There are probably 1,001 uses for wooden shipping pallets besides sticking them in a burn barrel. We can regularly source them for free or for very low cost by talking to distribution centers and contractor supply stores about their breakage piles, eyeballing the dumpster areas of shopping centers and warehouses, or checking sites like Craigslist and Freecycle.

Spin around online and you can find all sorts of projects and builds for people of all skill levels. They can make our lives easier and seriously cut our costs in many cases. A free item with that much potential makes them an automatic must-have in my book. I’m mostly going to talk about simple builds this time around, but pallets also get turned into pretty impressive structures, gardens, and furniture.

Pallets come in several standard sizes and a handful of configurations. While the type can matter for some of our projects due to the number, cut, and spacing of boards, for the most part applications are pretty universal. Disassembled = Board Lumber

Remember, once disassembled, our pallets are just lumber. That opens up the whole world of projects. Rifle racks for the range or safes, food storage shelves, bird houses and playhouses; anything we’d repair or build can be done with pallets.

Those boards also have use in hiding some of the “ugly” around our homes. We can use them to sheath everything from our water storage totes and barrels, to whatever containers we’re planting in.

We can also double up our pallet boards for a little more durability and strength if we want. I mention this because some stuff is heavy and would do better with a 2×4 than 1×4. (I tend to live in the “abundance of caution” and JIC world for the most part, although I’ll dispel that and make heads spin in the next section.)

Safe or Unsafe

How “safe” the various treatments used on pallets is for us depends on our intended use, even if we’re worried about chemicals. Most articles and videos will tell you that only HT-Heat treated pallets are safe, although others include debarked (DB) and the “safe” EPAL European designator. I’m not going to hand my kids lead pacifiers or mix up powdered milk or pony drenches in bleach bottles, but I also don’t get too wrapped around the axle on some fronts. This is one of them.

If you consume Big Ag meats (supermarket to Outback or Whataburger), farmed or bottom-feeder fish, “normal” supermarket eggs and dairy, soda or anything in the center aisles made with corn or soy, or if you drive 3 hours/week, burn trash, touch cash and then your face/food, smoke (anything), handle lead (ammo), sit by campfires, live in a city, microwave food in plastic, use rain catchment without serious decontamination filters, have dark irrigation hoses or foam mattresses, or buy commercial animal feed … don’t sweat those markers too much.

One, you’re more likely to die from a vehicular accident, and be hospitalized from supermarket leafy greens or infection contracted in the hospital than from one more of the ubiquitous chemicals around us. Two, those chemicals mostly only become available as our pallets (or anything) decays. That means tiny increments released over time (vice chugging a can of stain). Chemicals mostly head downward with moisture, with only some outward contact spreading outward – only fractions of them are available for possible uptake. Only fractions of that then ends up in the seeds and fruits we eat.

All that said, the warnings about chem-treated pallets originate from garden methods using them, then became universal “rules”. (Pallet garden potentials are so numerous, I’m not even going to talk about them here – they rate an entire article.)

Point is, don’t blanketly accept conventional wisdoms without thinking them through. They may not even apply (or are total bunk). Some stuff, for some/many people, is worth stressing. Some stuff isn’t.

Water Storage

Speaking of safe and unsafe, the conventional wisdom is that we don’t want to store plastic containers, particularly of water, on concrete due to the chemical interaction that allows contaminants to enter our foods. There’s some hot-not and storage-duration wiggle room, and while I tend to err on the side of caution in this case (and when it comes to previous milk containers), there’s some myth-truth proposals here http://www.preparednesspro.com/myths-and-facts-of-water-storage to spur analytical thinking.

For the most part, I don’t really see how laying cardboard, 2×4’s, or 1×4’s under plastic barrels and buckets destabilizes them unless somebody gets really cute (or stingy). Personally, I’m a big believer in keeping stuff up off the floor, period. Even beyond chemical interaction concerns, being able to stack stuff also comes in handy, both to maximize storage space and in some cases to make it easier to use.

One point to note about water in particular is that it’s heavy. Not only does that apply to any rack we use, it also applies to container sizes. The older I get and more injuries I accumulate and heal, the more I’m willing to downsize. That includes containers for dry goods and water.

