Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull demeure la plus amboyante incarnation du sacro-saint adage “sexe, drogues & rock’n’roll”. Rolling Stone l’a rencontrée à Paris à l’occasion de la sortie de son somptueux album de reprises, Easy Come Easy Go

Il est des êtres exceptionnels ayant survécu à toutes les tentations sans jamais tirer leur révérence. Pour Marianne Faithfull, tout a commencé en 1964, avec ce disque, As Tears Go By,une ballade nostalgique composée sur mesure par Mick Jagger, Keith Richards et leur manager Andrew « Loog » Oldham. Fille d’un major de l’armée britannique et d’une baronne autrichienne, arrière-petite nièce de Sacher-Masoch, Marianne ne ressemble en rien aux autres filles, mannequins pour la plupart, qui traînent dans un Swinging London où se croisent artistes, pop stars et jeunes héritiers issus de l’Establishment. En sortant à dix-sept ans du couvent où elle a suivi toute sa scolarité, elle a épousé le marchand d’art John Dunbar qui l’a introduite dans cette bulle dorée. Repérée par Oldham alors qu’elle commence à étudier le théâtre, Marianne succombe aux charmes de Mick Jagger et se retrouve embarquée dans le sillage sulfureux des Stones. Jusqu’à sa (énième) overdose en Australie, à la fin des Sixties, juste avant le début du tournage du film Ned Kelly, le Robin des Bois australien que Jagger doit incarner. Grand seigneur, le chanteur des Stones abandonne Marianne à l’hôpital pour assurer le tournage.

La p’tite frangine Morphine vient de franchir la ligne blanche fatidique. Il faudra attendre dix ans avant qu’elle ne renaisse de ses cendres poudreuses. Dix ans d’abîme et de désillusions. À l’époque, elle n’est même pas créditée pour avoir écrit le texte de la chanson « Sister Morphine » sur Sticky Fingers. Un scandale. Mais c’est sans compter sur sa pugnacité naturelle. Lorsqu’elle ressurgit, la voix grave et rauque, brisée par les cigarettes, les années d’excès, c’est avec le monumental Broken English (1979) et ses moments de grâce absolue, comme The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan, sa reprise du Working Class Hero de Lennon ou encore Why D’ya Do It, flèche « cupidonienne » vitriolée sonnant le glas d’un style de vie décadent, et contenant quelques anomalies barbares : « Je te tenais la bite quand tu te défonçais avec mon shit/Chaque fois que je vois ta queue, je vois sa connasse de chatte dans mon lit… » Toute ressemblance avec… « C’était surtout dédié à moi, jure-t-elle. Ce n’est qu’une super-chanson à propos de personne en particulier… Tu penses que je parle de Mick Jagger, lui aussi croit que cette chanson lui est dédiée… Alors, écris ce que tu veux : c’est peut-être pour Mick, mais au-delà, c’est peut-être aussi au sujet de n’importe qui. Why D’ya Do It est un chef-d’œuvre de jalousie sexuelle ! À quoi bon dire aux gens ce qu’ils doivent comprendre ? C’est à eux de se forger leurs propres idées et d’en déduire ce qu’ils ressentent. »

Depuis Broken English, madame Faithfull continue de promener sa voix fatiguée sur des albums précieux, non sans s’offrir quelques incursions remarquées au cinéma, comme dans le Marie-Antoinette de Sofia Coppola ou l’émouvant Irina Palm (2007). Ces jours-ci, elle publie Easy Come Easy Go, album de reprises réinventant magistralement un répertoire allant de Billie Holiday aux Decemberists, en passant par Merle Haggard, Bessie Smith, Dolly Parton, Randy Newman ou encore The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Le tout avec la complicité de quelques « amis » triés sur le volet, Sean Lennon, Chan Marshall de Cat Power, Keith Richards, Jarvis Cocker ou Nick Cave. « Ce projet s’est vraiment bien goupillé. Au-delà de mes espérances, explique-t-elle. C’est une véritable expression artistique. Du choix des chansons aux arrangements, l’ensemble fonctionne à merveille, mais j’en ignore la raison et l’alchimie. D’un seul coup, tout s’est harmonisé. Easy Come Easy Go est un album de reprises, mais je n’aime pas ce terme. Il s’agit d’avantage d’un recueil d’interprétations et d’adaptations. Ce disque sort également en double album 33-tours car j’ai toujours préféré le son analogique et la gravure du vinyle au son numérique du CD. »

