I’m fascinated by the characterization, intricate connections to the overarching narrative, and the sci-fi elements in each of these episodes. But definitely I have a favorite among them, as a matter of personal preference. I’m curious to see which of the three you guys enjoyed most (or were most frightened by). Feel free to reblog or reply with the reason behind your decision.

Miranda Pryce (Wolf 359)/Manuela Dominguez (the magnus archive)
There is an implication of Manuela Dominguez 's statement is that she is a woman into other women. And also like a scientist before she becomes an Astronaut. And like Women in aerospace in general aren't exactly common, and they meet at a conference before Manuela becomes an avatar of the dark, they both get along and have a very short relationship, and there is talk of sending her into space for Goddard because she's super smart and qualified .. but like they really clashed about how they saw the future of their work and well mixing business with pleasure is never a good idea it ended badly and Manuela went off to join a fear cult.
Pryce calls Cutter up at like midnight or later: "Hello?" Pryce: "She stole my eyes, Marcus" Cutter: "Whaattt?" Pryce: "The bitch Manuela, took my spare eyes, when she moved out." Cutter: *trying not to laugh* Cutter: "Wow, She was very fiery, wasn't she?" Cutter: She really left you in the dark, didn't she? *Bursts out giggling*

Is that JORDAN GONZALES ? Oh, no, that’s SEBASTIÁN DOMINGUEZ-HERRERA, a TWENTY-SEVEN year old MUSICIAN and NIGHT TIME RADIO HOST at VALPOFM who uses HE/HIM pronouns. They currently live in SANTA MOENDA in VALPARAÍSO, and the character they identify with most is ERIC MATTHEWS from BOY MEETS WORLD. Hopefully they find their own little paradise here in el país de los poetas !
tw : spiders and snakes !
tl;dr : third adoptive sibling to luna and javier dominguez-herrera. son of a mexican scream queen & tejano rockstar. cute dumb exciteable music junky who’s way too intense sometimes. the kind of person who acts like you’re his best friend even though you just met, and he means it. struggles w/ some issues mainly regarding not always being as talented and paling in comparison to the rest of his family but mostly… someone who’s very confident in himself & his identity and doesn’t shy from taking risks. can be a little weird and offputting, but there’s never really any malice behind it. he’s just a Weird Little Freak even if he is endearing.
basics :
full name : sebastián luis dominguez-herrera nicknames : seb, seba ( by his siblings & close friends ), his stage & radio name is just sebastián herrera for ease of use age : twenty-seven pronouns : he/him place of birth : miami, florida date of birth : 06/05/199X star sign : gemini
height : 5’7 scars : he was very sheltered growing up… accidents did not really happen tattoos : so many im not even sure where to start. lots and lots of different ghosties and creatures from folklore. both his arms are covered in sleeves that go all the way from his collar down to his hands, which he’s been working on since he was teenager. there aren’t as many on the rest of his body ( namely because he just hasn’t lived enough life to get them everywhere yet ) but he has plans that by the time he’s an elderly person he will have his whole body covered. except maybe his face.  piercings : earlobes on both ears, though he usually only wears an earring in one ; conch ear piercing on left side other distinguishing features : n/a
career : musician ( anotha one ! ), nighttime radio host at valpofm career claim : think angel face by stephen sanchez-esque, and also the marias cinema and submarine which he did w/ luna education : n/a
aesthetics : deep purple pomegranate staining your mouth and hands ; the crackling of a record as it plays through good speakers ; the cool feeling of night time air on your skin as you step off a warm stage ; a red haze of smoke cascading around a bar ; the hustle and bustle of many bodies in one kitchen, full of laughter and sweet singing voices ; rose petals left in a path leading you somewhere romantic ; a dark movie theatre with red velvet curtains ; the gentle sound of acoustic guitar, of low piano notes, of a soft voice ; a smile that makes you feel immediately comfortable ; the darkness that envelopes you on a beach at night, drawing you towards something hopeful on the horizon ; candlelight flickering over pages of sheet music strewn across a dark oak desk ; a table full of food and loved ones ; dark snakes writhing together in a glass case ; the gentle hum of night in a radio station ; never quite feeling like you’ll be enough, but loving yourself anyway currently playing : almost ( sweet music ), hozier ; the take over, the breaks over, fall out boy ; menswear, the 1975 ; american cliche, finneas ; strangers, mt. joy
traits : airheaded, easily distractable, charming, friendly, kind, enthusiastic, passionate, morbid, flaky, loyal
biography :
I : can you state your name, age, and how long you’ve been living in valparaiso, for the record ?