It’s just easier to build structures for, pull down, move, clean, and refill a 3-6 gallon bucket than a 35-55 gallon barrel. About the only remaining exceptions in my various storage are wheeled trash cans.

*Those are not food safe, either, if it’s a concern – told you I’d make heads spin. (Most of my trash cans hold mylar-bagged foods and animal evac feed and supplies; some are wash/laundry water catchment).

As-Is Uses

There’s lots pallets can do for us even if we’re not yet DIY-ers, and lots that requires minimal building skills. For one, just getting stuff off the ground, as mentioned above. That can be hay, mulch, bagged amendments, toolboxes in our sheds or outdoors, food storage buckets and barrels, or creating elevated resting platforms and feeding stations in pens or pastures that tend to get muddy.

They can help keep our boots cleaner – and to some degree limit the risk of slipping in wet and icy weather – by creating walkways, and prevent ATVs, Gators, carts, and bikes from bogging down or tearing ruts on trails and in gardens. They can also decrease or eliminate risks and wetness from ditches and seasonal streams, making getting around faster and easier.

Steps & Rails

If we’re on a tight budget, we might find we can use a boost as well as a stepping stone. We might also decide that a step or hill is a little too much for us as we age, get pregnant, or face injury. Pallets can help us there, too, and it tends to be a ridiculously easy build.

Go easy on how high we go with these things – I’ve seen some crazy. They are wood and even treated, they are eventually going to rot and crack, and need replaced. Also, make sure you anchor these things together and to the ground.

If you want or need steps or a sidewalk past mud, a hand rail is usually a fantastic idea, even if it’s just posts somebody can snag. We can turn other pallets into those rails to increase safety and ease.

Simple Builds

There are plenty of other simple builds out there that at most require splitting, hanging, or trimming an as-is pallet to size, adding some screws or in some cases a hinge, a few hooks, and some cord or chain. The ease makes pallets a valuable learning tool (and confidence boost) for preppers who are just dipping their toe into DIY. The in-expense also means if there’s a screw-up, no big. Scrap lumber is handy to have around.

Some of the simplest ways to use pallets is just to slap three or four of them together to make a work bench, desk, countertop, or table. Flip that on its side, link a few in series, and you’ve got a leaf mold or compost heap. With a sturdy wall or a couple of convenient trees and $3-10 in hardware, and you can make one or two pallets into a permanent or Murphy-bed style station that functions as a desk, a table, or a workbench, indoors or out.

With some additional screws and hooks or disassembled boards, we can use a wall or those handy trees to hang our tools in a shed or outside the garage. We can also hang them from the sides of our tables or benches.

For a really simple build, just fix a handful of shipping pallets together with deck screws (flip-flop which side is up as you stack to increase shelf depth). Add caster wheels and it’s a rolling storage shelf or workbench.

With some cinder blocks or some 4x4s, we can create shelving with very little building experience, using whole pallets, pallets that are cut in half to make shallower widths, or disassembled boards. (Remember: even a pint canning jar is heavy on its own and holds another pound worth of liquids or foods – use healthy boards and consider doubling them up.)

Another super-simple build using just deck screws is stacking a few pallets and adding one perpendicular to form an L shape. Set that on some cinder blocks and top with a mattress, seat cushions, or pads and you’ve got a bench seat or day bed. Some additional lumber or blocks creates storage spaces for totes, baskets, or drawers salvaged from a wrecked dresser or filing cabinet.

If you’re after some inexpensive yard, starter-home, or bug-out location furniture, the sky is the limit and the internet is just full of ideas. Personally, I’m not much for the rustic pallet look, but with a coat of paint or whitewash, our pallets can get prettier if and where it matters.

Fencing & Pens

Another fantastic use for pallets that requires little DIY experience is fencing for our dooryards, gardens, and animals, to protect trees, or just to increase our privacy a little. We can use them pretty much as-is and connect them to each other, standard fenceposts, or poles we make our or a neighbor’s overgrown saplings and trimmings. We can also pull a board or two from each to cut at an angle and drive into the ground for stability or to use as an overlapping connector between pallets.

