Supposedly failed concepts that saved the day.

So myself and a group of guys from work who all shared an interest in getting into d&d gathered some basic materials to start off our journey into table top gaming.(dice, starter kit, books, etc.) Once we got through the task of learning how to make our first characters, I had emerged with a dragonborn bard with a black Dragon ancestry. The idea behind it was with his harsh gravely voice and a lute that he would use his bardic magic to power, he would spread heavy metal, a new genre of music, throughout the realm. As our DM was the only one with experience he was quick to explain that the concept was flawed, but didn't fight it too much because I had written it so well that he wanted to see where i would take it. Fast forward to my groups third or fourth session, and we are stuck in a tavern surrounded by enemies all trying to get in. One enemy managed to get in before we had barricaded the entrances and our to token evil characters have captured him and begun to slowly dismember our captive while also violating him in every way possible as a ritual to gain favour with their cults patron. This left my character along with the other two support characters to try to keep the enemies out. We managed to secure all but the front door completely, and it was only a matter of time before the group of enemies managed to push the door open so, after failing to get our actual combat muscle to stop their hideous ritual and help save the day, I positioned my Dragonborn bard and told the two holding the door to get out of the way and let them in. They did this and the the door immediately swung open and three enemies partially fell through. They didn't go prone but they were definitely off balance enough for them to not be able to make any immediate action against us. With this small window I take advantage of my black Dragon ancestry and spray my acid breath at the doorway. After rolling 2 consecutive nat 20s and maximum damage on my damage rolls I successfully melted the front most enemy, felt serious burns to the second making him turn tail and run, and blinded the last one with the fumes from the acid. At this point the Kenku rogue in our group who was too chicken(hehe) to help until most of the enemies were already routed finally struck and killed the enemy who tried to get away which left the last living one to us. We captured and interrogated him. He was very angry due to me basically crippling him for the rest of his life due to his burns, so I pulled another successful roll and persuaded him to forgive me and give me information on his organisation. After all this our resident evil characters finally finished their blood orgy/ritual and they're great diety was so pleased it gifted us a slightly warm breeze....needless to say, after this, my party no longer questioned my judgement when it comes to putting together a viable character.

TLDR:Acid breath can make any failed concept viable.