S : a slow grin breaks out across his face as sebastián takes a seat across from the interviewer. making himself comfortable in the chair. there’s not even a little bit of hesitation in his movements. he’s been in the spotlight for what feels like his whole life ; a camera pointed in his face does nothing to spark nervousness. his arm comes to rest against the back of the chair. “ sebastián dominguez-herrera. i just got here, like, a few days ago. oh── and i’m twenty-seven. “
I: let’s start at the beginning : where were you born ? what was your family like ?
S : “ i was born in miami, technically, but i don’t remember being there at all, because i was adopted to veracruz, mexico when i was only a few months old, and mostly, i grew up there and in new york city. “ he explains, in fragments as the memories come to him, tilting the chair back so the front legs hover dangerously in the air. sebastián doesn’t seem to notice. “ my mom is a famous scream queen. you might recognize her as gale from scream, “ he’s clearly very proud of his family’s accomplishments, “ and my padre is a famous tejano musician ; a latin american rockstar. they adopted me so my older brother, javier, could have a sibling because they were trying to have another kid but it just wasn’t working out for them, at least until they had my younger sibling, luna, but she was an accident. we always called them the miracle baby because of it. “ a pause, “ i wanted to be a lot like my older brother when i was a kid. he was so cool. . .── like in a band, and rode motorcycles, and all this awesome stuff that seemed so cool when i was a teenager. he’s still pretty cool, but now i know he’s afraid of snakes and spiders and shit so he’s less cool. “ seba is playing coy, but the child that lives inside of him still desperately wants javi to think he’s cool, too. it’s part of the reason he’s made the jump to valparaiso : see, everyone, i can also live impulsively. i can also move countries on a whim. weirdly enough, despite his self-assurance, sebastián feels an itch to prove himself, like his whole life he’s just been waiting for opportunities to come to him instead of seeking them out.
I : what kind of kid were you ? what was your childhood like ?
S : “ i think a lot of people would tell you i was demonic and raised in a house that was the same. “ he laughs, light and easy. “ luna remembers getting bullied── like a lot── because our family was weird, and our mom was being accused of being a witch, but i guess i thought about it differently when i was younger. i thought it was so cool that everyone was afraid of us, like we had some kind of power that they didn’t. i think i also just thought they were jealous. like my mama was in the movies that they were watching, and my papa was on the radio that they were listening too, and then they were mean to us ? “ he scoffs a little. “ our parents pulled us out of school to homeschool us instead, and it worked fine for me. i mean the teachers didn’t like me anyway.  i was really chatty, and never knew how to stay still. i couldn’t focus in school for the life of me ; of course that always gets you labelled as someone who misbehaves. i liked it way better at home because i could just follow my parents around and see what they were doing. with my dad that usually ended up being music stuff, and so while luna read their scripts and books, i was learning what made a good song. we all just kind of hung out together. “
I: what was the most defining moment of your life ? how has it impacted you personally ?
S : he thinks about it. there’s never been one single moment that sebastián can point towards that he would consider the thing that changed his life, at least not yet, but there are a few little stops along the way that he thinks had an impact on who he is today. “ the move to new york was a big one for me. “ he admits, “ leaving our family, and our community, even if they were starting to get mean ; it was weird to be so far from what we had known most of our lives. “ that was probably the first thing that clued sebastián into the weird feeling that settled into his stomach. the second ? a call from his biological mother.
