This just seems like 2 extreme ends of the same argument. How is the assumption that all books are sexist and written by old white guys any different from the assumption that all fanfiction is smutty and not deep? I also hate the term "real literature" here, just cuz something isn't published doesnt make it not real? Are we also ignoring the elitist take on all this? One of the biggest things that keeps me from reading is money and time. Books cost money, even ebooks. The only way to get them free is free ebooks (which usually don't have what you're looking for) and the library, which lets be honest is a dying breed. It takes time and effort to go to the library, assuming you have a mode of transportation, then you have a limited time to read said book before having to return again to the library. Another option is through illegal pdf downloads, which also takes time to find a good safe website, and some ppl are morally opposed to that. With all these obstacles why wouldn't someone fall back onto the comfort of fanfic which is free, and easy to access whenever they want? Plus they include characters they already know and love, it can be a comfort to people.

I work in education and I honestly do not give a fuck how or what you read, as long as you do it. The difference between high schoolers who read anything and those that don't is like night and day. Besides, reading fanfiction can be a great introduction to reading for people who have trouble with it. You don't have to commit to long chapters if you dont want to.

I can't tell if this post is meant to hate on fanfiction or simply hate on those who have a strong preference to fanfiction over books, but it comes off as both through the unnecessary hostility. Perhaps I've misunderstood, but again too extreme sides is how it looks. This is coming from someone that doesn't read fanfiction, it ain't my thing, I do prefer books but I respect others' preferences.

If you say shit like “ugh actual books are sooo sexist why would I read them when I can read my sexy smutty fanfic” and you’re over the age of 20 I hope you get mauled to death by tigers. I hope you get drip fed hydrofluoric acid. And if you say shit like “fanfic is soooo much more profound than actual books” I hope you get tied to four horses and pulled in opposite directions.
