The worst part of having international friends is when you know they don't know why things are the way they are in their culture and you can't figure out how to ask about them without sounding rude but also in a way they give you the answer you seek.

It can be about simple grammar rules (because they are no linguists, so they are only partially aware of how their grammar works). It can be about cultural everyday things.

I am now in this situation with a Cameroonese friend who doesn't seem to have matching last names with his parents, except they do match partially. I will make it up for the sake of anonymity but his lastname is Dontel, his father's lastname is Natel and his mother's lastname is Zeutel. And I cannot figure out how to ask what is this. I also don't know what his native language/ethnicity is so I cannot look it up online.

Is this a patronym of sorts? Is this something like "Tel family: father Tel, mother Tel and son Tel"? Are his siblings also Dontel or are their lastnames different too? I am so interested in hearing all about this and I don't even know how to begin.

Also, this is the kind of thing that could be extremely problematic in Europe. If this family came to live here, they would need extra documents just to prove that they are indeed parents and children of the same family.

It took 19.5 hours to make the recent wallhanging (currently in the dryer). At my $25/hour rate + cost of materials, it's nearly $600. Um, sooooo I'm gonna put it at $450 USD. Yeah, I'm underselling myself, but I want my work to be affordable to more people.

It would definitely help if minimum wage was adjusted for inflation and cost-of-living. More people could afford more artwork and handmade items.

Nearly all my prices are all lower than they ought to be, by as much as 50% in some cases, but that's because I want to make things as close to affordable as possible.

Please dontell me to lower my prices further. I have a strict policy that I raise the price by 10% for the person telling me to lower them. I did this when I was vendoring (I made jewelry at the time), and it made those folks leave me alone. It has worked for dealing with people like that online.

Traditionally pieced quilts larger than 50x50 inches, true value. Foundation paper pieced quilts larger than 30x30 inches, true value. Smaller than that? Priced lower than true value.

Also, what are your OCs favorite things to do to celebrate Christmas?

Jewelea is very into the singing part of it, so she definitely drags everyone into caroling. She is the only person in the entire world who can get Jade to sing. This inevitably ends in violence when someone compliments Jade's singing voice and Frank has to hold her back from attacking them (yeah she's weird but we love her)

Scarlet loves Christmas cookies. More the eating than the baking, unfortunately for her, so she has to convince someone else to do it. She bribes them (and by them I mean Nicholas) by promising to make hot chocolate, which is one of VERY few things she has enough patience to make. Oh, and she also enjoys trying to trap her OTPs under mistletoe (Samuel helps her with this)

Nicholas enjoys holiday baking with Jewelea, and he likes caroling, too! Jade WOULD enjoy Mistlefoe if Frank wasn't such a killjoy and insisted that it's not allowed. Instead, she likes Christmas lights, and watching Christmas movies. You'd think that Home Alone or Die Hard were her favorites, but she actually loves A Charlie Brown Christmas

Home Alone is her second favorite

Samuel will wear Christmas sweaters or he will perish. He has enough sweaters in his closet to last the entire season without wearing the same one twice, plus some extras for his friends in case they need them. Half are very tasteful, and half are HIDEOUS

Frank would claim that his favorite part of the Christmas season is the end, but he would be lying. He has two favorite parts-- one, watching Christmas movies with Jade, and two, going to the Christmas Eve service. He just loves the candle light, the songs, the quiet solemnity as everyone remembers the reason behind the season
