I mainly reblogged this meme post because I agree with the sentiment that it's been a bad year to be a gothic literature fan when it comes to movie adaptations. Because seriously, a YA Phantom of the Opera movie with franchise potential (uh-oh...)? Maybe a 2D animated show version of these properties would be a better idea? And why couldn't they cast a dark-skinned actor as Heathcliff? The 2011 movie managed that.

Look, I'm not against bad (in my opinion) adaptations existing. I'll get over how these particular movies were mishandled instead of joining a hatedom. But I think I'm allowed to complain about them just a tad bit, especially in the case of Netflix's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Really, they made them brothers in this day and age?

Explain A Classic Literature Plot Badly (featuring my three favourite tragic couples!)

1. Man defaces a heartfelt handmade gift from his loving boyfriend to stop the natural process of being human.

2. Man is redeemed for stealing by doing more stealing and has to stop his daughter’s boyfriend from dying while two of said boyfriend’s friends hold hands.

3. Gay couple die saving straight couple’s marriage. (This one is a slight cheat because only one of them actually dies IN this book, but we know the other one dies soon after.)

Bonus: the sequel to number 3. Man gets lost.

I think henry’s fixation on youth and beauty stems from the fact that his younger brothers died likely before being able to experience the life and childhood they should have. along with the fact his older brother is someone he’s (and presumably his father since henry picked up the title of lord) disavowed, he probably also has resentment against those older than him for saddling him with responsibilities that he was never meant to deal with in the first place. Aka to him becoming old means becoming cringe af LMAO

Tell me about Lucy and Wotton!

This was an idea I'd been meaning to write down for a while, and finally started last week. I believe it was @yallemagne who inspired me in the comments of my "Lord Wotton Gets Punched" fic with the premise of Wotton running into Lucy at some point after she and Arthur are married (it's a Lucy Lives AU, of course) and finds her hanging out with Jack and Quincey. Hijinks ensue. Wotton probably gets punched again. Here's an unedited paragraph:

His first reaction was a sneer; there was the impertinent girl who had dared to punch him a few months ago at the ball, all because he had done a little harmless flirting. However, his instinct to snub her was counteracted by the circumstances: though she was now married to the delightfully easy-to-annoy Lord Godalming, neither of the two men playing croquet with her were her husband. She was out and about, unchaperoned, by two strangers, and seeing the way she laughed and carried on and touched them with familiarity, there was a juicy bit of gossip to unleash. Wotton imagined the look on Godalming's face when Wotton told him what was going on— how fervently he would deny that his pure little wife could do anything of the sort, and yet the seed of doubt would be planted.

Completely understandable, it's SUCH a good book. This is one of the really "big mainstream" pieces of literature I can soo get behind the hype. That bitch is famous for a reason.