Le regard pétillant d’une éternelle adolescente, le sourire généreux et l’âme à nue, Faithfull évoque le choix de ses reprises surprises : « Ce sont mes racines musicales. Elles sont très éclectiques. Avant d’enregistrer à Paris, j’avais déjà mis en boîte Down From Dover, Solitude, Easy Come Easy Go, Ooh Ooh Baby, Sing Me Back Home, Black Coffee, Somewhere (A Place For Us). » Et cette perle immaculée, Sing Me Back Home en duo avec Keith Richards, lequel en a enregistré une version pirate au siècle précédent, seul au piano, et continue de jouer au Rolling Clown à travers les stades du monde entier: « Je me souviens surtout de Keith Richards et Gram Parsons (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, ndlr) la chantant à tue-tête dans les années soixante. Ce n’est qu’ensuite que j’ai entendu la version pirate de Keith au piano. J’ai lon- guement hésité entre les deux versions et j’ai choisi d’interpréter celle de Keith et Gram. J’adore Keith! Ce fut une partie de plaisir sur fond de flashback vers le futur. Il a toujours fait partie de ma vie. Je l’ai rencontré à dix-huit ans. Depuis nous sommes toujours restés amis. C’est la même chose avec Mick. Je suis toujours très, très proche de Charlie (Watts, ndlr), ainsi que de Ronnie (Wood, ndlr). Nous formons un clan. Une grande famille. J’ai encore parlé avec Anita Pallenberg hier (ex-égérie stonienne, elle aussi, qui vécut avec Brian Jones et Keith Richards, ndlr). En fait, je fais toujours partie des Rolling Stones ! » (Rires.)

Autre membre de l’aristocratie rock présent sur le disque, Sean, le second fils de John Lennon, qu’elle côtoya comme les autres Beatles dans les Sixties, y compris sur le tournage du fameux Rock’n’Roll Circus. « Une expérience unique et merveilleuse, difficile à réaliser dans la mesure où nous étions tous complètement défoncés », reconnaît-elle. Quant à Sean, elle assure qu’il est un ami : « J’ai toujours entretenu des liens très forts avec Yoko Ono que j’adore, tout comme j’ai toujours adoré John Lennon. C’est une forme de perfection, d’autant plus que Sean est un musicien accompli. Nous l’avons demandé, nous l’avons payé et il s’est éclaté. » Idem pour Nick Cave : « C’est un ami qui m’est cher. Quelqu’un de très sauvage. Je viens de lire son livre. Il a tellement de talent ! Quand je me plantais, il me faisait refaire la prise et j’obtempérais… »

Evidemment, la voix de Faithfull n’est jamais aussi bouleversante que sur les ballades d’une tristesse absolue, comme ce Solitude jazzy, composé par Ellington & Co et chanté par cette autre icône abîmée que fut Billie Holiday : « Le désespoir, c’est mon domaine de prédilection. J’y excelle. Ce qui ne veut pas dire, bien au contraire, que je sois une personne triste. C’est d’ailleurs la raison pour laquelle j’aime tellement les chansons tristes : elles me permettent d’exprimer des sentiments que je n’éprouve pas dans la vie courante. Quant à Solitude, je considère cette chanson comme une tuerie: je la chante et je la laisse partir. » Easy Come, Easy Go ? « Je me sens plus confiante aujourd’hui. Plus relaxe. J’ai accompli beaucoup de choses qui me tenaient à cœur, j’ai découvert plein d’endroits et j’ai eu la chance de jouer avec des musiciens que je respecte énormément et réciproquement. Je suis devenue une légende ! » (Rires.)

Légende, vous avez dit légende ? On songe à cette version approximative mais géniale du « I Got You Babe » de Sonny & Cher revue et corrigée par Faithfull et Bowie, le temps d’un duo sur canapé, au milieu des Seventies : « Quel souvenir! (Rires.) En fait nous travaillons actuellement sur l’élaboration d’un coffret et ce duo en fait partie. Ce qui est difficile à réaliser, c’est que l’ensemble de ma carrière musicale soit explosé dans tous les sens. Tout rassembler n’est pas une mince affaire. »

L’équation s’impose d’emblée : comment Faithfull juge-t-elle ses Swinging Sixties, avec le recul ? « J’ai eu le privilège de me trouver au cœur d’une époque merveilleuse ! J’ai eu la chance de rencontrer des gens qui sont devenus des amis intimes. J’ai vécu l’aspect magique des Sixties. Ce que je regrette, c’est de les avoir traversées complètement défoncée. Je pense que j’aurais vécu encore plus intensément les années soixante si je n’avais pas été à fond dans la dope. Ce fut une perte de temps personnelle. » Et, sur ce sujet ô combien sensible, de parler à nouveau de son vieux complice Keith Richards : « Keith a toujours été comme ça! Nous l’étions tous les deux durant les Sixties. Je pensais comme lui que les drogues symbolisaient le Saint Graal. Simplement, moi, j’ai arrêté. Je ne sais pas si c’est de la sagesse, mais c’est la façon dont je ressens les choses. J’ai toujours été consciente quand je prenais de la dope que ce n’est pas ce qu’il fallait que je fasse. Quelque part, j’avais peur et ça me mettait mal à l’aise. Après l’euphorie des Sixties, les Seventies furent une longue descente en enfer. »