If heights of 18-24” work instead of 3-4’, we can very quickly halve our pallets and double the area we enclose. We can also totally or partly disassemble them and churn out top-rail or a 2-3 rail plank fencing, or do some extra cutting for an HOA-acceptable picket fence.

If we have problems with raccoons reaching through our poultry and rabbit fencing, we can brace whole or half-height pallets against our existing runs to add depth. Likewise, they can create a buffer to allow some grazing but keep chickens and goats from eating something to the trunk or roots.

We can also take pallets apart and reassemble them in a solid wall if our birds/hares like to do dumb stuff like huddle in a corner where something can get its claws through – there’s little worse than a disassembled critter the predator couldn’t even get out to eat.

I said I wasn’t going to talk about pallet gardens, but when it comes to fencing, that’s actually one of the benefits they offer. Pallet fences allow us to grow vertically either on the protected inside or on the outside of critter pens where our critters can’t reach, or both.

Pallets for Preppers

Pallets can be an excellent step into the world of DIY for beginners, as well as help everybody save money. Gardens, livestock feeders, and sheds are big enough categories to really rate their own articles, but there’s so much more. If you’ve got a need, see if somebody has a how-to using pallets, but don’t forget that pallets are also just board lumber waiting to be sanded.

Alex Covington’s Rampage 1970 Chevrolet Camaro is bad and bold—check it out!

6Through the years, the second-generation Chevrolet Camaro has often been overlooked as a performer mainly due to the popularity of the first-gen Camaro. But when your business is building showstopping, track-stomping machines like the folks at Roadster Shop, the desire to be different pushes you to conjure up an insane, one-of-a-kind Camaro—and then take the brash step of naming it Rampage. A fitting name for a car designed to cause destruction among the competition. “I always thought that the second-generation Camaro had a little bit more of an exotic look to it, more so than an American muscle look. We happened to have a great customer who shared the vision, so we twisted his arm a little,” recalled Roadster Shop co-owner Jeremy Gerber.

Their in-house designer, Chris Gray, put the rendering together and the company presented it to car owner Alex Covington, who then made the decision to get the project underway. The Camaro, which was plucked from the desert, was super clean and straight, although covered in patina from sitting. It wore all original sheetmetal right down to the floors—a real rarity in this day and age—but was ripe for blasting to clean up the surfaces.

Once the car was back in the shop and ready to be worked out, they braced the shell and cut the floors completely out to make room for the Roadster Shop chassis underneath. Roadster Shop’s Fast Track full chassis is loaded up with all of the custom options they offer to underpin this beast. In addition, the chassis has been configured to fit the widebody perfectly.

By using fully boxed, hand-fabricated framerails; a new floor; custom center crossmember; and other tricks they’ve developed a suspension system that is immensely stiff to reduce unibody twist yet still uses the factory body mounts and bumper brackets. Each chassis is built to house the customer’s specific engine and transmission selection. In this configuration, the chassis makes use of a rollcage designed to be tight to the body. This was achieved by lifting the body off the chassis during the construction process to ensure it was as snug as possible.

Although the second-gen Camaro chassis’ capabilities were improved over the first-gen’s in factory form, the Roadster Shop team felt they could improve it even more by configuring each piece of the suspension to their liking using a mixture of custom parts, existing products, and proven C6 Corvette spindles and hubs to modernize the chassis’ handling prowess.

“The neat thing about it is that it’s really just an overgrown version of all of our factory production suspension. It may look like a race car, it acts like a race car, it works like a race car, but it still has the same bushings, same control arms, and the same components we use on our production chassis … just set up a bit wider. But this is a hard-core track day car,” says Gerber.

The track width of this chassis has been increased by approximately 2.5 inches on each side; making Rampage approximately 80.5 inches wide at the outside edges of the Falken Azenis RT615K 315/30/18 tires used during the 2016 Falken Tire Super Chevy Muscle Car Challenge. The 5 inches of additional track width engineered into this car is for one reason and one reason only—to maximize grip no matter where the car is raced. Custom control arms were built to tie everything together in the front suspension.

