the Damodred theme is in there! It's the backing plucked strings at about 1:32 on the album track. This took me forever. I'm not sure but I think we can hear it in Alanna's scene with her family so maybe it's just about Aes Sedai at home in general

The theme where Lanfear gets unsealed- not on the album, but it's also used when Ishamael is sealed, and as a cue when they pan over those old skyscrapers, so maybe it's an AoL theme and we'll see

Anyway, really looking forward to those s3 albums! We need a s1 drop with 4 albums please Lorne

ooh good catch that the lanfear & ishy sealing theme also appears in the old skyscrapers shot. i would love if we got this expanded into a proper AOL theme for the s3 soundtrack! with us seeing more of the AOL in the glass columns, it would be a good time to formalize its musical theme.

same i'm soooooo excited for the s3 albums!! every season i anticipate the soundtrack almost as highly as the actual season haha yeah i would LOVE to get the 4-album model that s1 had again! although maybe s1 will remain an outlier with the largest OST since it was the first time establishing all the music of the show, whereas subsequent seasons reuse a lot of the established music and have less new tracks to release. still, there were so many little in-show snippets in s2 that weren't on the OST anywhere and i was very sad about it, so i'd love for s3 to have a more comprehensive OST! fingers crossed!

I was tagged by @dragonsoftheeast to write about my writing - thank you!!! If you know me, you know I love to go on about this, so be prepared, this is a long one.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Elite Elite Elite, baby. I have one Money Heist fic (Nairobi, la puta madre para siempre 🔥) and one Class fic, but that's an Elite remake, sooo… I'm pretty much a one-trick pony haha.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Close your eyes, count to ten (duh); The ties were black, the lies were white (next chapter coming soon!); Midnights in October; Summer state of mind; It's the most wonderful time of the year

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes! I'm so grateful for comments and love chatting with people about their thoughts, the characters, my interpretation of them, etc.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hmm, I don't know that I really do angsty endings. Lots of angsty stories and chapter endings, for sure. But the ending-ending is usually at least hopeful, or perhaps melancholy. Maybe Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Fics like Midnights in October or Best Friends Forever are sad, but I wouldn't say the ending is angsty.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Close your eyes, count to ten! No way was I going to give Lu anything but the happiest ending after everything I put her through ❤️

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No! Honestly surprising considering I write so much VaLu and they're a little controversial, but I guess I got into Elite fic when the fandom was already pretty small, so not that many people were around to care anymore, haha.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Only very brief scenes.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Midnights in October is a ghost story (that's really a story about friendship) inspired by The Haunting of Bly Manor. And, uh, 12 points go to… is kind of a crossover with the Eurovision Song Contest? But my only real crossover is I put a spell on you, Hocus Pocus with the Elite characters.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Not yet.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

Lu and Valerio will always have my heart.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I have a laaarge number of story ideas that only exist in my head, but I don't have any unfinished WIPs right now. I'd like to think I'll end whatever it is I started, even if it may take me forever 🙃

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm good with plotting- I have good ideas that I can turn into fairly good stories, I'd like to think. I give different characters room to grow, or at least give them little moments to shine, too, not just my favorites/ main characters. With characters I know well, I can make them "make sense"- dig into their motivations, their character traits, how they've been treated and have it be clear (maybe not for the characters around them, but for the reader) why they act the way they do and why they make certain decisions, even when they're bad decisions.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

There are some physical reactions people have that I repeat too often. I love angsty drama and in longer stories, I put in so much sometimes that it loses its effect a little, I think. I'd like to be able to write more lyrically, but I can't, so most of my stuff is pretty straight-forward. And I can't write good smut to save my life.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I personally don't believe in it. The occasional pet name or whatever thrown in is fine, but apart from that it a) doesn't make much sense to me; whatever language you write it, to me it's implied that this is the characters' mother tongue- like, I write in English, but the Elite characters live in Madrid, so the assumption is that they all speak Spanish, which would make switching to actual Spanish weird. And b) it's more work for readers then having to use online translators to figure out what people are saying.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I started to put down a Grey's Anatomy fic about Izzie and Denny yeeears ago that didn't go anywhere.

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

Obviously Close your eyes, count to ten will always be my baby. I spent close to three years with the characters and I'm proud of the story. But depending on the day and my mood I have other favorite fics, too.

@aethelreds god this line is like nails on the chalkboard for me, it's so clearly meant to be this profound statement on the nature of womanhood or whatever but what it really does is reveal the limits of the writers' imagination. alas, women must suffer, such is the world!

i'm impressed you have thoughts (please share) I just had an increasing buzz in my ear while watching it

@dragonsoftheeast well, these are maybe not super coherent thoughts or anything, but the ongoing thread throughout the series is that suffering is this integral part of womanhood. while men definitely suffer in tlk, it's not integral to manhood in the way violence is integral to manhood. a man acts, a woman is acted upon (sometimes she might get to stab an abusive man in retaliation as a little treat!). the most virtuous woman bravely suffers without complaint and never loses her instinctively nurturing and supportive nature. see: thyra, eadith, hild, so on and so forth.
