i really hate [PROTOTYPE2]'s campaign. i hate how they decided to make Alex Mercer a bad guy even though he's saved New York as well as the fact that James Heller is a good guy...I like how they made the second game infinitely funnier than the first game but it sucks that they only restricted that to the BLACKWATCH and GENTEK scientist/troop radios...

if Alex Mercer and James Heller was at least working together they could've made it so that A&J had hilarious dialogue because the dialogue with BLACKWATCH and the rest are absolutely lung haemorrhaging. it doesn't matter if Heller and Mercer were good or bad, it'd still be funny. despite all that the story could've been much better if they were working together rather than against. i realised this after replaying [PROTOTYPE2]...

if they were working together, a second outbreak of the Blacklight virus, only modified, a controlled release by BLACKWATCH and GENTEK after a few years just like Alex lied about in the beginning in the actual game, except it's real. have the same thing happen in New York, again.

James would had to have motivation, just like Alex did in the comics. BLACKWATCH released the modified Blacklight, and he discovers it on his own. They killed his wife and daughter. As soon as he gets arrested and illegally sentenced to death by BLACKWATCH, Alex breaks him out and gives him powers. Alex would convince Heller on his side, and you would carry out his bidding, destroying BLACKWATCH, GENTEK and the virus by the end, for good. At least in New York.

that option isn't that great, but leagues better than what they had in the actual game. it got convoluted and contradictory by the end. Alex controls infected, but the infected attack the Evolved sometimes. Galloway was an double-crosser, but not even a smart one, getting killed by Mercer because she was obviously helping Heller. (albeit along with other Evolved). Alex had only a handful of infected help him during the final fight, even though he was SOOO motivated to "help" humanity. also they didn't really explain why Heller couldn't Hunt Rooks immediately, they just showed that he couldn't.

Dr. Koenig (GENTEK Scientist, also Evolved) didn't explain why he hated Heller. probably racist.

Colonel Rooks (leader of BLACKWATCH) is a diagnosable psychopath who hates Heller with a passion because Riley was killed by him, but spares him because he has a daughter. Rooks also has a daughter, which is why Heller spares him as well, despite him burning Heller alive in the test chamber. I don't know about you, but after I killed that many people and find the one that tortured me with fire, I don't care if he has 200 children. i'd kill them too.

i have been in a real bad artblock and had so much mental exhaustion lately so i decided to do what usually helps when i’m in those Moods, which is to make silly doodle comics!! this time feat. prototype characters and anti-capitalism. since they’re my characters now they have to be anti-capitalist and i have justifications for each of them from what limited personality they’re given in-game, but that’s below Keep Reading as well as my other Thots

Dr. Bradley Ragland: his first line is “my medical opinion’s not for sale” and also he stopped working for GENTEK bc of moral reasons, despite the fact that they probably paid him A Lot. i think he deals with a lot of frustration with the situation he’s in but that’s for another post!

Dana: she’s a journalist and jumps at the opportunity to expose GENTEK for their awfulness. that’s about it. god i wish prototype characters got more Actual Dialogue they’re good in Concept. she’s just so chill with her brother murdering military (which, well, same) until he starts talking about how he eats them and gains their memories (which is fair, it does sound very crazy)

Alex: eats amoral scientists who justify their actions with “they didn’t pay me to feel” and “morality wasn’t my job”(<-- Alexander J. Mercer himself) and i imagine he’d be like “:/ i don’t like the sound of this ‘money’ thing”. also alex is quiet here because he’s in nonverbal mode. he’s autistic ok. am i projecting? absolutely.

anyways anyone else agree that instead of kidnapping Dana, the hunter just destroys Dana’s friends apartment and Dana has to relocate to Bradley’s clinic and they become a proper trio? like. you know. more character interaction. i actually have Some Thoughts on how i’d give Bradley more of an arc. also i’d make him more of an eccentric guy - i mean he did put up whole anatomical drawings of leader hunter in like less than a day and is really chill with Alex’s whole Consuming thing. Dana finds Alex attempting to consume a toaster while Bradley observes and takes notes, and when she asks what they’re doing Bradley’s like “i asked what else he can consume and he didn’t know so we’re testing a bit of everything. it’s very intriguing” Alex is ok with it bc he’s curious too and he likes to eat things (he did get very distressed that one time he couldn’t eat a thing and immediately went to Bradley to find out how to eat it)

pointless rambling done. i am tired and just typed at whatever came to mind, but i am very passionate about prototype apparently! one day i’m going to have to make a whole re-write of it, both 1 and... 2. especially 2.

