The Flash - Armageddon event
So I watched the first episode of the Armageddon event back when it had originally aired. Then for some reason or another I didn't watch the rest of the episodes and decided I would binge watch it. I finally got around to watching it this weekend. Having seen it, I will say that it is probably the best Flash arc since Bloodwork. Better then Godspeed, better than the Mirrorverse arc, and definitely much better than the forces arc. It was actually quite a lot of fun.
Thankfully I didn't think of it as a major crossover event, because it really is a Flash centered event with a few welcome guest stars. It was great to see them, although I think Katherine McNamara's Mia is probably the most wasted out of the lot and her character feels a bit superfluous to the story of Armageddon. While Despero was named as the villain of the crossover, I think its fair to saw that Thawne was really the main villain. While I know some viewers are tired of Thawne, I do think that The Flash is at its strongest when dealing with Flash vs Reverse Flash stories.
I think episode 4 is kind of the highlight episode of the arc because it is the episode truly dealing with the timeline changes that Thawne has made. Also, the episode has the most amount of guest stars with Thawne, Damien Darkh, Ryan Choi, Alex Danvers, Ryan Wilder, along with our normal Flash cast. I did enjoy some of the cast interactions, particularly Barry and Damien, which was surprisingly heartfelt and hit the right note. It was surprising that they tied in some more closure for Damien and Nora Darkh into this arc, but as someone who was following Legends of Tomorrow while both Ray and Nora were on the show, it was nice to see them both here. It was nice to see Iris and Ryan as well. Nice to see Alex interacting with team Flash. Overall, I would say that the Ray Palmer d Black Lightning guest appearances were the best ones out of the heroes in the overall arc. Brandon Routh is always a delight and Cress Williams and Grant Gustin have a nice dynamic that we already saw back in COIE.
When it comes to The Flash cast, obviously Grant Gustin does a lot of the heavy lifting in this arc because he's the one going through severe emotional turmoil. Candace Patton does a really nice job as well and I love her red haired look. Danielle Panabaker is a little underused both as Frost and Caitlin. She does have one particularly excellent scene with Thawne in the final episode of the arc. I do think that the indicators are there that DP might be leaving either after this season or at some point during this season. The recent news that she's expecting her second child along in real life, along with what the show seems to be positioning her character for. I have heard that Robbie Amell will be returning at some point this season. This is just me speculating, but he could be coming back for a sendoff for Caitlin or for Caitlin to have that emotional catharsis to move past Ronnie and move on to new things. They definitely made a point in this arc for Thawne to taunt her that she is stuck and hasn't moved on. I think that must be for a reason. I think Danielle Nicolet overdoes her performance a bit, especially in episode 3. I'm not necessarily sold on the whole Chester and Allegra romance angle they seem to be setting up, but I don't mind it. I don't know what is with the obsession with Frost and Chillblaine but that might be an exit strategy for Frost if DP is leaving. Tony Curran seemed to quite enjoy his turn as Despero, getting to ham it up. Tom Cavanaugh is always great as Thawne and likewise with Neal McDonough as Darhk. Osric Chau, Javicia Leslie, and Chyler Leigh are welcome presences as always. Like I mentioned, Katherine McNamara felt a little superfluous to the plot but she was fine as well. I will say that the SFX, while not high quality, were better than I have seen in recent years on the show. Also, some of the action scene, particularly the Flash vs Despero fight in the finale, were actually pretty good and they got Barry to use his powers in new and improved ways.
Overall, after a disappointing season 7, it was a pretty decent start to season 8. Hopefully it can keep up on that fun. I don't expect high art from The Flash but as long it delivers on the fun and action, its a fun popcorn ride. Next episode looks to be an Impulse and XS centered episode which should be good. I don't expect Barry or the main cast will play much of a central role in the episode.

Blues vs. Wild Game 3 (3-2)
This Season: 19-16-6 Against Wild: 2-1
Okay I didn't watch last night so hopefully me watching tonight won't jinx it.
Good job sticking with it tonight boys. good win. we really needed that one.
