CHICAGO—The longtime leader of the Anti-Defamation League, who now serves as director emeritus, expressed concern about Jews being forced to meet in "secret locations" at the Democratic National Convention due to security threats and anti-Semitism.
"I know in my heart that in the future, it will be better, for Jews in America, then [sic] it is today. But I fear it will never be the same," said Abraham Foxman in a Twitter post on Wednesday.
"After 50 years fighting anti-Semitism in America, I could not have imagined a time Jews would have to meet in secret locations in Chicago at DNC."
Foxman, a Holocaust survivor, served as director of the Jewish civil rights organization from 1987 to 2015. The ADL is now run by Jonathan Greenblatt, a former Obama aide, who has steered it in a much more partisan direction.
Foxman’s comments come as Jewish groups holding events on the sidelines of the convention have kept their meeting locations a closely guarded secret.
The Jewish Democratic Council of America held panel discussions with former U.S. ambassador to Spain Alan Solomont and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), but attendees were required to register before receiving the location. Private security and metal detectors were present at both events.
The Israeli-American Council only disclosed the location for its "Hostage Square" discussion to attendees a few hours before it started, the Times of Israel reported on Wednesday.
The security concerns appeared justified. On Tuesday, pro-Hamas agitators disrupted a DNC event with hostage families hosted by Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox Jewish group. The protesters shouted, "Zionism has got to fall" and "Shame on you" at attendees. Dozens of anti-Israel protesters were also arrested after clashing with police near the convention Tuesday night.
Jewish Democratic leaders acknowledged the concerns about anti-Semitism at the DNC but also downplayed the divisions within their party.
Wasserman Schultz, speaking at a JDCA event on Thursday, said she had "angst for over a week over what the reaction would be" when the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the eight Americans being held captive by Hamas, spoke at the DNC on Wednesday.
Wasserman Schultz said there was a lot of "hype about how many protesters there were going to be," and she felt relieved when there were no disruptions from the audience.
But Democratic politicians have also seemed reluctant to mention Israel’s war with Hamas and the Oct. 7 attacks on the convention stage. None of the prominent Jewish Democratic speakers—including second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro—mentioned Israel or the hostage crisis in their remarks.
The only speakers to broach the subject were Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Minnesota attorney general Keith Ellison, who are aligned with the left-leaning anti-Israel movement. Both politicians called for an Israeli ceasefire.
President Joe Biden briefly acknowledged the anti-Israel protests in his speech on Monday, saying the activists "have a point."

What's your favorite cookie?
One time I was in Spain with my family and I was so bored after several hours of my pale ass just sitting in the shade so I decided to take a walk and get some snacks. I originally wanted ice cream from a shop I’d visited before that had really fun flavours but I kept walking and saw a foodcart I hadn’t seen before.
Me and my fam usually went to the same place each summer the last 5 years so there were rarely anything new to see, but when the sign said something about cookies I had to try it. The lady who owned the cart didn’t speak english very well so I just pointed to one of the cookies that looked best and paid her. When I tell you this is the best thing I have ever eaten I’m not kidding. It was a chocolate blueberry cookie, very thick almost like it also had pieces of cookie doug in it after being baked. It was big, soft, warm, the perfect cookie. I got two more and some for my family and I kept buying them every day until I went home at the end of summer. But I haven’t seen the cookie cart since. No clue where she went and don’t remember what her name was so I’ll never get to eat her cookies again
Long story short: chocolate chip cookies are pretty dope.

History Tour - Cadiz, Spain
Tumblr media
We spent today exploring the history of Cadiz. We started our day with a visit to the beautiful Monumento a la Constitucion de 1812 (pictured above).
Tumblr media
The contrasting dark grey stone on the monument was stunning.
Tumblr media
The House of the 5 Towers (Casa de las 5 Torres) - the city of Cadiz once had 160 of these mirador towers. They were built to allow merchants to watch over maritime traffic, they were enclosed to protect the owners from inclement weather and to allow them to be less noticed while they were using their spyglasses.
Tumblr media
Hotel Casa de las Cuatro Torres, another example of the mirador towers of Cadiz.
Tumblr media
Next stop, Museo de Cadiz. It cost 1.50 euros each for us to go in - it is free for EU citizens and residents. It was a lovely museum and a great chance to learn the history of Cadiz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The city of Cadiz dates back to 1100 B.C. - it was a Phoenician trading center. The exhibits in the museum are amazing, well worth the visit. Above are a few of my favorites, the mosaic tile work was fantastic. The detailed work on the jewelry and pottery always impresses me. Lovely way to spend a morning and gain a little knowledge about Cadiz.
Tumblr media
After the museum, we were hungry and decided to eat at Mina Plaza and Mina Five. We had a wonderful meal under the shade of one of the giant ficus trees on the plaza - I had paella and Doug had a pasta dish, both were delicious.
After lunch we wandered the streets of Cadiz - checking out the architecture and enjoying the wonderful temperatures:

