I have a ton of posts saved to read later that I dont reblog yet BECAUSE: I've seen people mistag, I've seen people not disclose things on purpose, and there was that whole scandal last year about the underage thing that wasn't appropriately tagged and a ton of people who liked or reblogged to read later also got under fire

I reblog once I read, I cant say everyone else does. But you do have to realize one thing, AO3 you can't necessarily reblog. You can bookmark and pin and like and comment, and if by chance there is a way to reblog then im dumb and completely missed it. I was one of the people who had an AO3 first and then came to Tumblr and didn't know at first to reblog.

There are some people who want interaction who have less then 50 notes just begging for love, and people keep complaining that their first that have THOUSANDS aren't being shared. I get that it sucks! But also, you are having interaction. I still know people who like fics to read later and won't reblog until after they read it.

Also, I have mutuals who will like their friends fics but not reblog if it has one of the things they don't like. For example, my friend doesn't like daddy kink and another mutual always writes it, so they'll like the fic but not share and that has been discussed

It is discouraging to me to see people say they want to put things behind a pay wall, there are sites for that that you can legitimately do that. But fanfiction is art and it should be shared, and I understand it hurts when people don't reblog, but there are many different reasons people don't as some are listed here.

It makes it discouraging to even interact with people and not even read things at all anymore. I started out not knowing, and then got blocked by a blog because I at the time had only liked things because I didn't know reblogging was what people wanted on here. Is it not all interaction? Is it not all love and gratitude being shown? Since when did we weigh the merit of one thing over another?

We joke that Tumblr doesn't have an algorithm but it does! I see stuff recommended my mutuals like but haven't reblogged. And I see stuff that gets a ton of interaction.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I would love an explanation as to why people want things reblogged (again coming from other sites where you couldn't, not just AO3). I genuinely don't understand and this isn't any hate towards you I have reblogged your fics before and love how you write, I just don't get it?

I understand it might sound whiny to some, and I understand AO3, but it can also help when someone bookmarks it and it ends in their profile, for mutuals to see it as well.

Wattpad may not have a reblog button, but saving the story and commenting in it, helps the story go up in the tag, appear before than other works thanks to the engagement, and also, when you save a story in a public reading list, mutuals can also see it.

Tumblr does have the possibility to reblog your work, and the engagement on here with OTHER people is also easier. Not only by comments, but by asks like this, or responding through the comments or the reblogs themselves. It's more personal and real.

It is also a site where it can ENCOURAGE the writers to keep doing it. This is a site where we can actively support someone, unlike other sites.

We write cause we want to, that is true, but even myself when i wasn't on here, and only used wattpad and AO3, it also discouraged me to not have votes or kudos, or subscriptions on the works.

This hurts more because i can see the activity of people. We can see it. And it is discouraging in a way of also wondering if our writing is bad, or if it was too much, or too little.

And like you said, tumblr has an algorithm, but that algorithm can break if people reblog. It just helps the work we put into, to be shared around because we love it, we wrote it, and we spent time with it and it's like an artist with a finished painting, putting their artwork in a gallery, and everyone just passes by.

That's how it basically feels. We always try to look past it, to say 'oh, it doesn't matter' but sadly, it does.

So i try to avoid spending too much time on characters/ships i dont like but! since i have new followers might be worthwhile to make a little info post to warn people that

I really really dislike Susan Hargrove. She is probably the character I hate the most in the whole show. Nothing anyone says about her, or anything the show does with her going forward is going to change that.

I really dislike a lot of fanon around Nancy. In the canon (at least in s1 & 2) i think she's an interesting but deeply flawed character and i dont like canon or fanon's tendency to overlook those flaws or treat them as strengths.

I dislike Jason, which i know is pretty common and generally consider acceptable but fair warning I also love him. Like... i love when he's the bad guy in fics and I love seeing him be an ass and I love him as a character concept. I hate him but he's also legitimately one of my favorite characters bc i just think he's so fun.

I do my best to tag any posts that are negative about a character or a ship with "not a [character/ship] friendly post". If its clearly ship/character hate i try to tag "ship hate" or "character hate"

now im not quite sure if you want only writing tips or writing blog tips, so ive included tips and tricks for both!

WRITING BLOG TIPS :

have a masterlist. this might seem stupid and obvious, but ive seen people with no masterlist. people are lazy, so if they cant access your writing easily, they will just click away.

have a clean theme. aesthetics are important. they are. people love clean and easy to navigate themes. again, people are lazy, so if you make it easy to click through your blog and get to your writing, youll increase the chance of people reading your stuff!

how to get your work show up in general. putting links in your fanfic might lead to your story not showing up in the search. ive also heard that a banner thats too big can cause that. even using too many tags can lead to your work not showing up. its complicated.

the first five tags. im sure youve heard abt this already but the first five tags are the tags that will actually show up! so if someone follows #bts fluff and you tag your fic with that, your fic can show up on people's dashes as a recommended post!