Up front, Penske shocks custom-built for Roadster Shop, utilize Hyperco 600 lb-in springs and work in conjunction with a Speedway 1.25-inch front sway bar, Delrin bushings, and the aforementioned custom control arms. In addition, Roadster Shop custom-designed and machined a trunnion bearing mount rocker arm to work with the front shocks. Alignment settings are simpler than you might expect: 1.75-degrees of negative camber, 6.5-degrees of caster, and 1/16-inch of toe out keep the massive front tires planted.

In the rear, the rollcage and Fast Track chassis support another pair of custom-valved Penske shocks; these wrapped with 800 lb-in Hyperco springs to keep the tires planted over surface undulations. Another Speedway sway bar is in place, with chromoly control arms locating the C&R Racing 9-inch Ford third member, loaded with 3.50 gears and a Wavetrac limited-slip differential. The independent rear suspension uses C6 Corvette knuckles, as the RS team didn’t feel the need to reinvent the wheel when it came to the suspension geometry provided by the spindles. Power to the rearend is delivered via a Driveshaft Shop carbon-fiber driveshaft and sent to the wheels through Driveshaft Shop 300M halfshafts.

With all this grip on tap, surely there must be a monster supercharged or turbocharged powerplant onboard, right? Not so in this instance. The horses are generated by a pump gas, naturally aspirated, 750hp 427ci LS7 built by Thompson Racing Engines and Lingenfelter, which was set back 5 inches to improve weight bias. A cross-ram Hurricane intake from Australian firm Harrop makes use of individual throttle bodies and a pair of plenums to help build usable power throughout the rpm range. Engine management is handled by a MoTeC M880. And when was the last time you saw a pair of 2-inch stainless-steel 180-degree headers wrapped around an LS engine’s oil pan? Right here on Rampage. To route the horsepower from engine to tires, the Jerico transmission uses a 7.250-inch-diameter multi-disc Tilton clutch inside the Tilton bellhousing. The race-inspired Camaro is also fitted with a quartet of air-jacks. Yep, that’s right, just like the big boys.

The Roadster Shop fab team made the decision to build molds in-house for the carbon-fiber wheel flares, and a carbon-fiber Rally Sport front clip from Anvil was set into place. By creating the molds in-house, if there are any on-track issues where damage occurs, they can pop another flare out much more quickly than if one had to be re-created out of metal.

Gerber shared a fun story with us. Apparently, on its first testdrive, Rampage was equipped with Hoosier slicks, the straight-cut gearbox, and the nearly open exhaust. “With the small, lightweight clutch and fresh, cold slicks it is virtually impossible to start the car without spinning the tires,” says Gerber. “At the first stoplight there happens to be a cop sitting directly across from me. I hung a right like a NASCAR leaving the pits and ended up at the next light lined up next to a guy in a red C7 Corvette convertible. I think that guy’s pride and mind will forever be blown.”

What Makes It Handle Drivetrain: 427 LS7 by Thompson Racing Engines and Lingenfelter, Jerico road-race dog-box transmission with Tilton 7.25-inch multi-disc clutch. Rearend is a C&R Racing 9-inch third member with 3.50 gears and a Wavetrac differential, carbon-fiber driveshaft and 300M halfshafts from Driveshaft Shop. Driven by professional hot shoe Mike Skeen, who also pulled double-duty with the company’s other entry at the Challenge, Rampage simply demolished the benchmark fifth-gen Camaro’s numbers in all aspects. ADA Guidelines

A set of requirements applied to the design and construction of all buildings to ensure individuals with disabilities have full access to the building and its facilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

Antiquing

The process of making wood or fabric look old and used. This can be done through a finish, artificial weathering, or distressing.

Apron

Boards that are placed at right angles to the underside of a tabletop or seat of a chair, extending between the tops of legs. On case goods furniture, it is the perpendicular face below the lowest drawer between bracket feet.

Arabesque

A kind of scroll pattern in which leaves, flowers, fruit and geometric forms are intertwined

Armoire

French term for a wardrobe frequently used to describe a French-style wardrobe.

