Portraits in Majora's Mask 3D

The 3DS remake of Majora's Mask gave the game a major graphical overhaul and added many details to the world of Termina. These include various portraits that give a bit more insight into the backstory of characters in the game, most notably the family running the Stock Pot Inn, the family of Clock Town's Mayor Dotour and the sisters living at Romani Ranch.

Stock Pot Inn Family

The family running the Stock Pot Inn in Clock Town consists of several members: Anju, her unnamed mother and her unnamed grandmother. The grandmother also mentions her son Tortus, who was Anju's father:

Oh, Tortus. Did you finish helping father? Then let mother read you a story.

Meanwhile, she also has a diary that belonged to her husband Gampy. In the original game, Tortus and Gampy remained unseen, but via the newly added portraits, it seems they have received designs. One shows a woman resembling Anju's grandmother in a wedding dress. Another shows the same couple with a baby, presumably Tortus.

We also see a portrait of an elderly man, presumably Gampy in his twilight years before his (implied) passing by the time of the main game.

We also get a shot of the whole family. It is clear that the woman in the wheelchair is Anju's grandmother, now a bit older than in previous pictures. It is harder to determine who the other people are, though below are my best guesses based on the assumption we are seeing all five members of the family here.

Besides this, we also get a picture of a younger mayor Dotour and what is presumably a child-aged Tortus. When talking to Anju's grandmother when wearing Kafei's Mask (Kafei being the son of Dotour), it becomes clear she knew Dotour well in the past as well:

Oh, Dotour... If they pick on you, you come tell teacher, OK?

As a neat aside, Dotour can also be seen holding a Keaton Mask, which is popular among youths in Clock Town. His son Kafei also owns such a mask and wears it during the game.

Finally, the portraits also reveal that Anju's grandmother owned a tiger in her later years. At first it was a small cub, but later on it is shown to have grown into a proper tiger. Her Hyrulean counterpart in Ocarina of Time also owns such a cub, though it appears the tiger in Termina has passed by the main game. Nonetheless, Anju's grandmother still has a tribute to the tiger on the back of her wheelchair.

Romani Ranch

A few paintings can also be found at Romani Ranch, though a few relevant ones can also be found at the Stock Pot Inn. It is namely mentioned that ranch owner Cremia and Anju are friends:

In town...I have a friend. Her name's Anju..

It is also suggested by Cremia's sister Romani that Cremia has a crush on Kafei, who is Anju's fiancée and supposed to marry her soon:

Romani knows... My sister, Cremia, has someone in town she likes... But that person is supposed to get married the day of the carnival. It's hard for my sister... Going into town...

These things are reflected in the portraits. In the Stock Pot Inn, a portrait of Cremia and Romani can be found. Meanwhile, in Cremia and Romani's house, a portrait of what looks to be a younger Anju, Kafei and Cremia can be seen.

A second picture from Cremia and Romani's house seems to show the two of them in front of the Milk Bar that their ranch supplies with Milk, albeit very faintly:

Lastly, the portraits contextualize a rather odd sidequest of Majora's Mask. During the game, strange ghostly aliens attack the ranch and try to steal its cows. The ghosts attack once every year and arrive in a glowing ball of light:

They... They come at night every year when the carnival gets closer. They come riding in a bright, shining ball, and many of them come down...to the barn...

However, the portraits suggest the ghosts may stalk the ranch more often than that. This is because both in the Stock Pot Inn and Cremia and Romani's house, pictures of UFOs can be seen.

This was something I had done where I managed to get a vector of the Receptionist from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask into Kakariko Village from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time appearing as a giantess. I just have had a fascination with this character and often imagine if she would be great as a giantess or seeing her appear alongside a miniaturized version of Link. What do you think the scenario would be?

Aroaceptember day 3: more bestiefest.

I was very reluctant to post about these characters in particular, because romance is involved in a way, but not between them. But I'll try to make a more general post about it (it'll make sense as you read it, trust me, I just like to ramble about this and I don't want to make multiple days about the same game).

I am talking of course, about Cremia and Anju.

