⋆˖⁺‧₊☆ say my name. // Autumn Drop Day 2 ☆₊‧⁺˖⋆
⋆ TF-EF, necklace, binned as accessory (layerable) or BV jewelry
⋆ 512x256 textures on a 158 poly mesh
⋆ 26 simlish letters in two color options
⋆ compressed, tooltipped, come with thumbnails
Link, swatch, detailed credits and more info under the cut ♡
Hi all! Here comes my second creation this month. I love scrolling through older MTS downloads because it's full of absolute gems, and one day I stumbled upon these super cute necklaces from 2006 made by crosieramanda. I knew I needed to have them, but I also love using as much Simlish instead of English as possible in my game, so then I decided I might as well just use these as my base and go for it!
While the original necklaces have bold letters that make a statement, I felt like choosing something that would be a little more on the elegant side. I ended up using all the 26 English-to-Simlish capital letters of a font called Petal to the Metal by Franzilla. I don't know if I will ever understand which letters came from which Sims game but I'm just gonna assume these ones are something that makes sense in the TS2 universe because the first time I thought to question it was after I was halfway done with the textures. There was no going back at that point. They are labeled so you can check the tooltips in-game if you're not sure which letter is in front of you, and be careful because like a third of them just look like the letter F.
The necklaces use the well-known and well-loved mesh by Dr Pixel. Because of that, these are only available for TF to EF for now. Most of the stuff was just copied from the original files, so these pendants shine under lights just like the original ones. From the technical side of things, the files look neat but there's a couple of seemingly unused resources left in there that I first tried deleting to my best ability, which led to the necklaces not showing up in my game at all. I decided to leave those be because they are literally just a bunch of TXMT strings that barely affect the file size anyway.
Known issues: during one of my play tests I would get white seams showing up at the bottom of the mesh when zooming out. I could barely replicate that to double check so I still have no idea if it's a mesh issue or something with my recolors, and I don't really know how to fix it either, so let's hope it won't appear too much for anyone else :] Aside from that, I really should play test more because I noticed too late that on the silver necklaces, the chain and the pendants are slightly different shades. I think it happens irl too so I'm telling myself it's fine because modifying 52 files again would probably make me cry.
Credits: crosieramanda at MTS for the original English initial necklaces (check them out, they're great), Dr Pixel for the mesh, Franzilla for the Petal to the Metal font, and this source for the graphics in the post
♡ Download ♡
Mesh by Dr Pixel (MESH_DPXLalphaEaringsNecklace080405) is included. Please check if you have it in your game already before installing it.

👀 are you interested in fire emblem and would you tell us your opinions of the franchise, I’d be very interested
I do like Fire Emblem! I have played FE6-8, smatterings of 9-10 (never owned them, played with friends), and all the games past Awakening/13. I did also play a bit of FE1, no shade on the limitations of the time of course but it sucks, not worth playing. So I am not a grand FE master but I have a lot of exposure to it.
I admire Fire Emblem for its simplicity of design & stakes - the combat system is "hit enemy, deal damage based on attack power - defense" kind of stuff, how everything works is super clear. All the complexity emerges on top of that. Your army is all individual people, permadeath means you need to pursue strategies with a lot of care such that difficulty doesn't get trivialized even if it is still easy (there is a big gap between "my odds of losing are 5% - exciting, I'm doing well!" and "my odds of losing are 0% - boring, why can't I skip this"). When it is doing its best you have a squad of guys with clear stakes and challenges that are overcome via smart kiting and tanking, it is rarely "did you equip the White Hooded Cat Ears to a unit with the Lapis Pendant to double proc a high initiative archer with Glacial Rain for opening gambit AOE freeze spam to prevent Featherknight Magic Guard from activating?" Which to be clear can also be a ton of fun, each game should just be its own thing - FE is just often best-in-class at its niche.
Fire Emblem also has great aesthetics, it aims for that "classy" style of fantasy typically and everyone authentically buys into all that nobility medieval stuff, which for a video game story can be fun vibes. I love their character designs, normally it is a game series with the right level of fanservice (Camilia -_-), and as someone who enjoys romance sideplots in video games FE typically gives you fun sidequests along those lines that sometimes has gameplay implications to boot - I loved the "eugenics simulator" of FE Awakening, as the fans affectionately called its system of child units inheriting traits from parent units. Tharja you are gonna torture Gaius for eternity via marriage because your faildaughter Noire needs Galeforce, I don't wanna hear any god damn objections okay?
As a series it is far from perfect, as anything running this long must be. The plots are normally "meh", in particular the series just doesn't care about logic that much? People do dumb shit alllll the time; FE7's plot is an absolute mess, Three House's story is hung together by macguffins and asspulls, and so on. It is better when it is simpler - in FE6, our boy Roy has gotta beat a bad guy, he conquering the world with dragons, oh no - great, no notes. More modern games need more involved plots due to market demand, but FE has not yet mastered it imo.
More modern games have also stacked complexity on the combat system - skills that proc, squads that attach to units, most recently "Engage rings" that buff and give spells. These can be good! The thing is the simplicity of say FE6 gets boring over so many hours, what works for a 10 hour game gets stale over 40, you need to grow. Sometimes they do that well - I thought Three Houses generally was smart on this front, the skills are more passive, the squads and gambits were (generally, they fucked up on movement buffs) flexible and didn't break things while giving you toys to play with. But Engage, while a good game, did get too complicated by half with many of its systems, and Awakening literally broke itself with pair-up & stacked skill procs, you can easily trivialize the whole game. And meanwhile to spike difficulty they would give every random enemy fighter different lethal skill procs that you would have to triple check every turn, a problems-beget-problems moment. But! I like that they are experimenting. Would have been real easy to capitalize on the success of Three Houses and just repeat it with Engage, but they didn't.
Also while permadeath is conceptually good, restarting a whole map because of a cheese crit is fucking awful, and I am glad modern games have time reset systems to obviate that. I do not play the older games without an emulator that can save state.
Tier listing the games I have played, lets see:
S Tier: Sacred Stones, Shadows of Valentia
A Tier: Three Houses, Blazing Sword
B Tier: Awakening, Engage, Binding Blade
C Tier: Fates
Edelgard best girl, and I think that covers it!

I’m curious what the others finfolk forms look like, what kinda tails and colors do they have, markers, etc. I’m so excited for the au!
I am not feeling well enough to really draw so I will just give descriptions instead! I'll be sure to draw everyone at some point though, but if you want me to ping (or just message) you or anyone else just private message me or let me know in replies.
__________________________________________________________
For all neighbors minus Home:
Each and every neighbor will grow claws, teeth, increased height, increased strength, and webbed hands when fully transformed. As for clothes, they're designed to change with their form.
Wally Darling
Wally may still be the shortest of the neighbors, but he's still quite tall when compared to normal puppets (most finmen are huge regardless). When he comes off as a normal-looking puppet, he wears a blue glass colored (blue glass is a color, it is my favorite color-) clothing, or sometimes loose-fitting beach clothes if he feels like relaxing. He often keeps a red shell pendant around his neck area and a black single earring on his right ear.
When Wally is a finman however, his yellow felt turns to scales that range from yellows, purples, teals, and different shades of blue. His ears become thick and finned, each end going up into a small S-shaped curl. Underneath the clothing, his body is covered in soft red swirling and spiraling markings, something you can he on his cheeks. Unlike the finwomen, finmen don't turn into mermaids/mermen, so he does not have a tail at all and he instead grows various fins on his body, all very colorful. Oh, and don't forget the fangs and claws...those are pretty sharp.
Barnaby
Barnaby is one of the taller finmen, but not the tallest. You can usually find him wearing shorts, sandals, shell necklaces, and a sunhat. It's just so darn hot sometimes so don't expect to see him in a shirt really. If anything he'll probably be under a shady area or relaxing in some cool water.
While he does already have teeth and claws, they are pretty dull until he transforms, having his teeth become more shark-like and claws much sharper than anyone else's. However, Barnaby is the only one here who does not grow scales at all. Instead that blue felt skin will turn into something far more smoother and paler in color almost becoming grey but not quite grey. The spots all over his body stay of course, but they become darker and more larger, creating marbled patterns. Not only is Barnaby the only one without scales, but he is the only one to grow a tail and keep his legs. The once small fluffy tail turns into a strong shark-like one, being capable of causing someone a concussion or head trauma if he really swung hard enough with it.
Sometimes everyone suspects he isn't a finman, but even if Barnaby wasn't, everyone would still love the big guy.
Howdy
Being a fisherman has its perks. One being that it tends to be a good workout, another being that you can get all kinds of stuff from the ocean. That being said, Howdy is a giant when compared to the others. In his normal form, the fisherman has medium long blue hair that's often slicked back or just braided all under his hat. You'd think that running a shop and being a fisherman would leave little time for this man to tidy up his clothes but you'd be wrong. Everything remains completely clean no matter the weather, it's almost scary. Even the shell pendant he wears on his apron is constantly shining.
Obviously having double the legs and arms leaves him with double the amount of claws to tear someone up with. As a finman, Howdy's height becomes outright terrifying to anyone he meets. Forget the scary claws and fangs, his height alone is enough to scare the fear of God into anyone.
The colors of Howdy's scales match himself much like it does with Wally and the others. Green scales fade from blues to teals and tiger-like stripes decorate his body, leaving oval spirals on his cheeks.