“ see, my biological mother gave me up because she was only sixteen when she got pregnant with me, and she wasn’t ready for kids. but by the time i was in my teens she would’ve been . . . “ he pauses. terrible with math, he tries to figure it out for a moment before giving up, “ anyway, she was older. old enough to have her own family, with her own kids and a husband and stuff. she wanted to get to know me, since i was her first kid. she kept in contact with my parents over the years, just to know i was doing okay, and they were really open to the idea of her flying in to meet me, but only if that’s what i wanted. i want to really emphasize that, “ he leans forward, suddenly serious, “ my parents never made me feel like i was adopted. they just wanted me to have my own choice in what i did with my life──. . . like, they didn’t think it was fair to stop me from having a relationship with her if i wanted to, which was probably really hard for them. “ the thought pops out, and he lets out a soft ‘ hmf ‘ before continuing, “ so she flew to new york and we met for lunch and it was. . . weird. i think especially for the time i was in my life, where i was questioning so much about myself already── you know, preteens── she had the mom haircut and she spoke to me like a mom would and i couldn’t get it out of my head that she was so nice but she gave me up. “ he knows, obviously, that she didn’t do it because she wanted too ; but at the time, it was the first time that sebastián had been exposed to the ideas that maybe there was a personal reason for it too. “ they weren’t really easy feelings to deal with. i still think about it a lot. she wishes me a merry christmas every year, and stuff, but after a few years of hearing about her other life i realized just how hard it was to keep up a relationship like that with someone who didn’t know me the first fourteen years i was alive. it's impossible to feel close with her at all. “
there’s another couple seconds of silence, his mood soured just slightly talking about it. it’s not that he holds any particular dislike for his biological mother── he knows that it’s not her fault they were in this scenario, and they were both better off. she made the right call. but it’s still left him with a sense of unease about himself── which, unfortunately, is only destined to get worse. “ there was also last summer. “ it’s fresh enough in his mind sebastián doesn’t really want to focus on it. it’s the same story as always : some girl, a whirlwind romance, and a broken heart. he was always known as being a bit of a loverboy ( in the loosest sense of the term ), and carried his reputation proudly, but he’d been head over heels for her. and she just left. it definitely threw a lot of things into question── again. he shrugs. “ it’s kind of stupid. otherwise, i don’t really know what else i would talk about. “
I : what is your job ? why did you chose to be in that specific area of employment ?
S : “ i’m a musician, but i’m not as successful as the rest of my family. yet. “ seba does sometimes worry he’ll never have the same list of accomplishments that the rest of his family seem to ; that maybe the creative talent they have just doesn’t run in his blood in the same way, and he’s doomed to be the black sheep forever. that’s never stopped him from being their number one supporter. none of that, after all, would be their fault. it was just the cards he was handed. “ my first album just came out last year and i’ve done some stuff with luna, but i’m not aiming to be famous. i already know what that’s like. i just really love music. “ and it’s true. the way he navigates the industry, and music criticism in general. . . for someone so dense, it’s borderline impressive. on air is the only time sebastián sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, even if he is always speaking with an audacious level of blind confidence in himself. “ i think i’d really be comfortable just doing radio for the rest of my life. it’s a lot of fun ! i’m a night owl anyway so i don’t mind the weird, late hours, and it gives me the chance to kind of hone my craft at the same time. “
I : what’re you doing in valparaiso ? do you plan on staying ?