Art Deco

Style of architecture and furnishings popular in the 1920's and 1930's; characteristics include streamlined, geometric motifs expressed in materials such as glass, plastic and chrome.

Art Nouveau

Forerunner of Art Deco; style of decoration between 1890 and 1910 characterized by flowing lines, sinuous curves and forms derived from nature.

Banquette

A long bench-like seat, often upholstered and generally built into or along a wall.

Bentwood chair

A chair popularized in Paris café culture made from wood bent using a steaming process.

Bergère

An upholstered French armchair with outwardly rolling arms and sections of its wooden frame exposed.

Bolster

A long, often cylindrical, cushion or pillow for a bed, sofa, etc.

Bookcase Headboard

A headboard for a bed that has space to store books, radios, clocks, and other small items. Sometimes called a storage headboard.

Bow front

Outwardly bowing front of an item of wooden furniture.

Box Match

A veneering pattern similar to diamond match and angled to create a series of consecutive squares radiating out from the center.

Brace Block

A piece of wood or metal, fitted into an angle of a piece of furniture to add strength or rigidity.

Bracket foot

A foot resembling an “L” on its side placed at the corners of cabinet furniture.

Breakfront

An item of furniture divided vertically into three sections, with the center section projecting forward.

Brocade

Used in fine, formal upholstery, it has raised surface patterns resembling embroidery.

Broken pediment

A decorative feature placed at the top of an item of furniture, which resembles a camel's hump. The center section of the hump is removed (hence the term “broken”) to make room for additional ornamental features.

Buffet

A buffet/sideboard without a hutch or storage cabinet on top. The French definition of the word is "a small sideboard; a place to keep dishes.”

Bun Foot

A foot shaped as a slightly flattened round ball typically used on chests of drawers or upholstered chairs.

Bureau

A desk built on top of a chest of drawers. The desk is revealed when a flap or “fall” is lowered. Occasionally a bookcase sits on top of it.

Cabriole leg

A table or chair leg with a gentle "S" shape which curves outward at the top and then curves inward while tapering gradually. Named after an early French term for "goat" (literally "goat's leg") it is common on Queen Anne and Chippendale style furniture. Occasionally referred to as a Queen Anne leg.

Camel back

Used to describe furniture with a curve like a camel's hump along its back.

Casters

Small wheels mounted on a swivel frame and then attached to a base or legs to facilitate moving a piece of furniture.

Canterbury

A portable magazine rack.

Chairback Headboard

This is an open headboard style resembling the back of a dining room chair.

Chaise Lounge

An upholstered settee with an arm at one end and a back that tapers down to seating level.

Chenille

Fabric with thick needle-punched design; often used on bedspreads and robes as well as casual upholstery.

Chest on chest

A large chest of drawers on which sits a slightly smaller chest of drawers.

Chippendale

Name applied to Thomas Chippendale’s eighteenth-century furniture designs, including the camelback sofa and the wing chair.

Classic

Refers to design based in the artistic standards, principles and methods of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Coffee Table

A long, low table used in front of a sofa. Also called a cocktail table.

Coffer

A storage chest having a hinged lid.

Complementary colors

Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel (i.e. blue and orange).

Corner Block

Triangular wood block used in the concealed structure under tabletops, inside cases, and at points of stress on upholstered furniture frames.

Cornice

Decorative section of wood that runs along the top of cabinet furniture and leans out at an angle to provide a pleasing finished appearance to the piece.

Counter Height:

A Counter Height Table measures between 34"- 36" Tall. Counter Height Tables are considered more casual, and make it easier to converse with others standing in the room. Counter height stools seating measures between 24"- 28" high.

Credenza

A buffet, sideboard, or bookcase, especially one without legs. A piece of office furniture having a long flat top.

Cyma Curve

A simple double-curved molding with a reversed curve as its profile. Derived from Greek meaning, “wave”.

Damask

Formal fabric with textural contrast between satiny and dull.

Daybed

Similar to a bed but narrower and with a padded seat back at one end for leaning against.

