I’ve had this little story bouncing around in my head for months now, and finally put together an outline. Feedback sincerely appreciated, as I haven’t written in years, and never for TGM.

“UNCLE BERTIE!“ an excited child’s exclamation rings out in the relative quiet of a weekday afternoon bar crowd.

Lt. Floyd turns around expectantly in the direction of the voice and smiles. He would worry about the implications of everyone calling him ‘Bertie’ later. A small girl, who couldn’t possibly have reached double digits in age, has broken away from her guardian and is now running toward Bob’s group of colleagues. 

“Row, Row, Row Your Boat!” 

Instead of crouching down to meet the girl in a hug, the pair immediately engages in an elaborate secret handshake that matches their silly nicknames. 

“Wow, you two are better than ‘The Parent Trap’!” laughs Natasha, as the rest of their crowd applauds, mostly for the child’s benefit, but also for the obvious joy brought to their friend.

The Daggers were in need of some joy. Though only recently formed, the group had been to hell and back on a nearly impossible mission. Their reward for all making it back in one piece had been some time off around the holidays, which is exactly what brought these foreign guests to The Hard Deck. 

Bob blushes, standing back up to his full height, and clears his throat as he comes to terms with having momentarily been the center of attention. “My niece” he explains, gesturing to the girl. “Rowan”

Luckily, another voice joins them and he is spared having to speak further. “And his dreaded sister in law” says the woman from whom Rowan had just broken free in her excitement, with a curtsy and a joking smile. Rebekah never struggled with speaking up in a crowd the way Bob did. She had the charisma and confidence of someone who’d been on a Broadway stage, because, well, she had. 

Polite introductions begin back and forth, but Bradley’s eyes stay fixed on the new woman and his mind wanders.

“Natasha”

Hand shake.

“Rebekah”

She’s beautiful. That smile.

“Callie”

“Bradley?” she confirms, with a smirk, as they lock eyes.

“I’m Rebekah. Bob’s sister in law. Nice to meet you.”

Holy shit. In their moment of close proximity, a whiff of her perfume acts like a key, unlocking Bradley’s memories from New York Fleet Week. It was earlier this year, but it seems like another lifetime. Before Maverick’s return, before Iceman’s death, before the uranium mission. She was there.

As Bradley was sorting this all out in his head, the group has scattered a bit. Bob is taking his family’s luggage to his car. Halo and Fanboy have started a game of pool. Phoenix has helped Rowan onto a bar stool, her light up sneakers dangling, reaching not even halfway to the floor. She is anxiously awaiting a Shirley Temple with seven cherries pleaseandthankyou. Bradley guesses that must be her age. He is further shaken from his thoughts when he hears Rebekah’s voice again. 

“Where’s the restroom?”

“I’ll show you.” Bradley and Nat say at the same time. 

Nat gives him a crooked look, silently questioning why he would show someone to the women’s bathroom. 

But Rebekah smiles. She must have recognized him too. Could this be a ploy to get them alone to talk? 

“I mean, I’m heading that way anyway.” Bradley adds, attempting nonchalance. 

“Do you mind terribly sitting with her until Bob returns?” Rebekah asks of Nat before they venture off. 

“Not at all” Silent girl code thanks are exchanged via simple glances. 

Bradley does lead them down the hallway near the restrooms, but instead pokes his head in an empty storage room and pulls her in, locking the door behind them. Her back is against the wall and he is dangerously close. 

“Mrs. Robinson” he rasps softly, not quite a whisper. 

She was too old for him, she had initially claimed. When they first met, in a crowded bar, flooded by a sea of uniforms, Bradley was flirting in earnest, but she was treating him like an amusing puppy. Surely he could find a more suitable shore leave match than a recent divorcee like her. Ooh maybe an unassuming grad student! she suggested Or a Rockette; they’re leggy. And flexible! Bradley remained undeterred by the couple years she had on him; he honestly wouldn’t have guessed without her saying so. Eventually, he decided if he couldn’t beat ‘em, he’d playfully join in the age bashing. And so, whenever there was a lull in conversation, or when his mouth was close to her ear as they danced, he would hum the Simon & Garfunkel tune. In the end, it worked in his favor, as the only thing that shut him up was a kiss.