S : “ luna came here because the university had the best program for folklore that she could find, and javi ended up following after her when our mom asked him to. i stayed behind in veracruz to work with our dad for a while but. . . “ he trails off, and then his face breaks out into another wide grin, “ i guess i got kind of bored. i thought maybe it was time for a change, you know, work on my music in a difference place. turns out valpofm’s night time radio host is retiring and he knows my dad pretty well so. . . “ widening his arms, seba gestures to himself, as if that’s all the explanation needed, “ here i am. “
quickfire facts :
the third dominguez-herrera sibling ! seba is adopted but was adopted as a baby so he basically grew up raised alongside javi and luna as if he was their flesh and blood. he has feelings about his biological mother but will tell you with 100% certainty that the dominguez-herreras are his family.
drives a motorcycle. javi taught him how because growing up seba always asked him for rides and then once he was old enough to get his license it seemed like a natural fit. probably on the lookout to buy one in valparaiso now that he’s here.
seba is also a trans man. his pronouns are he/him ! he also very much likes women & femmes but isn’t closed off to the idea that love, to him, could come at any time so he doesn’t always like to stick himself with labels when it comes to sexuality.
( snake tw ) owns 3 snakes all named after demons : lilit, asmodeo and belfegor. did work very hard to make sure his paperwork was all in order before he shipped them to valpo so he could have his little friends with him.
though he’s not as into all of the reading and storytelling behind the myths and legends that kind of haunted his family growing up, he definitely embraces that morbid side of them. would love if someone told him he seems like he’d be in a cult. loves horror movies and that stuff.
that being said though : WHORE ! opposite to both luna and javi he has been hurt in the past after opening up his heart so quickly and easily to someone he realized he couldnt trust so now he just assumes going into every relationship that they’re just there for a good time ! not a long time ! hes starting to get a little worried that he isn’t long-term settle down material as he gets older and he’s trying to avoid spiraling about it by just turning a blind eye to the problem 🥰 but he’ll be the most fun you’ve ever had for the 3 month whirlwind of a relationship you’re in together. love songs & flowers & thoughtful ( see : intense ) dates before he’s like well this has been real ! bye ! very much the kind of person that makes you feel like you’ve been best friends/lovers your whole life even though you just met yesterday.
name an instrument and he can play it. if he can’t play it he can probably figure it out. mainly he sticks w/ guitar and piano, but he loves using things to make sound. his solo stuff tends to be very oldies-inspired ( if anyone’s listened to stephen sanchez, much like that ) and him and luna do a lot together that they release but pretend they don’t know who it is ( even though the writing credits are very obviously them )
he can speak english and mexican spanish
seba learn how to focus on something challenge! hes a bit dense and struggles with keeping his attention in one place for long periods of time. did not do well in school and did not carry on into post-secondary for that reason but he tries ! he tries very hard !
not at all the kind of person to keep his thoughts and opinions to himself. what is a filter ? seba’s never heard of that and he’s never had too. he will yap for hours about nothing and the conversation will jump 40 different topics until you forget what the original plot of the movie was. . . he can’t sit still and he can’t shut up, very useful for being in radio !
wanted connections :
ok im gonna be so real i'm brain dead but i'm sure i'll come back to this at some point.

Enter Sandman thoughts
- This better be a story for the ‘grandkids’ and not because Gibbs is dying
- A new rule?
- Nice fakeout, I thought it would be the opening theme
- 1. Interesting theme 2. I don’t like how the franchise has neglected proper opening credits and the classic font
- Okay Austin Stowell, that’s a good Gibbs voice
- Franks makes his grand entrance, but his voice isn’t Franks enough. Maybe his lungs aren’t cancer-filled enough yet
- Yes, yes, he’s conventionally attractive. We know
- I like Randy already
- Gear up! It wasn’t just the Rules
- We’re going into cult territory in the first episode?
- Interesting first impression, Dominguez. Also for a Marine, she has pretty messy hair
- I feel sorry for this guy
- She doesn’t look old enough to be a 33-year-old’s grandmother. And do we really have to go the stereotypical route?
- New Shannon and Kelly for our new Gibbs
- Mute? The ‘Asians’ was bad enough :/
- Are they trying to get themselves canceled? ENOUGH
- Smitty? Reference to Schmitty?
- Never had bourbon? Gibbs?
