"Are you accusing me of cheating? Of distracting you on purpose?" Carmen played the shocked card, her mouth falling open in mock horror. "I would never!" Her gaze cut away from the cards to the man sitting beside her. "Besides, it's not my fault if you are easily distracted." She leaned closer, her voice dropping as her gaze to his lips. Perhaps it was a low blow to be trying to distract him so soon after saying she wouldn't, and through such an easy way. "You look like you've lost a fair amount of chips." She grinned, her gaze now moving to his pile that was smaller than hers. "Going easy on me?" She scoffed, the sound being followed by a laugh. "What are we betting this time? And don't say money, that's so predictable."
Donovan let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as he took a sip of his drink. “Alright, I’ll give you that one—poker night wasn’t my finest moment. But in my defense, I was distracted. Pretty sure someone kept talking my ear off just to throw me off my game.” He shot her a pointed look before setting his glass down. Carmen had a superpower of distracting Donovan when he tried to focus. “As for blackjack, I’d say I’m keeping up just fine. And yeah, let’s make it interesting.” He leaned forward slightly, eyes sharpening. “But just so we’re clear, I’m not going easy on you this time.”

Francesca hesitated for a moment before knocking on Donovan’s door, her fingers tightening around the strap of her shoulder bag. Everything had shifted so drastically since the Holiday Gala. She’d made a firm decision to bury her feelings and focus on someone else, but no matter how much distance she tried to put between them, the bond they shared seemed unbreakable. A part of her wondered if it ever truly could be. When the door opened, she offered a small, shy smile. “Hi,” she said softly, stepping inside with cautious movements. Her gaze remained fixed on the floor, afraid that meeting his eyes—those familiar, piercing blue eyes—might unravel her resolve. It had taken her several tries to work up the courage to come here. Her voice was quiet as she asked, “Is Evelyn awake? I know I’m probably here during her nap time.” Francesca couldn’t help but admire Donovan’s approach to parenting. He’d always emphasized structure and routine, saying it was the best gift you could give a child. It was something she’d come to respect deeply, even if it added another layer to the ache in her heart. She knew people judged her for giving Evelyn up; thought she was heartless for letting her go. But Francesca had never regretted her choice—not for a second. It was the hardest decision she’d ever made, but it was for Evelyn’s best chance at life. Seeing how happy and thriving her daughter was now only solidified that.

for: donovan walsh @moody-money where: la mordedura, best table they have to offer
Giada pulled out all the usual stops for her meeting with Donavon Walsh, a meeting that had been set long before both Giada and Donavon had been made aware of it. It was standard protocol, really, a little wining and dining, something her father or any seasoned professional would have done. Best table in the restaurant, hand picked menu, exclusive wine selection, the list when on and on. Just like the words from Giada's previous encounter with Donovan. They seemed to go on and on, still buzzing around in her mind as she took a her seat at La Mordedura. Something tells me you like a good challenge. And Donavon Walsh was about to find out exactly just how much she did.
For Giada wasn't simply looking to collect on an old deal made years ago between old men, or merely pawn her precious baby sister off and be done with it. No — if she was going to foresee an archaic agreement go through then she was going to use it to her upmost advantage, to the Serpent's advantage, and to her sister’s. She wanted the Syndicate to pledge their support to them in this war —for she believed they were the key to all this— and ensure her sister's safety and happiness. Come hell or high water, Giada Rosalia D'Amiano was going to get what she wanted.
"Mr. Walsh," The councilwoman stood when he arrived, extending a hand to him like any business professional would do. "Thank you for joining me this evening. Please have a seat." She gestured towards the empty chair across from her, settling herself into her own, careful not to crease her custom Versace number. "I trust you already know why I asked you here this evening, however why don't we order some drinks first and make ourselves more comfortable."

Words couldn’t capture the seething rage that burned through Devran. This wasn’t some random act—it was a calculated assault, one that required careful planning. His ally had betrayed him, and now, with Reyan injured—the one person who had always kept him grounded—Devran felt no need for restraint. He wasn’t here to play nice. He knew exactly where Donovan spent his time, and that’s why he arrived early at the arcade, slipping in without a hitch before the doors even opened. It's easy enough to find Donovan in the backroom. "Hello," Devran says, his tone dripping with false cheer. He delivers a punch to Donovan's face, sending him tumbling from his chair. Devran yanks him off the floor, jerking Donovan up by his t-shirt collar. A gun at the older man's temple appears before he has a chance to realize. "I don't like being made a fool of Donovan. Just give me a reason." He hisses, pushing the steel harder against his skull.