Pour conclure cet entretien, on choisit d’évoquer sa rencontre – immortalisée par des photos mythiques – avec le démiurge de la décadence made in France, Serge Gainsbourg, Tarzan dans la jungle des arts mineurs, sautant de liane en liane pour mieux séduire sa Jane : « Jane Birkin est une super copine. Mais j’ai rencontré Serge en 1964-1965. Si je me souviens bien, c’était par le truchement du magazine Salut les copains! Il traînait dans le coin avec Jean-Marie Perrier quand je faisais des séances d’enregistrement. Serge se tenait dangereusement en retrait. C’était un réel poète. Et un grand chanteur, mais à l’époque, je le fréquentais à peine. On se connaissait de vue, bien que j’aie enregistré certaines de ses chansons, comme Hier ou demain pour la comédie musicale Anna. Quant au clip de Running For Our Lives (sur Child’s Adventure, en 1983, ndlr), réalisé par Serge sur le toit d’une voiture, je dois dire que nous étions complètement décalqués à la vodka… À ce moment précis, le seul moyen de communiquer avec Gainsbourg était de boire avec lui. Mais c’était attendrissant. J’ai eu la chance de passer des moments merveilleux avec lui. Sur scène, je reprends Lola Rastaquouère, cette chanson fait partie de mon répertoire et Serge Gainsbourg demeure mon artiste français préféré. » Frédéric Lecomte

Grace Slick

Bien sûr, il y eut l’été de l’Amour, les concerts gratuits et les chansons qui emmenaient haut, très haut. Mais la chanteuse de l’Airplane n’était pas juste une hippie. Avec sa voix unique et sa personnalité explosive, Grace Slick dépassait de loin le folklore Flower Power. Sixties idole

Même si l’insurrection annoncée par les textes du groupe n’a jamais vraiment eu lieu, le Jefferson Airplane aura quand même été à l’épicentre d’une révolution bien réelle. Car souvenons-nous, avant que le Flower Power ne redonne un peu de couleurs à une Amérike endeuillée par la guerre du Viêtnam, les femmes n’avaient guère leur place dans les groupes de rock. Elles étaient pour la plupart cantonnées aux rôles de poupées de son, chantant en solo ou au sein de girl’s groups, mais toujours coachées par quelque producteur (mâle) tout-puissant. Ce fut l’un des grands bouleversements du San Francisco Sound que de mêler voix d’hommes et de femmes dans ce grand tourbillon folk-rock qui, peu à peu, décolla vers le psychédélisme. La Baie était ainsi remplie de combos bariolés qui prêchaient l’égalité des sexes et le gobage de LSD: The Ace of Cups, The Great Society, It’s a Beautiful Day, Big Brother & The Holding Company et, bien sûr, le Jefferson Airplane. L’Airplane, l’ex-mannequin Grace Slick, l’avait rejoint en octobre 1966, amenant avec elle deux chansons de son ancien groupe, The Great Society, « Somebody To Love » et « White Rabbit ». Ces hymnes à la liberté et aux champignons hallucinogènes se retrouvèrent sur Surrealistic Pillow (février 1967), la pierre angulaire du rock psyché, le disque sur lequel Jerry Garcia, du Grateful Dead, était crédité comme « Musical et Spiritual Adviser ». Le succès de Surrealistic aidant, Grace Slick devint l’une des icônes du Summer of Love. On aimait à la fois ses vocaux (croisés avec ceux de Marty Balin et de Paul Kantner) et son tempérament de meneuse qui tranchait avec la coolitude apathique des enfants fleurs. Les albums suivants, After Bathing At Baxter’s et Crown Of Creation, qu’elle entraîna vers les sommets grâce à des titres comme « Lather », allaient confirmer que Grace était bien l’une des plus grandes chanteuses de l’histoire du rock, toutes époques confondues. Avec Volunteers, en 1969, l’album le plus « militant » de l’Airplane, elle perdra un peu en nuance pour gagner en force, appelant sincèrement à une révolution qui paraîtra un peu pâlichonne à côté de celle hurlée à Detroit par le MC5. Séparé en 1972, l’Airplane finira son vol avec des disques de moins en moins excitants. Grace Slick trouvant dans le Jefferson Starship – au moins au début – un autre véhicule pour des chansons désormais orientées science-fiction.