Before Penn Station [permutation 1] Ch. 2

Hi guys! I finally managed to get this done! I hope that you all like this chapter, and I replied to the person on ff.net. I wasn't sure if I should also give the reply to the concerns here too, but I'll answer here in the notes too.

Here's the chapter below the cut!

After shoving his way through an entire crowd, Alex doubles back as fast as he can, ducking around a corner then back over the rear entrance of Bad Weather. Ignoring the irritated and outraged looks he got as he ran past people, he quickly started scaling the nearest building, eyes alert for Desmond's telltale presence.

He managed to catch a glimpse of it as Desmond teleported (because what else do you call it when someone straight up disappears in broad daylight?) somewhere else, a low computer noise the only thing he left behind. Alex felt his lips pull as his mouth widened to a cheek-to-cheek grin.

He'd been just a bit late, but he'd managed to find Desmond as he was escaping, and he was only getting better at it.

Satisfied, Alex climbed back down in the nearby alleyway, dusting off his hands and wiping off the debris in his (what used to be) white hoodie. He didn't have any work to do, since today was a field-testing day, and Dana told him she'd be occupied for the better part of the day before doing some other things she had to take care of. His apartment was already clean and the idea of laying down to sleep was repulsive at this point.

Which meant he only had one other option, since he wasn't nearly desperate enough to call up his insane boss for company. Karen.

Hopefully, she was in a good mood today—he really didn't want to hear her talking about her murder scrapbook. His phone was a basic Nokia brick flip, but it worked and that's all that mattered, and he didn't pay it a second thought as he called Karen.

The phone rung four times, then Karen answered with a terse, "What."

Ah. Not a good mood then. Oh well. "You free right not?"

A loud sigh, "Unfortunately. How soon are you coming over?"

Alex shoved his way back onto the sidewalk, holding his arm up for a passing cab's attention, "I'm catching a cab now."

"I'll see you shortly then."

Alex never saw any reason to make small talk with people he wasn't interested in, so after shooting down the cab drivers' initial attempts at conversation, the trip was a short and awkward one. Pushing the money at the disgruntled cabbie, he wasn't surprised when he heard the screech of tired as the car peeled out of the lot.

Karen's apartment was on the third story, no elevator to speak of, just two sets of rickety stairs with dying bushes and potted plants littered around carelessly. Karen's door was easy to puck out, the almost gothic door knocker that sat in the center of steel ivy vines above a cheery 'Welcome!' mat was a dead giveaway.

Alex slammed the door knocker once, and waited for a few seconds as the door swung open to reveal Karen, sans makeup in a light grey bathrobe, a cup of coffee in her hand. She turned back into her apartment without a greeting once she saw it was him, yawning loudly and moving to eat her breakfast of bland scrambled eggs.

"Hey, Karen." Alex greets dryly, slamming the door after walking inside and grabbing his own mug for coffee, "You look like shit."

"Coming from you, that means nothing." She chugs her first mug then blankly sets it down to grip at her second cup, already hot. "You look like you fought a bear."

Alex scoffs, "Please, none of them were big enough for that."

"So, why'd you call me anyways? Did you need help with disposal again?"

"Nah, I already took care of that." Alex's head absentmindedly touches his right coat pocket, the inner lining pressing against his shirt. "There isn't anything left for anyone to find now."

"Then why are you here?" Karen yawns again, "Seriously, if you came here to talk about that girl you've been trying to date, then you better be prepared to hear me talk about my love life."

"Finally!" Karen shots, slamming her empty cup on the counter top loudly. "Trina dumped me last night and I've been drinking coffee to stay up and reread our chat history! She blocked me." Karen glowers at Alex, "She blocked me! I'm such a catch and she blocked me!" She looks to Alex cheerlessly. "What am I doing to drive these women away, Alex? Why can't I find love?"