The Enforcer (Murder, Inc., 1951)
"In seven more hours, Mendoza walks out of that courtroom a free man. How can that be? What's wrong with the law that we can't touch him? Oh, I know, our kind of laws are designed to protect the innocent. It's not enough that we know a man is guilty, we have to prove it."
#the enforcer#murder‚ inc.#1951#film noir#american cinema#bretaigne windust#martin rackin#raoul walsh#humphrey bogart#ted de corsia#zero mostel#everett sloane#roy roberts#michael tolan#king donovan#bob steele#don beddoe#adelaide klein#jack lambert#john kellogg#compellingly told police procedural noir. the real draw here is the effective and fairly original shape of the narrative: we open with#Bogart looking after his key witness‚ his case against a major gangland figure all but sown up. when said witness falls to his death#(undoubtedly inspired by the real world death of Abe Reles‚ a hitman for the irl Murder Inc who fell to his death whilst in police custody#having turned informant) Bogie has to go back over the case to date‚ cueing up a series of flashbacks in reverse order. it's a neat conceit#and allows for characters we've already met (and indeed already seen die) to be reintroduced in a way that shows them in a very different#light. a strong cast too; Bogie is Bogie‚ unchallenged by this part but effortlessly charismatic‚ with some great supports (shout out to#the perennially brilliant Mostel‚ a very fine dramatic actor who's often remembered only for his comedy). the idea that these cops have no#understanding whatsoever of terms like 'a hit' or 'a contract' somewhat stretches the suspension of disbelief but then after all there must#have been a time when those phrases were unfamiliar (this could always be a period piece i suppose; it isn't at all clear but the real#Murder Inc were exposed and disbanded in the early 40s so maybe this is meant to be then (tho some big changes made to the real story)

Francesca was relieved when the cameraman decided to step away, feeling the warmth of a soft blush creeping up her cheeks. Donovan had a way of making her heart flutter. "You’re absolutely right," she agreed, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Speaking of which, are you free later tonight?" she asked, the question hanging between them. Donovan and she were friends—there was nothing strange about inviting him to hang out. That’s just what friends did. "I was thinking of grabbing a drink at the Melody Bar. They’ve got a folk singer performing tonight, one I’ve been kind of obsessed with."
Donovan couldn’t help but grin at Francesca’s laugh. It was a little too easy to lose himself in it, the way she spoke like she didn’t even try to be charming. “Yeah, sounds like a dream,” he agreed, leaning a bit closer. He wasn’t sure why he always felt like he had to impress her, but there it was. “And I’m glad we ran into each other too. I mean, who else could appreciate the need for a night off like we do?” He ran a hand through his hair, trying not to let his nerves show. “I know you’ve got a lot going on… but a break wouldn’t hurt. I’m sure it’d do you some good.” He let out a small laugh, his tone lighter this time. “Great minds, right? Who knew we’d end up on the same wavelength like this.” He kept his eyes on her for a second longer than usual, but quickly turned his focus back to the street.

The Silent Sacrifice // Self Para
mentions: @moody-money
trigger warning: domestic violence, pregnancy and trauma, hospital, emotional manipulation, topic of abortion, violence, blood, trauma response, mental health struggle, feelings of inadequacy of being a mother, just general sadness
Five Years Ago
"The genius bar has nothing on you," Francesca said, offering Donovan a smile as he set her old laptop down in front of her. The thing had been glitching, constantly flashing to a black screen, and she couldn’t figure out why. She was still surprised by her friendship with her sister’s ex. Their last encounter had been unforgettable—his escape from New York after needing money to leave town. Francesca had been twelve, her conscience still sharp, and she’d overheard her father’s evil plans. The gang life had been tough back then, and it was only worse now. It felt like fate had brought them back together, even more so that they’d become friends. She’d always liked Donovan. He had a good heart and had treated her sister well.