Tina Turner

Paradoxe cruel : pour Tina Turner, les années d’enfer qu’elle vécut avec l’implacable Ike furent aussi celles où nulle autre chanteuse ne pouvait rivaliser avec elle en termes de feeling, de répertoire et… de sex-appeal. Une légende

Une seule image : Tina caressant son micro de façon suggestive sur « I’ve Been Loving You Too Long », comme en 69 à Altamont, en première partie des Stones. Bien sûr, qu’IL l’obligeait à faire ça. Tout comme à danser de façon si… suggestive. À cause d’Ike, le mac à dames des trottoirs de Harlem qui inventa quasiment le rock’n’roll au piano avec Rocket 88, Annie Mae Bullock a toujours traîné cette image de bombe sexuelle, insatiable et lascive. Entouré des Ikettes, le couple immortalise dans les Sixties la décadence de la soul music afro-américaine. En 66, c’est la rencontre au sommet avec Phil Spector, qui évince Ike des séances du monumental River Deep Mountain High. Le Pop Genius ne se remettra jamais du flop de son chef-d’œuvre. Après avoir subi les derniers outrages et revisité un répertoire rock allant de « Come Together » à « Honky Tonk Women » via Proud Mary, Tina se clashe avec ce mari psychopathe qui la cogne et l’humilie méchamment depuis des années pour entamer une carrière solo en 1974. Elle est l’Acid Queen de l’opéra rock Tommy dans le film totalement barré de Ken Russell. Avant d’entamer une longue traversée du désert. Au début des Eigthies, la lionne sexy est remise en selle par Mark Knopfler de Dire Straits, avec Private Dancer. Commence alors une seconde carrière, plus F.M. (« We Don’t Need Another Hero ») qui n’entame en rien son aura de grande lady du rhythm’n’blues. Encore capable, après plusieurs années d’absence, de venir en découdre sur scène avec une Beyoncé bluffée, comme elle le fit récemment. Avant de repartir pour une (ultime ?) tournée mondiale qui passera par la France en mars 2009.

Suzi Quatro

Au royaume de l’instant hit, difficile de rivaliser avec l’affriolante Suzi Quatro, égérie rock et glam qui enflamma le début des Seventies.

T-rex, Slade, Gary Glitter… et Suzi Q? Pour ceux qui auraient manqué le début, comme on disait alors, Susan Kay Quatro accompagne son père aux bongos dès l’âge de huit ans au sein du Quatro Jazz Band. Puis, avec ses trois sœurs, Suzi Soul fonde les Pleasure Seekers. Son premier 45-tours, Rolling Stone (en 1972), ne remporte aucun succès. Tout va changer lorsqu’elle rencontre le producteur Micky Most qui a œuvré pour The Animals, Jeff Beck, ou encore Donovan. Il emmène la petite Suzi Q à Londres et lui fait confectionner un répertoire sur mesure par le tandem Nick Chinn-Mike Chapman. Résultat, une impressionnante série de hits en pleine ère glam : « Can The Can », « 48 Crash », « The Wild One », « Daytona Demon », « Devil Gate Drive », etc. Barbare bardée de cuir noir ou en combinaison de satin lamé, Suzi Quatro va peaufiner une image de sauvageonne dominatrice (fouets, chaînes, etc.) et traverser les Seventies basse Fender Precision en bandoulière, accompagnée d’un band redoutable. Explorant une formule musicale imparable basée sur un retour aux sources et à la quintessence d’un rock’n’roll joué à fond la caisse, propulsé par les hurlements éraillés d’une bombe anatomique et sonique, le Quatro quatuor influencera énormément de groupes de filles, des Runaways aux Go-Go’s en passant par Girlschool ou Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (qui lui ont un peu tout pompé).

Nico

Égérie du Velvet, icône warholienne, mannequin, actrice et junkie de luxe, la trajectoire de Nico se confond avec le grand rêve — poudré — des Sixties.

