2023 End of Year Fic Wrap Up!

I only calculated what I wrote for Mass Effect alone, because I have written for a couple other fandoms but it was a pain getting all my ME writing together im not doing more lol. I have a lot of free time on my hands and my responsibilities didn't take up much of my mental energy. 2024 however, I'm sure there will be a lesser word count.

Overall, I had a lot of fun writing this year, and I improved a lot! So here's to another year of writing and growing as an author

Smut scenes written: many. I posted eight one shots/short fics that are mainly pwp. I have about a dozen one shots started.

New things I have tried: smut. ive been practicing it seriously for a year now (Jan 3 is when i started working on my comfort levels with it). I have tried different characters POV as well: Jack, Samara, Joker as examples. Samara's is very intimidating to me lol.

Fic I spent the most time on: The Kal Project: the first iteration of book one (Dossier: Tali (and Kal!) and the re-write of it (Pull Me Into Orbit).

Fic spent the least time on: cold love, hot blood which is edi/aria pwp and i just word vomitted onto the page and posted within an hour. I was issued a challenge and I rose to it

Favorite thing I wrote: this is hard to decide. Out of posted, either the missing piece or an end, once and for all.

Favorite thing I've read: HOW TO CHOOSE??? @jtownnn the spice of life ( i re-read this constantly) or unintended secrecy by @skittidyne (i read this in one sitting it was so good)

Writing goals for next year: oof. I'd like to finish book 1 of the Kal Project along with book 1 of sour apple baby. Along with more one shots! I do want to push myself with other character's POVs as well.

I only have a couple works uploaded but I do have many first lines so here we go!

1. Dossier: Tali (and Kal!) - [Mass Effect] Shepard goes to Haestrom but picks up two Quarians instead of one. Kal’Reegar/Shepard getting together fic (on going!)

2 . One step closer - [Horizon: Forbidden West] Some fluff and hurt/comfort along with there was only one bed trope with pre-relationship Aloy/Kotallo

The challenge is set, the agreement made.

3. Better from you - [Horizon: Zero Dawn] Established relationship fluff between Aloy/Avad

Aloy sits next to him on the low couch, tucking her knees up and leaning an arm on Avad's shoulder as she looks at what he’s doing.

4. Distraction - [Horizon: Zero Dawn] pre-relationship Aloy/Avad with Aloy denying her feelings

Aloy tells herself she’s testing the security as she scales the palace’s walls.

5. You set my soul alight - [Horizon: Zero Dawn] moments between Varl and Aloy as they get together (on going)

She looks at Meridian, body tingling and sore but she’s still riding the high.

6. Priority: Save Tali - soon to be posted and it’s Tali pov as she first meets Simon Shepard! (This is my Shepard that gets with Tali)

Tali is ducking into cover as soon as bullets start flying at her (days into your Pilgrimage and you’ve already had people shooting at you; already got yourself shot.)

7. after war meetup - fic follows canon for the most part but y’know with a nice ending, so post-canon Shepard and Kal’Reegar get together (with some ‘bodyguard’ shenanigans)

Her, Garrus, and Wrex head to Rannoch under the guise of ‘furthering diplomatic relations’.

8. The three musketeers - another Shepard/Kal’Reegar fic where they meet before the events of the game, when Kal is still on his pilgrimage working as bounty hunter and Elysium just happened for Jenn and well… there are more bounty hunters and bounties afoot

Getting through customs is a still a torrid affair but it goes well enough.

9. In the club - Nihlus/Shepard, they fake date to get information and go to a club

Nihlus deserves a damn medal for this.

10. Wrex with death - Wrex speaks at Shepard’s grave after the collector attack

"I said I wasn't going to do this anymore,” Wrex states as he stares down at the headstone, at the freshly laid dirt.

11. Miranda/Joker - the two of them end up living together post crucible firing as Miranda tries to save a comatose Shep

Miranda thought it wouldn’t be easy living with Joker in such close proximity but he loves to defy expectations.

“How old are you?”

“Thirty,” Kal shifts to sit cross legged on his end of the table, fully facing her. “Turning thirty-one in a couple of months.”

“I’m older than you!?”

“Technically, but you’re not!”

Shepard raises a finger in the air as she responds with, “uh, I believe I am, actually.”

“Does it count if you were dead for two years?”

Ahh, the joys of thinking about your age when you were dead for a while. It’s actually really fun to write about

Do you write in order?

Definitely not. I jump around a lot. Typically, I write wherever the idea I have takes place. Be it the end, or the middle or somewhere else, I write that and then fill in the rest. This is funny bc for Dossier: Tali (and Kal!) I wrote the first chapter, let it rest for about a year and then came back to the project when I replayed ME bc Legendary edition came out. I then wrote the first three chapters, jumped around in the story, fixed the first couple of chapters and went back to jumping around. Though now I am trying to write chronologically for this story.

Do you start with something in particular?

I normally start with whatever scene has gripped me. Be it dialogue, or a character finally getting a hug, a certain character action, etc. I get an idea and just write it.

How fully formed does your writing come out first try?

Typically, it comes out pretty formed for my taste. Though my first passes are very dialogue and action heavy. I tend to go back in and fill in with prose and internal dialogue.

That is of course, when I’m not scrambling to get an idea down before I lose it or when I don’t have writers block.

How many drafts do you go through?

2-4 ish?? I revise/edit as I actually work in the piece but for read throughs when the piece is done? 2-4. I try my best to actually let pieces rest and work on something else and then come back, but sometimes I just chuck it out bc I’m done looking at it.

Tell me about your process:

I tend to just write and then see where it takes me. I have the mindset of write what I want and what I consider fun and just go. I try my best to outline pieces, specially just what happens and then the characters’ motivations/feelings/thoughts even the ones I’m not writing the POV of. This is after I’ve already done some writing for the piece lol. I also do a lot of thinking about the scenes and playing them out in my head like a movie