A hand grips her shoulder, and Francesca stiffens, though she forces a smile. Xavier Kentwood was her boyfriend. Their relationship had started so sweetly—flowers, extravagant dates, thoughtful gifts. He was a lawyer, polished and ambitious, ticking every box she thought she wanted. But then things began to shift. He was under pressure, trying to make partner at his law firm, and the stress showed. At first, it was just yelling. He’d apologize afterward, and there’d be peace—until it happened again. Then came the breaking and throwing of objects. Again, he’d apologize, promising it wouldn’t happen anymore. But recently, the violence had turned toward her. All it took was asking to adjust the time of their dinner reservation, and he exploded. Her ribs still ached from the consequences.
Xavier glared at the hacker, his disdain evident as he took in the man’s rumpled, unpolished appearance. “Thanks, Jonathan,” he said curtly, dismissing him without a second thought. Donovan shot Francesca a look, his own eyes narrowing slightly. “C’mon, babe. We’re late,” Xavier said sharply. Her eyes widened—she knew how much he hated being late. Donovan’s expression shifted, something flickering in his gaze, almost like recognition. Francesca forced a smile, not wanting to cause a scene. As they left the store, Xavier’s hand clamped down on her arm, his grip tight and unrelenting. A gasp escaped her as she instinctively jerked back, trying to pull away. “Let go!” she demanded, her voice trembling with panic. Xavier’s eyes darkened, shifting from their usual pretty blue to something cold and unforgiving, like ice.
“Do you like him? Are you cheating on me?” Xavier roared, dragging Francesca into a shadowed alley. Before she could respond, he shoved her against the cold brick wall, his voice a relentless storm of accusations and fury. He yelled and screamed, his words cutting like knives. Every instinct in her body urged her to run, to fight, to cry out for help—but instead, she retreated into the silence of her mind. She tried to block out the horror, willing herself to disappear into the safety of her thoughts, far away from the cruel reality unfolding around her. It worked for a second. She didn’t register the first hit. “You’re pathetic,” he spat, his voice venomous. “You’re lucky to have me. Who else would ever want you?” Her tears fell freely now, and she clutched her stomach as if holding herself together, trying not to break completely.
Xavier's yelling abruptly stopped, his voice cut off mid-rant. Francesca opened her eyes, startled, to see a figure standing behind him. “It's Donovan, by the way," the figure said casually, just before landing a brutal punch. Xavier crumpled to the ground, blood streaming from his nose and mouth. Francesca stood frozen, unable to look away as Donovan dropped down and continued the assault, each blow landing with force and fury.
~
The hospital room is heavy with silence as they sit together. The doctors are still running their tests, likely already contacting the police about what happened. They refuse to discharge her, insisting a mental health professional will be arriving soon. Francesca lies curled up on the examination table, her body tense and small. Beside her, Donovan sits with an air of quiet resolve, his presence grounding in the silence. His hand is wrapped around hers, his fingers warm against the cold, as though he could offer some measure of comfort, though nothing could fill the empty space inside her. “You need to call your family. They should know what happened,” he whispers. “I can’t.” Her words are flat, devoid of emotion, yet resolute in their finality. The thought of reaching out to anyone feels unbearable, a weight she isn’t ready to carry. She just wants to forget. She wants it to vanish from her mind. “You need to talk to someone,” Donovan presses, his voice steady but soft. “Keeping this inside will only make it worse.” Francesca remains silent, her eyes focused on nothing in particular, the pull of his words sinking in. She knows he’s right, but the thought of reliving it, of opening herself to someone else’s gaze, feels like a betrayal to the quiet, fragile shell she’s clinging to. She can’t let this break her. She won’t let it undo the strength she’s fought so hard to build. “Why’d you help me?” Francesca asks after a long pause, her gaze shifting to his. He had no reason to. Their relationship was friendly but they barely knew each other besides the occasional run in. For a moment, Donovan says nothing. “Because I know what it’s like,” he replies quietly, his voice soft but laden with an understanding she can’t quite grasp. No more words are spoken. The room returns to its hushed state, but something shifts in the space between them. Francesca doesn’t release his hand. Instead, she tightens her grip, not out of desperation, but as a silent promise. She doesn’t let go.
