The Meaning Behind Nanami’s Cow Dream
Tumblr media
While this scene may appear funny on a first viewing, it is, in fact, deeply tragic and emblematic of the uglier truths of the world that Nanami is ignorant to. The Nanami cow episode... is a tragedy. What do I mean by this?
The nature of the donna donna nightmare that Nanami has is her becoming a cow that is sent off to slaughter by Touga, raised for the purpose of consumption as she becomes a steak that he eats. Nanami is blind to this process, questioning it all the while being sent to her death as Touga says his farewells. The nature of this scene within the context of how Touga and Nanami's relationship will develop in the Akio Arc is troubling, and this dream is extremely revealing at this stage of the narrative. Nanami is childish, capricious, shortsighted, and loyal to Touga to a dangerous extent. Her brother encourages her behavior by either waiting and observing the fallout and how he may take advantage of it, or performing ambiguous, borderline too-intimate actions that are designed for her to overthink.
Regardless of his true intentions and feelings, his method of keeping Nanami close is grooming. This is beneficial for him, as this is not only encouraging her closeness to him but encourages a level of reckless, bullheaded action towards people who threaten him. It is unknown if Touga himself is aware of the root cause of Nanami's violent, defensive reactions to threats towards their relationship. But with her position as blindly loyal and blindly violent, Touga has someone who is willing to do just about anything for his sake. He has raised Nanami for slaughter, in the same way her dream warns her. However... How is Nanami, an aggressive and insecure young girl, meant to be connected to a cow, a herd animal bound to being nothing more than a meal for the masses?
Tumblr media
The answer to that lies in the end goal of such a grooming pattern. Touga wants to be like Akio - wants to be someone who seems to both yearn for and despise princehood, has managed to fly free of the risks it demands, and presents as a powerful, successful man who is next to nobody in the hierarchy of the world. Although Touga becomes desensitized to this goal, at this point he's in the process of chasing Akio's coattails and going about his own plans and manipulations. Just like Akio, however, Touga needs a scapegoat.
Regardless of Dios's true intentions or feelings, Anthy's loyalty towards him resulted in her eternal martyrdom as “the witch who stole the prince from the world”. She became someone willing to sacrifice everything for her brother, aggressive and uncaring of the world that threatened their relationship. Akio takes advantage of this by keeping himself and the dueling game in a perpetual stalemate, where he benefits from controlling Anthy and controlling the illusions that layer Ohtori Academy all for the sake of a game designed to fail. He encourages Anthy's worst parts of herself as the Rose Bride, the ideal submissive woman and wife whose nature demands constant perfection in how she acts. However, Anthy is the focus of more than just admiration. Juri, Nanami, and Saionji are all violent towards her, and while Miki is not openly cruel he does objectify her and fixates on the actions of men like Touga. The nature of the Rose Bride is the expectancies of all women - to be on a paradoxical pedestal where the standards you must meet are constantly changing to every person you meet and you must manage to meet them, every time, without having to be told to do so.
The Rose Bride is a production of grooming, not only for what it stands for on a societal level but also a personal and horrific level. Akio and Anthy's relationship echoes Touga and Nanami's, presented as the natural end to the relationship Nanami seems to covet. If she remains on the path that she's headed down, she is dooming herself to the same fate as Anthy. Like the cow born for death, only appreciated for consumption afterwards, Anthy has become nothing more than a cow ready for slaughter - raised by Akio for the purpose of shielding him from the world, only for him to take advantage of her and the power that controlling her brings him. Nanami's nightmare where she dreams she's turned into a fucking cow is an ominous warning of the future. Thank you for reading.

So, if you asked to write your top 5 fav characters each from JJK & BNHA, what genre will you put them (or you agree that they should be in shounen)....
My asks are getting funnier. 🥰 As always, thanks for asking, lets dig in.
Tumblr media
Look at these knuckleheads.