Eddie
Probably the friendliest captain out there with the coat to match! Often times Eddie will be wearing his white captain's coat and hat, having a shell pendant pinned to the black suit he wears under. He always stays tidy, keeping his red hair slicked back under his hat.
As a finman, Eddie will also grow in size. This is when his usual friendly appearance turns more scary to some. Being large and having a giant captain's coat squaring your shoulders can look intimidating. Along that, Eddie's hair tends to get more rougher and slightly wavy, so he lets it down every once in a while.
Frank
Frank is the only one that wasn't a finman before moving in on the island, having been a normal puppet before. He still prefers to remain as his normal puppet self on most days unless it's rainy or stormy. Usually he is wearing vests, casual clothes, and colors that are muted in color, preferring to keep the shell pendant he has on a butterfly bow, keeping the bow as a reminder of his old life.
In the rare times that he decides to be more fin-like, the only things about Frank that change is that he grows teal, purple, and grey scales, square-ish finned ears, squared swirls, and fangs.
Julie
Being a finwoman (or mermaid) has it's perks.
Julie will on most days wear light colored fluffy dresses with thick high sandals, a large sunhat, and a shell necklace to match. If not a dress, then she'd be happy to wear anything good for the beach so she can go ahead and jump in the water at any time.
As a mermaid, Julie transforms her legs into a long and strong tail, being just as strong as finmen (no really, you do NOT want to get hit with her tail). Her scales often reflect the dresses she usually wears, which are deep shades of coral reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows. The fins at the end of her tail are wide and flowing, sometimes she'll even wrap herself up in them for fun.
The ears differ slightly from the others as they appear more softer and fluffy with light pink swirls and sparkles dusting her face.
Sally
Sally is sometimes nicknamed Sally Scarlet for several reasons. One reason being the clothing she wears. Everything is always extravagant or just screams passion, having everything in shades of red and black.
Sally is the only one who is almost always in her mermaid form. No really, she even has a part of her house with an indoor pool that leads to the ocean because she just doesn't feel like getting out of the water yet. Her tail is much longer than Julie's but more slim and much sharper, some scales being so sharp they can be flung or used as throwing knives. The weapon tail is made up of blood red scales with speckled black and gold scales scattered on her body.
She often wears a golden crown around her already existing crown (she's a star so duh) and dark makeup to compliment her scales. Of course, she painted her claws black to match. Dramatic...
Poppy
Poppy is probably the most colorful out of the neighbors, having literally every color in the rainbow on her. You can usually find her outside gardening with Julie, wearing nothing (because she has feathers) or just wearing a light colored shawl with a matching sunhat. She often carries her shell or clips it to a shawl.
However, Poppy is a little bit different like Barnaby when it comes to her original form, but no one questions it really. Like the other mermaids, Poppy will form a tail consisting of the rainbow, but the rest of her body becomes much larger and longer, resembling something closer to a serpent. The feathers soon turn into long spikes and sharp scales that could easily cut through steel. Her wings become giant fins and her beak grows a sharp curved end. She doesn't transform ever much like Frank due to her scaring herself and others sometimes.
Home
It is known that Home has a physical body, but no one other than Wally has talked to him. The only time anyone ever gets a glimpse of Home is when a shell is being given to a neighbor. Large clawed and black scaly hands reach out from the dark whirlpool to take the shell and imbued his magic into it before it's given back.
Sorry for any spelling errors, I'm a bit tired right now.

Piercings and Tattoos Refs: Omaira Arusha, Esmeralda Garcia, and Prachal Pavone
I originally just wanted to focus on Prachal for this since introducing him, but thought I should throw in @puffy-princess-art's Omaira and @littlechaoticwitch's Esmeralda too, since I haven't included them in one of these posts before! The latter two mainly being my headcanons for them, but also taking a lot of inspiration from their respective creator's physical descriptions and facts for them. I hope you enjoy!
((Prachal is the only one with a visual since I haven't gotten around to drawing him yet))
================================================
- Omaira
. No piercings and no tattoos
. Almost was going to get her ears pierced, inspired by the beautiful pairs of earrings her mother always wore, but didn't follow through with it after losing her mother
. She still kept that memory of her mother close though, as she turned her one remaining earring into a pendant she always wears
- Esme
. Has no tattoos, but does have some ear piercings
. She has double lobes and a single set of helix/cartilage
. Had her ears first pierced when she was a child, but did not get her second set of lobe piercings done till she moved to the city as a teenager, and didn't get her helix/cartilage done till she was in her early-twenties
. Originally was only going to have her single set of lobes, but got her other piercings done as she finally had a chance to explore more of her personal style and freedom as she got older
. Doesn't have any tattoos, but would most likely get fine-line/dainty floral ones if she were to get any
- Prachal
. He has several piercings and one tattoo
. His piercings include a right nose ring, double lobes, a tragus for both ears, a right mid-helix and right industrial, and left triple helix
. As for his tattoo, it is a giant/full coverage, colorful back piece of a peacock
. Had some of his piercings as a teenager(mainly his lobes and helix ones), but got the rest done after becoming an adult and moving to Chromia
. He always thought they were pretty cool, and once he finally had a chance to explore his own style and getting the classic "big city makeover", he found new ones that greatly interested him and made him feel confident about his looks and himself
. For his tattoo, he also got it done a couple of years into living in Chromia, as he also liked them but didn't know for a while of what he wanted to get
. Chose the peacock as a callback to him being a peafowl-harpy, and the specific colors as he always wanted to be that colorful, since he always got bullied and picked on for his natural colors being shades of brown
. Has thought about getting more tattoos, but doesn't know exactly what he would want

Prompt #23: Last Waltz
Characters: Seiro Malkavi, Emet Selch, mentions of Shiramune, Haurchefant and Zenos.
Synopsis: If only for a moment, Seiro relinquishes his duty to create one last memory.
Setting: The Tempest, Amaurot.
Warning - none
-----------------------
‘Quick and painless. A clean strike through the heart to end his pain.’
Such was the chant of words that had drifted repeatedly through Seiro’s mind this past hour like a desperate prayer. But did he seek to end Emet Selch’s pain or his own? The thought of his loss burned with white hot agony deep in his chest, more so than the corruption of light that sought to consume his will. Shiramune Mol, Haurchefant Greystone…Why must he add another beloved’s name to the death ledger?
Everything that passed by his two-toned eyes felt like a blur of deep blue and black – like a picture of melancholy. He ran with labored breathes throughout the recreated city of Amaurot populated only with the slow motions of the Amaurotine shades that strolled by, seemingly unaware of the foundations of their existence.
Already, the others had begun to sense his hesitation no matter how he sought to compose himself. And every evening that man awaited him upon a bench, gloved hands clasped together, and head lowered with a knowing little smirk near the front of the Pendants Suite. Every evening, unable to deny the rapturous company, Seiro had invited him in.
“Enough! I know what I must do...”
Seiro had a dagger hidden in the length of his long boot. A surprise attack with everything he had left him in would surely work the best. He took in a sobering breath with brows furrowed and determination set in him when he burst through the double doors of the tall building. Only earlier, Seiro had seen Emet heading towards this place in an unsteady gait.
Suddenly, everything felt twisted in the sweetest of dreams and all his senses swallowed up in an inviting haze of rich gold and emerald. A grand ballroom filled with such a grandeur that he could not adequately wrap his mind around, wishing he could recall the freedom of open plains and the high inclines of mountains to explore. The soothing sounds of his father’s morin khuur.
The ballroom lay filled with a lively plethora of those same Amaurotine shades all dressed in lavishly decorated suits and long dresses spinning in perfect flow to the music and rhythm to the elegant waltz. Without fail, that same feeling occupied Seiro as it did on any special occasion – feeling out of place and unwilling to approach those set to the rhythm of the motions.
From the corner of his eye, Seiro had seen the dashingly handsome man make his way over with the outline of a black mask around his eyes, bedazzled with a glittering arrangement of ruby stones that were set in a glyph-like pattern, outfitted in black velveteen robes much like his own.
Resolutely, he had turned to escape through the double doors from wince he came – To look him even once in the eyes would be his undoing. But it was not long before the firm hand closing over his shoulder stopped him. As usual, Seiro felt as if caught in quicksand in emotions that sank him ever deeper with every moment passed in his presence.
“We *cannot* continue like this. Let me go.”
“Please, give me this. One last dance together…” The unexpected plea from Emet, quite unlike all he had seen so far, spoke volumes to his deep-seated anguish.
Unable to deny him, Seiro turned slowly to meet with the warmth of those hands he had come to know so well and crave beyond all reason, “I do not know how to dance. Not like this.” Zenos had been right about him. Seiro only felt the temptation of dance swell with a blade in hand and the promise of blood to spill-both he and his opponent teetering on the edge of life and death.
“You do know. You remembered after all.”
Emet spoke the words in such a sense of comfort like that sentiment alone was a relief to him. And this too was true – the moment that the air filled with a slow and sensual rhythm; he began to feel the steps come so naturally to him.
Seiro placed his left hand over to slink over his right shoulder with the firm press of a palm along his back in guidance. Their free hands came to interlock together to let the ascian take the lead, the xaela's long black tail swaying behind him all the while.
A swirling bliss of sights and sounds that cast away all his doubts and the painful throb in his chest from earlier subsiding. All that mattered was in the here and now in a moment they shared alone. Seiro lost himself in the elegance of the movements when they finally took their place amongst the dancers like the missing piece of a puzzle that should have been there from the beginning.
A part of him wished to never leave this little piece of cloud nine, but it would never leave his memory.

