I've got a question about episode 60, though, what's the music that's mixed into the morse and static? It sounds like a very old recording, and I love that sort of thing. ahhhh this makes me so happy!! I LOVE that it's getting people into Morse Code, that thrills me.

(some spoilers below about episode 60 of @breakerwhiskey, including additional explanation from me that you may or may not want)

yes, the music mixed into episode 60 IS an old recording! it's a song played on a phonograph - I use a service called Splice to get a lot of the sounds I've put in a bunch of my shows, and there's a pack that's all sounds from vintage audio devices. there's a few of those sounds mixed into episode 60 - a phonograph song, the sounds of wax cylinders being played, and a recording of Thomas Edison explaining the phonograph - all of them distorted to be mostly unrecognizable.

the song file itself is just called 'phonograph song' - I think a bunch of audio engineers just recorded whatever they could off the vintage resources they had - but as far as I was able to glean from the lyrics (they're not that much clearer even undistorted) it's an 1860s confederate rallying song, which I thought would be just about the worst possible thing that you could hear played at random over a radio frequency. I wanted the sounds all together to be menacing, and Whiskey has talked a lot about the myth-making of America vs. the cruel reality, so it felt on theme.

that said, the phonograph sounds were chosen mainly for the literal quality of the sound - that tactile, fuzzy wax static - rather than any true story importance. there are story-relevant sounds mixed in there, but I'm not going to tell you what they are or what they mean!

#breaker whiskey #sorry that the song itself isn't something anyone would want to listen to!!!#but I did think it was interesting/would be absolutely bone chilling to hear in the middle of nowhere #not that whiskey necessarily was hearing the same transmission wE were all hearing #she was camping!#she may not have heard anything at all!!#I also think it's historically FASCINATING that #at the EARLIEST #that recording was made in the late 1870s/1880s #YEARS after the confederacy lost #and like........a bunch of guys got together and STILL decided to sing that song and record it #it really says a lot about a lot you know?#also that it was clearly preserved by SOMEONE #whereas of course a lot of wax cylinder recordings have been lost #though we do have quite a lot!!!#and more are being digitized all the time #but I try to avoid downloading sounds from - like - soundcloud and stuff #where I'm not sure what the licensing/source of it is #which is what's great about splice #I bought a bunch of credits for LWL music #and then had to use them up before 30 days were out #so I downloaded SO many random things #this was like....2 years ago now I guess #I have a bunch of random radio sounds #a lot of atmospheric music that I could use in future projects etc #ANYWAY #that's the story behind the song #lauren answers things

spotify wants me to use magic shuffle so bad

#the only music algorithm i can trust is soundcloud #ive disabled it mostly bc i just dont feel like it #but soundcloud is really good at randomly recommending songs with a VERY similar vibe/sound to the initial song you listened to #its crazy.#also people on soundcloud have more freedom when it comes to uploading #though songs get deleted probably due to copyright takedowns and whatever #i listen to most high quality uploads of region locked anison #on sc. and they get deleted NOT often but sometimes a bunch of them disappear #like. several HQ uploads im@s:cg songs got taken out #probably because most of them were made available on spotify #(though most of them. mostly the songs that did NOT appear in the anime. are only available in their #game versions. so not the full song which. sucks #though i've seen full versions of some im@s songs on spotify posted by overseas twitter users #i've seen most of the 765pro songs in full available so i'm not too bummed out #but also i like some of the im@s:cg songs #ALSO the dearly stars songs aren't available in the philippines #oh well)#anyways. download shit 👍

#idk I’m tired of saying to people that I use SoundCloud primarily and then have to suffer through “but spotify- but apple mu- but but but”#i. do. not. care.#i fucking hate Spotify bc unless you pay for it you can’t choose which song you’re actually gonna listen to first #and not only that but it fucking adds music to your playlists that you Don’t Choose Yourself. do not like that #and like I’d have used it anyways and paid for premium if I hadn’t used Apple Music first out of necessity #it was on the phone already. why should I have downloaded a separate app or so I thought #and when I got my first job I just paid for Apple Music subscription #and when I got too broke for that I used spotify for free but learned that I fucking hated it #so I went back to Apple Music for the longest time #till I started watching Corpse Husband streams and found out he made music too #and he mentioned in a stream that SoundCloud was better bc it doesn’t change the volume or smth #and I’m nothing if not influenced by parasocial relationships so I immediately sought him out on SoundCloud and realized he released more #on SoundCloud than anywhere else. so I started using it much more #and then I was too broke for Apple Music and just stopped using it at all in favor of SoundCloud #eventually got a SoundCloud subscription #and like even if I don’t have the money for it sometimes it’s still great?? bc not everything is behind the paywall and you can find new #artists really easily and it doesn’t add unnecessary shit to your playlists like SoundCloud #idk I just really like it more than anything else but I acknowledge the pros to the others #Spotify can do group playlists and does spotify wrapped and you can have friends on there #Apple Music is automatically on your iPhone or apple product and accessible (this is the only plus. the only thing I miss about it are the #playlists that I won’t get back)#okay the sentiment is getting away from me. basically I hate when people make me feel lesser for using SoundCloud.#a lot of people act like spotify is Number 1 followed by Apple Music and that everything else is absolute dogshit #like. can we all just fucking calm down #one thing I don’t like about SoundCloud: some artists don’t use it and their music is great and I wish they would post their shit on it too #a guy recommended me a good Japanese psych rock song from the 70s/80s but unfortunately the artist isn’t on SoundCloud and no user has #posted it themself.#people do that and then make sure the artist name is also in the title #i might just have to do it myself #i want it on my playlists