JJK Top 5
I've seen people make really funny observations about how every character in JJK belongs in a different universe but was shoehorned into a horror battle shonen and it delights me to no end. I'm not sure if Gege Akutami actually penned characters that are typical of other anime genres, in a sense, but do believe we all collectively just want our faves to have better odds of survival. At this point, Gege looks at fan polls like a dead pool. I think a story where characters are so obviously not meant to be there would be hilarious if done intentionally, camp even.
Satoru Gojo - The duality of a man who is "The Strongest" in universe while maintaining a girly pop facade to circumvent feeling othered by his strength? Two of my favorite things about Gojo are that he is 1) traumatized 🤪✨ and 2) down astronomically for the days he spent with Suguru Geto. Put this man in a shonen ai, stat.
Nobara Kugisaki and Maki Zenin - Yuri. I feel like I don't need to explain myself here except to say that I put them as one item on the list because I didn't want a list of 6 (I have so many faves). Both iconic, both bad ass. No notes. On the other hand, I would never want to rob Maki of her revenge story so... grain of salt if she stays in universe.
Kento Nanami - I was going to say "this man wants to be in an office sitcom so bad" but, truthfully, would not find the overdone gags and antics palatable. Nanami deserves to rest at an even, dulcet tempo. Traumatized in his youth, he really only returns to jujutsu because office work is unfulfilling but imagine if he were in an office shojo with a found family that he had to provide for? I'm not saying this anime is particularly good but plop him in something cozy like "The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague" but with the home life of "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid". He'll work for the money because it provides for someone else, you know? Let him suffer fools in peace.
Yuji Itadori - Sweet baby angel. Yuji follows the "best of both worlds" phenomenon that we see in other horror anime like Chainsaw Man, Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan wherein he is both human and curse (avoiding further spoilers). But his disposition, his resilience, his pure physical prowess before he ever ate Sukuna's finger? Put this boy in a sports anime and let him thrive. While he'd absolutely body in a fighting sport, what if he was plopped into "Blue Lock"? Sports anime with a dash of horror aesthetic. He'd crush while being as upbeat and hilariously chaotic as Bachira.
Suguru Geto - Baby Girl is one of the most compelling villains we have. I'd say across multiple anime, honestly. He's what happens when a good person, someone who aims to be so morally upright, is faced with the reality that being good actually guarantees you nothing. With someone so unwavering, someone who can't live in shades of grey like Gojo, he can't bend. So he breaks. Honestly, it adds a layer of complexity to the overall story where... can we really, as the viewer, fault him? I feel like he wouldn't have this evolution anywhere else and that there's something to be said as to whether Geto was always doomed by the narrative.
Tumblr media
There's never not been a good time to celebrate this frame, honestly.
BNHA Top 5
What's cool about BNHA is, it is authentically a shonen manga/anime while subverting a lot of it's tropes. BUT, we see this really interesting progression in the art that drifts into horror. Not aiming to spoil anything that's to come in season 7 (body horror, it's body horror. Bones better come through) but you see the beginning of it with the change in vigilante Deku's appearance. If Horikoshi felt inclined to do a horror anime post-BNHA, I'd definitely read.
Katsuki Bakugo - Hilariously, Bakugo wants to shonen so bad but is actually so damsel in distress/love interest coded that it almost undermines his role as Midoriya's rival. Almost. Shonen, shonen ai, I don't think he's out of place in either.
Shoto Todoroki - Todoroki's entire personality and character arc being so intrinsically linked to his family is honestly so amusing given the universe. Like, people have real life superhero powers but awful parents are very much still a thing. So it's interesting to expose the complexity of their family dynamics in tandem with the overarching story because, in every way, the Todoroki family are very much members of the Have's of BNHA society but they are still hopelessly miserable. TBH he could be in a slice of life just experiencing and resolving family trauma. "Kotaro Lives Alone" comes to mind.