~
The pink plus sign on the test was all it took to unravel her. Tears blurred her vision as she stared at the small plastic strip, its stark symbol a cruel reminder of the past she had tried so hard to escape. Months had passed since it happened, but it felt like no time at all. Francesca had changed everything—her phone number, her apartment—anything she could think of to keep him from finding her. The security at work had been instructed to call the police immediately if he showed up. She had started therapy, taking slow, careful steps toward healing. And yet, this. Why now? She had been so careful.
There was a soft knock on the door, followed by it creaking open. It was Donovan—the only person who knew, the one she trusted to keep the dark parts of her past safe. Wordlessly, she handed him the test, unable to speak the words that had been choking her since she saw the result. Her body looked no different. She hadn’t gained weight, nor did she feel the usual signs of pregnancy—no morning sickness, no changes she could pinpoint. It felt like a cruel trick. She hadn’t been with anyone since that night, and so it left only one possibility: Xavier.
“What do you want to do?” Donovan asked quietly, his voice full of the care that had always been there, no matter how many walls she built around herself. “It’s not exactly legal, but I know someone who might be able to help.”
The words hit her like a wave, but she didn’t have the luxury of time. She was already past the legal limit for a simple procedure. A doctor’s approval would be needed, and with it came the risk of a paper trail—a record that could lead back to Xavier. He would find out, and that would be the last thing she could allow. Xavier would do anything to regain control over her, even if it meant dragging her through a nightmare of courtrooms, forcing his way back into her life, tying her to him forever. She looked down at her stomach, her mind spinning. No hatred. No anger. Just an overwhelming disappointment in herself. She wasn’t ready for this, not for the tiny life growing inside her. She could barely keep herself together, let alone raise a child. Her own upbringing had been a disaster. She was hardly a model for motherhood.
“No,” she said quietly, her voice shaking. “I don’t want to do that.” It wasn’t fair to the life that was starting to take shape inside her, but the fear of what would happen to that child—foster care, strangers, uncertainty—clung to her like a dark cloud. Her work with the nonprofit had shown her all too clearly how fragile the system was. The thought of her child falling into it was enough to break her.
She looked at Donovan. He was gentle and kind, a man who had lost so much through no fault of his own, yet still found the strength to help others. A man who knew what it was like to lose everything—everything—because of love, and yet he was here, caring for her, asking nothing in return. He was a good man.
A thought struck her, sudden and surprising, but it felt like the only possible solution.
“What if you took it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. The idea felt crazy, but there was something about it that clicked, like a puzzle piece falling into place. Donovan looked at her, confusion flickering in his eyes, and for a moment, she almost doubted herself. But then the idea made sense. Donovan had always expressed a longing for a family, but his body had been damaged in ways that made that impossible. But maybe, just maybe, they could make it work. It was a crazy thought, but in her heart, she knew it was the best option she had. Maybe this was how she could right a wrong, fix a family sin—by giving Donovan the one thing he could never have for himself.

The Syndicate was Switzerland, Devran thought as he entered their headquarters. They claimed neutrality but there with the death of one of their members, perhaps their worldview has changed. He’d scheduled an appointment online to check out their latest laptop, adding a note to give their leader a heads-up. Devran suspected Donovan would appreciate the gesture. Donovan was a curious figure—good-natured yet inscrutable, more politician than hacker. A worker guided him to a high stool tucked away in a more isolated corner of the space. It stood apart from the other stations, but Devran figured it was just a matter of what made the Syndicate’s leader feel comfortable. As the blonde man approached, Devran smiled and greeted him warmly. "Good morning," he said, his voice steady and confident. "Care to share your stance on things? I’m looking for something strong to back me up on upcoming projects. Feels like you’re the best person to talk to."

— BIOGRAPHY
Growing up in Cebu City, Carmen never thought her life would ever take the trajectory it did. She never thought she'd leave the Philippines when she was a little girl, let alone move to a foreign country halfway across the world. Her mother was from the United States and had met her father while there teaching English. However, her parents divorced when she was just two years old and she went with her mother. By the time of her fourth birthday, her mother had married a new man in Cebu City. This was the man Carmen thought of as her father, most of her earliest memories are of him playing with her, riding on his shoulders as they ran around the yard, of him reading bedtime stories to her. But when she was ten, her father got a job in Seattle, Washington in the United States in the growing tech world. Carmen's birth father stayed behind in the Philippines, but it made no difference since the man had not reached out to her or her mother since the day he left. She left behind her home and moved to this new city that had more rainy days than sunny ones. Despite being sad about leaving behind her family and friends, Carmen was a bright and charming girl and quickly made friends in the new world.