Nico, Anita Pallenberg, Amanda Lear : les mannequins de l’agence de Catherine Harlé, celles des Play-Boys de Dutronc. Avec Patti Harrison, Marianne Faithfull, Zouzou et quelques autres, ces filles belles et sexy furent les héroïnes des électriques années soixante. Nico, elle, avait quelque chose en plus. À commencer par ce (sur)nom, anagramme prédestinée d’icon – comme dans Nico Icon, l’émouvant documentaire de Susanne Ofteringer, avec les témoignages de Lou Reed, de Philippe Garrel, de Jackson Browne. Une beauté froide à couper le souffle, une voix grave, sépulcrale, une vie comme un tourbillon, la dope, encore et toujours. Factory Idol, Christia Paffgen. Toujours là où ça se passe. À l’instant X. Dans La Dolce Vita de Fellini (59), à Paris chez Castel ou au cœur du London qui swingue en compagnie de Brian Jones. Elle fait même un bout d’essai avec Gainsbourg pour Strip-Tease et grave un 45-tours avec Jones et Jimmy Page (The Last Miles), avant de filer à New York. Idylle avec Dylan, quoi de plus normal, il lui offre le troublant « I’ll Keep It With Mine ». Et puis Warhol. Plongée dans l’univers opiacé et argenté de l’Usine à rêves. Chelsea Girl et le Velvet. Combo chaotique, guitares minimalistes. Promue (?) chanteuse, la beauté blonde hante les plages soniques du mythique The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), « Femme Fatale », « I’ll Be Your Mirror », « All Tomorrow’s Parties », psyché à mort. Andy a la banane. Et Ari, l’enfant qu’elle a eu avec Delon, qui déambule au milieu de cette endless party… quoique. Virée du Velvet par Lou Reed, repêchée par John Cale et Tom Wilson, elle grave le sublime Chelsea Girl, cultissime galette vénéneuse qui met à nue une âme maladive et maléfique sublimant une poignée de perles rares composées par Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, John Cale, Tim Hardin ou Dylan. Junkie notoire, bohémienne à la dérive courant après sa dose d’héro, Nico traversera les trois décennies suivantes en envoyant épisodiquement des cartes musicales d’un front gothique avant l’heure (son obsessionnel harmonium) au fil d’albums hautement recommandables : The Marble Index (1968), Desert Shore (1970), The End (1974) voire Drama Of Exile en 1981. L’exil et le drame, oui. À Ibiza. Où elle s’était retirée et où elle devait mourir, d’un stupide accident de bicyclette, le 18 juillet 1988.

Debbie Harry

« Denis, Denis, je suis si folle de toi (youpidoo). » Chez Deborah Harry que peut-on préférer : la serveuse du Max’s Kansas City, la Bunny Playboy, l’actrice ou la chanteuse de Blondie ? À vrai dire, à la foire aux souvenirs, avec elle, on a le choix

Véritable bombe sexuée du rock new-yorkais seventies, Deborah Harry s’est vue affublée de ce pseudo le jour où son boyfriend Chris Stein en eut assez d’entendre les automobilistes siffler sur le passage de sa petite amie. Il venait du même coup de trouver le nom du groupe qu’il montait avec son frère Harry et sa copine… Jouant alors du cliché, ce n’est pas tant la chouette voix de mezzo-soprano de Debbie qui devait faire le succès du groupe, mais bien le marketing malin de son image, l’affairisme et la production calibrée des chansons de Blondie. Avant la carrière solo. « Je me suis réveillée un matin et j’en ai eu marre d’être Blondie, j’ai alors décidé d’être Dirty Harry, et c’est ce que je suis aujourd’hui. » La petite fille adoptée à trois ans par des commerçants de Floride avait déjà fait partie des Stilettos, un groupe pré-punk new-yorkais. Un temps serveuse dans un club Playboy, Debbie était une sacrée fêtarde, d’où la réputation pas vraiment usurpée de blonde facile, genre Marilyn décalcomaniaque, à fréquenter Warhol et le Studio 54. L’icône devait aussi beaucoup à la BD, à l’outrance et au fantasme adolescent de la girl next door, avec ce côté « qui vient de la rue » et, de l’autre, la distance qui permet d’en rêver. Soit les déclinaisons offertes par « Heart Of Glass », « Hanging On The Telephone », « Island Of Lost Souls », etc. C’est Iggy Pop qui un jour a raconté qu’après un concert en commun, il l’avait approchée, histoire de voir… Debbie lui aurait répondu que, si l’envie était partagée, elle n’était pas tout à fait sûre que cela plaise à son mec. Autre facteur de succès, la présence dans la première heure de la première journée de diffusion de MTV du clip de « Rapture », filmé par Warhol. Alors, Debbie Harry, bisexuelle affirmée, ne se pose ni du côté glacé de la Poly Styrene de X-Ray Spex de I’m A Cliche, ni encore moins dans la forêt poilue de la Palmolive des Slits de Typical Girls. Toujours en activité (on la croise sur le dernier Fall Out Boy), elle aura habilement navigué entre les images, passant du rock à la pop, d’une carrière solo au Jazz Passengers, du cinéma underground de Downtown 81 au Videodrome de Cronenberg. Mais le Polaroid qu’on gardera d’elle est bien celui de la copine amoureuse, pendue au téléphone. Sans qu’on ne sache plus très bien si elle attend un appel de Denis ou de Denise.

