New Release ~ You Shall Not Pass

Ok, hear me out. The Fellowship of the Ring is on their way to Mordor, but decide to go through the Mines of Moria, the city of the Dwarves. They learn that the city fell to the orcs and as they quietly and precariously trekked through the darkness, they were startled by a glowing beast, the Balrog.

Now imagine that our favorite grey wizard is a frog… and the Balrog is a dragonfly.

This pattern depicts the epic battle between Gandalf and the Balrog, the iconic scene where Gandalf hollers, "You Shall Not Pass!"

I think I was able to source every pair but the geometric scissors, and if you'd like to look at even more--

Subversive Cross Stitch has a whole bunch of cool designs for sale, including like half a dozen of the ones in the tournament

Kelmscott Designs seems to be a BIG distributor of embroidery scissors; some of the Subversive Cross Stitch ones are sourced from them. I think they only sell wholesale, but if you see a pair you like it's pretty easy to find stores that'll sell them by-the-pair.

Never Not Knitting has a great selection, too, including the dragonfly scissors and a WHOLE bunch of other, similar ones. These little lovebirds almost made it into the bracket, but my sister convinced me to put in the dragonflies, instead.

Present & Correct has both vintage finds and some cool, weird scissors, like the shape scissors and these shredder scissors.

And if you'd like to daydream about some very nice luxury scissors, check out Maison Sajou, Ciselier, and the work of artist Emmanuel Jammas. Jammas made the Art Nouveau scissors plus two other pairs that'll pop up in the next round-- I tried not to have duplicate scissors from the same collections, but I made an exception for him.

Arts + Crafts Dump

I have not had a lot of time for stitching of late, thanks to a mix of my own choices, work projects, and general tiredness/burnout, but have a roundup post of everything y'all haven't seen since last September!  It’s mostly cross-stitch, with a few art pieces at the end.

There won’t be proper image descriptions, just keywords; I’m sorry to those who use them but I just do not have that many words in me. =(   If anyone would like more information on a specific piece, though, by all means please send me an ask and I’ll be happy to do that for you!  Answering an ask is much easier for my brain than posting from scratch.

The first two images are stitchbits from my Jan 2024 winter cards, which go to select family members and close friends+coworkers.

Color-variant poinsettia triplets and five dessert-inspired patterned hearts:

Next up are a variety of other-cardified stitchbits. On top, an eclipse for Mother's Day plus a pi pie and fossil for (Grand)Father's Day, all from @mathysphere's patterns. On bottom from a variety of places, a lavender bunch birthday card, a blue blossom wedding card, and a blue bird w/beads for another birthday card.

The rest of the stitching is some misc stitchbits, many embellished with beads: golden retriever, tiny pink bird, cardinal, galaxy pi (also from @mathysphere!), assissi flower, heart of roses, blackwork window cat, snowy pine, and antique evergreen.

Last up are the art pieces -- two watercolor versions of a picture of the Sandias (included for reference), and a tiny marker coloring of Dale Ray Deforest's Perry Rodent lineart from my Bubonicon badge.

It's not because our hearts are large, they're not, it's what we struggle with. The attempt to say Come over. Bring your friends. It's a potluck, I'm making pork chops, I'm making those long noodles you love so much. My dragonfly, my black-eyed fire, the knives in the kitchen are singing for blood, but we are the crossroads, my little outlaw, and this is the map of my heart, the landscape after cruelty which is, of course, a garden, which is a tenderness, which is a room, a lover saying Hold me tight, it's getting cold. 

We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero's shoulders and the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it. The lawn drowned, the sky on fire, the gold light falling backward through the glass of every room. I'll give you my heart to make a place for it to happen, evidence of a love that transcends hunger. Is that too much to expect? That I would name the stars for you? That I would take you there? The splash of my tongue melting you like a sugar cube? We've read the back of the book, we know what's going to happen. The fields burned, the land destroyed, the lovers left broken in the brown dirt. And then it's gone.

I was trying to describe the kingdom, but the letters kept smudging as I wrote them: the hunter's heart, the hunter's mouth, the trees and the trees and the space between the trees, swimming in gold. The words frozen. The creatures frozen. The plum sauce leaking out of the bag. Explaining will get us nowhere. I was away, I don't know where, lying on the floor, pretending I was dead. I wanted to hurt you but the victory is that I could not stomach it. We have swallowed him up, they said. It's beautiful. It really is. I had a dream about you. We were in the gold room where everyone finally gets what they want. You said Tell me about your books, your visions made of flesh and light and I said This is the Moon. This is the Sun. Let me name the stars for you. Let me take you there. I've already established pyro is a weevil but... What about the others?