Shouta Aizawa - I would cast Aizawa in "Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan" but he wouldn't have the decency to show up to work without a sleeping bag. I'm not saying it wouldn't look out of place in universe but do better for the kids. Joking. He's honestly both the perfect teacher but also a big ole hypocrite. He condemns Midoriya for his recklessness and self-sacrificing (re: breaking bones to use his quirk) but didn't think twice about hacking off his own leg, logical though it may have been. I know All Might is cast as the quintessential mentor in the shonen dynamic but Aizawa is the real MVP when it comes to mentoring and guiding the Class 1A competently. Shonen all the way.
Izuku Midoriya - I can't say Magical Girl Anime, I can't say Magical Girl anime. I appreciate Midoriya's similarity to eponymous crybaby hero Sailor Moon, tbh. She too was OP and with the fate of the world on her shoulders, just saying. He falls in line with the shonen trope of eating something and powering up (re: JJK, One Piece, Attack on Titan) but has emotional range that is not typically seen in shonen which, honestly I love. He is masculine while still being aggressively expressive (even if he struggles to articulate his feelings). His character and subsequent development is another way that Horikoshi subverts shonen tropes and I can't wait to see how his story wraps up.
Dabi - This crispy piece of bacon is a walking, talking and dancing personification of resolute rage. He is quite literally a vendetta held together by staples. Later chapters especially, he just gets unrelentingly grosser and more unhinged and it's both disgusting and emotional. To be honest, between him and Shigaraki, they are undeniably horror fodder by design. In fact, the reveal that he was a little misogynistic extremist radical was particularly wild of Horikoshi. Like, basically if he hadn't self destructed on that mountain he'd have been some incel plotting violence on the deep dark web? I'm trying to think of what to plop him into (maybe not his charred body but just his general... maliciousness, conviction and extremism). I feel like something horror, psychological with a sprinkle of thriller? What comes to mind is a dark series on my TBR but the name escapes me about a kid getting revenge one by one against sadistic bullies though its unclear where Dabi falls on that spectrum.

a bit obsessed with the idea of kusakabe dying as a form of sacrifice to specifically protect/save somebody else. it's consistent enough with the theme of the past generation achieving no meaningful feats against significant threats but it's also ironic enough that someone without a technique and who claims their philosophy is primarily self-sacrificial - although he tends to stay from his own ideals in critical moments, proving he's not only brave when necessary but he does have a sense of responsabilty and guilt - ultimately redeems themselves through death resulting in the achievement of something his colleagues have failed to do. not that i'm wishing for him to die, i hope he doesn't. but it would also make a clear-cut distinction between him and a character like mei mei, who narratively serves a very similar purpose (besides her being a foil to nanami). to have someone be awarded by their selfishness just for it to not be worth much within a world and system that runs and sustains itself due to the sorcerer's labour power, whose only means of subsistence is to sell themselves away. a class of people who is doomed no matter what path they choose to take, as long as they do not break free from their duties and as long as the system doesn't collapse. a death that could serve as a symbol of punishment towards solidarity and altruism but a win for revolution.
#okay gege came for me when i said i didn't like kusakabe and now i'm thinking so much about him and his purpose in the story#why would he go against his own ideal and what is his purpose besides introducing questions like 'is self sacrifice noble?' you know?#so that got me thinking about him dying or suffering a big loss and how that would consolidate his character in my eyes#unless his purpose is completely different and i'm just deeply misreading the situation#if his purpose is to simply highlight personal choices and free will vs his generation's dogma#then i suppose him dying could serve no purpose but i'm not finding that side of the coin very straightforward or totally compelling#but again i feel like i'm failing to read him so maybe it is skill issue#anyway obsessed with kusakabe today awkkajwkaj feeling personally attacked by this twisted chain of events#gege really came for my ass after i was vocal about my kusakabe hate (which i feel like is dead at this point rip 🕊️)#which by the way is so mean. god forbid a bisexual do anything 😔 why can't i be a hater man?#also don't take this post seriously it's more about my mediocre reading of his character and my headcanons/wishes than a theory#i'm not trying to imply he will die or that there is narrative purpose in that#just that it makes sense in my brain if that's the case and the plan gege has for his character#but also he's literally the info dumpster gege probably wouldn't kill him because who will explain things to us 😂#he's like our amateur narrator i bet that gives him total plot armour#ps. maybe this is just my zero braincells moment#i just hate that i don't get it like i want to understand why he exists#but i'm aware that maybe this is a me thing and maybe everyone else just get it#and that makes me feel like that meme#let me iiiinnnn#okay bye

We're seeing different things in Gojo and I won't try and change your mind anymore, but I don't think you can use other stories frameworks as an example for how the isolation of strength affects a character in another. Gege has set up with how the narrator says things like "nobody understood Toji except possibly Satoru" and "ultimate strength and the loneliness it brings", so I'd argue in jjk's narrative godly strength really DOES mean alienation from people.