This picture has been living in my head rent-free ever since @isterofimias gave it to me. As a thank you, and as a little Christmas gift, I wrote a little snippet inspired by this image.
For @/isterofimias, thank you again for encouraging me to write more about Brilin this year. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you better. The happiest of holidays to you, and everyone. 💖🎄 Enjoy.
Pairing: Tamlin x Briar
Warnings: None
Contains: Christmas/Solstice Fluff
The towers of the Winter Court Palace appeared to be carved from ice itself. Misty gray clouds drifted low and grazed the sharp spires, releasing flecks of snow into the frosty twilight.
Tamlin took a slow, deep breath of crisp winter air as he faced the tall double doors leading into the palace.
He hadn’t been here since he was a child, and that was only because his father had allied with Winter during the Great War. Needless to say, it had not been under pleasant circumstances, and certainly not during the Winter Court’s holiest holiday. Out of all the Seven Courts, the Winter Court was the most isolated, and the most mysterious. But everything was different now. Amarantha’s reign was over, the Second War with Hybern had come and gone, and Koschei the Deathless was still just a whisper on the wind. It was a time of peace, no matter how brief, and it was a time to celebrate the end of another year… the year he met her.
As they walked through the large, heavy front doors, Tamlin looked down at the woman on his arm and smiled, feeling calmer at once. As if she had noticed him looking, Briar peered out from beneath the white fur-trimmed hood of her cloak and grinned back. Her fair cheeks were flushed from the cold, and her brown eyes sparkled under the light of a thousand tapered candles.
They parted only to allow the palace servants to take their cloaks, then Briar immediately returned her satin-gloved hand to its usual place in the crook of his arm. Though the decorations were dazzling—miniature potted evergreens glowing with faerie lights and swathed in silver ribbons, fine lace table streamers that resembled snowflakes, crystal bowls filled with assorted nuts, others filled with clove-scented pinecones, and leagues of evergreen garlands that graced every doorway—he only had eyes for her.
The soft green shade of her gown made her rosy skin glow, and it complemented the emerald pendant around her neck. Her dark hair flowed smoothly past her bare shoulders, and it was pinned back by a single rose behind her right ear.
As they walked arm-in-arm to greet their hosts, she noticed him staring and gave him a bemused smile. “What?”
He covered her hand on his arm and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I love you,” he said softly. “I really love you.”
Her smile softened into a loving look as he lifted her hand for a lingering kiss, and though he would have liked to kiss her fingers instead of her glove, that could wait until they were alone in their room.
“I love you, too,” she murmured.
Before he could say more, she glanced around, then—apparently finding what she was looking for—pulled on his hand.
“Come with me,” she said, eyes sparkling.
Though High Lord Kallias and Lady Viviane would be expecting them, he didn’t have it in him to protest as he followed Briar to a tall, arched doorway. He could never say no to her.
Still, he was confused as they stood beneath the arch between two rooms, neither entering or leaving either room as guests continued to appear in the hall behind them. When she only bit her full lower lip in anticipation of something, he tilted his head and asked, “What is it?”
She nodded to something above them. “Look up.”
He glanced up to see a green sprig tied with a shining silver ribbon, half-hidden by an evergreen bough. “Mistletoe?”
Briar nodded, blushing. “It’s a Winter Court tradition,” she said shyly.
“What is?”
She bounced on her toes, blushing madly. “Kissing beneath it.”
He could feel his own face grow warm even as he smiled. “Is that so?” he teased.
Her face broke into a grin. “It’s supposed to be good luck for the coming year.”
His smile softened as he reached out and cupped her face. “I don’t need luck,” he said, softly brushing her cheeks with his thumbs. “I have you.”
Her brown eyes shone as she leaned into his touch and covered his hands with her own. “I’m the lucky one,” she said softly.
Her eyes drifted closed as he bent his head and pressed his lips to hers.
In that moment, he felt like the luckiest High Lord who had ever lived, but before they parted, he gave her one more lingering kiss. She grinned and kissed him back. After all, a little more luck couldn’t hurt. And at this rate, it was going to be a very good year.

A Night at the Fall Fair
Alright everyone, I promised a fluffy short side story and uh. It's over 3k which is double the longest scorpion grass chapter soooo... here you go. This story is dedicated to @acertainmoshke, who gave me the idea for it, and helped me find some posts I needed to write it. Thank you Moshke~
Without further ado, here's the story:
"Alright kids, its costume reveal time!" Pat calls from down the hall.
You emerge from the room you chose to change in, as do Pat and Sylv.
Pat is wearing a floor length and rather form fitting black dress with flowy sleeves, a long straight black wig, and a black pendant necklace. Their makeup is also rather dark, their eye shadow in shades of deep gray, and their lipstick pomegranate red. They're holding a bundle of what appear to be rose stems.
"Morticia Addams?" Sylv guesses. He's also stepped into the hall.
"Ding ding ding, right on the money," Pat cheers. "I wanted to do drag, but I'm a little tall to be Gomez." They shrug.
"You're uhhh... That kid from that show, aren't you?" Pat guesses.
Sylv huffs and rolls his eyes.
"Um. He's a ghost, isn't he? His name is... Yukine?" You guess.
"Yeah, that's right," Sylv says with a smile. He seems surprised you got it.
"It looks good. Though I think you're right, blond doesn't quite suit you," Pat says.
Sylv shrugs. "I kinda figured. That's why I went with the wig instead of bleaching it."
The cartoon yellow of Sylv's wig is not quite blond and it is in stark contrast to his usual dark hair.
Also part of his costume are a green jacket with a faux fur rim to the hood, a white shirt, and some blue jeans.
The most striking part of his costume, even more so than the hair, is his eyes.
"Are those... colored contacts?" you ask.
Sylv snorts. "No, I just wished really hard and my eyes turned orange," he says. It's a bit sarcastic, but he's smiling and it lacks bite.
His shoulders hunch up a bit the way they do when he's annoyed. "They were a pain in the ass to get in though," he grumbles.
"I told you that contacts suck," Pat says in a sing song voice.
Sylv sighs in response.
"Anyway," he says with the careful enunciation of someone forcibly changing the subject, "Your costume is really cool too."
"Thank you," you say, returning the smile he gives you.
"You don't know what it's from, do you kid?" Pat says, nudging Sylv with their elbow.
"It's not just a creepier take on a sheet ghost?" He asks, nudging Pat back to get their elbow off his side.
"Nope!" Pat says popping the 'p'. "You wanna do the honors?" They ask, looking to you.
"Well. It's Charlie Brown's sheet ghost from. Um. Is it 'It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown?" you double check, looking at Pat.
"It is! Which is what we will be watching as soon as we get back from the festival, since someone hasn't seen it," they say, looking pointedly at Sylv.
Sylv rolls his eyes at them, but doesn’t say that he doesn’t want to watch the movie.
“That sounds nice,” you say.
“Excellent. These plans are now iron clad and inescapable. Now let’s get moving,” they say.
The drive to the fair doesn’t take long. Pat is behind the wheel. Sylv volunteered to drive home, since he doesn’t drink and Pat claims there is very good hard cider to be had at the fair.
It’s still a touch light out when your group arrives. This is perfect, because it will be much easier for you to select pumpkins for carving.
You make a beeline for the pumpkin patch right away.
“I’ll be over by the craft booths for a while. We’ll meet at the hayride atText if you need something,” Pat calls after you.
You give them a thumbs up.
Sylv follows along behind you at a more reasonable pace.
“You’re that excited for pumpkin carving?” he asks, sounding unconvinced of the worth of it.
You nod. “Yes. It’s a lot of fun. And it’s very different from a lot of other carving materials. I like it a lot.”
“Huh. Alright then,” he says with a shrug.
“Do you… not like pumpkin carving?” you ask.
Someone brushes past you, and you move more to the side of the makeshift aisle of the pumpkin patch. Sylv follows suit.
“I’ve never tried it. But I’m uh, not to fond of the idea of getting the guts out. I hear they’re slimy and I’m not too keen on sticking my hands into slimy things,” he explains, arms crossed defensively.
“Ah. That makes sense. Well. You don’t have to if you don’t want. But if I cleaned out the insides for you, maybe it would be more enjoyable?” you offer.
His mouth twists to the side a bit the way it does when he’s weighing the pros and cons of a thing. “Hm… I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try,” he says with a shrug.
“Oh. Okay then. I’ll pick out a pumpkin for you too, then,” you say with a smile.
You think you see him smile back before you turn your attention back to pumpkin seeking.
You walk up and down each row, making a mental note of potential good pumpkins as you go. Sylv follows you like a shadow, silently observing you.
It takes quite some time to find truly good pumpkins, light dying in the sky by the time you select three. The pumpkins are a little hard to hold, what with your costume getting in the way of your arms a bit.
“Want me to carry one?” Sylv offers, hands hovering close to the pumpkin nestled in the crook of your right arm.
“Um. Sure. Here,” you say, juggling the pumpkins around in your arms so he can take the one he picked out for him. “That one is for you.”
“Oh. Thanks,” he says, taking the pumpkin.
The two of you return to the car to deposit the pumpkins in the trunk.
“So, now what?” Sylv asks, casually leaning against the car. You still can’t get used to the way blond hair looks on him.
“Well. We have an hour until the hayride. Want to go play some of the games?” you say, pointing over to the tents and booths that house the fair games.
“Sure, sounds like fun,” he agrees.