'Lots of reasons.' Alex thinks, but has the sense not to say out loud. "Why'd she break up with you? Was it the murder-"

"It was the murder scrapbook." Karen lets out a long drawn out groan. "I set up my bathroom as a dark room to develop my photos, and Trina decided to surprise me with some supplied because she's a photographer too, walked in and saw them! She saw all my latest murder shots!" Karen rubs at her temples, her short blond hair choppy and ragged from it's most recent haircut. "At least she didn't scream and run like Priscilla did, but it was honestly worse. I got her to sit down see we could talk it out and she, in the nicest ans sweetest way possible because that's just how she is, told me that she was utterly repulsed by me and realized I wasn't the person she thought I was."

"Ouch."

"Yeah. I tried to convince her that this was just another part of me, y'know like a puzzle you found pieces to you didn't know existed, but she just. She walked out, Alex. And she didn't even look back, all I saw was her back and the door."

"You should find someone who isn't on the straight and narrow, Karen. I told you, you've gotta find someone who can keep up with you have going on and has their own shit going on."

"But I don't want someone who lacks morals, that's the reason I'm not dating anyone from the company, Alex."

Alex shrugs, not willing to add anything to the topic, as they'd spent many nights bitching about the absolute depravity being fostered and encouraged at Gentek. At this point, any further discussion would be beating a rotten horse.

"I just...wanna come home to a nice girl who isn't going to stab me in the back or poison me for corporate secrets. Who I can share my love of photography with, who I can share my passions with and enjoy her passions, with the benefit of rough sloppy sex! Is that too much to ask?!"

Alex shrugs, "I mean, if you asked me a few years ago, I probably would've said that you met her and the time is past. But now...I dunno, Karen. If I can run into my other half again, after fucking up my shot on three seperate occasions, there's still a chance."

Karen looks at him morosely, "You think so? You think there's still a chance?"

"Maybe. But you have to chase it, when you feel like you've met that person, otherwise you'll regret it."

"Speaking from experience?"

"Yeah." It's not said with shame or sadness. He says it so matter-of-fact that Karen has no choice but to accept it as the truth. Or at the very least, it was Alex's truth.

"Well. Ok." Karen sits up. "Thanks. You give good advice sometimes."

Alex barks a laugh, "I had to take care of Dana growing up, so I've had to give sensible advice every now and then. Just...don't expect me to do this too often."

"What, you might combust?" Karen snorts.

"Absolutely." Alex nods, but she can see the slight quirk of his lips. "I'd be nothing but meat chunks all over."

Karen laughs and a comfortable silence descends over the room. Karen is content to stare at the counter, mulling something over, while Alex gets up to get a mug from her cabinet. He already grabbed one when he came in, but it's a bland boring thing with the Gentek logo engraved on the front. He already has to deal with their bullshit on a near daily basis, swallowing from a mug with their logo almost feels like defeat. She has a couple of mugs in the cabinet that's ended up there after so many years of spending time in her space, migrated over from his apartment, and Alex chooses the familiar one with the words 'resting bitch face' on the front in black, the rest of the mug a faded crimson. Karen's coffee machine is the kind you'd find an office, but at the very least she has cream and other flavors available, for as much as she drank the stuff she wasn't all that good at roasting it.

Cup full of coffee, a spoonful of sugar and a lot of cream later, Alex returns back to the counter.

Karen sighs then taps her fingers on the counter top. "So, c'mon. Why don't you tell me about the good news?"

"What good news?"

"I mean, you sounded pretty upbeat on the phone-well for you at least. Did something go well?"

"Oh." Alex slowly grins, showing all of his teeth as it stretches from the cheek to cheek, his eyes only visible by the excited gleam. "I've been getting batter at tracking him without him being able to tell I'm near. I saw him teleporting today-and that was after he got done glowing."

Karen blows air out from her teeth, "Man, how am I supposed to take you seriously when you say shit like that? People can't glow or teleport, Alex. Do you need to take something for hallucinations or something?"

The smile oozed off his face as Alex looks down his nose at her, "This is why I rarely ever tell you thinks about him. You don't believe me."