Patti Smith

« Jésus est mort pour les péchés de quelqu’un, mais pas les miens. » Dès l’intro de « Gloria », la chanson qui ouvre Horses, on savait à quoi s’en tenir. Reprendre les choses, côté chamanique, là où Jim Morrison les avait laissées. Premier tour de force et naissance d’une icône réconciliant Keith Richards et Rimbaud

D’abord la pochette. La photo en noir et blanc, signée Mapplethorpe. Égérie androgyne. L’élégance, aux antipodes des poupées rock de l’époque. La reprise incantatoire du Gloria des Them aux avant-postes. Cette année-là, 75, tout le monde a pris le premier album de Patti Smith en pleine tronche. Même ceux qui n’étaient pas branchés sur une nouvelle scène new-yorkaise en pleine ébullition. Trente-trois ans plus tard, tout ça semble définitivement… bizarre. Le rock, devenu mode de vie, de survie et d’envie. L’expo à la Fondation Cartier, tout le tralala. Dagsboro approves preliminary proposal for new Royal Farms

The Dagsboro Town Council during their monthly meeting on Monday, July 16, heard a preliminary proposal for a new Royal Farms location from Jonathan N.H. Street of architecture engineering firm Becker Morgan Group.

The new store is proposed to be built at the northwest corner of the intersection of Route 113 and Clayton Street (Route 26/Nine Foot Road) in Dagsboro, diagonally across the intersection from the existing Royal Farms, which it will replace. After the nearly 20-minute presentation, the council voted unanimously to approve the preliminary plans for Royal Farms to proceed.

The council members had questions about the entrances from Clayton Street, as well as concerns over crosswalks that are currently at the intersection. Councilman William Chandler expressed concerns about the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike, and also about the proposed turning lanes for the location.

Police Chief Floyd J. Toomey was able to ease some of those concerns, having reviewed the revisions of plans previously submitted to the Town’s Planning Commission.

“My biggest concern, if you recall, was with that congested area, was the crosswalk being there — but we moved that,” Toomey said. “We talked about it, we discussed it, and you’ve moved that. It used to go right across those three lanes that you’re talking about. So you would have not only the traffic, but you would have pedestrian traffic as well.

“And that’s been moved, and moved substantially. It was right across that. So that was my biggest, or what brought all that to fruition with my thought process. But that’s been moved and changed — and in my opinion, it’s a lot safer now by moving that pedestrian crosswalk out of the way.”

Royal Farms is a privately owned chain of convenience stores headquartered in Baltimore, Md. As of March 2015, the company operated 178 stores throughout Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia.

The new Royal Farms location is proposed to have seven double-sided fueling stations allowing for up to 14 vehicles to fuel up at one time. Farther west on the site are proposed diesel stations. The proposal also calls for a vacuum and air station. Currently, there are no plans to have a car wash on the premises.

The rear property line has a proposal for a 6-foot high white vinyl fence, as well as landscape buffering, while the front and sides of the property will have a 10-foot wide “shared use path.”

Also at the July 16 meeting, the council unanimously approved the hiring of Gregory Morris of Liguori & Morris of Dover as Dagsboro’s town solicitor.

This 1969 AMC Hurst Rambler SC/Rambler Terrorized Northeast Dragstrips in the 1970s

Leave it to the maniacal minds at Kenosha’s American Motors Corporation to take a frumpy Rambler family sedan and turn it into a lean, mean, street-fightin’ machine: the AMC Hurst SC/Rambler. AMC’s bid to play with the Big Three in 1969 was arguably the gutsiest move of the muscle car era, and the boys in Kenosha did it by simply following the basic muscle car formula that had been forged years earlier by its competitors in the Motor City.

By taking the lightweight, base-model Rambler, infusing it with its biggest and hottest motor to date, and throwing in a four-speed rowed with a T-handle Hurst shifter for good measure, AMC created a car sporting one hell of a punch where it counts. Throw in some wild paint schemes and a price well below the cost of the other bargain-basement brawlers, and you had a recipe for success, or at least a shot at some pretty low e.t.’s!

Pushing out 1 hp for every 10.19 pounds of car, the AMC Hurst SC/Rambler had one of the highest horsepower-to-weight ratios of its era. This would help propel the radically handsome little box through the traps at times usually only obtained by big-block muscle monsters built by the Big Three.

Chuck’s Luck

If you are a loyal MCR reader, Chuck Fisher’s name will probably sound familiar. He’s a dyed-in-the-wool muscle car fanatic whose cars have been featured in several of our issues. Though he has a sizeable hoard of original cars, by no means is he a hoarder. His cars are not put up and pampered; he drives them often and enjoys them for what they were built for: running them out on the streets hard and leaving a black-streaked calling card on a regular basis.