It is no secret to everybody that the game strongly implies she has a crush on Kafei (Anju's fiancee), and the wording has some people think that she has feelings for her best friend instead, but once again, I think that just diminishes the value of true friendship two people can have. She introduces Anju as her friend, and shows some concern about her wedding, as she points out that the Moon looks way bigger than before.

There's also rumors among people that say he must have eloped with Cremia instead, rumors that must have caught up to her at some point because she does show some annoyance at being asked about his whereabouts, while it could be because her relationship with Madame Aroma might not be the greatest (the dialogue here kinda has a weird tone to it), it could also be because she might not be very happy about one of her friends being gone like that and making her other friend worry. After all, she does talk to you about Anju, but never about Kafei, she says it's 'her [Anju] wedding', not both her friends' wedding. To me this woman values her friendship with Anju way more than any romantic feelings she might have for her friend's partner, not giving a crap about what others have to say (she is busy going through some bad stuff, after all), and devoting what little time she has left for her sister (it always seemed to me that Cremia seems to be the only character that acknowledges that no matter how far they're from Clock Town, the Moon will destroy all of Termina).

While I'm at it, I would also like to address Kafei for a brief while, he seems too much of a proud man, reluctant to ask for help in his moment of need, and as a result, gets people gossiping about crap that doesn't concern them, not to mention he doesn't even tell his friend, the Curiosity Shop Man, about his problems, he only does at last minute, much to his friend's surprise. Is not that he didn't value the friendship, after all the Curiosity Shop Man mentions that he didn't know Kafei would keep a gift he gave him many years back for so long, and took care of it so well, but I believe he is a lesson in this game that sometimes we have to reach out to our friends in our time of need, and this is evident in the quest itself, the only reason Kafei succeeds is because you, the player, help him out.

Not to mention that sometimes, we might find people out there that appreciate our company or don't mind it to the point they might have a level of understanding no one else can.

Out of all the people that know him, this guy is the only one that understands him better than most, and doesn't judge him. We gotta hold those people close to us.

I wanted to bring up Majora's Mask in general because people seem to think the game is just a dark one, but it is not, is the dark tones that emphasize the real themes of the game: (not necessarily romantic) love and friendship, most of these themes are shown in friends struggling to communicate or understand each other (Kafei and his friends), friends unable to help one another (Cremia and Anju), people who care about their families that would do the utmost for them (Madame Aroma staying back in town, despite is certain demise in the case she can see her son one last time, the Butler's hopeful wait to see his son again, Mutoh and Dotour's mutual concern for their families, Cremia wanting to do nothing but spend time with the only family she has left, Pamela doing her best to protect her father, even though he's become a partial monster, Gorman leaving his brothers' behind to become successful), friends who are willing to sacrifice themselves for their loved ones (Darmani doing the best he can for his own people, even at the cost of his own life); if you ever replay this game or play it for the first time, keep this theme in mind, and observe the world around you. Even less interactable characters have the very same lesson to teach you, in a way:

Heck, this entire game is about friends always being there for you no matter what, most of its premise is that the Skull Kid thought his friends had abandoned him and were mad at him when it wasn't the case.

Hero!Zelda AU Facts Sheik Edition

Sheik is Impa's eldest grandson and Paya's younger brother. Thus not eligible to be his grandmother's successor. He doesn't hold this against his sister, however.

Assigned Female at Birth but was given his father's name because his mother claimed it "just felt right" so he doesn't have a deadname and takes a lot of pride in being his father's son.

Started medical training a year after and revealed himself to be an incredibly talented mage much like his father.

He continued to work through the Plauge Times where he helped care for his parents and several other patients. Many patients survived, unfortunately his parents weren't one of them. His mother from an acute seizure and his father from heart complications a year later.

Something of a prodigy, he went on to tutor a young Princess Zelda in subjects she fell behind on while she healed from The Plague.

He proved not only an excellent teacher but a better friend to the isolated princess and The King was impressed by her improvement, that he started to invite him to diplomatic meetings alongside her. Eventually, he recommended him to the Officer's Academy.

There he met Link, the bastard son of the king. They did NOT get along at first. But after the violent death of their teacher, Captain Daruk, the two - along with Revali and Sidon - found common ground and reclaimed the Master Sword from the Holodrum Territory.