"I mean," Karen shrugs, "You let the weirdest shit slip when you talk about him, and it sounds literally impossible. I mean-" she fumbles to gather her words. "-how am I supposed to believe you met him once, and he somehow captivated you so badly that you jumped his bones in Vermont, you somehow didn't have the sense to give him your address or phone number. Then! And this is the part that I really don't believe, but you saw him with his baby-mind you, you've literally told me that this was a guy that you slept with. Also! And this is something you told me by the way, you saw this guy eating glass and metal in a crowd without anyone else noticing. And this was somehow on the one day that you had to get a secondary copy of your dissertation to copyright the strain of virus that McMullen sold to that-who was it again?-that weird as Whister-Water-Wesky-Wesk-something dude from the company that went bankrupt and got bought up by Tricell. Mind you, you managed to see him at the exact time you were coming out, then you had to chase him down and lost him in the crowd. Literally what are the odds? I rarely ever see you lose a mark when you go hunting."

"He talks about 'the Calculations' sometimes when he's super tired or drank too much." Alex shrugs. "No idea what he means, but for some reason he says it like a title of something or an event. Won't explain it though."

"...right. Alex," Karen placles her hand on his arm. "I saw this because I care about you. Are you going crazy or something? The only person I've ever seen you chasing after is a woman, in any of the times I've been your wingwoman she's always been a dancer or a bartender, and? I've never seen her glowing or talking to another person that you've said you've seen. I really think that you might be hallucinating or something."

"He's a woman sometimes, that's all."

"He...crossdresses?"

"No."

"Then...are we even talking about the same person?"

"Who do you think I'm talking about?"

"Uh...? That girl that always wears the huge white hoodie, right?"

Alex puts a hand to his chin, "Is that the main thing that you remember him by? Do you remember anything else about him?"

"...she had really short dark hair? I dunno, Alex, she didn't really have that many distinct features and she's not all that pretty." Karen narrows her eyes, "Maybe it's just because you're biased you think she has some...beauty or whatever."

'No,' Alex thinks. 'She's not the only person that described him like this. Before I gained such a bad reputation at the bar, most patrons and employees only recognized him by the hoodie and hair.'

"Alex?" Karen waves a hand in front of him. "Alex, can you hear me?"

'Karen might've just cracked the case for me. People don't remember him as Desmond or Desiree, since he never introduces himself by either of his real names, they don't even notice the scar on his lips. Does he have some ability to hide? Is that why people only ever seem to see the hair and hoodie? If that's the case, I can use it to my advantage...'

"Alex. Alex!" Karen claps her hands once, twice, thrice. "There he goes again."

'I have a plan now. I've gathered everything to make this work, all I need to do is get Des in a romantic environment, and it'll work!'

"Karen!" Alex straightens up with a yell, smashing his hands onto the counter, startling Karen who'd been skimming a book. "You've done! That's it!"

"What's is?!"

"I figured out what I need to make him mine!"

Karen blinks, then blinks again rapidly. "H-what?"

"I'm going to get ready, Karen." Alex gives her his full toothy, cheek to cheek grin. "I greatly enjoy speaking with you. See ya!"With that he turns and strides out her apartment, making sure to close the door behind him.

Karen rolls her eyes, "Always with the dramatic entrances and exits…"

Author's Notes: Karen was implying that Alex could win in a fist fight with an actual bear, but Alex was talking about the sexy gay kind. Karen has lost multiple girlfriends to her murder scrapbook, she always makes sure to cover her tracks and let her exes know that if they try to turn her in, she will kill them. Karen and Alex were dating before he entered Gentek, and she was actually his link into the company, she's on his team working on is counteragents and immunizations. Alex doesn't have that many members on his team, but the few that does all specialize in things that he doesn't work on, so he doesn't have to worry about anyone taking credit for his work.

No one has ever entered Alex's lab, it was one of the conditions that Alex made when he became a director in the company. Also, yes Karen did imply a few things about other franchises. Shout outs to all the people that recognize it.