tag accordingly. speaking of tags, please tag accordingly! theres nothing more annoying than finding a jimin fanfic in the taehyung fanfic tag. i really discourage you from mistagging your stories. if im scrolling through the taehyung fanfic tag and find a jimin fanfic, it makes me want to not read it. just tag your fics accordingly.

reblog your fics. i mean it. seriously, reblog them as much as you want! people live in different time zones or sometimes forget abt wanting to read your stuff, so reblogging it consistently for a week or so to get it on people's dashes helps!

teasers and taglists. i recommend doing both! teasers help to get people excited for your story and taglists ensure that people will read it, or at least remember to!

dont stress abt notes. now, this is less of a tip but rather something i just really really really want to tell you! i know youve heard this before, but please do not stress about notes. tumblr fame does not exists! it doesnt matter if your writing gets 2 notes or 300 or 5k notes! i do understand how getting a lot of notes can be motivating (every fics deserve all the love in the world by the way!!) but in the end, it should not be your motiviation to write. focusing on notes will ruin writing for you. it will. the amount of notes your fic will reach has nothing to do with how good your writing is. dont let something as superficial as notes ruin the fun of writing for you. its seriously not worth it! write for you and no one else!

WRITING TIPS :

write self indulgent fics. i seriously think all fics should be self indulgent. writing fics should be fun, so please write whatever you want! also, theres no such thing as an overdone trope. if you want to write a fake dating enemies to lovers fic, please write it! you might think there are already a bunch out there and its not worth writing another one, but youre wrong! there isnt one out there thats been written by you yet. go write it!

make playlists. now this is a bit specific to me because im absolutely obsessed with music, but making playlists that fit the mood of the fic has always helped me while writing and gotten me out of writers block before!

take your time. writing is freaking hard and when writers block hits, theres rarely ever something that you can do. try not to stress too much abt it! it happens to the best of us!

balance dialogue and detail. its important to find a middle. if im reading a fic and theres paragraph after paragraph after paragraph of detail, the chance of me just skipping that part is really high. because even though i love detail, it does get boring. so use dialogue to spice it up!

reading. okay, this sounds weird because youre asking for writing tips, but reading seriously help your writing so much! if you wanna improve your writing skills, reading a lot is going to be key. now, im not saying reading is necessary, but i do think that it can help you to better! whats even more important though is that you try to analyse people’s writing while reading. when i say you should analyse people’s writing, i do not mean you should write an entire analysis of a book, but to take a second and think to yourself how the authors just did that. how did they convey oc’s sadness? why did they just describe the weather? whats the purpose of this scene?

switch up sentence/paragraph length. shorter sentences/paragraphs = emphasise something and pick up the pace. longer sentences/paragraphs = slow down the story and allow for more detail. its important that you do a mix of both. utilise the length to your advantage. a well placed short sentence/paragraph can pack a lot of punch and turn your sad story in a heartbreaking one.

outline your fics. look this is very personal again because some people dont like to outline their fics, but i recommend outlining your fics. and when i say outline your fics, you can do it as little or as much as you want! it can be a few notes, or a long list of every detail you want to include. i just want you to know where this story is headed. its so easy to write yourself in a corner and trust me, you dont wanna end up there.

allow yourself to be free. this connects to the previous point i just made. even though i do recommend outlining your fics, i am also a firm believer of taking the story somewhere else if you feel like it. ive scrapped complete outlines before. half of the scenes i write also arent in my outline at all. you dont have to stick to the outline. if you think that a specific scene would add something to your story, then please go ahead and write that scene. just always remember where youre headed and dont loose focus.

have fun. i just really wanna reiterate this point again. its just so important to me that you have fun while writing! seriously. its just fanfiction. it should be fun. go crazy. i support you!

About that last post you rebloged about like, pronouns n inclusivity in fics: I find it really differes. I cant say a whole lot about things like eyecolour/skincolour/haircolour n type etc but I have experience with the pronouns stuff.

I have just about every x f!reader tag that you can think of blocked. From general, to specific fandoms to specific characters.

I will go into a character x reader tag and not only be bombarded with f!reader that isnt tagged via hashtags but also shows NO indication that its f!reader.

Even worse, Ive had times where something was tagged gn!reader, and was just straight up using language clearly indicating an afab body. When I said this, they responded with "I tagged it."

I understand that writers cant make re-writes of every piece with every pronoun changed etc. All I ask is clarity about things. Make it clear what it is.

I will go in x reader tags and find more f!reader content then gn!reader, whether its not tagged or wrongfully tagged as gn!reader doesnt really matter, they are both still there.

Reader is gender neutral word.

But thats my view on this whole thing. Im not a writer but I understand that you guys do this for fun and 9/10 dont get a lot out of it. Its just hard to curate your experience when theres no way to actually weed out what you dont want to see.

Okay but that is completely understandable. That's blatant mistagging or just shows the need for better tagging. Shit, I know sometimes I forget to tag things, or that I mistag on accident. But if anyone spots it I have no problem fixing it. I'm sorry about the writer interaction you had, and I hope that more fics get tagged properly as well.