First Period
oh gosh not Colton (he got back on the ice a couple shifts later)
DP annoying someone in the corner as usual
I would like us to be moving our feet just a little more
we need to start taking advantage of some of these icing calls to get some extended zone time
I appreciate that when in doubt Ville just holds on to a puck rather than trying to hand it off
I see Sammy has taken over on the ill-advised drop passes in Robbys absence
okay we got some o zone time even if it didn't result in anything
Vince has the same look on his face every time he takes a penalty which is slightly offended and incredulous
Ville has the glove hand working tonight
i would like our clearing attempts to be a little cleaner
DP getting in there so fast to defend Sammy
Yes Panger! Call Hoffman out for his bad zone entries
Aww Colt fell down and he's gonna blame himself for that goal. it's okay bud
okay boys not a bad period just tighten a few things up
Second Period
I have really seen improvements in Rouzy's game this year. he is hunting pucks, winning battles, and just working hard
we have had so many risky drop passes this game and i hate it
okay nice shot from Hoffman on that powerplay goal
ugh DP get that shot on net bud
really good to see Colton open it up and skate hard which we haven't seen much since he got back
oh Vince is trying to fight. i appreciate the fire but now both of you are going to the box
I love how it takes two Wild players to take the puck away from O'Ry
oh it always makes me nervous when Vladi blocks shots
i would like our passes to be just a little cleaner
i just remembered that Marco spent a lot of his career with the Wild. not really relevant but it came to my mind
ugh late period goals against suck and we have done it twice tonight. we have been getting good looks though so we just gotta stick with it
Third Period
love to see that hard slapshot from Colton even if it doesn't connect it creates chaos
Vladi is really throwing his weight around tonight and it is doing good things
Vince has had a good defensive game but has had a few shots blocked by the first level of Wild defense so would like him to pick his shots a little better
the amount of shots from the point from our D that have gone totally wide of the net is a little frustrating
Walman is having a great game. i really like this kid
I like Rouzy's thought on that wrap around attempt but i would like him to control it just a little more to get the tuck in
ooo that was such a good chance for Zach
I love that they play "Shut up and Dance With Me" when guys almost fight
oh this pp is getting good chances but just can't connect
Jaden just had a shift where he was on an absolute mission and it was very sexy of him
okay we are running out of time here boys. we need to get some solid possession in the zone if we wanna pull Ville
okay pulling the goalie worked out this time. now let's keep pushing. i love the chaos Jaden created there
OT
Ryan O'reilly is really good at hockey

Tagged by @bumblebeer07 ^-^ Thank you <3 List 7 of your favourite comfort movies \o/ It was hard because I mostly watch Marvel movies, but I can’t just list them all up :’D So, here we go \o/ 1.) Spider-Man: Homecoming: Yeah... Starting off with this one, but I just really like it cuz I can see sweet Peter Parker being an awkward teenager, being a badass hero, a naughty child who never listens to (his) father, Tony, and he wasn’t yet traumatized here by this wonderful man’s death (like we all got in the cinemas)
2.) Frozen II: Yes, I love disney movies, I am a big soft baby in my heart, deal with it. I think it came out beautiful, and really love the whole thing, and Elsa’s transformation, and the song called “Show Yoursefl”? Don’t even get me started. Guess who was singing it for weeks \o/ (me, it was me)
3.) Due Date: Hello there Robert Downey Junior, also, this was one of the many movies that my brother showed me, and then we watched it together and had a good laugh. I miss those days, but hopefully, they will return.
4.) Deadpool: Yessss, I can’t leave this out of the list. I first saw DP in the video game version, that we played with my brother, and then saw the movie in a cinema for the first time with my friends back in high school. It was a wonderful day, and I think it was the day where I got seriously into these type of movies. I really love this chaotic dork, and Ryan Reynolds got a spot in my heart for a long time (besides many others, but my heart is very big).
5.) Suicide Squad: Also saw this one with my friends in the cinema. It was a bit of a roller-coaster for me, a bit long, but boy, I freakin’ love Harley Quinn, and how Margot Robbie played her, I can’t imagine anyone else in her place :D
6.) The Hangover: Another one that I saw with my brother, and really liked the whole piece ^-^ Chaotic boys are my fave :’D
7.) Fack ju, Göhte!: First time I saw it on TV, and was drooling all over Zeki’s (Elyas M’Barek) body, while having a good time with a bag of popcorn. (Later I watched part 2 and 3 and felt wonderful) I tag @silkystark and @plueschpop, you might not even know I exist but I stalk your blog daily, but too scared to start a real conversation. (Don’t hunt me down please) Only do if you want to, or if you were already tagged once, then I’m really sorry Bai~ o7
#I'm so bad at these#I just wanted to tag all 7 with marvel movies and the avengers series#but bish#don't do that XD#here I am

I’d never worked with Yorgos before, so I was really trying to get my head around it. I was more nervous at the end of that prep than I’ve been on any other film because I did not know how we were going to shoot it. Yorgos will answer your questions. You’ll get a sense of what he’s thinking. At the same time, you don’t quite know what’s going on in his head. Then what happened was, the first day of the shoot, he was there to take a still, he showed it to me, and says, “Do you want to shoot that shot?” I go, “Oh, God, this is going to be okay, because he takes pictures and that’s his viewfinder."