Dr. Alexander J. Mercer was one of the head researchers a Gentek, a biological and genetic research conglomerate that specializes in the study of viruses. Secretly, it's connected to an arm of the government called Blackwatch, an organization dedicated to the creation of bioweapons to wipe out America's enemies amd other "undesirables". Dr. Mercer was responsible for making the Blacklight Virus, already the most dangerous virus in the world, ten times more dangerous than it already was, but when he begain asking too many questions, Gentek decided he'd outlived his usefulness.

In a final act of spite, Dr. Mercer unleashes the Virus on Manhattan, guaranteeing the deaths of thousands as he's shot dead. His final thought is how his sister, Dana, an investigative reporter assisting him in investigating Gentek, is responsible for his death for failing to warn him of Gentek's betrayal in time.

Now in hell, Dr. Mercer finishes explaining this to an unimpressed Blitzo, who doesn't really follow the train of logic he used to get to blaming Dana and, moreover, doesn't really care. Dr. Mercer explains that while he had other enemies, he was certain that the virus would wipe them out regardless. He wants Dana dead specifically for "failing" and "betraying" him. Blitzo just takes the job to get the egotistical prick out of his office.

Unfortunately, there's something that neither Blitzo nor Dr. Mercer were counting on. The Blacklight Virus evolved. It had assimilated Dr. Mercer's body and memories, waking up in a recreation of his body believing that he was the real Alex. Originally driven by the same petty, vindictive urges the original Dr. Mercer was, "Alex" would assimilate countless thousands in his quest for answers and revenge, gaining their memories and eventually even their emotions with each kill. He'd eventually learn to genuinely love his sister, something the old Mercer never did. In some ways, Alex was more human than the man who created him, renouncing the old Dr. Mercer and everything he did in disgust.

He's also much more deadly. Utterly vindictive in protecting his sister, Alex is able to send I.M.P. packing in their first run in with him, even chasing them back through the portal into Hell. Alex is only stopped from slaughtering them all when a visiting Stolas blasts him out the window as a bloody smear, seemingly killing him. Alex regenerates and assimilates some nearby imps to figure out where he is.

After getting over the existential crisis of learning that Hell exists and he's in it, Mercer decides to figure out who in Hell hired I.M.P. to kill Dana and make sure they can't do it again. Disguising himself as a potential client to get in close, Alex throttles Blitzo in his office and demands to know who hired him, only not consuming him on the spot so as to avoid risking another run in with Stolas, as he doesn't know what kind of connection the two have. Blitzo doesn't remember but Moxxie is able to tell him, telling Alex Mercer that the person who wants his sister dead is... Alex Mercer.

Realizing that this is his one opportunity to get revenge on his human creator, Alex decides to counterhire I.M.P. to protect Dana while he tracks Dr. Mercer down, knowing that their methods of getting to and from Earth are the only reliable ones he has for getting home and he can't risk them dying. That just leaves Alex with the task of figuring out how to kill his already dead human counterpart.

Alex knows from his stolen memories that Sinner Demons in the Pride Ring cannot be killed by conventional means, but he's also fairly certain that no one like him has ever tried. So, before he goes tracking down any holy weapons, Alex decides to experimentally consume a Sinner and see what happens.

Unfortunately, said Sinner happens to be Alastor.

What follows is a pitched and brutal battle that levels most of a city. Alastor is notably stronger than Mercer, but Alex's regeneration and flexible shapeshifting lets him tank and evade the worst of it. However, he still struggles to close the distance against the sheer scale of Alastor's powers. Alex carefully tries to adapt and outsmart Alastor's magic while a thoroughly entertained Alastor wonders what exactly he's fighting. Eventually, Alex fakes his death by letting Alastor rip him into bloody chunks. When Alastor examines the pieces, pondering the source of tonight's entertainment, Alex regenerates around him to assimilate him.

It... doesn't work. Alex's method of consumption mixes badly with Alastor's immortality. Alastor effectively keeps regenerating inside of him, getting continuously absorbed over and over. Alex experiences these memories as they form due to constantly absorbing Alastor's mind, creating a super conducting loop of shared pain, fear, and agony split between the both of them until Alex explodes. A now genuinely terrified Alastor watches as Mercer limps away with his little remaining biomass, both recovering from the most horrifying experience of their lives.

