2016 Fic in Review

I was tagged by the ever lovely @skyler10fic and @caedmonfaith. 

total number of completed stories:

A lot. Published on AO3 stands at 37, but one of those is a collection of drabbles boasting 56 individual stories and also there are things on my tumblr that haven’t migrated over to AO3 yet. 

total word count:

Per AO3, this number stands at 61,531 words. However, as above, there are things that haven’t migrated from my tumblr over there yet.

looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?

I ... fell into a new fandom and discovered a passionate and beautiful group of creators and just ... became super prolific. I was expecting a slow fic year, but look at me gooooo. 

what’s your own favorite story of the year?

Ah. Hmm. This is hard, because I wrote a lot of things that I really liked this year, but tbh, I think ... probably one of the last things I published this year - Archangel Flare - because it’s a departure for me (writing an actual AU!) and because people seemed to really really like it. I am also hugely pleased with my Firefly/DW crossover - Out of the Black.

did you take any writing risks this year?

I joined a new fandom... that’s always risky. And then I had the audacity to be upset about the ending of the source material and things got a bit heated for a while. I don’t think I was writing really risqué things, but you know, there’s no accounting for everyone’s taste. 

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year?

This year? Finish the goddamn IRBB fic, write the next chapter of my reincarnation AU, finish Archangel Flare, write more than a cute drabble for my new rarepair, have enough time to write The Importance of Being Tatsuki, as well as helping @gunnerpalace finish Grounded. Finish the remix for @perfectlyrose‘s fic. Actually succeed at Nano. 

I’d also like to become a more disciplined writer instead of the mess that I currently am. If anyone has any ideas on how to help with that, I am all ears. 

best story of the year?

Gonna go with Street Corner, 2am from a Doctor Who perspective, and probably.... Incendiary Devices from a Bleach perspective. 

most popular story of the year?

Ah well. This is a loaded question. My most popular story this year was Unsubstantial - but it is mostly as popular as it is because of the line of discourse about the ending of Bleach underneath it, instead of the fic itself, so. However, I do like it. 

Within the Doctor Who fandom, my most popular story was probably Street Corner, 2am. 

story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Hands down, my hollow-centric think piece. I really like this story and you all should read it and give me the validation I so desire.

most fun story to write:

Hmmm. 

Almost anything that involved Ichigo and Rukia fucking is always a good time, and I always really enjoy writing the same sort of things for the Doctor and Rose.

most sweet story:

A whack of these drabbles are really sweet, but I’m particularly fond of Rabbit Heart. It’s adorable and I love it. 

”holy crap, thats wrong, even for you!” story:

Well. Given that I don’t write things I don’t like to read ... I suppose if I have to provide an answer, probably this drabble specifically, as it’s dub con and not usually my writing wheelhouse, but @swingsdown asked and I provided. 

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters & most unintentionally telling story:

Provenance of Truth and then subsequently The Angels Dragged My Throne. I was having a really hard time with the end of Bleach, and both of those ended up being remarkably cathartic, and gave me the ability to contextualise the ending for myself. 

hardest story to write:

Sleep on the Right Side of the White Noise, the nakama!ptsd drabble I wrote for an anon. 

biggest disappointment:

How little I wrote for the Doctor Who fandom this year. I’ve missed my space children and I’ll come back to them, I hope. 

biggest surprise:

I never would have seen myself writing adultery or an AU about not!dying in space or any of the things I wrote for my angsty sword children this year. I am also completely floored by how much my writing has tightened up and improved over the course of the last twelve months - and that is honestly mostly thanks to my hell chat ladies.