Okay. I think it's a perfectly fine interpretation that in this world's set up Gojou was doomed to be isolated. I just wouldn't lock it totally in before we either get insight into Sukuna or he dies.
Because for now he's the only one the narrative places in the same bracket as Gojou. But to me Sukuna feels isolated more by choice. His relationship with Uraume shows that he's capable of connection and kindness, he just decided one person is enough. And he doesn't think that because he can't connect to Uraume on the strength level, he can't connect to them at all. He can be also surprisingly patient with others when he chooses to.
Sukuna's battle with Yorozu is also kinda strange and hard to put in context yet. Sukuna's behaviour towards her is kinda uneven. He oscillates between indulging her (a bit) and being a condescending asshole to her (most of the time). But in the end he seems to accept her gift which is the typical sort of kindness he offers those of his kills he enjoyed.
In Heian times Yorozu assumes that he's lonely. But during the fight she realises that might not be the case. It's very hard to guess what's the truth exactly until her gift comes back into play and/or we get some insight into him.
Anyway, we'll see how this resolves.
But I also think that Gojou didn't need to further alienate the people he liked and wished to connect to. He didn't need to bully Ijichi and Utahime. He didn't need to aggravate Nanami. His relationship with Megumi didn't need to result in Megumi seemingly having childhood trauma regarding Gojou.
Sukuna somehow manages to foster the one relationship he has.

goddamn across the ruined sea was certainly a chapter
spoilers incoming-
Tumblr media
first off THIS SCENE ???? was in a state of 😟 when i found out these creatures used to be the previous purifying force (led by chiko) that was sent down here
Tumblr media
this line i imagined it like the one scene with vash and meryl in trimax
Tumblr media
i couldn't get a screenshot in time but when skk establishes a deep m.i.n.d. connection it seems to be done through cupping the construct's cheek (i feel like i'm a bit late into this discovery I'M SORRY I'M A BIT SLOW 😭😭), which honestly sparked a LOT of thoughts for future rants about constructs 💀💀
Tumblr media
i always love when other squads (mostly cerby or sh) chime in they're both insanely silly 💀💀
Tumblr media
ik this is supposed to be like a dire situation but i find it so funny how camu's just standing there on shore like "the sea ain't my department are ya'll gonna deal w that–"
Tumblr media
i can't w this squad they're so funny 💀💀💀
Tumblr media
i hc this to be a nabe x noan vs simon x noan moment
anyw enough of the silly squad moments back to the horrors–
Tumblr media
CHIKOOO 😭😭😭 god if the story explaining her situation in the past wasn't enough they really go all out w showing her state now, just in an endless amount of pain and suffering and wanting it to end
i do find it curious how it would've all played out if chiko got out of the aquarium mission alive and not corrupted so she could inherit the stigmata frame, since from the beginning it was stated that bianca was the alternative choice. while it wasn't explicitly stated who the first choice was, i'm safely assuming that it must've been chiko since she (in kurono's eyes) seemed like the perfect candidate to hold the frame. but with one of the futures nanami saw it almost seemed doomed by the narrative that bianca gets the stigmata frame in the end, so ig we'll never know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Air-B
One time I made a series of artworks telling the plot of one of my detective story, Air-B. The story focuses on five girls, Sayuri, Nanami, Mariya, Ayako and Misaki.