Torre Tavira.
Tumblr media
Cool adornment on a building.
Tumblr media
Parish of St. Anthony of Padua.
Tumblr media
Cadiz Cathedral.
Tumblr media
Our walk back along the ocean front was spectacular!
Tumblr media
The streets were nearly empty on our way back to the Airbnb, it was siesta time in Cadiz!

few months ago mccall posted something on his story about how he was in some hotel and the hotel staff told him the piano there was the oldest one in all of england and i was like (classically trained musician) could this be true? maybe. do i believe it when ross mccall tells me bc some hotel staff told him? please bffr. also i would love to know how shit went down when you told him all of this to his face please inquiring minds need the tea
I think there should be a global scheme that everywhere ross goes the staff has to convince him that the hotel has an ancient mystery to solve, bc i Guarantee he would InstaLive himself going into catacombs to like retrieve a cursed candelabra that would free all the spirits trapped in the hotel. He's just a hero like that yk such an Artist, such a Thinker.
and what went down was that i was a Real Sucker and stood in the Idiot line at the Band of Brothers Symposium (read: the meet and greet line) and had them all sign my shit (and tried to indicate my shared homosexuality to doug spain by greeting him with "hey girl"). And when i got to ross i was a little Out of Sorts and told him he should do more comedies bc That's what he's actually good at and that his best performance was in a movie called 7 Days to Vegas and to say he was Nonplussed that Anybody had seen that movie would be an understatement.
Needless to say, it was a successful interaction. And michael cudlitz told me he liked my Butter tattoo, so I walked away satisfied and stress smoked three cigarettes outside my hotel.
But then rick gomez stole my id at the airport at 5a.m. and it caused me a lot of stress. I still had fun though!

International Man: Recently, Biden approved Ukraine’s use of American long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russia—something Vladimir Putin has explicitly warned is a red line.
What are your thoughts on the implications of this decision?
Doug Casey: The Bidenistas are extremely dangerous fools. They’re taking one more step on the escalation ladder toward World War III.
I’ve watched governments scale the ladder since the 1950s when schoolchildren drilled to “duck and cover”—get under their desks when the air raid sirens went off. And I well remember the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when we came within a hair’s breadth of nuclear war.
In the mid-1980s, the Soviets could sense that their empire was collapsing—the world was again on the edge of nuclear war—it was a “now or never” thing for them. Fortunately, it was a “not now.” However, what’s happening now may be the most serious crisis of all. Nuclear war is being considered as a realistic option.
Herman Kahn, the author of On Thermonuclear War and Thinking the Unthinkable, became a friend when I lived in Washington, DC. (See Crisis Investing for the 90s for how and why). His rational contemplation of how a nuclear war might start and how it would end was considered outrageous. But now it’s something that’s discussed in the popular media; people have come to accept the near inevitability of it.
The world is ramping up towards World War III. The atmosphere is like that of the late 30s when the civil war in Spain and the Japanese invasion of China were overtures to World War II.
People don’t seem as scared of the prospect as they were in past crises. But they should be more scared now than ever before. At least in some ways.
I say that because, in the past, ICBMs couldn’t be targeted with great precision. To make up for that, their payloads had to be gigantic to get the job done. We’re talking megaton-size city busters; the Soviets tested their 50-megaton Tsar Bomb in 1961 for a reason. But precision delivery systems have obviated the need for giant bombs. And it’s become obvious that there’s no need to destroy an entire city when you can neatly target military or intelligence installations, which are the real dangers.