Heavy is definitely a scarab beetle, they have the hardest carapice of any bug! Dung rolling aside, beeg stronk bug... And in animal crossing you find them during the winter before someone asks me why not a cold climate bug-

Medic is a jumping spider, they're incredibly intelligent and have a creepy-cute vibe. Not too spooky but palatable enough to arachnophobes... Plus, imagine him using webbing for stitches

Scout is a dragonfly, flashy and quick. Capable of 360° motion in flight and generally a very good looking bug. Maybe it's giving Scout too much credit but cmon, what's more perfect than a fast bug that immediately dies if it touches the water?

Soldier is a trap-jaw ant! Need I say more? I'm sure there's a million good options for Soldier but look at the ant and come back to me with a better idea lol

Demo is a bombardier beetle, known for being able to spit fire makes them a good candidate. You might be asking, why not Pyro be a bombardier beetle? Pyro is already weevil shaped you can't change my mind, lol. Demo is the next best thing given his love of explosions and alcohol... I imagine he uses the alcohol to help his fire spitting abilities.

Spy is an earwig. There's honestly no good reason for this they're just really nice looking bugs with really pretty wings... Earwigs are also considered pests like French people (joke)!

Pyro I established as a weevil, because weevils look like Pyro, and they're just very cute (also like Pyro! Until they burn your face off). There are also pine weevils, and pine is known for being very resilient to flames... Otherwise, not much a reason-

Sniper is a pistol shrimp... Before you say "tHat'S a CruSTaCeAn"- SHUT! These are my rules crustacean is bug to me. As the sharpshooter of the ocean world it fits Sniper very well! Also shrimp are weird, like Sniper.

Last but certainly not least is Engineer... I've been like thinking hard about this but I've determined Engie to be a roach! Hear me out roaches are smart and cleanly (domestic roaches are cleaner than dogs or cats). I imagine him digging through scrap metal to find ideal parts for machinery...

So just a little about me! (Updated!)

- I am a collegiate female (nonbinary) runner and hoping to someday be a coach!

- I have been running for 9 years!

- Senior in college, English Major 📚

- favorite running shoes: Saucony endorphin speed 2! Spikes: Nike Dragonfly XC, (super shoes dragonflies as well)

- highest mileage peak this fall (2024) is 75 miles, most weeks were about 68-72. Probably getting up, my longest long run is 15.3 from this fall!! I’m also hoping to race a half marathon after this coming spring!

- highest mileage peak in cc preseason 2023: 61 miles!!, typical load for the season was about 59-65, During post szn’ I had some weeks at 65 and a few a little below and am at about 60 right now, highest mileage during cc 2023 peak: 65, typically 60-65, highest mileage peak during track was 70 miles, most weeks were about 65-68 tho. Probably getting up to 75 this summer and fall 🥴, my longest long run is still from cross in 2023 tho and was 14.42 :))

- highest mileage track 2023 peak: 58, typically 47-53

- highest mileage peak cc 2022: 52 miles, typical load 40-49

- mileage 2021 cc peak: 41, typically 35-39

- mileage track 2022 peak: 45, typically 39-43

- mileage !goal! peak for track 2023: 55! Mostly 45-53

- mileage goal reached!! I got up to 58 mpw!

- PRs (updated) (you can ignore this, but just to give an idea of the level that I am competing at to understand where I might come from when talking about different runners or books or training!!) (from track freshman and sophomore years): 5k: 16:30, 10k: 34:34, cc 5k: 16:51 (at first meet of season , this is technical time bc course was long), 1500m: 4:41 *1500 from freshman year*. (Ran during summer preseason workouts): 3k: 9:43, 5k (somehow during a fartlek): 17:08, workout paces: easy run: 6:35-7:15, tempo: high 5s and low 6s, 1k interval: 3:12, 1k repeat: 3:03-07

~ Update on: goals that seem reasonable for track this year based off workouts this past cross season!:

~ By the end of this past track season (2024) I was in shape to run around 16:15 5k and 34:20 or lower 10k and if I focused on the 1500 for a few weeks probably around a 4:22 or so. Was in great shape by the end of the season but didn’t perform as well as I would have liked at nationals.

~ By the end of track season 2023 I was most likely in shape to run 4:50s or faster pace (mile pace) for a 1500, for the 5k I was in shape to run in about 16:30s but I was focusing on the 10k and only ran it once at the beginning of outdoor! 3k I’m not sure what shape I was in but probably somewhere between 9:30s-50 but I never got to run it this year. For 10k I was in shape to run 34:40s or a little faster but I did not race well when running it again at the end of the season. I also did fall on a rock right before indoor conference and had to sit a week out and that negatively impacted all of my running and times for awhile. (I had to get stitches on my kneecap but nothing was damaged outside of needing stitches!)

~ I also had transferred in the spring semester and am loving my new school, team, and coaches!

~ As far as cross country, my team just made nationals and I ran a new PR in the 20:40s ish! (6k)