Everything was going fine until a death occurred one day after lunch break. This forced Sayuri and Nanami to investigate the school and track down the killer.
Characters
These were the original sprites I created in 2015 as they originally supposed to be anime characters. But recently I switched their art styles to my default one since drawing anime is a bit tough.
Sayuri
She is the protagonist of the story and initially, she is portrayed as the typical girl-next-door character.
Tumblr media
Nanami
She is the class president and she's normally depicted as strict and organized. It was rumored she got her scar because of one accident although she never confirmed it (and she doesn't want to talk about it)
Tumblr media
Ayaka
She is one of the classmates of Sayuri and she's very active in sports, even dubbed as the most athletic girl in class. She is also shown to be eccentric when it comes to fashion.
Tumblr media
Mariya
The most popular girl in class. She is the queen bee and she is considered attractive among her peers. Despite her popularity, she does not look down upon her fans.
Tumblr media
Misaki
An introverted freshman from Sayuri's class. Despite being an introvert, she is seen communicating with some of the students in class and she is known for her sweet and bubbly personality.
Tumblr media
The Story
Now, the story was summarized in a thread back in Twitter after the series was completed. While the artwork was done in a non-chronological order, I putting it chronologically based on the events of the story.
// CW FOR MENTIONS OF DEATH AND POSSIBLY DISTURBING ELEMENTS
----------------------------------------------
It all started one day during lunch break when Ayaka received a note from this person stating to meet up at the hallway at 2:15 PM.
The note read:
"Hey, Meet me at the hallway at 2:15 pm after lunch. :3"
The dark clouds of the artwork symbolizes impending doom.
Tumblr media
At 2:05, shortly after eating her lunch, Ayaka arrived at the hallways. Initially she didn't see anyone but all of the sudden, she was attacked and that's where the death occured.
It wasn't until 30 minutes later when a student saw the scene and the crowd flocked into the spot to see what happened.
This is the first time it happened in school and as Sayuri stared at the horrifying crime scene, she was determined to track down the culprit.
Tumblr media
She consulted Nanami to investigate the crime scene and she noted that the killer wore gloves when they executed it, leaving no trace on Ayaka nor the ropes used at the scene.
Their first suspect was Mariya, the two had a conflict much recently and often it was assumed she is jealous with Ayaka's volleyball skills.
But on the third day, while Mariya was having a bathroom break, she too met the culprit and got killed.
Tumblr media
Strawberry jam was found in the crime scene, indicating that the culprit was a student who previously bought a jam sandwich at the cafeteria earlier that day. Among the students who bought it were Misaki and Y/N (which is also a character in the story and was invited to investigate the crimes along with the girls).
Other than that, the culprit once again got free, leaving no finger prints on Mariya.
For days, Nanami stressed herself hunting down the answers, trying to piece the clues together. After several days, Nanami began to accuse Y/N, which led into a heated argument. Y/N defended themself on not doing it, because they were with them when the crimes occurred.
Tumblr media
Eventually, Y/N was proven to be correct when Sayuri and Nanami found them dead. Starting this point the narrative was changed to Y/N's perspective to Sayuri's perspective.
The two continued to search for the culprit until one day, they decided to reveal themself...
Tumblr media
It turns out to be Misaki all along. She explained that she did it out of jealousy because Ayaka and Mariya were both talented and popular. And she is so obsessed with them that she wants them dead.
When asked about Y/N, she told them that she "just felt like it" and ending Y/N would cause more chaos among the hallways.
Eventually, after several arguments and a fight, Misaki was defeated and she was eventually arrested for her crimes.

Rating: NOT CUTE
The Nanami pictured is exhibited shows strong parallels to the Rose Bride and is being put in a position of narrative doom.
Why does nobody ever talk about how cute Nanami's hair is when it's completely down