Carmen had already been learning English in school and at home over in the Philippines, so she didn't start off knowing nothing compared to the other kids. She took to her new life quickly, making friends and becoming well-adjusted in this new life. They made a new life in America, going on trips to see the big and expansive country she had never seen before. Even taking a family vacation to Hawaii one summer. But then everything changed once more, ripping away any happiness she had come to known. One day when she was sixteen her parents were in a car accident and died. They had been driving to come see her in her first school play. All of her grandparents over in the Philippines were either dead or in no shape to take care of a teenager. And no one was able to find or get in touch with her birth father. With no family members able to take her in, Carmen was put in the foster system.
The once bright girl became dark, angry and upset with the world for taking away her family and for putting her in this horrible system with people who didn't want her as she bounced from house to house. Like her dad, she had loved computers and technology. She'd already been involved in coding before, but it wasn't long before the angsty and lonely teenager soon got into the dark web and hacking. By the time she was seventeen, Carmen was a very talented hacker and she was able to go against some pretty skilled people. One day when she was hacking into a bank's network, she stumbled upon one such person. At first, she though the other person was an idiot. They were going to trip the system and get caught. At the last second she decided to warn them. This person turned out to be Donovan Walsh and he was so impressed with her skills, he offered the teenager a spot in the hacking gang he was a part of called the Echo. Carmen denied his offer, not wanting to tie herself to people knowing she was better off alone. But when she turned eighteen and aged out of the foster system with no money, no home and no acceptances to any colleges, Carmen knew she needed to reach out.
Carmen joined the Echo at eighteen, staying with the gang and finally finding a family once more. She moved with the gang when they relocated to Los Angeles in 2012 and found that the sunny city suited her better. Through the years, Carmen worked her way up through the ranks always having a close bond with Donovan as he himself worked his way up. When he became leader, it was no surprise that he picked her to be his second in command. Seven years ago, she met one Lucky de la Cruz at a party. Despite the differences in their lives and their alliances to their gangs, she quickly fell into a relationship with the man. The two undeniably had a lot of fun in their relationship, often partying and doing as they pleased. But when things turned serious, Carmen asked him to give up the drugs and to try to make things work with her. He agreed, and for a while he cleaned things up and the two got more serious. But Carmen still hated his part in the Family, she hated the life they promoted with the drugs, the power, the corruption and while she knew her part in Echo was not innocent, she saw the stark differences and dangers of the other organization. She kept trying to get Lucky to leave with her. To choose her.
One day five years ago, Carmen had been at a club with him while members from the Family were conducting a business deal. It went wrong and bullets started flying. Carmen was caught in the crossfire and had to go to the hospital with a gunshot wound in her arm. Due to the trauma of seeing her bleeding out, Lucky had turned to drugs once more. When he came to the hospital, she begged him to choose her and to leave the Family for once. But he couldn't say no to the drugs, to the money and the power and the only life he knew. She ended things right then. After getting out of the hospital, Carmen had a one night stand with a stranger to try and mend her broken heart. It hadn't been long after she found out she was pregnant. She gave birth to her son Alejandro Benjie Abalos, who she calls Benjie, not with the father by her side, but with her best friend Donovan by her side. He'd been there every step of the way, even before she was pregnant from the day she joined Echo. He had a daughter about the same age, so the two of them worked together, their kids becoming just best friends as well. They both have been a part of each other's lives so much, and have been a huge part of each other's children's lives as well.
She's not happy with the recent deal Donovan had to make with another Family member, and therefore The Family as a whole. She hates the whole gang, and has made it clear to Donovan that she refuses to do any business with Lucky. But, she also knows the heavy weight he bares as the leader and what this alliance could mean for Echo as a whole. So she'll support him as his second in command and as his friend, even if she doesn't agree with it.