Their troubles unfortunately did not end there. Tasked with ending a series of strange and destructive weather phenomena by the Three Oracles; Link, Sheik, Revali and Sidon journeyed to Labrynna - the source of the magic.

While they succeeded in defeating the sorceresses Veran and Vaati, Queen Ambi of Labrynna took this to be a declaration of war, despite evidence that the mages planned to assassinate her.

They managed to escape capture but not without great personal cost. Especially on Sheik's part as he sustained terrible burns on one side of his body, scarring him permanantly and blinding him in one eye.

Even though Sheik retains much of his combat skill but he is officially discharged from Hyrule's military due to his injuries. Ten years later, he is foremost considered to be a politician and advisor to the young princess.

However, the war with Labrynna escalates. Skirmishes with neighboring Holodrum have spiraled out of control as a result. And rumor has it they seek an alliance with Dotor of Termina.

Over that ten years, however, Link and Sheik's relationship evolves from confidants to lovers. While Sheikah are not typically banned from romantic relationships, formally courting the new Captain of the Guard poses some...complications.

In their eyes, they aren't keeping their relationship hidden just...private. Being nearly in their 30s, it's no one's business. Not even the king's.

But with an imminent match to Termina's borders, Sheik worries about the toll the war has taken on Hyrule but especially Link who puts on a stoic face as his mental state deteriorates with each battle.

These concerns put a rift between him and General Ganondorf Dragmire who claims that he's brought shame to the legacy of infamous Sheikah impartiality.

Just when war on yet another front seems inevitable, Ganondorf suggests an advantageous marriage between Zelda and Dotour's son Kafei. And all hell breaks loose.

OH MY GOD GUYS. SO I’M DOING MY 5TH ANNUAL REPLAY OF MAJORA’S MASK RIGHT, WHEN WHAT DO I FIND BUT THIS PICTURE IN ANJU’S GRANDMOTHER’S ROOM?????????

the figure on the left is clad in purple, is holding a keaton mask, and has hair VERY similar to mayor dotour, who is kafei’s father:

the figure on the right is more difficult to make out, but all signs point to it being anju! their clothes have similar colors to anju’s dress, and short red hair to boot! especially given that the picture is in anju’s grandmother’s room, it’s just gotta be her, right?

if i’m right, this means that there is an actual photo of adult kafei in the game!!!!!!

i have no idea if this is common knowledge or not, but majora’s mask has been my favorite game for years and i had no idea about this photo!!! i just needed to share my findings because i’m super ecstatic about this and was wondering if other people knew about it or not :]

In MM, all characters with agency are either children (obviously Link and Skullkid, childish Tatl, Romani, Kafei, Pamela), races for which the concept of human age is alien, and talking animals (monkey and, to a much lesser degree, beavers). Most adults are either oblivious and helpless (mayor Dotour being useless, Cremia not believing in aliens, Pamela's dad requiring rescue, Koume getting herself stranded in the woods, the list goes on) or downright antagonistic (town guards not letting Link out w/o a sword); even HMS, who could've been a mentor and a guide in a different story, is not a big help. All this is essentially showing the world from the perspective of a child (even if Link used to be "adult", in MM he clearly doesn't belong in adult world), like in many YA/children's fiction.

On the contrary, in OoT, key characters are either adults from the get-go or grow up alongside Link, and many hold notable authority. Child Zelda is proactive, sure, but her actions lead to a crucial mistake, and seven years later she herself reflects on that. And there are no talking animals, either.

i always thought it was interesting that even though ocarina of time was the more generic hero's journey fantasy story, it was relatively darker in its use of colors and somber in tone; yet majora's mask, clearly the darker of the two by virtue of its main plot and all the depressing shit going on in the side stories, was way brighter in its use of colors and always gave off more of a playful tone to me than oot ever did. bitches love duality (i'm bitches)

Mayor Dotour and Madame Aroma are married, which means that Dotour and Aroma must be their first names. Therefore, I'd like to say their last name is Santurii, since that's what the Hylian text above the Mayor's Residence translates to according to google translate.