27 November 1942
Pz. IV (L/43) Ausf.G Nº812 of Panzer-Regiment 25/7.Panzer-Division at the harbour of Toulon in France, during 'Operation Lila'.
(In the background is the French Dunkerque-class battleship 'Strasbourg')
On November 27, the Germans commenced "Unternehmen Lila" with the goal of occupying Toulon and seizing the French fleet. Comprising of elements from the 7. Panzer-Division and SS-Panzergrenadier-Division "Das Reich", four combat teams entered the city around 04:30. Fort Lamalgue, along with Admiral André Marquis, was captured swiftly.
The attack came as a complete surprise to the Vichy officers, but Contre-Admiral Dornon transmitted the order to scuttle the fleet to Admiral de Laborde aboard the flagship 'Strasbourg'. Laborde was taken aback by the German operation, but repeated orders to prepare for scuttling, and to fire on any unauthorised personnel approaching the ships.
Advancing through Toulon, the Germans occupied heights overlooking the harbour and air-dropped mines to prevent a French escape. Reaching the gates of the naval base, the Germans were delayed by the sentries who demanded paperwork allowing admission. By 05:25, German tanks entered the base and de Laborde issued the scuttle order from his flagship 'Strasbourg'. Fighting soon broke out along the waterfront, with the Germans coming under fire from the ships. Out-gunned, the Germans attempted to negotiate, but were unable to board most vessels in time to prevent their sinking. German troops were successful in boarding the cruiser 'Dupleix' and closed its sea valves, but were driven off by explosions and fires breaking out in it's turrets. Soon the Germans were surrounded by sinking and burning ships.
By the end of the day, they had only succeeded in taking three disarmed destroyers, four damaged submarines, and three civilian vessels. In the fighting of November 27th, the French lost 12 killed and 26 wounded, while the Germans suffered one wounded.
In scuttling the fleet, the French destroyed 77 vessels, including 3 battleships, 7 cruisers, 15 destroyers, and 13 torpedo boats. Five submarines managed to get underway, with three reaching North Africa, one in Spain, and the last was forced to scuttle at the mouth of the harbour. The surface ship 'Leonor Fresnel' also escaped. While Charles de Gaulle and the Free French severely criticised the action, stating that the fleet should have tried to escape, the scuttling prevented the ships from falling into Axis hands. Salvage efforts begun but none of the larger ships saw service again during the war.
After the liberation of France, de Laborde was tried and convicted of treason for not trying to save the
fleet. Found guilty, he was sentenced to death. This was soon commuted to life imprisonment before he was granted clemency in 1947.

