Abuela lives in an apartment building right across ours. She peeks out of her window daily, stays there for a few minutes and looks at the street down below. We saw a lady once clean her unit but she may just have been a caregiver who came in for the day. It seems like she has no family with her nor any visitor aside from the cleaning lady. So, that's why we adopted her as our very own abuela. Our day is brightened by an abuela sighting. Donostia-San Sebastián became a member of the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities in 2010 which means the city infrastructure and services are geared towards the empowerment and improvement of the lives of the elderly. Visibly scattered around the city are orthopedic clinics, hearing aide specialty stores, among others. You see many elderly wearing masks everyday walking around on wide pedestrian walkways with shallow step ups/downs easily maneuvering their walkers, canes, even wheelchairs, sunning themselves in the parks and even having early drinks with friends.