This time he leads the way. It’s much more crowded by the games, you almost lose him a few times.
The games are all pretty typical for a fun fair. There’s ring toss, gold fish cup, duck pond… but there are a few that have been reskinned for the season, like the bean bag toss has players throwing bags at a vampire rather than a clown.
You and Sylv work your way through the games, knowing full well that most if not all of them are rigged.
Sylv somehow manages to be consistently better at games involving luck than you, which is alright because you’re better at the ones that require throwing skill. It all evens out.
You manage to knock over the full stack of milk bottles at one booth, which nets you a Big Prize.
You don’t really have any need for a unicorn plush that’s almost as tall as you are.
You offer it to Sylv.
“That’s sweet, but I don’t really want it either,” he says with an amused grin.
The two of you make meaningful eye contact.
“Foist it onto Pat?” you ask, matching his grin.
He nods decisively, “Yep.”
Pat will never be able to turn down a gift from the two of you, no matter how impractical.
You manage to find Pat after texting them. They’re over at the picnic tables enjoying a drink and a snack.
“Oh no,” Pat says as they see you approach.
“What?” Sylv says, with a shit eating grin.
“You know what,” Pat says, giving you both a stern look. They seem to be trying hard not to laugh.
“We won this for you,” you say, offering the oversized plush with your sweetest smile.
Pat loses their battle and huffs a laugh. “Uh huh. I’m sure you worked very hard to get it for me, and definitely didn’t get it accidentally and then not know what to do with it,” they say, arms crossed.
“We would never,” Sylv says, faux-scandalized.
“Uh huh. I’m so convinced,” Pat says dryly. They stand up from the table.
“Alright, you two watch my stuff while I go take our new friend to the car,” they say, taking the unicorn from you.
“Will do,” Sylv agrees.
The two of you sit down next to each other, with Sylv taking Pat’s seat.
“This is fun,” Sylv says, smiling softly.
You nod in agreement.
The two of you sit in companionable silence for a while, enjoying the cool autumn air and the lovely smells of the food and drink all around you.
Pat returns with a tray.
“Snack time,” they declare.
Sylv frowns.
“We’ve got some nonalcoholic hot cider for you,” Pat says, placing a tall styrofoam cup in front of Sylv.
“And… I wasn’t sure if you wanted a cold hard cider or not, Theo, so I got both. I’ll drink whichever one you don’t want,” they say, gesturing to the two remaining cups on the tray.
“I’ll take the hard cider,” you say after thinking it over.
Pat nods. “Nice, they’re pretty good. Though the other kind is also pretty good. Can’t beat fall-fresh cider.” They hand you your drink. You have to take the first layer of your costume off to drink it.
Underneath you’re wearing a yellow shirt with a black stripe and black pants.
The cider is pretty good. Crisp and tart, and it feels warm going down.
“And we’ve also got some mini-cakes to share. Pumpkin spice and caramel apple flavored,” Pat says, setting down the tray and sitting across from you. “Feel free to dig in.”
You take an apple cake. It’s very moist, and a little sticky to the touch, but pretty tasty.
Pat stares down Sylv until he takes a bite of a cake too, this one pumpkin spice.
You aren’t entirely sure what the story behind the cold war over Sylv’s eating habit is. You think it might be rude to ask, so you don’t pry.
Once Pat is satisfied that Sylv is eating, they dig in as well. They tell you all about how they found a really cool stall selling hand-woven baskets and ended up befriending the person who makes them, and also that they bought too much apple butter so the two of you will have to help them eat it.
In turn, Sylv tells them about how pumpkin picking and playing games went. You’re content to watch the two of them speak for the time being.
Ciders drunk and cakes eaten, your group cleans up and gets ready to go on the hayride. Sylv keeps his styrofoam cup with him, having not finished his cider.
The line for the hayride is a little long, since there are only so many people that can fit on one cart, even if they do have two carts in rotation.
Once your group is at the front of the line, it turns out that there are only two seats left. The next several groups behind you are groups of four or five.
“Alright, why don’t you two go on this one, and I’ll hop on the next one?” Pat offers.
You frown. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah, it’s all good. Maybe I’ll make some new friends,” they say with a smile.
You don’t doubt it. They could make friends with just about anyone they set their mind to befriending.
“Come on then. We’re holding up the ride,” Sylv says, not unkindly.
You follow him up onto the cart. The two of you sit close together, as the ride is a bit crowded.
Before the ride starts, Sylv whispers. “Do you want some of my cider? It’s still warm.” He holds out the cup.
“Oh. Um. Sure, I’ll try it,” you say, taking it from him. You try not to think any silly thoughts about all this.
It’s a very nice cider, well-spiced and not too sweet. You notice that the cup is still mostly full. “Do you not like it?”
Sylv shrugs. “It’s fine.” He doesn’t seem to want to talk about it anymore.
You hand the cup back as the ride starts to move.
The first jump scare does indeed scare you. The sound you make is a little too shrill to not be embarrassing. You can’t help but fold in on yourself a little bit.
Sylv leans in a little closer to you and starts telling you all about the history of scare rides in a hushed voice.
You’re more than happy to listen. You always like listening to him talk, but when he’s explaining something he’s passionate about he really lights up in a way that is terribly endearing to you.
He talks the whole way through the ride. You think this is probably more enjoyable than it would be if he were silent.
He helps you step down off of the cart once it’s over.
After everyone gets off the ride, one last scare actor jumps out at you, some sort of evil bloody scarecrow.
You yelp and grab onto Sylv reflexively.
He manages not to spill his drink. He looks pretty amused, but it doesn’t seem like he’s laughing at you.
“Sorry,” you say as you let go.
He makes a ‘don’t worry about it’ gesture. “It’s fine.”
The two of you wait for Pat’s ride to be done with in companionable silence.
Pat also yelps when the final scare happens, which makes you feel a little better about it all.
Sylv is stifling a laugh this time.
You suspect it’s more about how Pat’s outfit has straw bits stuck all in it. There’s even some in their hair.
“Wha- how the hell do neither of you have any hay on you?” Pat complains. “That’s just unfair,” they say, crossing their arms and frowning.
“Maybe the fabric of your gown is just more prone to snagging?” you offer.
Pat sighs. “That’s probably it. And you two jokers have short hair, too…”
You shrug.
“Anyway. That was fun, did you have fun?” Pat asks.
You nod.
“Yeah, it was a decent ride. The people doing the makeup and costumes here are talented,” Sylv says.
Pat agrees.
“Alright. Next up is to drink more hot cider. It’s getting pretty chilly out. Are you two warm enough?” Pat asks.
Sylv shrugs. He has the advantage of having a coat built into his costume.
You’re currently wearing the sheet ghost portion of your costume as a sort of cloak, which is doing alright to keep you warm, for now. You tell Pat as much.
“Right. Well, you two go have fun then. If you split up, we’ll meet back at the car at say… 10:30 if we don’t all see each other again before then, alright?” They say.
“Sounds good,” Sylv agrees.
You nod.
Pat waves as they head back to the food area.
“Do you want to split up?” Sylv asks?
You shrug. “I don’t mind staying together if you don’t.”
“Let’s stick together then,” Sylv decides with a smile.
The two of you wander around. You’ve already seen most of what there is to see. You find the craft booths, which are interesting. There are a lot of talented craftspeople and artists around. You end up buying some little flowers carved from wood. One each for Pat, Sylv, and yourself. You pocket them to give later.
After that, it seems like you might be done for the night.
“Is there anything else here to d-Corn Maze!” Sylv says, cutting himself off in excitement.
You find yourself being half-dragged along behind him, as he’s grabbed you by the hand.
“Ah, you like corn mazes?” you ask as the two of you enter. Sylv slows his pace once you’re ensconced in the endless walls of grain.
“I’ve never been in one before. Always wanted to try it though,” he says. He finally lets go of your hand.
“Oh, I see. Well. Hopefully it will be fun.
You let Sylv dictate which turns to make, since he seemed so excited about it.
He gets utterly and completely lost.
You have a fairly good grasp of where you are in the maze. You’ve always had a good sense of direction, and the little lanterns scattered about are in different shapes and colors, making for good landmarks.
“Theo,” Sylv says, plaintive, “We’re going to die in here. We’re going to die and then haunt this place as ghosts forever because we’re never getting out.”
You can’t help but smile. You’re pretty sure he’s being overdramatic for fun.
“Well, then it will be a much more authentic haunted corn maze, won’t it?” you say with a shrug.
“I can’t believe you want us to die here,” he complains.
Sylv’s phone rings.
“Yeah?” he answers the phone in his normal tone of voice. “The corn maze. What? No. We’re totally not lost… Oh, is it that late? Uh. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. See you,” he says.
“So Pat’s going to come find us. We’re supposed to say put,” he says with a sheepish smile.
“Ah. Then I guess we will stay here,” you say, smiling back.
“Help me finish this before they get here?J” Sylv asks, offering the cider to you again. You accept it and take a sip. It’s cold now, but still pretty tasty.
After you take a few sips, you give it back. “You have to drink some too,” you say.
His shoulders slump. “Okay,” he says, like he’s accepting a burdensome task.
The two of you do manage to finish the drink before Pat finds you, though it doesn’t take long for them to arrive.
“Oh good, you two haven’t died and decided to haunt the maze,” Pat observes.
“We came pretty close,” Sylv says with a laugh.
You nod in agreement.
“Right. Time to get out of here. If we take too long, we’re not going to have time for our movie before I fall asleep,” Pat says.