New York Knicks Acquire Willy Hernangómez from Philadelphia 76ers
Tumblr media
On June 25th, 2015, the Philadelphia 76ers traded the draft rights of Willy Hernangómez to the New York Knicks for a 2020 second round draft pick (Tyler Bey), a 2021 second round draft pick (Filip Petrušev) and cash considerations.
Killing two birds with one stone is a phrase that rarely means anything in the NBA but in the case of Willy Hernangómez, it fits. The New York Knicks became fans of Hernangómez while scouting his teammate and friend Kristaps Porzingis at Sevilla of Liga ACB in Spain.
Porzingis was a surefire lottery pick in the 2015 draft, but the Knicks additionally saw something in "Billy" Hernangómez. After taking Porzingis fourth in the 2015 draft, the Knicks pounced on the chance to take Hernangómez. They dealt two of their own second round picks in 2020 and 2021 to the Philadelphia 76ers for the 35th pick which was used on Hernangómez.
A skilled big man, Hernangómez finished well around the paint, had good footwork and could punish teams on the offensive glass. He was limited in lateral quickness on defense and in perimeter shooting.
After the draft, Hernangómez stayed overseas and averaged 5.7 PPG and 3.3 RPG in 34 games with Real Madrid during the 2015-16 season. In the 2016 offseason, Hernangómez signed a four-year contract with the Knicks worth $5.9 million.
Hernangómez was reunited with teammate Porzingis who had a quality rookie year with the Knicks and was a starter. For the 2016-17 season, the Knicks traded for guard Derrick Rose and signed free agents Joakim Noah and Courtney Lee.
The Knicks had a new coach as well in Jeff Hornacek. The new look team began the year a respectable 14-10 in its first 24 games. After 29 games, the team was 16-13 and tied for fourth in the East. The Knicks fell apart soon after, dropping 11 of their next 13 games. The season would come off the rails as New York went just 15-38 over the final 53 games to finish the year with a 31-51 record.
Hernangómez was a bright spot. The big man quickly established a bench role and appeared in 72 games with the Knicks, amassing 8.2 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.6 SPG and 0.5 BPG in 18.4 MPG. He made the NBA All-Star Weekend Rising Stars Challenge with Porzingis. Hernangómez also made the NBA's All-Rookie first team and earned fifth-place in voting (eight) for NBA Rookie of the Year.
Offensive rebounds became Hernangómez' calling card. Among players that played at least 50 games, Hernangómez was seventh in the NBA in offensive rebound rate (12.3%) per NBA Stats.
The 2017 offseason would see even more change for the Knicks. First, the team added French guard Frank Ntilikina with the eighth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Soon after, team president Phil Jackson and the team mutually agreed to part ways. General manager Steve Mills became lead decision maker when he was promoted to Jackson's role while the Knicks hired Scott Perry as general manager.
The team signed guard Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency. Finally, the team moved unhappy star Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a second round pick.
The Knicks were younger and it was clear a rebuild would center around Porzingis. Hernangómez seemed like a nice complementary piece, but by his second year, he had fallen out of the rotation. The arrival of Kanter and increased minutes for backup Kyle O'Quinn contributed to the decreased role.
By the middle of the year, Hernangómez had wanted a trade and a chance to play. The Knicks soon obliged. He played in 26 games, putting up 4.3 PPG, 2.6 RPG and 0.8 APG in 9.0 MPG. The team was 23-32 when it made the trade.
He was eventually traded to the Charlotte Hornets for two second round picks and forward Johnny Bryant. He ended his tenure in New York with averages of 7.1 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.2 APG and 0.5 SPG in 98 games. In that time, Hernangómez shot 54% from the field and 63% from the charity stripe in that time.
Tumblr media
Five years after the 2015 draft, the 2020 second rounder Philadelphia acquired was traded with guard Josh Richardson to the Dallas Mavericks for guard Seth Curry. The Sixers selected forward Tyler Bey from Colorado 36th in the 2020 draft and moved him to the Mavericks.
The 2021 second rounder ended up 50th in the 2021 draft and the 76ers selected Gonzaga center Filip Petrušev with the pick. The 76ers stashed Petrušev, and he played in the EuroLeague with Turkey's Anadolu Efes for the 2021-22 season and Serbia's KK Crvena zvezda.
Petrušev wanted to play in the NBA and showed his commitment, playing for Philadelphia's Summer League teams in both 2021 and 2022. After two years of waiting, his dream finally happened. Petrušev signed a contract in the 2023 offseason with the 76ers. The deal was a two-year contract which was 50% guaranteed the first year and not guaranteed the second year.
Petrušev averaged 10.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 1.4 BPG in five Summer League appearances with the Sixers in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Coming into his rookie NBA season, Petrušev joined a Sixers team in turmoil. Guard James Harden demanded a trade and did not join the team on the floor for the start of the season.
Eventually, the 76ers acquiesced to the star's demand, but Petrušev was a casualty of the situation. He played just one game (0 points, 1 rebound) with the 76ers before he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in late October. The trade was a three-team deal that saw the 76ers send James Harden to the Clippers, the Clippers sent two first round picks to the 76ers and a first round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Plaza Espana, Tapas, & Finding the Crowds - Madrid, Spain
Tumblr media
Our plan for today: a little stroll up to Plaza Espana and to a couple of other sights, then lunch somewhere, before heading back to our place for a siesta. Then we were going to the Palace, since entry is FREE from 5 to 7 p.m. - it was a solid plan.
We walked up to the Plaza Espana (pictured above). Lovely plaza, there was even an outdoor cinema on the plaza. There is a rooftop view from the RIU hotel (in the background), which costs a pretty penny to go up to, there is also a glass walkway that you can experience. We decided to pass on that and continued our walk around the area. We walked back toward the Palace and visited the gardens:
Tumblr media
Hedge-lined walkways, large water features, and pine trees filled the garden area. The back of the Palacio Real de Madrid dominates the garden.
Tumblr media
Casa Gallardo - one of the few modernista buildings in Madrid - quite opulent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruins from the San Gil Barracks - they are the remains of a convent, which became a military barrack, before being demolished. Remnants were discovered during construction on Plaza Espana (which is nearby) in 2020 and moved to this area shortly afterwards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next stop: The Temple of Debod. This is an ancient Egyptian temple that was relocated to Madrid as part of the International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia. Originally, it was constructed in 200 BC - it was moved to this site in 1970.
Tumblr media
From the temple, we descended to the lovely walkway along the Manzanares River - it was nice to find a little shade on our walk back toward our Airbnb. Next stop - lunch and a cold drink!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We found a perfect little sidewalk cafe - shade and a breeze! Taberna 4 Tapas - the staff was friendly, the portions were generous, the prices were reasonable, and the food was delicious. We had roasted chilis, potata bravas, and chicken (for Doug). Perfect!
Tumblr media
Viaducto de Segovia - this impressive bridge is just up the hill from our place. It is massive!
After our siesta, we headed up to the Royal Palace around 5:00 for our free entry. We found out, upon our arrival at the entrance, that we were not the only people looking to save a little money! The line to get in stretched around the building and down the street - well over 200 people were waiting to get in. We decided that we would rather pay the entrance fee tomorrow, rather than stand in line in the heat today. We wandered back toward the Catedral de Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena, which is right next door, and free. Unfortunately, there was a service going on, but they did let us wander around the perimeter of the interior of the cathedral (if we were quiet).
Tumblr media
The cathedral is massive and perched upon a hill - it, along with the palace, is visible from most of the city of Madrid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interior is not as elaborate as some of the cathedrals we have visited, but the stained-glass windows were beautiful and the memorials on the floors caught our attention.
We were disappointed that we weren't able to do the palace, but we will add it to our agenda for tomorrow. We had a lovely day of walking up and down the hills of Madrid and getting familiar with the lay of the land. Looking forward to tomorrow.....