Like all Chuck’s cars, this one has a tale to tell. The story starts in 1969, when Steven Posick (Sam to his friends) and his buddy Frank Lucuk walked into Stahls’ AMC dealership in Derby, Connecticut. They both planned to buy a hot new AMC offering that day and were ready to lay down some cash.

They spotted a pair of beauties sitting side by side: a Big Bad Green 390 Javelin and a SC/Rambler. Frank stepped up first and took the Javelin, which left the boxy little SC/Rambler for Sam. Sam brought it to his repair shop, Steven Posick Motor Sales, to prep it for quarter-mile duty. He had already campaigned pretty much everything Detroit had offered up to this time, and had recently run a 390 Javelin from Stahls’ on local tracks like Dover (Connecticut) Dragway and New York National Speedway.

The first thing Sam did was remove the motor and send it to S&K Speed in Long Island, New York, to get a dose of power. In the meantime, the already race-proven, S&K-built 390 out of Sam’s Javelin was installed in the SC/Rambler. A set of 4.11 gears went out back, along with a set of slicks mounted on Cragar rims. The final touch was adding the lettering on the side, which featured Stahls’ AMC as its main sponsor.

Within weeks the car was pulling off consistent 12-second quarters. The turnover was so fast that even the original dealer sales invoice was still attached in the window. A short time later the SC/Rambler’s original engine came back from S&K and was put into Sam’s Javelin. Soon they were both back hitting the track hard, and under Sam’s care they both did pretty well.

The owner/driver was known locally as a wild man, both on and off the track, and it was not uncommon to see either car street racing. He certainly wasn’t shy about getting into it at high speeds on the local roads. He became a sort of local celebrity in his brash AMCs.

Sam had other drivers in his circle of friends, so on weekends the two Stahls’ cars would hit different tracks in the area. His pair of AMC aces was always fast and competitive, and always seemed to place well. However, by 1972 he was growing tired of the runaround. He decided to respray both cars back to their original paint schemes and sold them through his body shop, the SC/Rambler let go with its built-up race engine and running gear still intact.

The Javelin disappeared, never to surface again. But the SC/Rambler stayed in the Connecticut area and close to Chuck Fisher’s home. It was sold to a local fellow who used it as transportation for years, driving it daily and parking it outside in the inhospitable New England winters. It was practically a landmark in the area, as the owner parked the brightly painted sedan where it was visible for all to see.

The weather and constant driving in the salty winter months took a toll on the car. However, in 1990 the car’s fortunes improved. Chuck’s good friend Jim Wisneski spied an advertisement for a 1969 Rambler SC in the local want ads for $1,500. He knew the history of the SC/Rambler and wanted to save it, so he grabbed a fistful of Benjamins and headed over with his tow truck.

Jim soon was learning the ways of a true hot rod junky. Interestingly enough, he was employed by Sam himself as a muscle car mechanic, so he knew the history of this wild ride firsthand. Another interesting twist to the story was that the last owner of the SC/Rambler had stored the car in the lot adjacent to Stahls’ new dealership location in town.

After getting the car for just $900, Jim tore into a rotisserie restoration, taking the car down to the core. He soon found out that even after all these years and miles, the engine was still as S&K built it. It needed just a freshening with new rings, bearings, and a valve job to get it up to snuff. They kept the enormous solid-lifter cam in place, as it brought an evil, lopey grunt to this particular 390. Since there were no AMC reproduction parts at the time, Jim bought a six-cylinder Rambler parts car and used its near-mint black vinyl interior to replace the ravaged original charcoal gray interior in the SC/Rambler, though the SC/Rambler’s distinctive red, white, and blue headrests stayed in the car. Now the AMC was a stunner. Though it was not a 100-point restoration, it made the car once again complete and ready to show and go.

Ramblin’ Man

After two decades of Jim’s ownership, Chuck took the SC/Rambler off of his good buddy’s hands. The 20-year-old restoration was showing its age, so Chuck cleaned up some of the car’s issues. He decided to keep the black interior because it was part of this particular AMC’s backstory and Chuck likes to keep modifications intact on his street and race cars. To bring it back to day-two status, he decided not only to install a set of Cragars like it had back in the day but also to letter the car to look like it did when it ran on the Northeast’s raceways. Good friend Scott Bowden grabbed his brushes along with a few vintage pics of the car and worked his magic, repeating history once again.

Now a local legend is reborn and back in full race regalia. Knowing Chuck, this car will not sit idle. He is putting it through the paces and keeping it up to spec; that hopped-up 390 is ready to perform when the urge hits him. Thanks to him, another classic muscle car is being saved for future generations to ogle over and drive.

There were 1,512 SC/Ramblers built in two different paint schemes. The more prominent A scheme (shown here) featured red on the flanks over the white base, while the B scheme was more sedate: just red and blue rocker stripes on the white base car. They both featured the wild “induction” graphics on the hood.