“Oh no, we wouldn’t want that,” Sylv says, sarcastic. His smile is genuine though, so you think he might just be giving Pat shit for fun.
Pat nudges Sylv’s shoulder with their own in a friendly manner, but doesn’t say anything else about it.
Pat leads the way out of the maze pretty quickly. You were right in thinking you knew the way out.
Once you’re out of the maze, you notice that Sylv is no longer walking next to you.
“Sylv?” you call out. You turn back into the maze. You hope he didn’t get separated and then lost again.
“Boo!” Sylv shouts, jumping out from around a corner.
You startle, not expecting it at all.
“Hey,” you say in a complaining tone, crossing your arms.
“That’s for not helping me get un-lost,” he says with a big grin.
Well. It’s hard to stay mad at him when he smiles like that.
“I suppose that’s fair,” you agree.
Sylv laughs goodnaturedly at your easy acceptance.
“Come on, let’s catch up with Pat before it’s past their bedtime,” he says.
The two of you hurry back to the car.
Pat is leaning against the back passenger side door, smoking a cigarette.
“Pat,” Sylv says.
Pat shrugs, but stubs out their cigarette in the dirt. “You two were taking a while. Just wanted to pass the time.
Sylv gives them a look, but doesn’t comment further. Another war between them, though this one is slightly less cold.
Sylv gets into the driver’s seat, and Pat into the back, leaving shotgun free for you.
“Did we all have fun?” Pat asks.
“I’d say so. We got you a pumpkin to carve,” Sylv says.
“And a giant unicorn plush. A night full of presents,” Pat replies.
“I also got some flowers,” you add. You turn to hand Pat theirs.
“Huh. Thanks,” Pat says, accepting it. “Y’know… When I pulled the nine of pentacles this morning, this wasn’t the sort of windfall I was expecting. Not gonna complain though,” they say, a smile apparent in their voice.
“Glad you’re happy with it,” Sylv says. Then, after a beat, he asks: “Did you have fun, Theo? I know I kind of dragged you around for a lot of it.” He sounds slightly apologetic.
“I did. This was a very lovely outing, and hanging out with you was nice. Thank you,” you say, genuine.
Sylv’s shoulders hunch up a bit, but he doesn’t sound annoyed when he says: “Don’t mention it.”
The rest of the drive is peacefully quiet.
Once back home, everyone changes out of their costumes and into more comfortable clothes.
Your costume is the fastest to remove, so you end up getting back to the living room first.
By the time you’ve found Pat’s dvd copy of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” your friends have both made their way out of their respective bedrooms.
“Perfect, thanks Theo,” Pat says as they settle down into their favorite chair.
Sylv sits down on the loveseat and echoes, “Yeah, thanks.”
Once you’ve got the movie playing, you sit down next to Sylv.
It’s a cute movie, and you’re happy to watch it again.
Though this showing is supposed to be for Sylv’s benefit, and he falls asleep about halfway through. He slumps sideways, his head coming to rest on your shoulder. You don’t mind much.
Once the movie is over, Pat looks away from the screen to the couch.
They chuckle when they see Sylv.
“This is a strict no sleeping on the couch household. You have a bed, go get in it,” they say in a slightly raised voice.
Sylv stirs and shoots them a dirty look from barely cracked eyes. You notice that Sylv still has the colored contacts in.
“Sorry,” Sylv says when he realizes he’s laying on you. He sits up.
“It’s alright,” you say, rubbing at the back of your neck.
“Goodnight. See you tomorrow,” Pat calls as they head to their bedroom.
“G’night,” Sylv calls back.
“Good night,” you echo.
Sylv stands up and stretches. “Right. Time for bed,” he says, and starts towards his room.
“Don’t forget to take your contacts out,” you call after him.
He swears. “Ugh, thanks Theo,” he grumbles. You suspect he’s more upset about having to take them out than the reminder.
You head to bed yourself. Drifting to sleep, you think you had a pretty nice time tonight. You hope your dreams will be just as sweet.
#not an update#side story#this is an au where theo has not died and instead living with Pat and Sylv#just about everything else is the same#oh except i guess pat's house hasn't burned down yet either

008. Dotharl
Nomin comes to learn more about the desert than she expected, as well as receives a pendant from Bayarmaa made from the copper piece from her Tumet trial. The Sagahl van eventually reaches the Dotharl Khaa, and Nomin is told about the souls of Dotharl...and even how souls of others are accepted into the tribe under certain circumstances. During all of this, she also connects with a young member of the Dotharl whose experiences resonate with her own that she immediately finds herself comforted by in some way.
Word count: 4,894
Steppe by Steppe Chapter List
A day and a half transpired as the Sagahli van pressed forward through Nhaama’s Retreat. In the wake of the harsh sunlight that heated up the sands to incredible temperatures, Bayarmaa and Barghujin took the time one morning to ensure the back of Esenaij’s wain was covered by a thick cotton canopy so that Nomin was shaded from the sun's harsh rays. In the meantime, those who walked took lighter clothes from their packed belongings to wrap around their heads and bodies, also taking the time to get Nomin dressed in the light and airy garments for herself.
“What are these for?” Nomin asked as Bayarmaa helped get her dressed lightly, but protectively.
“To protect you from the harsh heat. These clothes will let your skin breathe while allowing the wind to come through and cool your body. The sun will damage and dehydrate us if we aren't careful out here during Azim’s hours,” Bayarmaa explained. “We may be able to find glorious bounties in the desert if we know what to look for, but even that won't sustain us if we succumb to heat sickness or being too parched to function.”
In addition to helping Nomin dress appropriately for the desert heat, Baryamaa produced a leather cord with the copper filigree. There were some beads made of polished stone and wood that also adorned the necklace, making it prettier to look at. Almost instantly, Nomin beamed widely when it was given to her.
“You made it into a necklace!” Nomin exclaimed, drawing the cord around her neck.
“Mhm! When you told me about it, I took some nights to help shave it down and blunt it a bit so it wouldn’t cut anything anymore. I hope that’s okay? I probably could have fit it into the backing without doing too much…” Bayarmaa started explaining, hoping that some of her work with it would have been fine by Nomin.
“I think you made it pretty!” Nomin happily said, her tail flicking upward every now and then as it fell back into place. She held the copper piece of the necklace in her hand, smiling all the while as she turned it to and fro, letting the sun glint off of it every now and then.
“Then I’m glad,” Bayarmaa replied simply, smiling warmly as she double checked Nomin’s garments to make sure they were secured before telling her to get back onto the wain.
Nomin had her own waterskin that Bayarmaa packed before they fully set off from the Sagahl Iloh, thankfully. It was not something Nomin thought of, so having the water to sup upon while she rode in the back of the shaded wain made all the difference for beating the heat along with the clothes she was made to wear. While she was back there, she had been given the responsibility of ensuring the fruit and vegetables were nestled safely and securely, as well as remaining largely undamaged.
Travel was impeded at one point thanks to a pack of gedan that were traveling the sands. The pack was not large, thankfully; five of them. Nomin was the first to get carried out of harm's way thanks to Daritai's instinct that led him to scooping her up and out of the way from getting her arm chomped by one of the charging hounds. All the while, Barghujin and Keuken held themselves between the rest of the Sagahl and the pack of gedan, their lances pointed forward.
Bayarmaa’s disposition also changed, her hands flew to her bow and arrows to take aim and fire. Once Esenaij quickly got himself freed from the wain’s harness, he also collected his bow and arrows, providing supporting shots from a distance. Though the confrontation with the gedan took more time than they cared for, two were slain, and another two were injured before the remaining gedan ran off to seek easier prey elsewhere.
None of the Sagahl seemed particularly pleased about what transpired, though they paid respects for the beastkin they slayed. Nomin, on the other hand, had been far more hopeful that perhaps there could have been an exception to their ways. Her mouth watered for meat, though it was not meant to be. So, she practiced in paying respects, at least, for the fallen gedan who were now returned to Nhaama’s embrace.
Even though the Sagahl were not particularly pleased about the situation, each of them took on a job of bleeding, gutting, skinning, and butchering the two gedan they fell. Just about everything was collected, anything considered refuse being left to the sand. Hide, bones, meat, fat, sinew… Everything considered useful was prepared and packed away carefully in ways that Nomin never even considered until that moment!
“I'm sorry if that was my fault…” Nomin started when she helped Esenaij with cleaning the bones. She felt guilty, and went on into the why of it. “The Tumet taught some of the khüüked before our trials that if we were to see our trial at all, we needed to avoid the wildlife of the Steppe because small auri like me are more appealing to them as prey…”
Despite Esenaij’s sour disposition on most occasions, he gave a long, resigned sigh. Setting the bones aside in a burlap sack, he looked down at her. “It was not your fault, Nomin. This part of the Retreat is gedan territory, so it will not be uncommon to find them roaming about. Besides, it was not as if you went out of your way to find them and cause trouble. Small groups like that often grow desperate for food, as they cannot often hunt for larger prey with such few numbers.”
Esenaij’s words were gentler than normal, and Nomin’s tail flicked upwards slightly and tentatively as she looked up at him. A small smile graced her lips before she went back to help clean more of the bones that were left over from Daritai butchering the meat. The two of them carried on with idle conversation here and there, Nomin’s curiosities being answered about why they were expending so much effort in preparing the gedan remains if the Sagahl do not partake in eating or using the pieces of beastkin.
