Sometimes I wonder. Do you think that Hawkeye was aware of Trap's coping mechanisms before this conversation? The fact that Trapper is so inclined to curl up in his cot when they have downtime, facing away from Hawk, sometimes not even sleeping, just totally checked out for hours and hours on end? Those dissociating depression naps?

And do you think that more often than not, when he sees Trap in that listless state, Hawk will go out of his way to tell him the most terrible, ridiculous jokes in the world because every time, no matter how much Trapper tries to fight it, in the end he's smiling and present? And Hawk will admit that maybe it's downright selfish of him to do it—that he doesn't want to be left alone in his thoughts either—but the fact remains that he loves Trapper too much to let him stew like that. Come hell or high water, he's gonna brighten his day.

I have a disease like that kid from the secret garden and it’s directly tied to mashpoll and it gets worse the dumber the results are. Think about that next time you vote for 38 Across instead of Ain’t Love Grand. Think about that the next time you vote for Crisis over Welcome to Korea. I’ve got one foot in the grave

i have like nine hundred thousand years' worth of thoughts about how many of the 4077th really only Truly support hawkeye when his mental health struggles are "palatable" to them or being waved away (by him) as a joke. and how when he drinks too much or yells at radar or goes through a manic episode, they either don't know how to act towards him, don't know how to help him without just Stopping him (without addressing the issue), or are actively hostile to him about it. and then he has his big breakdown and they're all like how could this have possibly happened!!! sidney my beloved this is never about you.

#ive personally always seen it as#a man who feels so many huge emotions all the time#to the point where his mind subconsciously represses them by necessity#until they come sneaking out (hawks nightmare. bless you hawkeye.) when he is in a weakened state OR are forced out (gfa)#unlike basically every other character who PURPOSEFULLY and consciously represses and supresses their emotions as much as possible
@mashbrainrot
Actually yeah this is absolutely how I view the GFA amnesia at the very least - like Hawkeye's forced to repress the memory until he has enough distance to cope with it because otherwise it would fully destroy him. And yeah the other repression/psychosomatic episodes could also fit that to a less intense extent. I like how you put it, his mind repressing some of his emotions out of necessity bc they're too much, until they leak out.
Idk, I think it could be a little of both. Hawkeye consciously has to hold himself back a lot and acknowledges how close he is to the brink sometimes in jokey or less jokey contexts, occasionally lashing out/rebelling in less damaging ways as a release valve, but at times his subconscious reins his feelings in for him.
Hawkeye not being emotionally repressed as a person, but still being emotionally repressed because he's in a situation that causes him to feel impossibly intense emotions that can't be fully expressed without ruining his or others' lives.
Because to really express his true feelings he'd have to scream until his voice gave out, desert, kill a general, etc. Constantly feeling like he's barely holding himself back, keeping himself from exploding through the relatively minor shows of rebellion and antagonism towards people like Frank, and his humour. "Joking is the only way I can open my mouth without screaming."
Hawkeye's breakdown in GFA is a fitting cap for his character for many reasons, and I think this is also one of them. It just makes narrative sense, as someone who does need to express his feelings and who is trapped in a war zone, that at some point he had to fully snap and drive a jeep through a wall.