Dinette

Small-scaled dining furniture with a table and four to six chairs designed for kitchen use, but also used in small dining areas.

Drop leaf table

A table with hinged leaves which can be lowered to save space when not in use.

Eclecticism

A style in which furnishings and accessories of various periods and styles are deftly and harmoniously combined.

Embossing

A type of design that is produced on a surface by hammering, stamping, pressing, or molding

Etagere

A free standing open cabinet having several shelves used for display purposes.

Fiddle back

A back splat shaped like a violin, common in Windsor chairs.

Filigree

Ornamental openwork of delicate or intricate design that is usually done in gold or silver wire.

Finial

A small carved or turned ornament used to provide a decorative finish to a tall vertical piece such as a long case clock or bedpost.

Flat packed furniture

Also called KD, flat-pack or self-assembly furniture. Refers to furniture that is to be assembled by the end user.

Fretwork

Interlaced ornamental woodwork, usually in a complicated repeating, geometric pattern. This is often used in backs of chairs, beds, in china cabinet doors, or on table aprons and legs.

Futon

A folded mattress on a frame that can be folded up for seating or down to form a sleeping surface.

Gesso

(Pronounced jesso) A decorative feature created out of plaster commonly used on picture and mirror frames. Frequently finished by gilding or painting.

Homespun

Originally, this was a fabric loomed by hand at home, but now the name of a loose, coarsely woven, power-loomed fabric that uses textured and bulky yarns to create a hand-woven look.

Hutch

A two-part case piece that usually has a two-door cabinet below and open shelves above, originally dating from seventeenth-century England.

Inlay

Veneers of contrasting colors cut into decorative shapes and set into the surface of wood furniture for ornamentation.

Innerspring Mattress

A mattress with a center core of springs for buoyancy and resilience. A protective pad surrounds the springs.

Jacquard

A formal, highly decorative fabric that includes damasks, tapestries, brocades, and all cloths with elaborate figures woven on a jacquard loom.

Knee Hole

A space beneath a desk or dressing table designed to accommodate a person's legs to enable them to sit comfortably when using the top as a work surface.

Lacquer

A durable varnish applied in several layers to protect furniture’s surface. Finishes can vary from matt to glossy.

Ladder Back Chair

A style of country chair with horizontal slats in the back that resemble a ladder.

Laminate or "Lam"

Applied covering to boards, which provide different appearances such as colors and grains (see also paper, vinyl). A synonym for “replicated.”

Lattice

An openwork crisscross or fretwork made of thin, flat strips of wood or metal. Usually found on chairs and headboards.

Lazy Susan

A revolving tray or stand of wood or metal.

Leaf

A board or panel that is used as a tabletop extension. Some leaves are hinged to the table surface and must be raised to a horizontal position, as in a Pampero or gate-leg table. Other leaves are drawn out from beneath the table surface, as in the draw table. In other tables, the top can be separated and extended so leaves can be placed in the opening.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

This is made by breaking down wood chips into fibers, mixing glue, and fusing the resulting mixture under heat and pressure to produce a board.

Mantel

The complete facing around the opening of a fireplace, including any shelf used above it as well as any part that projects from the wall.

Motion Furniture

Chairs, beds, or sofas containing mechanisms that allow the user to recline or extend their legs.

Occasional Furniture

A generic term used to describe small pieces of furniture such as lamp tables, coffee tables or magazine racks.

Ottoman

A long, low upholstered seat with no back: used with a chair as a footrest. If over scaled, can be used in place of a cocktail table.

Parson's Table

A square or rectangular table with wide, straight legs.

Particle Board

Panels that are manufactured by bonding wood particles with synthetic resins under heat and pressure. Used as the core for many plywood panels, as panels to be printed (engraved), or other uses in furniture construction. Also called fiberboard, chip core, hardboard, and medium density fiberboard.

Patina

The coloration and texture, which wood and leather acquire with age and use

Pediment

A decorative crest found at the top of tall pieces of furniture to achieve a pleasing finish.

Pilaster

A flattened column-like detail applied to furniture, bookcases, etc. as a decorative feature.