“Just because it's our way of life doesn't mean we should let it go to waste when it could benefit someone else who's way of life is different from our own,” Esenaij explained. “The Dotharl won the Naadam, and while our gift to them will surely be appreciated, their way of life here in the desert often revolves around their oasis. Finding food out in the desert is hard enough, they will likely appreciate the added meat once it's delivered.”
“And keeping it packed in that crate with ice crystals will help it stay fresh while we travel?” Nomin asked, glancing back toward Daritai and Keuken working on getting more of the meat cut, cleaned, and wrapped in parchment before packing it away.
“The temperatures the ice crystals will keep the meat at will prevent it from spoiling, yes…” Esenaij replied. He looked thoughtful for a moment, trying to think of any examples that Nomin could know. Finally, as he tied up the bag of bones, he said: “if you've ever encountered snow, perhaps the Tumet have dug holes in it to help preserve meat or even milk? The ice crystals essentially do the same thing without the need for such a heavy winter.”
Nodding along, Nomin hummed in thought at the information she had just received and reached for her waterskin to help wash her hands now that they were done. Though more time was spent getting the gedan remains situated and put away, Nomin watched with intense curiosity as even the hides were stored along with the ice crystals. When she asked about that, she was told that none of them had any materials to even start a tanning process, and that would have to be left to the Dotharl to take care of once delivered.
In the rest of their travels across the desert of Nhaama’s Retreat to the Dotharl Khaa, Nomin kept an eye out for anything that could have attacked them. Gedan, manzasiri, anala…anything that Esenaij and Bayarmaa had told her about, and everything that she learned about when she actually traveled alongside the Tumet as one of their children. What also helped were the recollections and information that Barghujin, Keuken, and Daritai were willing to impart as well in order to help keep Nomin aware.
It was fortuitous that they met with little else on the venture to the Dotharl’s oasis. Of course, when they met with the Dotharl guards, they had stopped them, their words terse and abrasive before Esenaij said that he and the others were here to deliver the tribe a gift. Noting the deeper blue colors of the Sagahl, as well as being shown the bounties of grain and fruit, the Dotharli guards soon relented and allowed the group through.
“Nomin, do you want to explore the oasis while Esenaij and the others make the delivery?” Bayarmaa asked, walking over to Nomin.
“Can I?” Nomin chirped eagerly in question, a smile growing on her face. She eagerly hopped out of the wain and looked around. She had already been quite taken with the sights of the oasis, but the idea of getting to walk around enticed her. She already noted that the ger that were weathered and worn, their blues fading from their time in the sun, day after day.
“Since we're welcome here, we can walk around as long as we don't cause trouble. You should go ahead and walk around as well; get your legs stretched after sitting so long in the wain most of our journey,” Bayarmaa said.
Walking over to Bayarmaa, Nomin elected to take up holding her hand for the time being. She knew that when the Tumet spoke of the Dotharl, they often had few nice things to say. Honestly, that recollection made Nomin just a little nervous about meandering around the oasis, even with Bayarmaa’s reassurance.
The two of them traveled the oasis together, Nomin peeking around curiously before the sound of a baby crying made her pause, tail stiffening as she looked toward the sound. Normally, Nomin would have just ignored it, but when she saw the cluster of Dotharli people at one of the open-faced structures, she pointed it out to Bayarmaa. Especially after seeing Sadu at the center point of them, a swaddled baby held before her by the winner of the year's Naadam, Maa.
“What are they doing?” Nomin asked Bayarmaa, turning her head to look up at the elder Xaela.
“It's somewhat of a naming ceremony, I suppose you could call it…” Bayarmaa started in response, bringing a finger to her chin as she thought over her words.
“Like how I would have gotten a name from my parents if I went back to the Tumet after my trial?”
Bayarmaa paused at the question before she frowned slightly, contemplating how to answer Nomin. She tugged on Nomin’s hand lightly to start walking toward the group. “Um…perhaps? Though, surely a lot more different. Why don’t we get closer to watch?”
Nomin followed along with Bayarmaa, feeling at least somewhat comforted by her presence as they neared. Nomin witnessed Sadu take the crying babe into her hands, surprisingly delicately as she hushed and rocked it to quiet it down. Once the wails had died down and ceased, Nomin watched as the baby gurgled and reached up, clutching some of Sadu's white locks as it giggled.
“Sadu Khatun, please tell me whose soul has entered the babe born from my wife?” Maa asked Sadu, getting down on his knees and bowing in respect to her.
Sadu herself, even while holding the swaddled babe, stood tall and proud. Her features were set with that same kind of air as she brought a finger down to stroke the infant’s cheek. Nomin watched as Sadu’s expression became more focused, her eyes staring down into those of the babe’s. Her brow furrowed, and soon, Sadu handed the baby back to Maa with a grin.
“This child bears the soul of Dhunan! The brave warrior who brought down several Oronir, Buduga, and Chaghan to see you, Maa, take hold of the ovoo! We will sing to this child praise of what he did during the Naadam, and how he would always put the other Dotharli before himself with the power of seventy manzasiri!” Sadu proclaimed proudly and with conviction. She took up her staff and rammed the butt of it into the ground, her free hand resting upon her hip. “Even in his past lives, Dhunan displayed great feats of strength! In this life, we shall ensure he grows strong, telling him of how his past lives trained and trained!”
The hair on the back of Nomin’s scalp and neck stood on end once the crowd of Dotharl started cheering, chanting the name of the baby with glee and mirth. She staggered back a bit before hiding somewhat behind Bayarmaa. Her tail wiggled stiffly with surprise at the raucous cheering. That was a little bit overwhelming in terms of excitement -- especially around such ruthless fighters during the Naadam.
“... I want to go back to the wain…” Nomin said, staying behind Bayarmaa before looking up at her.
“Is something wrong?” Bayarmaa asked, looking at Nomin curiously.
Nomin shook her head and pursed her lips, her hold tightening upon Bayarmaa’s hand momentarily. She then huffed lightly and said, “...It’s loud here.”
Bayarmaa offered a sheepish smile before turning and leading the way back; “very well. Come on, then. We’ll await Esenaij and the others once we find where they’re at.”
Following along after Bayarmaa, Nomin glanced over her shoulder at the cheering Dotharl at the khatun's seat before looking back ahead of her. While they walked, Nomin inquired about the Dotharl's naming and why it seemed like everyone had any kind of name, her examples being that both Sadu and Maa seemed to have names that would be more fit for the opposite gender. Bayarmaa only chuckled in response and did her best to explain how she felt was best.
“It's actually really no different than if someone were to have named their babe Nergüi, I feel…” Bayarmaa started. “In that the meaning is to mislead bad spirits. As such, it's actually not uncommon for parents to give names that would typically be associated with us to babes that are male when brought into the world.”
Nomin hummed in thought, her gaze going to the ground as they walked. She thought back to the naming ceremonies she had previously been witness to when children who freed themselves eventually returned to the Tumet Iloh for their pre-Naadam migration. Recalling some of what she heard and saw, she finally spoke, “the Tumet don't name us as babes, though. The names given to those deemed worthy at the naming ceremonies are usually given by the khan or khatun. Sometimes the parents.”
“Oh…” Bayarmaa frowned, realizing that perhaps more gendered names were what Nomin found herself used to if that was how naming went among the Tumet. “I can see your confusion, then. When it comes to the Dotharl, their souls have no prejudice to the babes they come back to within the tribe, so you get a lot of members that have names that may be confusing on a surface level because Sadu kahtun sees the soul within the babe and declares their previous life who now inhabits it.
“But it's really nothing to worry about overall. You chose your name, after all.” Bayarmaa gave Nomin a grin. “Nothing would stop Esenaij nor I from changing our names to something we preferred. I guess you could say that if I did that, I would be choosing a name worthy of me. Just like you chose a name worthy of you, hm?”
Nomin's brow rose, and her mouth fell slightly agape at the idea. “I didn't think about it like that. I guess you're right! Just as I am worthy, I chose a name worthy of me! It could have been a boy's name, too, if I wanted!”
The two of them made it back to the wain where they were greeted by Barghujin and Keuken. There was also another boy there who donned the light blue deel of Dotharli youth standing with them, a ripened plum in his hands that he seemed to have been nibbling on. Nomin’s gaze lingered on the boy for a moment, her tail curling inquisitively as she looked from him back up at Barghujin and Keuken.
“There you two are!” Keuken greeted both Nomin and Bayarmaa. “Esenaij and Daritai are close to done, I imagine, with their audience with the Dotharl elder. They’ve already brought in the gedan remains that we got for them to distribute later. I think last I heard, they’re discussing some of the collection methods of gathering some of the herbs and fruits that grow within the desert.”
Bayarmaa let go of Nomin’s hand and then placed a hand on her back, ushering her forward.
“Go wait in the wain for a bit. They might need me to help with some stuff once Esenaij is done.” Bayarmaa’s attention then went to both Barghujin and Keuken. She then approached the other two Sagahl to talk to them while Nomin tentatively approached the wain, her attention having gone back to the unknown Dotharli boy.
The Dotharli boy was basking in the shade of the cover that was used for the wain, his own attention falling upon Nomin as she approached.
“Hello,” the boy spoke, making Nomin freeze for a moment, her tail flicking with added hesitation. Her actions and uncertain expression made the boy laugh rather heartily before he apologized: “S-sorry! I don’t mean to laugh…”
The boy then composed himself, donning a pleasant expression and asking: “are you here with Mister Esenaij and the other Sagahl? I-I mean, I guess that’s a silly question since you’re wearing the Sagahl colors. Just…Mister Esenaij sometimes makes deliveries to the other tribes for trade. He’s given me some dawn plums before. I’ve seen the others before, but I’ve never seen you or your sister before.”