- Is Dr. Tengalkat Native American? Hopefully he’ll be a recurring character
- So when does Vera show up again
- They could have stood further apart
- Gloves, Probie!
- A sniper’s eye. Nice one, Gibbs
- Yuck. Was that scene really necessary?
- Please tell me they become friends and there’s NO ROMANCE WHATSOEVER
- Ew, TMI
- That’s one fake-looking plane
- Ouch. Poor guy
- The theme!
- Why is it always about a girl? So Dominguez is a dead woman walking. End of the season until she gets killed or end of the show?
- No phoof even at the end?
- Put a shirt on
- Ouch. Also I don’t think that’s the same house
- No one knows what NIS is. Par for the course
- They presumably call him Dr. Tango because his last name is too complicated. I don’t like that
- Writers, a character can be a strong powerful woman without being sexist. And where’s the accent?
- What is wrong with Vera? Why are the writers doing this to her
- Stop making the good guys racist!
- So has the funeral not happened yet or what? They’re definitely talking
- Interesting tactic
- Observation!
- So she was cheating on her husband with not one but two people
- Oof. A lot to say about that conversation
- So Vera is secretly his friend?
- He better put that ring back on
Overall, these episodes were definitely engaging and the Bugs scenes were compelling. However, if the writers don’t clean up their act with the racism and insensitivity, I don’t want this show to return for a second season.

Closed the nomination form! I made a list with all nominations by category! I'll accept suggestions of stuff to move around (change a character from minor to one of the other lists, but not the other way around cause the minor list is long enough). The Main Character list is a bit awkward with 18 characters, but I'm not really willing to move any away from it even if people might disagree? Unless I see a very strong argument.
the only nominations that didn't get in were the artifacts, since people voted for those to have their own poll later on!

I need to talk about Dr. Manuela Dominguez (from The Magnus Archives). This woman Drives Me Insane. [TL; DR at the bottom.]
She is initially presented as a textbook mad scientist: a disgraced astrophysicist bent on ending the world as we know it. But with every nuance and detail introduced about this character over the course of the narrative, my understanding of her shifted. By the end, I felt as if the person she described at the beginning of her first Statement was completely divorced from the twisted thing she became— which is the repugnant truth of what happens to Fear Avatars.
Some key details from her first Statement that really struck me: 1) I can really see myself in her love for physics and her ambition. 2) Her alienation from her fanatically religious, “vicious” parents is a big contributor to her downfall, but never remotely presented as an excuse for her actions. 3) She is so utterly unrepentant.
Regarding her parents: She saw the inconsistencies and hypocrisy in their bigoted beliefs about what is “unnatural,” likely in part because, she says, “I found myself crossing that line from an early age. Although, strangely, out of everything I was, it was always my desire to pursue a scientific career that they railed against with the most energy” (MAG 135: Dark Matter).
(I could be projecting, but this line has caused me to speculate that she might also be gay. If so, it would certainly add another level of pain &/or frustration to her home situation.)
But young Dominguez disregards her parents’ ludicrous exhortations and goes on to become an an expert on dark matter (mysterious masses that cover much of the universe and do not emit, absorb, or interact with photons) and dark energy (mysterious force which may be responsible for the expansion of the universe).
It is in the process of researching these phenomena that she has a spiritual awakening of the worst kind. She soon becomes a disciple and eventually second-in-command to Maxwell Rayner, ringleader of the cult of the Dark, the Church of the Divine Host (said Host being Rayner). As a cultist, she goes on a mission aboard the vessel of allied Fears that is the Daedalus space station. There, she creates The Extinguished Sun— a sun made of dark matter, which the Church uses as a focal point in their ritual of the same name to bring about eternal darkness.
That brings us to the point where this character loses my sympathy in the same way Callum (Rayner’s partial reincarnation?) did in S5. The Extinguished Sun ritual involves keeping Marked individuals (which events in S5 lead me to fear may be predominantly children) trapped and terrified in the dark for extended periods of time, and then sacrificing them to the Dark via drowning, in a callback to the manner in which Halley/Rayner was killed/reborn as a vessel of the infinite darkness that predates time itself.