Alex realizes that he would stand zero chance against the more powerful demons in Hell while becoming one of the few things in Hell that Alastor genuinely fears. It's a humbling and traumatizing experience for them both.

I've got more ideas for this plot, but I'm running out of steam here. I'll wait and see how people react to this.

May I request a classpect for Alex Mercer from Prototype?

Specifically, I mean the Blacklight Virus Alex Mercer, not the human Alex Mercer. The Blacklight Virus assimilates Alex at the beginning of the game and takes his identity, believing itself to be the real Alex and going by his name for the rest of the series. Virus Alex and Human Alex are two seperate characters, with fairly different goals and personalities.

Of course! Since I am not familiar with this character I had to do some research using the fandom wiki and gameplay videos. My first impression of Mercer left me torn between the Thief of Doom, Prince of Doom, or Prince of Life as possible classpects for him. My final decision was influenced primarily by his actions in Prototype 2. Explanation and analysis under the cut!

First, who is Alex Mercer? Here’s what I’ve discovered (and please feel free to correct any misinformation):

Dr. Alexander Mercer was a scientist working for Gentek investigating and creating viruses. While the scientists there were told they were finding a way to cure all disease, in reality they were creating bioweapons. When the government told Gentek to shut the program down, Gentek set about killing the scientists on the project, one by one. Dr. Mercer managed to escape the bloodshed before being cornered by Blackwatch operatives. He subsequently broke the vial of virus he had taken with him and died from his gunshot wounds, where the virus took over his body.

This series of events created the Alex Mercer of Prototype 1 and 2. Alex awakens with no memory of his life, believing himself to be Dr. Mercer himself. Throughout Prototype 1 he investigates Gentek’s plot while traversing a city overtaken by the virus, killing and consuming numerous  people along the way. His ability to “consume” others (and their abilities/memories) is just one of many new powers he has acquired due to the virus’s mutation, as well as increased strength, speed, and eventually, monstrous claws. 

By the end of Prototype 1, Mercer discovers that he is unable to die and leaves the city in order to travel the earth, contemplating if he is truly human. Due to a perfect storm of bad experiences, he comes to the conclusion that all of humanity is wicked, selfish, and irredeemable. His disillusion is so great that he decides he must wipe the world clean of human life using the virus (effectively creating a single, hivemind entity). He is eventually defeated by the protagonist of Prototype 2.

Taking all of the above into account, I would classpect Alex Mercer as a: Prince of Life.

Princes begin life hating their aspect and attempting to destroy it, due to an everyday influence that has made them opposed to it. To the ignorant observer they can appear to be their opposite aspect because of this. Paradoxically, they also utilize their hated aspect as a weapon of destruction.  As with all classpects, the Prince of Life starts out as their inverse. In this case, they start out as a Sylph of Doom. Alex Mercer is a special case, given that he was born out of Dr. Mercer’s death. However, Dr. Mercer’s personality and life still influence Alex enough that he can be considered Alex’s inverse. The Sylph of Doom is concerned with protecting and assisting disease, order, and caution. At Gentek, Dr. Mercer was a cynical man, invested in perfecting his viruses above all else. When his paranoia could not protect him or the vial he was carrying, he died and was reborn as the Prince of Life: a new, powerful, and destructive being.

The Life aspect has to do with disregarding rules, rising above the competition, and growing despite all odds. It is concerned with the betterment of both itself and others, mutating into something new. The original Dr. Mercer had a harsh childhood, which could easily have made him hate the self serving nature of the Life aspect. This character trait can be seen in full force with Alex, who moves from merely hating greed to hating all human life on the planet. At first glance, Alex Mercer is nothing but the Doom aspect, a walking viral outbreak, misfortune incarnate. Yet at the same time, he perfectly exemplifies Life. He refuses to let anyone, not Blackwatch, not Heller, hinder his plans. No matter what obstacle is in his way, he adapts and physically mutates to overcome it. Along the way, he destroys the literal lives of others in order to meet his ends. But, as with all Life players, he feels he is doing the right thing. His grand plan to infect the world is the only way to save humanity from itself. 