Nomin gave the boy a quizzical look, tilting her head slightly. She neared the wain, walking under the shade herself and soon leaning against it. Every now and then, Nomin glanced at the boy, wondering who he was and why he opted to approach the Sagahl van when it seemed other Dotharl were more interested in their own doings rather than greeting them. He was a couple ilms taller than she was, his horns taking shape into becoming horns that curved outward and then forward.
Though Nomin thought over her questions, she felt too shy to speak up right away. Especially since she was still uncertain about whether or not she should speak with the Dotharl freely after stories she had heard from the Tumet. However, she did think to herself that having more friends her age would have been nice -- even if they were part of different tribes. It would have been fun to meet them again, whether in Reunion or elsewhere.
And so the two children stood in silence for a long time.
The pleasant look on the boy’s face faded into worry as he nibbled further on his plum. Nomin could really only rock back and forth on her feet, her back bumping against the wooden railing of the wain. Neither of them were really sure what to do or say for the most part. When the boy made no effort to move away, however, Nomin let out a silent sigh through her nose.
“I’m Arik,” the boy finally said, introducing himself.
Silence hung in the air again for a time.
“My name is Nomin…” Nomin slowly introduced herself in kind. She turned her head to look at him again, noting more of his features. Given how it seemed this Arik was not particularly shy about approaching the wain nor the other Sagahl members, Nomin then asked: “does…does Esenaij come here often?”
“Sure! The Dotharl don’t often venture too far from the oasis to go to Reunion. Even then, the Dotharl, er, we don’t have too much use for some of the trinkets and things there when we can trade the Uyagir for arrowheads and ore, and the oasis being here means hunting is generally pretty easy for people like my mother.” Arik seemed pleased enough to explain how the Dotharl were pretty well supplied overall.
Arik then turned the partially eaten plum in his hands before taking another bite. After he swallowed, he continued after a momentary pause, “...we don’t get a lot of things that are grown from the earth around here, though. Not like any fruit in abundance, or grains that we can turn into bread.”
Nomin’s brow twitched with bemusement at Arik’s way of wording things and placing emphasis on addressing the Dotharl on their own versus including himself among them with ‘we.’
“Are you not Dotharl?” Nomin asked, dropping her voice to a whisper. The question made Arik look at her in surprise. However, he started shaking his head in answer.
“N-no. I mean. I am! Just…when the khan -- the Sadu before the one we have now -- looked into my eyes, he said that he saw no one he recognized. The Dotharli woman who gave birth to me…she told me stories of a Noykin horse master who was best friends with her husband…my father. His name was Arik, and he had died in the midst of a terrible anala attack,” Arik shuddered, leaving some details unspoken. “My mother told me that my previous incarnation could tame any horse if given only a handful of days -- and nearly any creature.”
“That’s pretty amazing…” Nomin breathed, genuinely thinking the brief bits that were told to her were interesting and enthralling. Even if she did not know of the Noykin herself, she was still captivated by the idea of reincarnation now that she was speaking to one of the Dotharl herself. “So…you’re a reincarnated Noykin? How did that happen that you are now of the Dotharl? When Bayarmaa was explaining it to me, she said that the Dotharl souls come back into Dotharl babes. How do souls from not-Dotharl come into the babes?”
Arik shrugged, his face twisting in some confusion over it himself. After a moment’s consideration, he finally said to her, “my mother tells me that sometimes friends of the Dotharl -- those who have given their lives for the lives of Dotharl -- are invited to our tribe through death. That must be what happened to my previous life. I died in my last life and was invited to the Dotharl…which is probably why I never feel too welcome in their celebrations.”
“I kind of know what that feels like,” Nomin replied, the mutual understanding of feeling like an outsider to their own tribe formulating that start of a bond. She looked at Arik and told him: “I actually come from the Tumet tribe. I passed my trial, but…I didn’t want to go back. I never really felt like I could get used to the Tumet traditions. It’s why Mister Esenaij and Miss Bayarmaa now take care of me! Esenaij took me in shortly after I arrived at Reunion.”
Arik offered Nomin a small smile at her story, more because he felt somewhat reassured by her words. Then he looked confused, as if he realized something.
“Wait, if you’re from the Tumet…did you get a name from them, or from the Sagahl?” Arik asked. “And that woman…she’s your sister, right? Is she also originally from the Tumet? She has markings like you do…”
“I named myself!” Nomin replied cheerfully and without hesitation. “And…that’s just Miss Bayarmaa. She has markings like me, but she’s Esenaij’s sister. I guess she’s my sister now, too, though.”
“Huh…” Arik’s expression softened at that. “I never considered that you could name yourself… Do the Tumet usually let you do that? Or…I guess…”
Nomin shook her head emphatically. She told Arik about the naming ways that the Tumet normally employed as she crawled into the back of the wain to get herself situated a little more comfortably. The more that Nomin spoke with Arik as the other Sagahl got the goods from their wain given to the Dotharl elder, the more she found herself happily talking about all kinds of things with him. From what he knew of the Noykin, to what Nomin often found herself enjoying now that she was part of the Sagahl.
During their conversations, Nomin told Arik how she ended up naming herself, recalling the trial of the Tumet and how she always kind of liked the blue markings on her scales. How they and her general appearance were the inspiration for just calling herself how she saw herself: lapis. She admitted it could have been more creative, but that the name ‘Nomin’ always just felt right as soon as it entered her mind.
Their conversations went on as the wain was progressively emptied of its contents. Arik finished his plum long before they were addressed by Bayarmaa, who greeted them both with a pleasant expression on her face.
“I’m glad the two of you seem to be making fast friends,” Bayarmaa said as she neared them. She looked from Arik to Nomin. “We’ll be staying the night within the care of the Dotharl, Nomin. I know you complain sometimes about not being able to eat meat since coming to us from the Tumet.”
Bayarmaa then dropped her voice to a whisper.
“But, if you keep it to yourself, I’ll let it slide that you eat some tonight with the meals that will be cooked tonight,” Bayarmaa said. “I can’t expect you to adopt the Sagahl diet immediately if you were used to meat with the Tumet for ten years. Just work your way to it. If you can, try to eat less meat than you normally would. I’d rather you ease yourself into our diet than pick it up immediately and end up resenting it.”
“So we’ll get to hang out for another day?” Arik excitedly asked, his mouth cracking into a wide smile.
“Mhm~” Bayarmaa hummed in response. She then focused her attention on Arik. “Well, maybe not a whole day, but at least for a good few bells.”
Bayarmaa glanced back at Nomin before speaking again to Arik; “thank you for keeping Nomin company. She’s slowly been making friends with the Sagahl, but it’s really nice that it seems she’s taken such a shine to you…Arik, was it? Esenaij mentioned your name when I asked about you.”
Arik’s smile became pursed for a moment as he looked down at the sparse grass underneath him in a bashful manner.
“It was fun, Miss Bayarmaa. I’m glad that she got to come with the Sagahl this time around,” Arik shyly replied.
Thinking on how Esenaij was typically more prepared to go and get himself out in an early fashion, Nomin brought her hands up to the leather cord around her neck. She slipped the necklace off that held the decorative copper piece in it. Though she stared at it for a long moment, Nomin really did feel a deep kinship with Arik and how their experiences within their tribes -- former or current -- made them feel.
“Just in case Mister Esenaij wants to leave right away in the morning, here!” Nomin said, thrusting her hand out and offering Arik the copper pendant that Bayarmaa had fixed up for her during their travel from the Sagahl Iloh to the Dotharl Khaa.
“What is it?” Arik asked as he tentatively reached out to accept the necklace.
“Remember what I said about my trial?”
“Yeah…but…what does that have to do with this necklace?” Arik looked down at the copper pendant as the rest of the leather cord and its bits and bobs pooled into the palm of his hand. His expression fell into bemusement as he looked over the item.
“Miss Baryamaa helped turn the copper piece I used to cut myself free into a necklace! I want you to have it. It’ll be like a promise that we’ll meet again one day!” Nomin explained, grinning. She looked back at Bayarmaa after mentioning her, looking to see what her reaction was. When Nomin saw that Bayarmaa had that familiar, gentle smile on her face, Nomin beamed as she looked back at Arik. “When we meet again, you can give it back. Or…maybe you can just keep it.”
“‘Keep it’?” Arik parroted back, his face twisting into further confusion. “Isn’t it important to you? Something that you used to free yourself with that you wanted to keep?”
“Well, yeah. If you want to keep it, you can. If not, just keep it until we meet again!” Nomin said. Puffing out her chest with a sense of accomplishment, she smiled proudly. “Since you know how important it is, I expect you to take good care of it!”
An amused scoff fell from Arik’s lips before he slipped the cord around his neck. The necklace was loose still, even around his neck as he looked down at the copper piece in the palm of his hand again. “Alright. It’s a promise then.”

Decorative Lamps and Lighting
With regards to lighting - it's not always about functionality. Lighting can be fun, and click here to learn more decorative lighting all the more so. Simply see Christmas tree lights and how much tomfoolery is to be had decorating the tree, with all its glitter and lights.
What about involving lighting for decorative objects, is that in itself, lighting is something mystical. Besides the fact that it looks lovely yet the light it exudes is something perfect to behold. To that end we as a whole wonder about Christmas trees when the lights are switched on interestingly.
