my cool future setting for dragonriders of pern where one weyr got just like, super fucking dictatorial and a few dragonpairs were like "hey this 'only let golds breed and only under the strict watch and dispersal of the government' shit sucks. we're gonna not eat firestone and hang out in the places we're from and allow the wider community to impress on the eggs our greens lay.* plus if every community has some dragons, smaller unaffiliated towns can exist and protect themselves" and so dragons and their impressed humans who live outside the strict construct of "dragon and rider train to thwart thread" are a thing.

the offspring of greens tend to be smaller and to come in smaller clutches than those of golds, but this is almost more suited to the needs of most communities outside the weyrs anyhow

i was just daydreaming about harper dragons and their humans performing dizzying aerial dances recounting historical threadfalls, with specialized firestone that produces not a hot, scalding flame, but beautiful showers of colorful sparks.

*based on the bit of contradictory lore where greens and golds both have laying ability but the greens make themselves infertile by chewing firestone and going between so frequently as opposed to the other bit of contradictory lore where Kitti Ping engineered only the golds to be able to lay fertile eggs. McCaffrey can't even keep the spelling of Kitti Ping's name consistent, nonetheless the main lore for the series

Pern AU where early on somebody says “wow, putting all the dragonriders out in the mountains leagues away from everyone where they and civilians all but never have to mix or interact sounds like an amazing way to immediately form a major social divide and breed contempt and derision on both sides, forming an ‘us v them’ mentality that’ll only be exacerbated by the rider’s heightened status due to their dragons and job’ and sets out to nip that little issue directly in the bud, leading to a Pern where the Weyrs are far more decentralized.

Each major Hold has a Dragon Hall where the goldpairs act as heads of a central administrative body, candidates go to their respective Hall, are trained in all they and their dragon need to know, and then are sent out to one of the regions of the territory to join a wing- whether one from their home region or not.

Fighting Thread would likely end up less a day-long slog and more like a relay event, with the fuckers covering Region A dropping back and getting to rest as Thread moves over Region B and their lot take over. Would help with the issue of greens and blues not lasting a full Fall, and might even help get them more time in Fall overall, an early greenpair may be able to recover and be ready to come in and help if a later region needs more hands due to a shift on weather, in Fall, or just that they’re short handed that Fall. And vis versa, in a region early in the Fall is shorthanded, pairs from later in the Fall might be able to come in and help them out while still having time to recover enough to be ready to fly their share.

On top of that, civilians who live and work with their riders week in and week out are less likely to see them as Other, both in an ‘omg they’re So Super Special’ way and in an ‘they’re leeches on society’ way. While dragonpairs who live and work among the greater populace week in and week out are more likely to be sympathetic to them and pull their own weight, especially if you toss them back into their home region.

If nothign else, during an Interval, when there’s no Thread to fight? Maybe the first couple decades they could live it easy but especially with riders coming from up and down the social ladder eventually pairs are gonna end up helping with the farmwork, helping with building, “Farroth can you rip this stump up for me? There’s a good lad.”

It’d be an interesting change in the setting.

I will not finish the piece until the payment is sent.  If I cannot finish a piece I will refund the money, otherwise no refunds will be given.  

Once you sign off on a sketch/WIP for completion, no more changes or fixes will be considered. 

There is no ETA on when your piece is completed but I will happily inform you of the status if you ask.  As I'm busy IRL and don't get much time to art, save on the weekends, please be patient.

You are not allowed to resell the art or make any profit from it.