So How Am I To Cope??? Do you know how often I come across women as mad scientists in media— let alone ones who are ambiguously implied to be gay?! Not often!
But there is a possibility she kills kids, and I can’t tolerate that shite, so all I am left with is immeasurable disappointment in her lack of conscience, and in her for joining a cult instead of getting therapy, and in her parents for being dicks, and in those who have purveyed ignorance and engaged in cruelty “in the name of God” both historically and unto the modern day, and in society for the continued existence of systemic sexism (and other biases), and in the limited number of women, POC, and LGBT+ individuals portrayed as mad (and regular, marginally less fun) scientists in media, etc… It’s quite the web of inequity and suffering, stretching between this world and the fictional.
Dr. Manuela Dominguez is a character who makes me sad that there aren’t more women mad scientist characters in media. If there were, it perhaps might not hurt so much to see her progress from someone whose trials, goals, and motivations I can understand and empathize with, to an unredeemable child killer.
To clarify, I don’t believe the author’s writing of this character was bad or sexist. I don’t feel the same morose regret about what could have been when it comes to Jude Perry; I do when it comes to Agnes Montague; I don’t when it comes to Gertrude; etc. I think that Jonny intended for the audience to at least passively ponder the person that Dr. Dominguez could have been, under different circumstances. It is a feature of the writing of all the Avatars.
One of the core themes of the series is this: How do circumstances (such as economic systems, wink wink nudge nudge) shape people? Dr. Dominguez is just one of many disheartening answers to that question.
TL;DR: Dr. Dominguez started out as a victim of bad parenting, and eventually into an even more sick and twisted version of her parents, who she despised as a child for their zealotry and cruelty. But this might not hurt me so bad to think about if 1) I didn’t relate so much to her younger self, as an aspiring physicist and a sapphic trying to shake off the message that everything that brings me joy is “unnatural” and 2) if she wasn’t the first character I thought of when trying to recall women mad scientists in media.
For those who feel like looking for other fem mad scientists in podcasts, I believe Ava the theoretical physicist from Midnight Burger and doctor/assassin Vespa Ilkay from Penumbra both count. For a sane fem scientist, try the marine biologist protagonist from DOWN. If you think of any others in any kind of media, you’re welcome to respond in the comments or tags.
(I know of Poison Ivy, as well as the more sane Dr. Sattler from “Jurassic Park” and Dr. Calvin from Isaac Asimov’s “I, Robot,” and I appreciate them. You may leave them out of the replies.)

Adamson University Commence Agreement for Student Internship at Academia Sinica, Taiwan
Adamson University signed a student internship agreement with Academia Sinica, Taiwan on April 30, 2024, at the President’s Conference Room.
In a Facebook post from Adamson University on April 30, 2024, the University President, Fr. Daniel Franklin E. Pilario, CM, the Dean of College of Science, Dr. Eleanor Austria, the Chairperson of the Chemistry Department, Mrs. Katrina De Paz, the students, and their parents, attended a signing ceremony at the President’s Conference Room for the student internship program between Adamson University and Academia Sinica, Taiwan.
In Taiwan, the students will be trained by world-renowned scientists from the Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology, and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, while also conducting research for thier thesis.
Significance of Academia Sinica in scientific community
Academia Sinica is one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan known for its contributions in multiple fields of research, such as biomedical research, molecular niology and genetics, computer Science, physics, astronomy, and etc.
The institute is known for its recent breakthrough in computer science for the invention of the first 5-qubit superconducting quantum computer. In January 2024, Academia Sinica achieved another milestone of connecting the quantum computer to the internet, becoming an advancement in Taiwan’s field of computer science.