It only took one day before wedding plans were put into motion. You had been shown a guest room, a surprisingly lavish room with a large, plush bed and your own private bathroom. Oikawa’s own personal quarters were right across from yours, and he had promised to see you as much as possible. Kageyama had become his right hand man again, with his privileges of seeing you revoked.

Two maids were assigned to help you daily. They were meek and pale, always silent as they helped you bathe and get dressed your first morning. Their hands lingered on your lower back, guiding you from your room down to the dining hall. Oikawa sat at the head of the table, the same obsidian crown on his head but lacking the cape. Kageyama sat to his right, eyes flicking to you briefly before returning to his meal.

“My bride-to-be, you look wonderful,” Oikawa greeted you brightly.

“Thank you, Your Majesty,” you replied, sitting stiffly in the chair to his left.

“My royal advisors will be helping you plan our wedding,” he said. “They will be meeting with you shortly after we finish breakfast.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

He smiled, shaking open his napkin and placing it on his napkin.

“We will be married in two months. You will be my bride, and we will produce strong heirs to rule over our kingdoms.”

Kageyama’s hand tightened around his fork before it exploded into many pieces.

“Now, now, Kageyama,” Oikawa warned. “Remember who you report to now.”

He was silent, producing another fork with his magic before picking at his food. You watched him sadly, wishing so badly you could reach out to hold his hand in comfort. Instead you ate in silence, letting Oikawa run his mouth as you responded blankly. Once you were all finished with your meals, the two maids from before appeared and led you towards a large stone staircase. At the top of the landing, a large pair of double doors were open, revealing what appeared to be a study. A single man was standing, with two soldiers flanking behind him.

“Oh, Princess.”

The man sunk into a bow, gently reaching for your hand to press a soft kiss to the back of it. He stood, a good height but not intimidating or towering over you. His dark hair was spiky, a style that was different and unusual from what you had seen around your kingdom. A pair of dark brown eyes studied you, slightly annoyed, despite the rest of his face being blank. He wore a navy blue tunic tucked into brown pants, with a pair of dark boots to finish the look.

“You may call me Lord Iwaizumi. I will be your advisor while you are here.”

“A pleasure, Lord Iwaizumi,” you responded, giving him a polite curtsey.

“Come, have a seat. Let us discuss the semantics about the wedding.”

He gestured towards a pair of chairs, and you slowly made your way over and sat down.

"Now, let us start with the date. King Oikawa would like you both to be married in two months.”

Your first week in Kitagawa was spent planning the wedding. After your first meeting with Lord Iwaizumi, Oikawa had invited you to a private lunch in his quarters. You were nervous, unsure of what he was going to do. Instead, he had simply had lunch with you, presenting you with a ring to serve as a sign of your engagement.

The ring was gorgeous, there was no denying it. It was a blood red ruby, surrounded by a halo of diamonds that sparkled in the firelight in his quarters. The band was made of rose gold to match the color scheme. He slid the ring onto your finger effortlessly, grinning as he held your hand out for you to admire it.

“Beautiful, isn’t it? Just like you, my bride.”

Iwaizumi had also begun making a guest list with you, ultimately deciding who from your kingdom you could invite. In the end, only your parents were allowed to attend. He had asked for the other heads of the kingdoms you were friendly with in an effort to build their relationships with Kitagawa.

“You will be our bridge to make us strong,” he had smirked.

You hadn’t taken him for a wedding man, but he had asked you for a theme.

“A theme?” you had frowned.

“But of course. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but Kitagawa is rather . . . dreary.”

“I hadn’t noticed,” you muttered.

He laughed, shaking his head as he leaned back in his chair.

“Well, what is the theme for your dream wedding?”

Your mind flickered to an image of a spring wedding, with a fresh breeze flowing in smelling of flowers. Standing at the altar was Kageyama, smiling affectionately at you as you walked slowly down a plush carpet, your father at your side.

“Spring,” you blurted out.

“Well spring it is,” Iwaizumi scribbled down.

The first month eventually came to an end. Although you considered yourself a prisoner, Oikawa surprisingly gave you a lot of freedom to wander about the castle. A soldier would accompany you, silently trailing behind you as you spent hours in the library or wandering the gardens. Despite your endless wandering, you had yet to see any sign of Kageyama.