The SC/Rambler’s 390 was rebuilt by S&K Speed in Long Island, New York, back in 1969. No one knows for sure if this is the car’s original engine or the one taken from owner Steven Posick’s 1968 Javelin. The lack of VIN stampings on AMC’s blocks makes it difficult to identify original powerplants. Nevertheless, this is a real-deal 390 built with the quarter-mile in mind. The paint in the engine bay is original.

When the car was stripped down for a restoration in 1990, the original charcoal vinyl interior was in poor shape. Then-owner Jim Wisneski replaced the seats and door panels with pieces salvaged from a mint condition Rambler he bought for parts. Fortunately he was smart enough to reuse the SC/Rambler-only headrests.

Wisneski didn’t like the throw of the original Hurst T-handle shifter, so he bought an aftermarket one and installed it in the car. He did try to bend the Hurst more to his liking, putting a torch to the lower end of the shaft. It didn’t work, but the OE piece is still with the car.

Once new owner Chuck Fisher got his hands on the SC/Rambler, he knew this ride would get a set of original Cragar SS wheels just like it ran back in its days as a racer. These tires have been with the car for the last 20-plus years. The front skinnies are Shell tires; yes, Shell sold tires back in the day!

Racing Days

Steven “Sam” Posick, the original owner of Chuck Fisher’s SC/Rambler, bought the car new from Stahls’ AMC in Connecticut. It, as well as his earlier race car, a 1968 Javelin, were sponsored by the dealership while they terrorized the Northeast’s dragstrips through the early 1970s.

1969 Chevelle build ideas

Ive just recently bought an original 69' Chevelle 396. The entire car is going to have to be rebuilt, so I thought i would share my ideas for the build and ask for some feedback, other ideas, and help on where to find parts. The car needs all four quarter panels, roof and vinyl top, trunk lid, trunk pan, and interior. Im going to have the interior redone professionally due to my lack of knowledge about it, but everything else will be done by myself. As far as the build goes, im going to try and give the car as much flare as possible while also keeping the resale value high and the car as close to numbers matching as possible. The car was originally Dover White so im contemplating painting the car its original color and then getting a custom wrap of matte black with a rose vine design. Also thinking about lowering suspension and putting chrome cragar rims on. Feedback and ideas welcome.

Song and Dream Apartment Listing In Addition to A Book Listing of Books That Went to Bookholders in College Park, Maryland on Saturday April 1, 2017 but I intend to keep as reference to be able to eventually repurchase, when the time is right, in Amazon kindlebook andor Amazon Audible form. Fortunately, I am blessed to have enough in my life with a sweet and handsome husband. However, it was actually a tricky decision for me to let go of the books listed, especially when it came to authors andor subjects of the book who I admire. Yet, I understand that I must do it for practical reasons as well as intuitively guided reasons that I prefer to avoid going into right now. However, one happy reason that I enjoy sharing is to facilitate my husband and I having to travel lighter when it comes to moving into our dream apartment in College Park Maryland andor Greenbelt Maryland (our ideal choice is College Park, Maryland due to the close proximity to our jobs/employment at the University of Maryland College Park). The listing of books that I put a 30 by are especially some of the books that are challenging for me to completely let go but I understand that I can instantly give to Bookholders for potential resale value. Additionally, they are some of the books that I definitely intend to eventually repurchase in Amazon kindle andor Amazon Audible form once I have a secret amount of money saved andor my husband and I are eventually settled into our own home (my husband had an uplifting dream less than 24 hours ago that pertained to he and I living in and having our own home and my supportive mother in law/his mom was coming by to visit to show her encouragement). I also choose to go ahead and list what dates some of the books were purchased on Amazon as a way to help me understand/analyze my thought processes and what was going on in my life at that time (and how this might have indirectly affected my purchasing decisions). I truly believe that keeping track of the dates that I purchased the books is going to help me understand various things within 4-5 years from now or less. Additionally, I actually started this list Saturday April 1, 2017 with the fact that the listed books did go to Bookholders. However, it is today Monday April 3, 2017 where I finally had the chance to post the book listing. Additionally, I had to finish completing the book listing as I left off on The Secret of the Highly Creative Thinker today and resumed typing/documenting the book list with the Astral Codex book. I am definitely not doing this book listing to show off and I’m well aware of some of the public judgment I may attract for doing so. However, I have faith and truly believe that I am going to be glad that I made this book list in the future, additionally what I am doing now in documenting and publicly releasing this book list online (on my googleplus, tumblr, and wordpress blogs)is going to more intuitively and logically make sense to me within 4-5 years or less from now.
