El regreso de Marianne Faithfull en 1979 tras el disco country pop "Dreamin' My Dreams" de 1976, mostró a una cantante con otra voz, rasgada, rota, a causa de una laringitis severa y el abuso de drogas. Faithfull comenzó a trabajar con el músico Barry Reynolds, y las demos que grabaron atrajeron la atención de Chris Blackwell, que la contrató para su sello Island Records. El álbum se grabó en los Matrix Studios de Londres, y después de grabar todo el LP, el productor Mark Miller Mundy sugirió hacer la música "más moderna y electrónica", y llevó al estudio al gran Steve Winwood para tocar los teclados.

Dos buenas muestras son el tema titular del LP "Broking English", que leo que está inspirado en figuras terroristas de la época, en particular Ulrike Meinhof de Baader-Meinhof, y "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan", interpretada originalmente por Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, una historia de la desilusión de una ama de casa de clase media. La versión actualizada de Faithfull se convirtió en una especie de himno y se utilizó en las bandas sonoras de "Montenegro" (1981) y "Thelma & Louise" (1991).