From there on, I got the rhythm and I got more comfortable with what was going on. Then it was like being in a situation where you go, “Should we do that?” And he goes, “No, don’t do that.” Yorgos is a very confident DP in his own right. Across the board, what you’re saying about feeling like you’re being dropped in… in his last film, certainly, you know you’re in good hands. You’re being told, on every level, something that he wants to tell, and I think you totally get that from that film. It’s all departments. His editing is fantastic as well. What was interesting about shooting the film was the use of jump cuts — time jumps — and that wasn’t scripted like that; they discovered stuff in the edit. There’s quite a lot of dissolving going on. None of that stuff was talked about, but you can see on the shoot that he got what he wanted, and now he’s playing with it.
Cinematographer Robbie Ryan on the hungry imagination of Yorgos Lanthimos, avoiding prep & post-production, and the perfect whip pan.

So i saw The Favourite, the new Lanthimos film and there is so much stuff i could say about it. First, he’s already one of my favorite contemporary directors as it is, second, the cast is top notch including Emma Stone (which wasn’t always the case for me) and truly astonishing cinematography by Robbie Ryan (i was expecting his regular DP Bakatakis, but Robbie is along with him probably top 5 in his field in the last decade or so anyway and this was some truly inventive and impressive camera work, not just the beauty of the setting. In a way it reminded me of Barry Lyndon/Dangerous Liaisons (the only two remote associations, cause its still quite different from both on many levels), only a darker, funnier and more sinister film. I didn’t know what Lanthimos would do with a period piece (they can be quite boring and a bit posh even in good hands to be honest) but boy did he make something extraordinary out of it. You can have a great cast, but in the end, the director’s vision, the script and how it is all delivered is the key to what makes a movie stand out. Plenty of good interesting movies, but certain directors bring up the level to a whole new dimension where it truly is magical. You simply enjoy the cinematic feast that is in front of you. I wouldn’t dare say its a feel good movie, but i haven’t been so happy after watching a film in quite some time (well once or twice a year something like this happens). Hats off to the ladies here, the trio of Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone were spectacular in their roles and the chemistry worked, which can be essential. Just a delight watching it from start to finish, warmly recommended even for those that might have found some previous too much for the stomach :)

Movietastic Summer Week 1
Husband and I are having a movietastic summer this summer. Here are the seven movies from week one.
#1 Citizen Kane (1941) dir. Orson Welles, screen play Orson Welles et al., cinematography Gregg Toland, feat. Orson Welles, Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay
Citizen Kane understands the medium of a black and white movie and exploits to its extremes to paint a portrait of a man whose life was always public. We learn more about Kane through Mr. Thompson, a reporter, who interviews and reads accounts about Mr. Kane. Visually excellent and the storytelling is marvelous. The twenty-something year old Orson Welles’ project is successful and it’s an apt precedent to movie making.
This easily digestible blog post goes over some of the most celebrated aspects of Citizen Kane. [link]
rating: would watch over-and-over again as a film student
#2 The Big Short (2015) dir. Adam McKay (Anchorman, Antman), screenplay Adam McKay, Charles Randolph, based on story by Michael Lewis, feat. Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Christian Bale, and Brad Pitt; and cameos (?) Margot Robbie taking a bath, Anthony Bourdain cooking, and Selena Gomez in Vegas. Academy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay
What’s so impressive is that EVERYONE brought their A-game to this rather pseudo-mockumentary (?). It’s based on a true tale (the 2008 crash) featuring depictions of real people, along with educational or narrative asides that ‘break the fourth wall.’ Adam McKay is a great director that understands and applies good composition. His cast become convincing portraits of these real people with their own motivations and fears. Despite telling the story of four main parties (and only two of them colliding) - the overarching narrative is very easy to follow.
rating: would recommend everyone to watch it
#3 Dune (1984) dir. David Lynch, based on story by Frank Herbert, feat. Young Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, and Lynch Fam: Jack Nance, Evertett McGill budget $45 mil, domestic box office $30 mil (RIP) Saturn Award for Best Costume Design
I still can’t really say what I watched. It’s very Lynchian in that everything - the plot, the themes, the symbols - just floats ambiguously into one big moving picture - but also the strangest Lynch product because it was... actually a linear story? It was an ambitious project. The set pieces and physical environment is quite stunning, but Lynch’s trademark CGI is honestly hilarious and detracts from the main course, if there is one. I’m glad to have watched it, but it does feel like a very, very loose adaptation of a Sci-fi epic. And Young Kyle MacLachlan is a treasure to this world.
A really disappointed critic’s review that lays out all of the characteristics of Dune [link]
rating: it was all a ruse for Blue Velvet
#4 Deadpool (2015) dir. Tim Miller, featuring the dreams of Ryan Reynolds budget: 58 mil -> box office 783 mil !!
