So me and my friend were watching the dub for Ayakashi
And I'm usually the first person who would say "give the dubs a chance, I know they have a bad reputation but there are some pretty decent ones out there too"
Ayakashi Bakeneko is not one of them.
#mononoke#ayakashi bakeneko#mononoke kusuriuri#victor lee's work in mononoke? pretty good like i enjoy the energy he brings to the role#andrew francis brought bored fuckboi energy to the role somehow and that ain't it chief#that ain't it at all#also the shit they chose to translate literally versus leaving untranslated is SO ANNOYING#like there is no world where the taima sword is a katana there's just not#id say wakizashi if it's anything at all#or just stick with sword??#and you have to choose between 'shape truth reason' or 'katachi makoto kotowari' you cant have both#(and really just stick with shape truth reason something about katachi makoto kotowari surrounded by english is just unbearably cringe)#(but if youre gonna go that route at least be consistent like shit)#and translating 'mononoke' as 'demonic spirit' is the kind of oversimplification that kinda undermines the themes associated with mononoke?#like it's an affliction of the soul that needs to be cured thats the whole damn point#this is not a good vs evil struggle and framing it like it is detracts from the message#anyway thats my rant for the day lol#dont watch the ayakashi dub#juuuuuuuuust stick to the sub

Mononoke is an original anthology anime with five (soon to be six with the movie!!!) parts. The original story came from a different anthology anime, Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, in which the third and final story (eps 9-11) featured the Medicine Seller, a strange merchant, solving the vase of and destroying a mononoke (spirit) called a bakeneko. This story gained so much love that in 2006 an original series was made featuring him.
In the anime, he appears in various places to deal with/exorcise the mononoke. Often the story is told with surrealism, limited POVs, and in a play-like manner. The Medicine Seller also displays himself as very mysterious, often not explaining what he is doing or his end goal to even the viewer.
The Medicine Seller's role is very interesting because even though he is such a strong character, the others intristically view him as "lesser" given that merchants like him were the lowest class (The stories takes place between the Edo and Meji period).
I dont want to spoul any of the plots so ill just leave it there ^.^
Even without the stories being good, the art is STUNNING. It's usage of color and shape is unlike any other animation ive seen, and imo is reminiscent of traditional japanese art through the edo and meiji eras.
It has a dub, but ive never seen it bcs the sub is really good so thats what I watched. Idk how good the dub is lol.
ik i can search it up but i wanna ask what mononoke is abt from u. medicine seller. he sells medicine. meow?
Well u would think he does. U would really think so
#this is also sorta a multiverse thing. not every medicine seller is yhe same medicine seller but theyre all. the medicime seller#like the movie medicine seller is a different one#Watch order is 9-11 of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Stories -> Mononoke 12 episode anime -> movie (not out yet)#I rlly liked all of Ayakashi so u can watch the whole thing#but none of it is connected so u dont gotta watxh anything but the end