Platform Bed

A mattress that sets on the top of a wood or plastic platform or pedestal. Sometimes the mattress may recess into a frame on the top of the platform, and there is a shelf that may go partially or completely around the perimeter.

Pouf

A low upholstered stool of solid construction

Roll Top Desk

Desks with a tambour cover which rolls back to reveal the writing surface.

Another word for a sofa.

Shield Back Chair

A chair in the Hepplewhite style having a back in the shape of a shield.

A chair with a small seat (15 to 18 inches wide) and no arms.

Sleigh Bed

A popular French Empire-style bed having a high scrolled headboard and footboard, creating the impression of a sleigh or a boat (also called “lit bateau” or “boat bed”)

Spindle Back

A chair having vertically arranged spindles in the back.

Standard Height:

A Standard Height Table measures between 28"- 30" Tall. Standard Height Tables are more common and therefore available in more sizes, designs and finishes than counter height tables. Standard height chair seating measures between 18"- 20" high.

Tester Bed

A bed having two posts at the headboard supporting a half canopy above.

TOB

An abbreviation for Top of Bed. Ashley TOB sets contain a comforter, pillow shams, and a bed skirt.

Trundle Bed

Pullout bed on casters somewhat smaller than the bed under which it is set.

Tufting

An upholstery technique where the covering fabric and the padding are tied back in a definite pattern, creating small "pillows" between depressions.

Wainscoting

Wood paneling applied to walls from baseboards to the desired height, usually about one-third of the way up a wall.

Windsor Chair

A popular 18th century wooden chair having a solid seat and a back formed from a bent wood hoop and vertical spindles.

The C2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine is a commercial quality rower thats making its way into more and more homes. It is designed to improve upon the success of the best selling Concept 2 Model D. If youre thinking about buying a Model E, youve probably glanced at or are familiar with the Model D. While they share many of the same characteristics and features, there are also some differences worth noting.

Flywheel and Damper

Just like its predecessor the Model D, the Model E uses air resistance to provide the feel of rowing on water. Air resistance is generated by the spinning of the flywheel. The faster you can get the wheel to spin with your strokes, the greater the resistance you will experience.

The damper is a lever positioned on the side of the flywheel cage. The cage is marked with settings 1 through 10 so you can easily adjust the setting. The damper settings control the feel of the stroke, but you are in complete control of the resistance. No matter what setting you use, in order to increase the intensity of your workout, you will have to increase the amount of effort you put in. In other words, pull harder for more resistance.

Performance Monitor and LogCard

The Model E comes standard with the PM4 performance monitor, the most advanced monitor Concept2 makes. The monitor is simple to operate, provides accurate data on your rowing performance, and includes several features that will help you get the most out of your workouts.

The monitor provides real time statistics on your rowing performance including speed, distance rowed, number of calories burned, and more. If youre using a heart rate monitor that interfaces with the PM4, the monitor will display your heart rate data as well.

You can hop on the Model E and row without pressing a button from the start of your workout to the finish. Or you can use the menu system to choose a preset workout program, save your favorite workouts, or review your past performance.

The monitor also comes preloaded with a few games you can play while rowing. The games are fun, challenging, and they break up the monotony of rowing. They also serve as teaching tools. First, wireless racing is supported so up to 8 machines can compete against each other with no additional equipment or computers required. Secondly, wireless heart monitoring is also supported. A Garmin chest belt is included with the Model E if you want to take advantage of this feature.

The PM4 comes with a battery pack that can be recharged. The battery actually recharges while you row or when the monitor is connected to a computer via USB cable. You also have the option of using two D batteries or an AC adapter to power the monitor.

A LogCard for storing your workout preferences and data is included with the Model E. Data can be stored for up to five users so you only need one card even if more than one person uses your machine. Even if you are brand new to indoor rowing, getting started with the Model E is simple. Once you have the machine assembled, you can hop on, strap your feet in, and start rowing.

You will want to take some time at some point to familiarize yourself with all the great features packed into the performance monitor, though. You have the option of recording your stats, playing games while you row, using any of the preset workout programs, and monitoring your heart rate so it pays to learn how to use them.