We unintentionally watched the back-to-back double feature for Deadpool 2. This was my third time watching the movie and frankly it’s teethpulling. DP1 took risks in many different ways (i.e. making the movie) that it stuck to true-and-proven methods everywhere else (i.e. the entire movie without Deadpool as a character). The predictable 3-act structure coupled with “edgy” one liners gets old the third time. Regardless, I think this movie is extremely important to this nerd/Marvel era, and DP1′s incredible success is something to admire and celebrate.
rating: does not deserve a fourth rewatch
#5 Deadpool 2 (2018) dir. David Leitch (John Wick 1), screenplay: DP1 writers, RR himself, and Rob Liefield, feat. Deadpool, X-Force, and that guy that played the other big Marvel villain budget: 110 mil
Christopher Orr of The Atlantic said, “At least as funny as the original Deadpool, and better in virtually every other respect: better plot, better villains, a few unexpected narrative swerves.” [link] and that reflects my impression of the movie as well. It’s a great entertainment - it couples the low-budget novelty of the first movie with better production and a more extensive narrative. It’s visually entertaining, the jokes are fresh again, and it continues to play into itself - meta jokes about the success of Logan, DP’s current oneliners about the “dark” DC Universe, ... It’s similar to the first movie, but a lot more exciting and better executed. Regarding repeat watches -- we’ll have to see.
rating: go watch it!
p.s. The best part about the DP franchise is really the “fourth wall breaking” marketing aspect - an example: “Deadpool Answers Trending Questions” [link]
#6 Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) dir. Francis Ford Coppola, screenplay: James V. Hart (Hook, Muppet Treasure Island) feat. Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman as Johnny Depp, and Keanu Reeves as Keanu Reeves Academy Award for Best Costume Design
This 1992 Dracula is a wonderful period piece. It deserves the Best Costume Design - everyone wears not only ‘period’ costumes but they all serve as additional symbols of identity, of their role, to each character. The only shame is that I think the movie lasted one act(?) too long. The visual plays that made it so, VERY, interesting (like the scene pictured here) are diminished in favor of the underlying love story behind Dracula. Coppola does not shy away from what makes DRACULA so incredible. Curious lust of cardinal pleasures, of the fear of unknown, of forbidden desires - these explode onto the movie screen. The movie leaps between themes of romance, horror, mystery, and period piece fluidly.
The visual techniques actually reminded me a lot of manga - overlaying of different and related elements in one composition to set the pieces served really well to reflect the structure of the book (loose collections of clippings). There was a lot of visual storytelling, and again, I think that effort diminished towards the end.
rating: 3/4 of the movie is great to study, the last 1/4 is forgettable
#7 Blade (1998) dir. Stephen Norrington (who?), screenplay: David S. Goyer (later writes Nolan’s Batman trilogy and Snyder’s abominations), feat. WESLEY SNIPES budget: 45 mil -> box office 131 mil
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for big cheesy films so Blade currently rests on the throne of my list of awesome cheesy films. Blade precedes Matrix, does a couple of things before The Matrix was ever put on screen (not necessarily well, but it does do it first). The action scenes and choreography are well executed. Wesley Snipes’ every physical move - from standing to fist pumping (see above) are so tight and memorable. The movie may not be the greatest thing put on screen, but it is so lovable!
Curiously enough, my husband compared Blade to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (which we rank as the most tragic production of our time) saying that Blade anticipated all of the problems for BvS and did not make those mistakes... Turns out the movies share the same writer! Blade makes a better movie by not taking itself too seriously, and it’s all the more fun because of everyone having fun, committing to extremely over-the-top cheesy performances.
rating: well-executed cautionary tale of ice skating uphill
p.s. in the words of a friend, “I’m so happy that Deadpool paved the way for R-rated superhero films and Black Panther for black superheroes...”
This has been so fun so far! Stay tuned for next week’s movietastic summer extravaganza.

Olivia’s movie ‘The Favorite’ has made it onto The Playlist 100 most anticipated movies of 2018 at number 5:
5. “The Favorite” Director: Yorgos Lanthimos (“Dogtooth,” “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”) Cast: Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Olivia Colman Synopsis: Two noblewomen jockey for power and influence at the court of England’s Queen Anne in the early 18th century. What You Need To Know: I mean, wtf? Is Yorgos Lanthimos just punking us all? After freaking the freak out of the half-audiences who remained in their seats for all of his icily amazing “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” scarcely a year later, he’s going all corsets and court intrigue and for the very first time apparently a film of his can be described as “bawdy.” That said, we are super up for what will undoubtedly be the highest profile outing for the Greek director yet, with not just the cast (Olivia Colman as Queen Anne is a bit of a “yasss kweeen” moment) but also the crew stacked with A-list collaborators, from Robbie Ryan as DP, to Sandy Powell on costumes. Release Date: ‘The Lobster’ and ‘Sacred Deer’ both played Cannes, so it’s very possible he could return, unless the film’s “bawdiness” is judged not Cannes-y enough, in which case expect another major European festival to snap it up. (X)