As a Prince of Life he would share his classpect with characters such as Ultron from the Avengers and Zathrian from Dragon Age: Origins. 

I also used the song No Children by The Mountain Goats as a reference for this analysis.

finished prototype again (people who don’t care about Edgy Kirby Game scroll on) and i got very caught up on two of Alex’s lines because i’m obsessed with this dumb video game now and i over-analyze things constantly so get ready for incoherent rambling in the Keep Reading

so the two lines are (they’re from memory and i don’t think the subtitles showed them so they might not be completely word for word): 1. “I hope destroying these things (the Bloodtox) is the right thing to do” and 2. “Damn you, Taggart. Damn you for making me do this (destroying helicopters and killing pilots to keep Taggart from evacuating)”

like, the first one is like... he’s choking and dying from the Bloodtox as he’s saying it but he knows it’d probably be a good way to fight the infection and he, Literal Virus and Bioweapon Made To Kill is wondering about what the Right Thing to do. even though if he doesn’t destroy them then he’ll die. another reason i wish the first game was much more character-driven rather than having the cutscenes’ dialogue mostly be “hi alex, do this thing, ok bye”. also couple this line with saying that Dr. Alexander J. Mercer “mistakes” were unforgivable so does he consider his own existence a mistake?? alex do you need therapy or like a juice box

ok now the second line is gonna be an Unpopular Opinion. so these pilots are not attacking, they’re just flying off to help Taggart evacuate on his orders, and once the mission ends, alex says that line. i don’t think he feels pity for the marines because they’re “just doing their job” or whatever since he knows the military is bad (he has a lot of them in his head now after all), so here’s where i’m gonna go real edgy with my interpretation: alex just straight up doesn’t like killing people. yeah this might be dumb but i dunno, he just sounds tired and lamenting that he’s being made to do this since they’re just trying to get away, and considering that the whole game forces him to fight for survival wherever he goes whether it’s the infection or blackwatch or the marines, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched? i know he talks about consuming people feeling “right” to Dana, but that’s eating, and it’s for a purpose - finding out the truth he wanted so badly. like. if he does dislike killing, that line would carry some more weight, you know? he was literally made to kill, and there he is, damning someone for making him kill. he does still think killing people is a very good problem solver, though, don’t get me wrong, he probably doesn’t even know there are other ways of solving his problems. also don’t mention the killing of karen parker to me because i honestly just find that gross. game has three female characters in total and they’re 1. sister who gets kidnapped, put in a coma, and then forgotten about rest of the game, 2. crazy creepy virus lady in Skin-Tight Science Suit and 3. ex-girlfriend who betrays you for Very Good Reasons and was clearly in a lose-lose situation, being pressured from all sides and resisting the best she could, who you then get to kill as a Reward for doing side missions. like, captain cross can infect you with a parasite and be forgiven easy peasy but karen has to die despite that her and cross are guilty of the same thing... plus on my first playthroughs of prototype i never got that scene (first got it today actually) so i was blissfully unaware and thought she just got out of the city safely and thought Good For Her!! ugh, at least they don’t show the killing. they could’ve had a side mission where you go see Dana and Dr. Bradley Ragland again to make sure they’re both okay, explain things to Dana, have a bit of Emotional Weight, and instead they waste time on that??

a final point before i end this silly post: i always thought alex was super angry all the time back when i first played it and now that i’ve played it again, i don’t see it. in game the only time he even gets full-on raging is when he’s chasing Taggart, and he gets hissy with McMullen and Randall obviously, but otherwise his dialogue is mostly like “i don’t know what’s going on but i guess i gotta kill??”, and even when he’s searching for Dana he sounds more distressed than angry. he is just an awkward 3 week old virus whose confused face is a frowny face. he’s a virus. he doesn’t know how faces work. he shouldn’t even have one!!

anyways. this isn’t me saying “your headcanons/interpretations of the character is bad”, i do think that the game tries to paint alex as a blank slate of sorts so of course people are going to have very varying grasps on his character, i just thought these lines were interesting! i love monsters who go against their supposed Inherently Evil nature. so, in conclusion, prototype 2 was a mistake