The institute is among  the leading teams of the Event Horizon Telescope, renowned for capturing the first image of a black hole, proving predictions of Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
Additionally, the institute studied amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) on a molecular level. Through the institute’s research, they found a potential approach to stop or slow down the damage they cause to patients.
Selection of Intern Students
The students were selected for the internship program in Taiwan through the recommendation of Dr. Todd L. Lowary, an adjunct professor at Adamson University and a Canadian chemist affiliated with Academia Sinica. To apply, submitted their transcript of records, CVs (curriculum vitae) and recommendation letters from other professors. The principal investigators then evaluated them through their qualifications for the program.
BS Biology students Jhem San Pedro and Sharon Allison Dominguez, along with BS Chemistry student Mearelle Kate Alfante, arrived in Taiwan on May 2, 2024. They are currently under the guidance of Taiwanese principal investigators (research advisers) who are instructing them on research projects aligned with the principal investigators' interests.
Adamson Students at Academia Sinica
In an interview with the interns on May 09, Jhem San Pedro mentioned that upon their arrival in the Academia Sinica, the principal investigators were already working on ongoiong research. The Adamson students will learn necessary lab works and techniques taught by the principal investigators to complete their thesis. Their on-the-job training is included in the process of constructing their thesis as they learn the techniques being used in Academia Sinica.
According to the interns, they’re currently working on the specialities or research interest of the principal investigator they’re being instructed under;
For Ms. Dominguez, her principal investigator is Chen-Hui Chen, who specializes on natural regeneration and enhancing the regenerative capacities of human tissues and organs.

Rev. Dr. Cecil 'Chip' Murray was L.A.'s fixer
Tumblr media
(News4usonline) - Rev. Dr. Cecil "Chip" Murray, an icon to the Los Angeles community during the 1992 riots, passed away at the age of 94 on April 5, 2024. He was the first pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles in 1977. During his time as a pastor, he transformed a small congregation of 250 into an 18,000-person church with multi-million dollar community and economic development programs that brought many jobs and housing, according to the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture website. We are humbled and honored to continue the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. Murray. His family has asked donations to be directed to Rev. Murray’s Circle of Support: https://t.co/D9ZLdZ2KhG. We will share the livestream for his funeral services here next week. pic.twitter.com/Udvosn5iSQ— USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture (@usccrcc) April 18, 2024 He later was appointed as the John R. Tansey Chair of Christian Ethics in the School of Religion at the University of Southern California. Dr. Anthony Asadullah Samad, who is the Executive Director of the Mervyn Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute (MDAAPEI) on the campus of California State Dominguez Hills, said Rev. Murray was a lot of things to a lot of people. “Reverend Murray was not just a icon in the Los Angeles community,” said Samad. “Not just the  Black Los Angeles community, but the Los Angeles community. But he was also a personal mentor.” Samad first joined  First AME Church in 1981 and when he left the church, Rev. Murray was a senior pastor at the time. The significance that Rev. Murray was that he continued the tradition of Black radical Christian theology from a church that had religious activists. “What projected First AME into the national limelight was on the day that the four police officers were pronounced not guilty, April 29, 1992,” said Samad. “Tom Bradley was holding a town hall gathering, sort of to pray for the city. And we came out of the church and the church was on fire.” California mourns the passing of Reverend Dr. Cecil Murray—a landmark civil rights activist and spiritual leader. He was a tower of strength for the Black community in Los Angeles. His impact will continue to be felt by millions for generations to come.https://t.co/wS67HnFJsc— California Governor (@CAgovernor) April 11, 2024 First AME Church became “the center of the frustration and expressions of the Black community” according to Samad. However, it was not just the Black community that Rev. Murray had a direct impact on. He also reached out to the Latino and Asian communities as well. Under Rev. Murray's leadership, First AME Church grew from roughly 250 members to more than 18,000 members by the