Rook and Davrin’s Rules for Dealing with Darkspawn

1. Yes this list is common sense. Yes it’s getting written down anyway. (Seen too many people tainted to leave it unwritten.)

2. Keep your distance.

3. Wear a helmet or head covering.

4. If any darkspawn blood gets on your clothes, burn it. (Clothes are replaceable. People aren’t.) Do not breathe the smoke.

5. Keep your distance. Let us handle the up close and personal. Take out the ranged bastards.

6. Be aware of what’s behind you at all times. (Some darkspawn are surprisingly sneaky.)

7. Ghouls are fragile, but fast. Don’t let them close in.

8. Don’t touch darkspawn weapons.

9. Tell us immediately if you get hit. Sometimes there’s a chance for luck to beat the blight corruption.

10. Don’t play the hero. That’s a Warden’s job. (Let us take the worst of it. Please.)

I hate to be that person, but I just realized that between the beginning of DAO and DA4 there's about a 23/24 year gap, so you know... how to put it-

I don't think HoF and Alistair during Veilguard will be alive (or in good shape anyway), unless in the time between DAI and DA4 they have found a cure for the Calling.

David Gaider said in this 2012 interview:

"Thirty years is the maximum that you could probably expect. It's going to vary for an individual according to their willpower and the level of their interaction with the darkspawn. During a Blight you can expect that the Gray Wardens are going to have shorter lifespans. Outside of a Blight the Gray Wardens would tend to live longer. We have instances in the game of people going on their Calling after five or ten years quote shouldn't be taken as gospel, that's the way I like it. "

And probably everyone who became Gray Warden in the time between Awakening and the first act of DA2 will also be close to their Calling in Dragon Age the Veilguard.

So I’m playing back through Veilguard with Eth’renan and i got this. It’s in the prologue and usually I kill the Venatori in this room quick enough that I don’t get the full dialogue (I play on Storyteller and Keeper because I love games but I am Bad at them, so these four enemies die very quick)

So I get this and I’m thinking “huh. I wonder what happened!”

Then Varric says this:

And I remember Adamant Fortress was a thing.

I just imagine Eth’renan cringing and going “yeah wasn’t the Wardens brightest moment. Fucking morons.”