Backstory:

Years after Dotour was elected Mayor, he married a red haired woman who went by the name Madame Aroma and the two had a baby boy named Kafei. As a preteen, Kafei met his childhood sweetheart Anju, whose parents worked at the Stock Pot Cafeteria just down the steps of that side of Clocktown. The two became inseparable and after many years of dating Kafei proposed and the two were engaged. Dotour was fond of Anju as he found her sweet and hardworking so he was supportive when he found out about the engagement, though he did wonder if Kafei was ready for marriage.

During the events of Majora’s Mask and the moon's descent into Termina, the mayor’s son Kafei had gone missing and nobody, including his son’s mother or fiancee, had heard from him. While Dotour is dreadfully concerned for his son’s wellbeing, he couldn't leave his desk. The mayor had to decide whether to evacuate the city or continue on with the carnival. Each day he was in his office, listening to Mutoh and Captain Viscen argue over whether the Carnival should be canceled or kept on schedule. Upon the final day of moonfall, tensions were high as the sight of imminent danger pressed into the atmosphere. Luckily for him, the Hero of Termina interrupted the bickering within the mayor's office while wearing the couple's mask. This reminded the mayor of the families within Clock Town as well as his own wife, clearing his head. He then announces he decides to let the civilians choose to stay or flee on their own. That night the moonfall was stopped by the Hero of Termina, and Dotour awoke to the news of his son being found. Not only that, but he was to be married.

After his son’s marriage, it wasn’t long before Mayor Dotour and Madam Aroma were grandparents to a baby girl named Neoma. Dotour absolutely adored his granddaughter, so much so he even demanded Mutoh and the other carpenters to expand the playground in her honor. He played with her within his office and let her sit in his chair, though he often was a bit over cautious with her, not letting her hold pencils from his desk in the fear she would hurt herself. Kafei would laugh at this, pointing out how dotour was more cautious with his daughter than he was despite being a new dad. Madam Aroma would point out her husband did the same with Kafei when he was a baby, though Dotour would scratch his head and pretend he didn't hear.

THE PLOT THICKENS

So I looked up the lines in Japanese, and while Anju’s mother’s lines are mostly the same, the line Anju says in the kitchen is different:

うち、もとは食堂やっててね先代が亡くなってからサービスでやっていた 「間貸し」を本業にしたの客室２部屋の小さな宿だけどこの時期は、いろいろな地方から人がおとずれて・・・

They did some reconstruction of the structure of this line in the English version but the part that interests me is that Anju didn’t say “my father.” The expression used here 先代が亡くなって means when the “previous generation/predecessor,” i.e., the previous owners, died. It could still mean her father, but it could also be referring to her grandfather (or even someone else). It’s not 100% clear.

I think that second option makes a lot of sense: a small, old inn run by the grandparents for many years, and when the grandfather passes away and the grandmother can't run it alone it gets passed on to Anju. OH! And that works with what her diary says!

Granny's Diary We're going to take refuge at Romani Ranch tomorrow. I guess it really will fall. Leaving my lifelong home and fleeing is unbearable, but nothing can be done... I think I'll take several of Gampy's favorite books.

This scenario would also explain the Knife Chamber falling into disrepair ("See, everything here is falling apart... You can hear the voices next door").

I don't know if there's enough evidence to say that this is the case definitively, but it seems likely to me!

In MM Anju's mother tells her,

How happy could you possibly be... marrying a man who runs off when he's about to be married? It would make your life unhappy ...just like your mother's.

And says to Link, if Anju stays behind when they flee to the ranch,

Anju stayed in her room to wait for Kafei... It's foolish to believe a man like that. I too believed my husband would return out of the blue... Oh, Anju... That child's naive sense of trust may be my fault.

So I always assumed the implication was that Tortus left her? I mean... she had an unhappy life, sorta sounds like as a direct consequence of her marriage, and believed her husband would return out of the blue? Seemed pretty straight forward to me. But! You can talk to Anju in the kitchen and she says,

We used to be a cafeteria, but after my father died, the room rentals that were part of our service became our main focus.

which makes it sound like her father was present and involved in the business until he died.

So...? Did he leave early enough that Anju's mother could get away with lying to her and tell her Tortus had died instead? Or am I drawing the wrong conclusion that Tortus left Anju's mom? I mean she is taking care of her mother-in-law... I don't know, I just feel like I'm missing something. 🤔