“It’s been exactly one month, Princess.”

Oikawa was standing in your doorway, arms crossed as he grinned at you.

You were sitting in front of the fireplace, reading a book on Kitagawa flora when he knocked on your door. Fighting a grimace, you instead gave him a polite smile.

“Thank you for allowing me to go into the library. I am thoroughly enjoying the books I have been reading.”

“But of course. You will need to be comfortable for our life together.”

He bowed then, wishing you a good night before closing the door behind him. Sighing, you closed the book, gaze falling on the fire as you pondered your thoughts. Was this really what the rest of your life was going to look like? Was Oikawa going to be your husband?

Shivering, you stood and got closer to the fire in search of warmth. You put your hands out, closing your eyes as you relished in the heat.

“Princess.”

You jumped, whirling around as a scream got caught in your throat. Your heart began to thump wildly at the sight before you.

“K-Kageyama?!”

Before he could respond you threw yourself into his arms. He welcomed you with a tight hug, his scent making you emotional and nostalgic. You pulled back, eyes going wide with panic as you realized Oikawa might catch him.

“But won’t Oikawa -”

He shook his head.

“No, I’ve been practicing my magic in secret. I left a copy of myself in my room, but he won’t be able to recognize that it’s a copy.”

He gently sat down in the armchair, pulling you onto his lap. One hand came to rest on your lower back, holding you steady. Heat coursed through you at the close contact, and you had to fight the urge to kiss him.

“I’m sorry. Oikawa has been working hard to keep me away from you.”

“It’s okay,” you gave him a sad smile. “I’m just glad to see you.”

He studied your face, as if he was searching for some unspoken answer.

“I’m sorry. I haven’t been able to do much to help you.”

Before you could stop yourself you kissed him, wrapping your arms around his neck. He froze for a second before responding, his lips moving softly against yours.

“I’ve missed you.”

You straddled his lap, running your fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. A light flush settled on his cheeks, blue eyes slightly wide as he stared up at you.

“I wish I was marrying you instead, Kageyama.”

You kissed him again, but much more urgent this time. His hands moved to settle on your hips, gripping you tightly. He yanked you back, panting lightly as he tried to form the right words.

“We shouldn’t. Oikawa will -”

“Oikawa can kiss my butt,” you snapped.

He blinked rapidly before laughing, shaking his head as he rested it against your chest.

“Well, if you insist . . .”

His mouth was hot against yours, his tongue gently prodding your mouth to fully taste you. After a few moments he pulled away to kiss your neck, nibbling and licking the marks he left behind. His hands moved from your waist to the top of your nightgown, swiftly untying it before pushing you off of him. The nightgown fell slowly to the floor, leaving you in your undergarments.

“You are absolutely beautiful,” he whispered.

Your eyes flickered nervously towards the door. Although Oikawa had bid you good night, you were still worried that he would walk in unannounced to check on you. Kageyama gently placed a hand under your chin, turning your face to look at him.

“No one is going to come. I have a barrier cast over you.”

He kissed you again, his big hands engulfing your face as he deepened the kiss. He stood abruptly, causing you to wrap your legs around his waist. It didn’t take long for you to realize he was walking over to your bed in the adjoining room, where he plopped you gently onto the mattress.

“I do not care that you are betrothed to someone else,” he whispered. “I want you.”

“Will Oikawa know?” you whispered back, panic rising in your chest.

“I am doing everything I can to stop this wedding. Do not worry, my Princess.”

You glanced up at his face, studying it in the soft light. There was a fireplace in this room as well, and Kageyama lit it with a simple flick of his hand. You took a moment to study his face, observing the way his long eyelashes framed his cheeks, memorizing the sharp lines of his jaw and the blue shade of his eyes. One of your hands reached up shakily, cupping his cheek. He leaned into your touch, eyes fluttering shut as he relished in the warmth. You smiled softly, your heart swelling at the realization that Kageyama was here with you again.

He sat back on his knees, tugging his tunic over his head before working on his pants. You swallowed nervously, his underwear displaying his arousal as he clumsily shrugged out of his clothes.