time he retired 27 years later. “Cecil Murray basically took what was a dying congregation and built it over a 28-year period,” said Samad. Rev. Murray was born on September 26, 1929, in Lakeland, Florida. He grew up in the segregated South. He graduated from Florida  Agricultural and Mechanical University and then earned his PhD from the School of Theology at Claremont College. After the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Rev. Murray and First AME Church began to rebuild the L.A community. “Through a grant from State Farm, (they) built a nonprofit called L.A. Renaissance that began to build housing and build businesses and rebuild what had been destroyed in the L.A. riots of 92,” said Samad. “So first AME became the go-to location for community mobilization. And Reverend Chip Murray was that focus.” “Rev. Murray became the model for using religion and using churches to advocate for the poor,” Samad added. After Rev. Murray retired from the First AME Church after 27 years, he then began teaching his theology around social advocacy and fighting social injustice where he would teach young ministers how to use the church to address social injustices. I was honored to celebrate the distinguished career of Rev. Cecil Murray. Incredible legacy of bridging communities and uplifting our world. https://t.co/HBHXiWfMtl pic.twitter.com/aekja08DGo— Carol Folt (@PresidentFolt) September 23, 2022 He also had a center named after him, the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement. The center helps faith leaders to transform underserved communities. But besides being an icon to the greater Los Angeles community and being the backbone of the Black residents during a time of instability, Rev. Murray was a person with a good heart, Samad said. “He was a beautiful person, always positive. There was a lesson in every engagement with him in terms of helping people sort through differences, mitigating conflict,” Samad remarked. “He never closed the church doors when the community was trying to address an issue.” “So he was a person who basically sought to bring people together and he'll be remembered for that. He'll be remembered as a builder, as a peacemaker. Blessed are the peacemakers, so that they will inherit the earth. So that will be his legacy and his memory,” added Samad. Cory Wharton is getting real about how past infidelity continues to play a role in his relationship with Taylor Selfridge.
“Taylor doesn’t trust me because I cheated on her five years ago and I regret it every day,” Wharton, 33, revealed on the Wednesday, March 27, episode of Teen Mom: Family Reunion. “I need to do the best I can do to make sure to rebuild that trust between me and Taylor because right now, it’s dragging us down like an anchor.”
The revelation came when the cast was participating in a couple’s exercise with relationship experts Dr. Mike Dow and Michaiah Dominguez.
When asked what was blocking their relationship progress, both Wharton and Selfridge, 29, agreed that their trust was not where it should be.
"In terms of trust, Cory just wants me to get over it because it happened so long ago,” Selfridge explained. “Yes, it happened five years ago but I’m not over it yet and I feel like it’s something we haven’t worked through yet.”
She continued, “I’m definitely still holding a grudge about it. I don’t forget. That’s the problem. I’ll always think there could be something. It’s hard when someone breaks your trust like that.”
Wharton and Selfridge have been together since meeting on Ex on the Beach in 2017. They share two daughters: Mila, 3, and Maya, 20 months. Wharton also shares daughter Ryder, 7, with ex Cheyenne Floyd.
During the exercise, Floyd, 31, was surprised by her ex’s openness about his past mistakes.
"I don’t know if everybody here knew about the cheating and I think that now that the cheating has been put on the table, it just brings up all those past emotions for Taylor,” Floyd said. “Cory has to realize that cheating can be really hard to work through and I feel like he doesn’t have the proper tools to work through it right now by himself.”
In a separate chat with costar Tyler Baltierra, Wharton expressed his belief that cheating isn’t the only issue he has to work through with his longtime girlfriend.
“Early in our relationship, I made a dumb mistake and I’m paying for it to this day,” he said. “But there’s more to me and her than just my issues.”
Selfridge appeared to agree when chatting exclusively with Us Weekly before Teen Mom: Family Reunion’s season premiere earlier this month. She also provided a status on their relationship after cameras wrapped.
“We both have our deep-rooted issues with different things that kind of play a part in our relationship,” she told Us on March 5. “I don’t want to give anything away, but we’re definitely still together, I will say. We definitely did not separate.”