Decorative lighting adds an almost otherworldly touch to the articles it illuminates. There are numerous ways you can use lighting to add that decorative touch to your home or surroundings. First of all, many table lamps and floor lamps arrive in various styles and designs. It is feasible to buy flawlessly crafted decorative table lamps, maybe adorned with hanging dew drop beads that get the light and dazzle with reflected variety.
Take the traditional chandelier with every one of its aspects and delightful glass surfaces that shimmer and shimmer so dynamically. Chandeliers are a really lovely lighting fixture designed to look shockingly better once the light source is switched on.
Decorative lighting needs to be functional, to a degree, as well as being only for fancy purposes, any other way it can appear to be a piece trivial to have. Stained Tiffany glass shades are a great illustration of a light fixture that is both decorative and functional. A Tiffany light fitting provides, whether it is a Tiffany style floor lamp, decorative Tiffany table lamp or Tiffany hanging pendant light, is good for a specific reason. It goes beyond just being a light source because Tiffany style light fittings are an object of beauty and are highly admired for their iridescent glass shading for oneself as well as their scandalous, bejeweled designs, whether it is the dragonfly, peacock plume or wisteria. Indeed, even with the light turned off, a Tiffany light fitting is an object of beauty.
Spotlights are one more type of indoor light fitting that can fill double needs as functional lighting and decorative lighting. They can be used to illuminate specific region of a room and yet can be deployed to illuminate an item too. By illuminating the article from above there is no glare and the actual item is illuminated by splendid light.
Old-fashioned antique lamps made from texture and edged with hanging beads and supported by an extravagant, adorned lamp base are one more illustration of decorative lighting that likewise fills in as a light source around evening time. The added reward of antique style lighting fixtures is that they add a dash of marvelousness and grandeur, suggestive of a former period, to your surroundings.

Room with a View: Design Tricks for Making Small Spaces Feel Expansive
Small spaces can feel cozy and charming, but they can also feel cramped if not designed with care. The good news is, with a few smart design tricks, you can make even the tiniest room feel expansive and airy. Whether you're dealing with a compact apartment, a small living room, or a cozy bedroom, these design strategies will help open up your space and give it a sense of grandeur.
1. Opt for Light and Neutral Colors
Light, neutral colors create a sense of openness and make a room feel larger. Shades like soft whites, light grays, and beige reflect natural light, giving your space a bright and airy feel. You don’t have to stick to one color—combine a soft neutral on the walls with pops of muted tones in furniture and decor. This allows the room to feel calm and open, without overwhelming the senses.

2. Use Mirrors to Create the Illusion of Space
Mirrors are a designer’s secret weapon when it comes to making a small space feel bigger. By reflecting light and the surrounding environment, mirrors can give the illusion of depth and open up the room. Consider placing a large mirror on one wall, or use mirrored furniture pieces or accessories to reflect both light and style. The strategic placement of mirrors can make a world of difference in a small room.
3. Go Vertical: Use Tall Furniture and Vertical Storage
When floor space is limited, look up! Tall furniture pieces and vertical storage solutions draw the eye upward, making the ceiling feel higher and the room feel more expansive. Tall bookshelves, vertical racks, or wall-mounted storage units can free up valuable floor space while maximizing vertical real estate. Plus, shelves and cabinets that reach to the ceiling allow you to store more, keeping clutter out of sight.
4. Choose Furniture with a Light Frame
Heavy, bulky furniture can make a small room feel even smaller. Instead, opt for pieces with a light frame or open design. For example, choose sofas with slim legs, glass coffee tables, or transparent acrylic chairs. These lighter, airier pieces give the illusion of more space because they allow more of the floor to show through, making the room feel less cluttered and more open.
5. Create Zones with Rugs and Lighting
In small spaces, it’s important to define different functional areas, like a sleeping zone, a work area, or a lounging space. You can create these "zones" without walls by using rugs to anchor each area and separate them visually. Layering different rugs also adds texture and depth. Lighting plays a key role in this as well—use different light sources like pendant lights, table lamps, and sconces to draw attention to specific areas, making the space feel multi-dimensional.

6. Keep Window Treatments Simple
When it comes to small spaces, less is more with window treatments. Opt for simple, light-colored curtains or shades that allow as much natural light in as possible. Avoid heavy, dark drapes that can make the room feel boxed in. If you prefer privacy, go for sheer curtains or blinds that still let light filter through. The more natural light you allow into the room, the larger and airier it will feel.
7. Use Multi-Functional Furniture
In a small space, furniture that does double duty is a game changer. Invest in pieces that serve more than one purpose—like a sofa bed, an ottoman with hidden storage, or a dining table that doubles as a desk. Multi-functional furniture reduces clutter and maximizes your space without compromising on style or comfort. Look for items that are stylish and practical, offering solutions that fit your lifestyle.
Conclusion
Designing a small space doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style or comfort. With a few smart design tricks—like using light colors, mirrors, and multi-functional furniture—you can create a room that feels open, airy, and expansive. By making the most of your available space and drawing attention to vertical height and natural light, you’ll transform even the tiniest room into a place that feels spacious and inviting.

Design Tips for a Luxurious Kitchen on a Budget
Designing a luxurious kitchen often brings to mind sleek finishes, high-end appliances, and extravagant decor—all with a price tag to match. But a kitchen that feels both upscale and functional doesn’t need to break the bank. With thoughtful planning and a few strategic updates, you can achieve a stunning, high-end look without overspending. Here are some budget-friendly design tips from WeDezine to bring a touch of luxury into your kitchen.
1. Choose the Right Color Palette
Opting for neutral colors like white, gray, or beige can instantly elevate the aesthetic of your kitchen. These shades exude sophistication and make your kitchen look more spacious and inviting. A well-balanced color palette with a few bold accents (like deep blues, greens, or even black) can add drama without overwhelming the space.
2. Invest in High-Impact Lighting
Lighting plays a huge role in defining the mood of your kitchen. Swap out basic ceiling lights for statement lighting fixtures like pendant lights, chandeliers, or even vintage-inspired sconces. Warm LED bulbs give a cozy ambiance, while under-cabinet lighting can make a small kitchen feel both spacious and functional. Remember, the right lighting can turn even a modest kitchen into a luxury showpiece.
3. Upgrade Cabinet Hardware and Faucets
Replacing standard knobs and handles with unique, high-quality hardware is a simple and affordable way to add luxury. Look for brass, matte black, or polished chrome finishes to give your kitchen a refined edge. Similarly, updating the faucet with a sleek, modern design can make your sink area a focal point.
4. Use Open Shelving to Display Stylish Items
Open shelving can make your kitchen look airy and elegant when styled thoughtfully. Use open shelves to display beautiful dishware, glass jars, or plants. Not only does this add personality to your kitchen, but it also keeps costs down compared to installing full cabinetry. You can mix high-end decor pieces with budget finds for an eye-catching display.
5. Incorporate Marble or Marble-Look Finishes
Marble is synonymous with luxury, but genuine marble can be expensive. Marble-look finishes, however, are a cost-effective way to add a touch of opulence. Consider using marble-effect laminate or quartz for countertops, or marble-inspired backsplash tiles. This trick delivers a luxurious aesthetic without the premium cost.
6. Add a Stylish Backsplash
A backsplash can instantly uplift the look of your kitchen. For a luxurious look, consider using materials like subway tiles, mosaic tiles, or even peel-and-stick options that mimic stone or ceramic. Subway tiles in a herringbone pattern or in a bold color can bring a custom, high-end look.
7. Embrace Wood Accents for Warmth
Wood accents add warmth and richness to any kitchen space. Consider introducing natural wood elements in small doses, such as wooden bar stools, floating shelves, or a wooden cutting board. Reclaimed wood, in particular, gives a rustic yet chic feel and pairs beautifully with a variety of colors and textures.
8. Install Faux Crown Molding or Baseboards
Adding crown molding or baseboards to your cabinets is an affordable way to give them a custom-built look. You can install these trims on the top or bottom of cabinets to add an architectural detail that feels upscale. With some DIY effort, this minor touch can elevate the entire room's aesthetic.
9. Accessorize with Metallic Accents
Metallics can create an impression of luxury when used thoughtfully. Try adding brass or gold accents, like a decorative bowl, metallic vases, or gilded picture frames. Just a few metallic touches can instantly brighten the space, lending it a luxurious, curated feel.
10. Include Small Greenery or Fresh Flowers
Fresh herbs, indoor plants, or even a vase of flowers add life to the kitchen and are an affordable way to enhance its appearance. A simple pot of basil or rosemary can also double as a cooking resource! Plants in ceramic pots or glass vases are low-cost additions that bring a refreshing, natural element to any kitchen.
11. Go for Quality Textiles
High-quality kitchen towels, a beautiful runner, or even a small mat near the sink area can all contribute to a more luxurious feel. Look for textiles in soft neutrals, or with subtle patterns, for a touch of understated elegance. These small, functional additions can tie the whole space together.
12. Install a Mirror or Reflective Surface
Mirrors make spaces feel larger and brighter, reflecting light around the room. Adding a small mirror or reflective backsplash can bring a sense of openness to a compact kitchen. Reflective surfaces add sophistication, especially when paired with modern, clean lines.

Designing a luxurious kitchen on a budget requires creativity and strategic choices. By focusing on these affordable updates and personal touches, you can create a kitchen that exudes style, comfort, and elegance.
