#downgraded sea maiden realized i cant think of one nice thing to say about it

MV19 S4 binge watching finished.

I can't comment as someone who reviews children's media, because I don't and am not qualified. I can only say what my own feelings and impressions are. Simply put, I don't like this show as a whole. If i consider seasons 1 and 2 as one show, and seasons 3 and 4 as another, then at least I can like the first even if it feels unfinished.

As a whole it's a kid's show, it's fine. I assume there are many kids who like it. Inoffensive children's media that a toddler can watch and a parent can convince themselves is sufficient entertainment for their older child. Meanwhile the older child goes to a friend's house to watch R-rated films, because kids want be grown up and eschew anything deemed "for babies." There's not much TV that fills the gap between "toddler" and "teen" and what little there is tends to be extremely silly and not at all thoughtful. My hopes for this show was that it was one of the rare attempts to fill that gap, but that was a mistake. But I'm off on a tangent.

I think I saw season 4 advertised as "the best season ever" which is bonkers to me, because my impression is it was really low budget. Very little effort into changing scenery, certain episodes taking place almost entirely in the same spot, etc. And the "a scary monster turns out to be a new friend" trope was used in nearly every single episode. That's no longer a trope, that's just a cliche now.

I did hope the finale would leave me somewhat satisfied but that fell very short of anything I would have expected, let alone dared to hope for.

Literally the best thing I can say about this season is that, like previous seasons, the music is very good.

I'm sure I'll write up something obnoxiously long about this season (even longer than this post 0:) ) later. But since no one asked, here's my episode ranking on a scale from 1-5.

Ringmaster Brisk: 2.5

Moomins and the Railway: 1

Sniff's Cave: 4

Midsummer Meddling: 2.5

Moominmamma the Artist: 3

The Great Cold: 3.5

Moominpappa the Great Explorer: 3

Comet in Moominvalley: 3

so yeah not one 5! Very middle of the road across the board. There were some cute bits I did enjoy. And Sniff's Cave was a surprise stand out. I would like to rank The Great Cold higher, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I think it was going in a great direction, but the climax was as subpar as the rank 2 episodes.

Overall it's what I expected after season 3, which means it's a disappointment at least for me. I don't feel any wish to rewatch it, even though I still enjoy rewatching a number of episodes from the 90s series, which was arguably even more simplistic and cloyingly sweet... It had a charm factor that off-set its flaws.

Bit of a shame, I really hoped I'd miss this show when it was over.