I do agree writers need to fix how they tag. And people who have this issue either don't tag at all, or are beginning writers, who don't know how to do it properly. It's a learning experience, but I empathize with you completely. If I ever mistag or something, I'm always open to fixing them :)

Also I RANTED here:

I remember when insert fics used to be the typical blonde or brunette that's skinny with light eyes and pale skin. Or when things are tagged as x reader and they're blatant OCs. It's gotten better though, and eventually you get an eye for it too.

And I have the tagging issue especially with smut. Nobody tags kinks or puts them in warnings. Nobody puts long ass 100,000+ character posts under a readmore. Like I'm tired of reading a fic and suddenly mister fuckmaster II is making me call him daddy and treating me like a child :/ or when I'm reading a fic and some hard-core BDSM pops up like:

Like please, tag your fics. Mister Fuckmaster II will be able to piss and shit on those who are into the fic if you tag it properly, and significantly lower any hate/negativity that comes your way.

And I understand how the fic community has a lot of afabs and fem in general. From my understanding, girls and females are the biggest market/take up most of the writing space too (in fanfic/fandom). And there's an unconscious bias there too, but mistakes are normal and should be handled respectfully.

My issue was that I see A LOT of people, who aren't writers or content creators, ask for a lot of things when it comes to fics... but they're also the same people who don't interact with posts.

I know I have a lot of ghost readers, or people who just throw a like at max effort, and while I usually don't care, I will admit it doesn't help me with writing or keeping things consistent. What's the point in posting if no one acknowledged the fact I wrote it, ya know? The whole point of social media is to interact. Most of my posts, with the exception of a few, have a 90 to 1 like to reblog ratio. No one comments, either out of like or constructive criticism, and anons now are scarce. But I can understand that because I was gone for a while, but this was happening even before I went on hiatus.

It gets annoying when all I see is "writers need to do this" and "writers should do that" and said advice is just... so dumb. And people demanding shit most of the time aren't even writers, or people who interact with writers.

And it's a simple fix too. Just make a side blog. Put all your shit in there. Your reblogs, your comments, your interactions- if you really want to keep your aesthetic or hide the fact you read fics.

And just because I haven't posted these anons, it doesn't mean I don't get them. I've had people demanding I write more smut, more fluff, less dark content, darker content, extereme kink/abuse... all while being just super rude. Some anons I've got telling me I need therapy or I'm disgusting for writing dark content is the tip of the iceberg.

I guess this is just a rant on how people just demand, demand, demand, and then ask why writers leave/are leaving. Why quality has gone down. Why writers abandon blogs.

I leave anon on because that's how most people interact with me, and because it makes people comfortable, but I assure you if I shut it off, I'd probably get 3 or 4 people in my inbox on average.

I wanna write stuff and see people comment, reblog, or even just leave an anon. I wanna talk with people about my work. I put effort because yall deserve it. Majority of my readers are amazing. And you guys keep the blog alive. Trust me when I say that, because I was planning to abandon/delete after I lowkey left the Obey Me Fandom a year ago. Twst got me back into writing and that community was great. Genshin is great. And all the smaller fandoms I've written for are welcome too. I've accepted being a... honeypot of fandoms lol.

Agree abt the fandom becoming extremely toxic during/after S2. Its always been full of toxic ppl, but its gonna be even worse. Like... I saw a post saying 'Oh I cant wait for the fandom to be alive again' and... no? I really dont? LOL like the show obviously needs the fans, but I'd be happy if the tumblr section wouldnt change a bit. (And I know its not gonna happen and I'll have to block another 50 ppl the day S2 comes out and I'm already tired.)

This fandom is the fandom that made me fully appreciate the benefit of blocking people. Before, I would only block people who were consistently mistagging or starting fights, and now I just do it whenever I feel someone draining my enjoyment of something. I used to feel guilty but you gotta remember it’s not always personal. Literally just curating your own fandom experience. I highly recommend it.

Honestly, I don’t interact much with the obx fandom as a whole aside from my Jiara writer friends and the great people in my inbox. It keeps me sane.

People already treat Jiara shippers like they have the plague so I know for certain that once Jiara gets more scenes and we get more ground to stand on the hate will crank up. I’ve seen it happen time and time again with slow burn fandoms. A little afraid my inbox will become a war zone but I can take it lmao.

i hate seeing stuff on here that triggers me in like unsanitary ways bc when its not tagged its bc its something that the person obviously wouldnt think to tag and i dont fault them for it, but it still makes me super paranoid so how to i get rid of it? ask them to tag it? but that would mistag it for ppl who need unsanitary tagged but dont care abt that certain post, and i’d already seen the post a hundred times so i’d have to ask everybody else. make a textpost asking ppl to tag that certain post so i dont have to see it? i dont wanna have to make a new textpost anytime i find an unexpected trigger i’d feel annoying! blocking the post only works on desktop too........ grr i just wanna erase my mental illness from my head so i dont have to inconvenience myself or anyone else again!!!!!!!!
